Well that makes this pretty easy then. One more reason not to support Huntsman.
I've been trying to keep an open mind about the guy. And I admire him for
taking a stand. But this is a bad stand. As anybody with an honest
understanding of finance out there can explain - the sky is not falling.
Raising the debt ceiling is a bad idea for exactly the reasons that a once
more-lucid Senator Obama outlined in 2006 when it was the Democrats braying
against it and the Republicans claiming the world would end if we did not. Those outside the beltway -- like Dave Ramsey, if anybody out there
follows his work -- are understandably perplexed about doomsday scenarios and
outright lies about this alleged "crisis".Utah's Senators
are right, in this instance, to stand on principle and oppose raising the debt
ceiling. If we don't raise it, then we just have to be a little more thoughtful
in how we spend what we have left for the rest of the year. That's it.
"Thoughtful spending." Not the end of Social Security payments to
people who banked it, not a U.S. economy crash, "careful spending" --
Seeing he was Obama's right hand man in China, we can see why Jon Huntsman Jr.
is the first Republican presidential candidate to support the 11th-hour proposal
to raise the debt ceiling that Congress is considering, but the Tea Party could
still block it in the House also. Huntsman the former governor of Utah,
expressed support for the deal, calling it a positive step (for House Speaker
John Boehner of Ohio that grabbed 98 percent of everything he asked Obama for),
that will not be cutting our nation's crippling debt. The U.S. debt limit would
rise by at least $2.1 trillion, tiding the Treasury over through the 2012
elections. Without legislation in place by the end of Tuesday, the Treasury
would run out of cash needed to pay all its bills. Administration officials say
a default would ensue that would severely damage the economy. Bachmann, Romney
and Newt Gingrich announced their opposition. Thank God Social Security,
Medicaid, Medicare and programs for veterans and federal retirees would be
exempt. Hope the New committee will work for us also. Who knows?. Boehner
needs to step down if he won't tax the wealthy rich and all tax cheats.
No surprise here. Huntsman is simply following is liberal leaning politics and
that is why the man has fallen out of favor with the GOP. I'm really surprised
that Huntsman thinks he can win a GOP nomination especially after the Nov 2010
election results that sent a clear message that people were sick of the Bob
Bennett purple Republicans.
What do you expect from a Democrat masquerading as a Republican.
Re: UtahVoter - 5:01 p.m.Reply: Is he right though?. Dave Ramsey
seems to think, the debt ceiling debate in Washington D.C. is just the kind of
doomsday scenario the media loves. The story goes like this. Congress must
raise the nation's debt ceiling or the U.S. will, for the first time ever,
default on its debt payments, possibly causing a downgrade in the U.S. credit
rating, a stock market crash and skyrocketing interest rates. "Financial
experts" are lined up, waiting for their chance to warn us of the coming
"debt-pocalypse." Even if Congress doesn't raise the debt ceiling,
the U.S. is not going to default on its debt payments. Thats not a hope. Not
positive thinking. It's a mathematical fact. The U.S. government takes in $2.6
trillion a year and its debt payments are $400 billion. That's like a household
that brings in $260,000 having to make a $40,000 payment. Our country is facing
a bigger problem than the debt ceiling "crisis." It is the idea that
the government will solve our problems. The last few weeks are proof that
politicians are incapable of solving anything.
Again - he is thoughtful, intelligent, collaborative, pragmatic, and
non-dogmatic. Everything you really want and need in a leader and yet
everything that the extreme majority of the Republican party currently despise.
I agree with Idaho Coug. This is a key reason to vote for Huntsman. He seems to
be the only one with any common sense.
Huntsman not only has common sense, he is the most qualified. I'm looking to
see him be our next Republican President.
Sane person, capable of nuance and unwilling to stoop to meaningless
propaganda. Therefore he has no chance to win primaries in the Republican
party. he should start a new party after this failed attempt.Wait until we get to the summer and he has under 10 delegates, if he
sticks it out the whole race.He got the fewest votes of any person
who got any votes at all, in the Denver straw poll of western conservatives this
weekend. under 1%. The three top candidates actually address the meeting.
Cain won half the votes. Perry was a strong 2nd. Santorum, who until now, was
under 5% in all polls, came in 3rd. The top 3 vote getters all addressed the
meeting. Romney and Bachmann both got about 9%.Nate Silver of
538 claims that of all Republican candidates, only Rudy Guliani would WIN vs
Obama if the election were held today, although Romney would be the next closest
at 48-46. Guliani received ZERO votes from the conservatives of the west in the
I could honestly support Huntsman in 2016.. I feel he is very qualified. His
only true weakness or fault is his party of choice.
What on earth is the "yardstick" by which we are measuring these
candidates?I recall once hearing a woman say that she would vote for
Sen. Frank Church because "he is so good looking."I hear
some on this forum who say they are supporting so and so because of what he can
do for Utah yet I almost never hear anyone ask what he can do for America. Is it all about money and how much Federal money the elected official can
bring back to the state? I have heard it said that the major
failing of the capitalist system is greed.Easily observed and the increase
in our sense of entitlement is what is destroying America. What's in it for me?
Our desire for "Cradle to Grave Security" will be our
downfall. Let me help you across the street lest you get run over and I will
steal your wallet or purse on the way over. Did anyone even notice
how the new "Debt Deal" took your money yesterday? Inflation -
increasing the money supply - is a very good pickpocket. You don't even know he
is there! The theft continues and so does the Invasion!
Huntsman continues to sound more and more like the 2012 Democratice VP
candidate....pretty obvious that's where he'll end up isn't it?
Further proof that Huntsman and his liberal ideology is exactly what is NOT
needed in the White House. Obama has certainly messed things up, and Huntsman's
policies would be a continuation of most of Obama's polieis (albeit moderated
somewhat).Sorry, Silver Spoon Jonny, your services are not
needed.By the way, the latest Hot Air poll on presidential
candidates shows Huntsman with a handful of votes, statistically zero. Where he
He seems to be the most reasonable of the current Republican presidential
candidates. I dislike ideologues. The real solution to this
problem is through limiting spending and increasing taxes to reach a sustainable
equilibrium. The USA can no longer afford such a large military and there must
be serious reform of medicare and social security. The USA will no longer be
the wealthy nation it once was. That's a sobering fact but it is inevitable.
It's time to recognize the new normal and adjust the US lifestyle to match.
Other advanced industrialized countries have done quite well economically and
socially with approaches very different from the US model. Perhaps the US
should look to Scandinavia, Germany or even some of the smaller city-states for
inspiration. Take a look at the Human Development Index and you'll see that
the social democracies of northern Europe are doing quite well.
Huntsman is the only decent, rational, reasonable candidate running for or
suggested for the Republican nomination for President. He is a truly
conservative, thinking, pragmatic person who is not an ideologue. Of course
those in the far right fringes would reject him.
What I like about Jon Huntsman is that he is a caring person even for those he
disagrees with. That to me is true Christianity. I am a 93 year
old conservative Christian and want the best man to bring this country back to
it's senses. Read Jon Huntsman's web site and you'll see what a great president
he will make. Jon is a well qualified person who deeply cares for all people. He
does more than talk. He gets my vote.
OK, folks, the article is about Huntsman agreeing with the bill to raise the
debt ceiling, not about who is or isn't the best candidate. Please keep your
comments germane to the article. He does so, saying the bill is a
monumental step toward cutting spending. Bull pucky. This bill is a dodge. To
get Tea Partiers (who were elected on the hope of fiscal responsibility,
remember?) to agree to it, it had to cut spending more than it raised the debt
ceiling. Something like raising the DC $2 Trillion, and cutting spending $2.1
Trillion. But only $21 Billion of those cuts go into effect this year, while we
can borrow as fast as we want to get that extra spending money into the hands of
congress! I am appalled. To whom is Huntsman pandering with his
endorsement? How about this for fiscal responsibility: Move the cap
on Social Security withholdings for the rich up to the $500K income mark.
Anybody out there listening? Know what I'm talking about? But spending also
needs to be seriously slashed, or we will continue the downward spiral.... With
all the unconstitutional spending done by Congress, real reform is needed NOW!!
His comment about Michelle Bachman's good looks would be like someone saying Jon
Huntsman isn't getting the support he wants because although he is a good
looking man, he has a goose neck! What does that have to do with the price of
tea in China??? Notice though, he supports the debt bill, that does tell you why
he isn't going to be considered a serious contender, because he isn't right for
the job as a republican, that is for sure! It's simple, you have to
cut more than you spend, and you have to continue to cut, and cut taxes and make
the United States more Business Friendly! Break regulation to allow our
resources to be safely tapped, and used efficiantly, safely and costly! Have
laws to help DESTROY UNIONS and give equal and incentive pay to middle class
families and reward companies who pay respective wages and are competitive! Make
Trade Deals that are Equal in trade and imports so people buy what we produce,
and start to produce again! Put out a big "Buy American" campaign to
gather in American Pride once again and move forward like that, that is how to
fix our country!
CougarKeith,Of all the candidates, Huntsman knows the most about the
price of tea on China.Don't you think that should earn your vote?
