A 101 yds against a cupcake team is probably not enough of a confidence booster for this coming week. What will Wynn do?

And after the trouncing from USC, what will the Utes come to Provo with?

I can't wait for all of this to go down. It's going to be fun.

It's a good thing sammy's team has nothing to worry about. Their performance Saturday was absolutely stellar. I've got them beating Texas by 70. Heaps for Heisman.

Wynn may think of himself as a gunslinger, but his play, even before the injury (physical and psychological) never matched that description.

He certainly didn't look right on Thursday, I just can't tell how much of it was physical and how much was "in his head." At best, he played a turnover-free game against a very good FCS team. Even still, throwing for only 100 yards when you put it in the air over twenty times isn't confidence-inspiring, even if you're playing a superior opponent.

Hopefully he can get his confidence back, because without it the Utes will struggle in every remaining game this season.

I just hope that he doesn't force his throws. It sounds like they are beating it in him to "let it rip". He needs to be more productive, but if he forces the ball and turns it over, it could be even worse than a mediocre showing. I want to see him air it out more, but any more than 2 INT's and the Utes are in big trouble.

"He didn't play poorly on Thursday night," said Whittingham. "He just didn't do the things we need him to do."

    ROTFL

Had this been about BYU's quarterback and Bronco was doing the talking, we would have read, "He didn't execute at an acceptable level." Football coaches are marvelous human beings.

You really think that Old Miss is a better team then Montana State? Montana state ended the year ranked 5th, and Old Miss wasn't even ranked. Obvious.

Wynn's mind was in the right place and he diddn't make many mistakes last week. One of USC's strength is their DB's. Almost always that way. The U will have to run successfully against the USC D-Line and backers in order to have a prayer. Utah's defensive line should be able to hold their own against just about anybody but the rest of their defensive is a little suspect. USC does not have one of their best teams this year according to national "experts" and are vulnerable. If Utah can make a major offensive improvement over last week, they have a shot.

To gain some perspective on Wynn's performance I found a QB rating calculator and plugged in Wynn's numbers. Wynn's college QB rating was 131 and his NFL QB rating would have been 104. Those are actually pretty good numbers.

I agree that he has to throw the ball down field more and get his speedy receivers involved in the passing game, but playing turnover free football and executing well in the red zone shouldn't be underestimated.

Utah doesn't need Wynn to throw for 300 yards every game, he just needs to be solid and mistake free.

Last week Jordan had 2 touchdowns. He earned one. Jordan should probably send Blechen a fruit basket for gift wrapping the first one.

Jordan Wynn is going to cry like a little girl... on the bus ride to the Coliseum. If he's not right in the head after a game against Montana St, Ute fans are about to see an epic meltdown.

Jake Heaps looked great on Saturday, didn't he?

  • MN Ute SALT LAKE CITY, UT
    Sept. 7, 2011 10:34 a.m.

Guys, let's stop with the subjective posing and look at the facts. According to ESPN, Wynn's Ranking for the season so far is a respectable 130.8 whereas Heaps has a 116.3. So I'd rather go with the QB that has a better ranking and didn't need a last quarter comeback to win his game.
As for the people saying USC's gonna crush us cause of their better passing game, look at the MN game again. Besides one or two plays, Barkley had to dish it out quickly on screens and bubble passes, and that was against a team who was slow as hell in terms of their D-line. Utah's gonna put much more pressure on him, and our LB's are gonna chew Woods and the other receivers up if they try the same thing this weekend. And though our corners/safeties are our relatively weaker links, our D-line won't give Barkely the time to set up for a long pass,so he'll mostly be throwing in the vicinity of Blechen/Walker, and Thursday's game showed us how that goes.
Just trying to bring a little more concrete of an argument to the table. Cheers.

As a BYU fan, I would take a QB who throws for only 101 yrds, two TDs and no INTs with a WIN any day over a gun slinger who throws two INTs...with a LOSS. Let's not pass judgement against Wynn (or Heaps for that matter). It's only the first game is the season. Now if you see a trend through the next couple of games, then it's time to worry....but don't hang a guy after just one game.
I've always been impressed with the Utes' defense. I think they will be up for the task on Saturday. Good luck! Beat USC, and tell them Kaveinga says hi. :)

  • wwookie Payson, UT
    Sept. 7, 2011 11:12 a.m.

    TamaSamoa is spot on.

Jordan had a big positive coming out of Thursday's game - he didn't make any big mistakes.

One INT can negate 60 or 70 yards of offense gained.

Also, his couple deep passes were right on target, but in good coverage. The difference being a matter of inches between a completion and a deflection.

Jordan should be confident, there was nothing to be upset about. Now he just needs to throw more and stop throwing off the back foot.

    GO UTES!!!

Didn't the Utes rush for almost 200 hundred yards? The Defense looked as fast and physical as advertized. The kicking and special teams situation looks far better than anticipated. There were a lot of positives to build on and yes there are things to work on. With the exception of about 5 elite teams everybody in the country has a ton to work on and half those teams are 0-1 right now.

I've watched Jordan Wynn enough over the years to know that he has the talent to be great at Utah. He's had some ups and downs, but right now his main problems are psychological.

I fully expect Jordan to bounce back this weekend against USC. He may not pass for 300 yards, but as long as he doesn't make big mistakes and completes enough passes to keep the Trojan defense honest, the Utes will win.

    itsajelly,
I read that Wynn is growing his hair to donate to locks of love in honor of his grandma, who recently died of cancer. They use the hair to make wigs for cancer victims.
    So, cut him some slack.
This week we should get a better idea of what all three quarterbacks (Wynn, Heaps, Keaton) are made of.

To gain some perspective on Wynn's performance, I checked the official NCAA stats and found that:

Wynn wasn't even in the Top 100* in passing yards per game

    Heaps = 46th at 225 yds/gm
    Keeton = 53rd at 213 yds/gm
    Wynn =

  • Just the FAX Olympus Cove, Utah
    Sept. 7, 2011 4:50 p.m.

    Wynn = about 102nd at 101 yds/gm

    *100 has 106 yds/gm

Wynn also ranks 100th in yds/cmp and 96th in yds/att

    btw

Completing 1 of 2 passes for 5 yards equates to a 236 rating... a great rating, but, putting things in perspective, it's probably not going to win you very many games.

    Just the FAX,

Wow, way to pull some stats to work in your favor. I bet i know of another stat that Jake probably is pretty close to the top in: Interceptions ran back for touchdowns. You see how i did that? Just took something that a BYU player had a particularly tough time with in his first game and used it to make him look really bad. In the end, nobody cares about your "Fax". Go back to cougarboard or whatever it is.

"You really think that Old Miss is a better team then Montana State? Montana state ended the year ranked 5th, and Old Miss wasn't even ranked. Obvious."

For starters, it's Ole Miss, not Old Miss. And second, you don't seriously think that Montana St is better than Ole Miss, do you? Ole Miss' O line would wear down Montana State's D line by the end of the first quarter.

I find it curious that there is no viable option to Wynn. Even if one didn't want to bench him, players get hurt and seems like the Utes are extra vulnerable at this position.

Pulling together a few stats that work in your favor?

    Here's a reality check:

If Wynn averages 101 yards/game, 4.39 yards/completion, and 6.37 yards/attempt for the remainder of the season, the Utes will be lucky to win 4 games. Wynn's longest pass of the game was only 8 yards, and his two TD passes were weak 7- and 5-yard floaters.

    Wynn's last 6 games:

    104/183, 1152 yds, 56.8%, 6.30 yds/cmp, 7 TDs, 5 ints, 116.87 rating

USC is going to stuff the run and dare Wynn to beat them with the pass. Good luck with that.

I find it curious that Chow compares Wynn to Detmer, and many are posting comparing him to Heaps.

Football is contextual, meaning you cannot compare Wynn to Detmer or Heaps.

JW needs to go out and be the best Jordan Wynn that he can be for the situations that he is in.

I for one, was not impressed with 101 yards, but that was what he was dealt in the context of the game. He could have looked better, sure, but he could have looked worse.

But for Chow to call him "Detmer", and Whittingham to berate his passing game, how can the kid help but be confused?

Utah's coaching staff needs to get on the same page and be consistent with the kid.

I personally was worried about how they held him to a throw count this fall, and I'm not impressed with the results yet.

I hope Wynn gets on track by Saturday.

It could get ugly, but at least there won't be that many people watching the game on TV.

  • Pipes Salt Lake City, UT

A little reality from a Cougar fan. Wynn did what he needed to do to win the game. He wasn't the one making the play calls from the booth. Why expend more than necessary when playing a team like Montana State? For me, the jury is still out on Wynn. I won't make a decision until Saturday.
In response to Mormon Ute, check Heaps stats for the second half. Not bad by any standard.

"Wynn, Whittingham agree QB needs more confidence"

    No problem.

The Trojans are famous for helping faltering quarterbacks regain their confidence, especially in their own back yard.

USC's linebackers are especially helpful in that regard.

As long as the BYU fans continue to disrespect our QB and team it will just make it that much more fun on September 17th when we surprise them.

If Wynn can have a good game at USC, win or lose, he'll be ready for BYU and so will the rest of the team. That's whay I'm hoping for.

As for all the Heisman banter, Wynn was never on the Heisman radar and if Jake Heaps was, he dropped off after Saturday's game. I saw nothing Saturday to indicate that Jake Heaps is going to catapult to Jimmer Fredette stardom any time soon. He obviously has some work to do.

The real question is in week 3, will utah be overconfident after knocking off Sc, and end up in a close game with a team that just came off of a major beatdown from the longhorns who are looking to right their ship?
