Actually catching the ball helps huh cougars? Why wasn't this told to the receivers last year?

Don't let your hatred of BYU consume you. No one here takes you seriously.

Can't wait to see it in action!

As part of my responsibility to hype Heaps and the Cougars for the coming season (it's in the BYU-fan job description), I decided to compare a common opponent from last season...

UTEP vs. Arkansas, week 11, in Arkansas. Score: 58-21 Arkansas (then ranked 15). Ryan Mallet threw for 215 yards and 5 touchdowns, completing 73% of his passes. Arkansas' defense held UTEP to a total of 355 yards (including 117 on the ground).

BYU vs. UTEP, bowl game, in NM. Score: 52-24 BYU (unranked). Jake Heaps threw for 264 yards and 4 touchdowns, completing 74% of his passes. BYU's defense help UTEP to a total of 233 yards (including -12 on the ground).

Arkansas was the 2nd or 3rd best team in the SEC, went to a BCS game and almost won. If anything you could argue that UTEP was more pumped for their potentially win-able bowl game than their payday SEC under-the-bus game. They had more time to prepare and heal and their qb was already injured.

That is why we Cougar fans are excited this year :)

A 67 yard field goal? That would break the all-time NFL record! Sorensen must have some kind of leg to even be thinking he can hit from that distance. I know he came up a little bit short, but gee whiz, who wouldn't?

    @Kammie

4yds... that sounds familiar... oh, wait for it... Same amount of yds that your star Thretton put up in the RED / White for the WHOLE game.

    Thanks for trolling!

Heaps to Apo will become as common a phrase as Stockton to Malone used to be.

It's not very often when Bronco gushes like this in a practice. I wish I could have been there in person to see it. I can't wait until the Cougs get to TX on Sept 10. I have tickets on the 40 yard line, 20 rows up in the middle of the TX crowd. Look for me on TV. I'll be the one wearing blue and white in the middle of a sea of orange.

Sorensen will hit a 60+ yarder before his career is over. Unfortunately for him, Bronco will likely only let him try one that long just before the end of the half, the end of the game, or with a huge lead. The risk of missing and giving up that type of field position is a big risk.

Surprise, surprise, surprise the first to comment on a BYU article. Hows mom?

Get ready for that line to be repeated over and over again: Heaps to Apo Touchdown!

    Go Cougars!

    @Pipes & Bball...

Amen, brutha!! Thanks for your comment(s). Is there a more pointless poster ev-ar!!? The thing is, I don't think chrissy actually knows anything about sports at all or is even a fan of any team at all. All that ever shows up is anti-BYU drivel and never anything about rooting for a fav team...

Just pointless. And 99.9994% wrong each time too.

Nice to hear that Justin Sorensen has some range. 67 yards is a kick from midfield! If he can kick accurately from that distance he could play a part in beating some tough opponents this year!

Ute fans, go post on the Ute articles. Oh that's right nobody reads or cares about them.

    Kamute:

If you are looking for 4 yard draw plays you don't need to watch or read up on BYU practices, just look to your own backfield.

With a rugby player, a freshman and a JC transfer 4 yard draw plays will be the norm.

  • oldcougar Orem, UT
    Aug. 10, 2011 7:20 a.m.

What's wrong with a 4 yd draw play. 3 X 4 = 12, first and 10. I'll take it any day. Keeps the defense honest, causes the linebackers to cheat a little, and before they know what hit them, it's Heaps to Apo (et. al.) for 20 yards +.

  • WhatsInItForMe Orem, Utah
    Aug. 10, 2011 9:01 a.m.

    Shaybo might be correct.

On ALL of the sports articles on DNews since Aug 1st for BYU & Utah:

    - Utes averaged 19.7 comments (629/32), with a high of 150 on Aug 3rd, which is their ONLY ONE over 100, and that's the same one of BYU's over-100 articles, too, as it was a shared topic for both schools.

    - BYU averaged 47.4 comments (1516/32), with a high of 171 on Aug 8th, and 4 others over 100.

Note that both schools got the SAME NUMBER of sports articles.

You got a point, there, Shaybo!

If Ute trolls fed their own articles as much as they do BYU's, then maybe they could catch up?

"I'm a BYU fan, but this article is lame and very pointless."

You're a pretty lame fan then. It's great to see Apo catch a bomb, while running, with great coverage. This is great news.

Sorensen 67 yard attempts, and just missing? He is going to win us games this year. I hope he's as good as Alex Henery at Nebraska. That guy did not miss anything.

These type of WRs have not be seen at BYU (except for Collie) Big, physical and fast. Jake Heaps couls put up some serious numbers this season and next. I think most of us have known BYU / Utah games would be close the past few years (08' and 04', Utah was just better) but this year I'm calling it... BYU WILL beat Utah by 17 or more this season!

"during Tuesday's practice, a 70-yard strike from Heaps that Apo caught on the run and raced into the end zone. The tight-spiral pass covered about 60 yards in the air."

I'll bet Wynn couldn't throw the ball 60 yards if he was standing on the field by himself.

"In other news, deluigi rushed for 4 yards on a terrific draw play."

First of all, its DiLuigi. Second, we all know that if Apo were wearing a Utah jersey Ute fans would be gushing about him. He is exactly the kind of player Ute fans claim BYU is not able to recruit - African-American, fast, tall, athletic, NFL potential. And yet, BYU has at least two receivers who fit that description this year, along with the #1 rated QB recruit in the nation in 2010 throwing the ball to them. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Nice comparison. Was UTEP's starting QB playing in both of those games?

Gosh, maybe I should fly in and cool off in that 90 deg. climate-controlled BYU training facility the cougars are feebly preparing in for the Ol' Miss game. Right now in Dallas it is 108 degrees and the heat index is 123. On the news last night they said that the SMU field was 138 degrees. Four days ago a high school coach here died of heat stroke after only being out in the weather for over 2 hours. Six HS football players have also died, many brutally ill as well.

Hey Bronco, maybe you should hold practice in the BYU saunas in full pads. That is what it will be like at Ole Miss. Buckle-up blue boys!

I can't wait for that first run up the gut when Thretton just levels one of your poor LBs. He will run over and through byU's transparent D on 9/17.

Before the BYU faithful gets all amped-up about Jake Heaps, let's see if he can win ONE road game against a team other than lowly CSU. He has nothing of merit to show yet. I think BYU fans should start talking on 9-18.....see where BYU stands at that point.
