Congrats, Jimmer. Keep up the good work. Have fun playing for the Kings.
What's next? Is there an annual award for world's greatest athlete?
He will never achieve the greatness of Danny Ainge.
Congratulations! Way to Jimmer the ESPY's!
Nice Jimmer! That is awesome! What an incredible year! Thanks for coming back
for your senior season! Best choice ever!
I guess I missed responses from Ute fans admitting they were wrong after all
the nasty things they said about Jimmer. Now that most of the media has
recognized Jimmer, it is time for at least one Ute to admit they were wrong.
The bling just keeps on coming! Congrats Jimmer. Did I mention, I'm now a
As great as Danny Ainge was, Jimmer broke every record Danny set!
Jimmer is a tremendous talent but he is an even better person! I just love
seeing good things happen to good people.
Congrats, well done Jimmer.
OK, reality check...The ESPY and other awards were given to Jimmer for what he
achieved this year. Why bring up Danny Aunge? Ainge had great success witht he
CEltics but one has to wonder how great he would have been has he not been
teamed iwht Bird, McHale, Parrish and DJ. I can't stand it when people make such
ignorant comments about Jommer's future. Congrats to a great young man on an
With all the Awards and Trophies at BYU, now you can add an ESPY! The premiere
University in the state, with the Premiere athletes. There is no doubt!
I guess he is more known than just by BYU fans. Great job Jimmer!
Way to Go Jimmer! He's a King!
Well deserved Jimmer! Jazz should have picked you at 3! It would have been sweet
seeing you 30'feet out and seeing the defense pick their poison between you,
Favors and big Al. Also, may you light it up against every team that passed you
up; including Oconner, Hornacek, Miller, Corbin, and Layden. It would have been
sweet watching the Jazz rebuild with you, Favors, and Hayward. And you played
great defense at BYU as people don't remember all the steals you had early in
your career, including the picking of pocket against A&M at midcourt... If I
know that, why don't NBA/jazz scouts???Guess who's jersey will outsell the
whole Jazz teams this year by himself? Jimmers! Oh what could have been. Jazz
had a DWill, Stockton, Mark Price, Steve Nash, and Rocky all in one package and
didn't want it. He even wanted to be here. oh what could have been. Mark my
I didn't think he was going to get this one. Great honor. Go Kings!
Jimmer has already made his mark.He will be followed from now on, no
matter where he plays, and will draw bigger crowds and more dinero for any team
he plays for, even the lowly Clippers.
Great picture!Jimmer fan for LIFE!
Congrats Jimmer, well deserved! Looking forward to watching you Jimmer the NBA
with the Kings!
I don't think Jimmer is a better "athlete" than Cam Newton, as the
award suggests. The award he should have been given (but doesn't exist) should
be along the lines of most fascinating or outstanding male college athlete. But
I was still excited to see him get it. Hopefully there will be an NBA season so
that we can watch him!
Chris B | 3:39 p.m. April 29, 2010 "Jimmer is not even in the
top 10 players - in the MWC. He is way ovverated, can't play D, will probably be
sick half of next season, and average 10 and 2. Sorry tds, your team is going
nowhere. It will be another 20 years until your next tourney win."DesNews | 8:50 p.m. July 13, 2011 "After winning nearly every
collegiate national player of the year honor including the Naismith, Wooden and
AP awards, former BYU basketball star Jimmer Fredette added one more award

That is he last picture you will see of him unguarded now that he is in the NBA
just like what happened with Florida,.
Mountanman | 9:20 p.m. July 13, 2011 , As great as Danny Ainge was, Jimmer broke

it took the careers of BOTH BYU's starting guards to break Ainge's record. That
said, Go Jimmer! Wish you'd been acquired by the Jazz!just-a-fan |

teams reaching the NBA Finals: The Trailblazers and the Suns. Seems you were
ignorant of Ainge's past.
Looks like good guys CAN finish first!
JohnJacobFlorida had to double- and triple-team Jimmer to slow him
down. Try that in the NBA, and you'll be destroyed by players who truly are left
I am a huge Jimmer fan, but I need to correct something that is repeated
incorrectly by many fans. Jimmer didn't break every record Danny Ainge set.
Jimmer Fredette scored more points than any BYU player in history. Jackson Emery
has more steals than any Cougar ever. And Matt Montague has the most assists of
any Y player. Guess who's number two on each of those lists? Danny Ainge played
had more consistent scorers on his team, so unlike Jimmer, Ainge didn't always
draw double- or triple-teams. Jimmer had to fight with a bigger target on his
back than Ainge. Overall, though, it took three guys to break Ainge's records.
And if the 3-point line had been adopted before the 1977 season, Ainge would've
put the points record out of reach. Jimmer got an extra 296 points because he
shoots long.Of course, Ainge got to start all four years, whereas
Jimmer wasn't allowed to play ahead of capable (but non-All-Star) Ben Murdock as
a freshman. Jimmer's #4 in steals and #5 in assists; he's a phenomenal player.
But Ainge may have been better.
Still beyond me how the Jazz managed to miss on the opportunity to draft Jimmer.
Atta boy, Jimmer! Is he ever not going to win an award he's nominated for?Perhaps Jake Heaps will be in the mix next year?
Might as well enjoy the ride while he can!!! I did get a chuckle out of Jimmer
saying his "girlfriend" made him look good on the red carpet!
Justin Timberlake has to feel like the luckiest guy in the world to get a
picture with Jimmer.
A nice honor for a fine young man. To other commenters, there is no need to
detract from the accomplishments of others or compare athletes. Just let
everyone enjoy the moment.
I can't forget this gem (typical myopic Y hatred) from UtahCountyUte:"Jimmer Fredette and BYU basketball are not nationally relevant."Congratulations to Jimmer. Keep proving the naysayers wrong well into a
hopefully long and storied NBA career.
Jazz fan, BYU fan, and Jimmer fan here. The Jazz didn't really have a shot at
Jimmer once Sacramento decided they wanted him and pulled off the trade to move
up to 10. Sure, the Jazz could have tried to move up from 12, but trades are
rarely as simple as saying "hey, we want that player/draft pick; wanna
trade?" Who do they give up? A panic trade is the last thing they
wanted. And taking him at #3? Please, just stop. I would be giddy if
Jimmer turns out to be one of the best 3 players in this draft, but none -- NONE
-- of the top commentators or analysts out there had him higher than #7, and I
doubt any pro scouts did either. Player evaluation is an inexact science at
best. Kanter was a very defensible pick, but given his lack of experience, he
could be a stud or a complete bust. The only thing I'm sure about is that I have
no idea how Jimmer, Kanter, or Burks will turn out long term.
Hey, Jimmer was unreal, loved watching him play.....what a talent.he was the
best college athlete by far and away in my book. I guess we'll have to wait
another 30 years for another Ainge or Fredette for BYU to make it to the sweet
I was priviledged to see Jimmer play a number of games this past year in the
Marriot Center. I can honestly say, after being at numerous BYU sporting events
over more than 3 decades, that men's basketball this year was as fun to watch as
ANY of the great moments in BYU sports. Thanks Jimmer!
I don't really care about JT, but a pic with Jimmer and Aaron Rodgers?? SWEET!
Bobby joe hit it right on. So true. Worst decision the Jazz ever made but I
hope Kanter works out for them.
Congrats! Although, it is kind of weird that Justin Timberlake is involved with
all of this.
Congratulations Jimmer! You and Justin look cute in your matching
outfits. Have fun in Sacramento.
I think Fredette was thrilled to have his pic taken with Timberlake. Justin has
well over 100 million fans worldwide and could buy Jimmer with the change that
fell behind his car seat.
I just hope that when he starts playing with the big boys he can live up to all
the hype. If I remember correctly, Greg Ostertag was supposed to be a great
player too. Just sayin'....
mgr63The most important feature of that photo is that Justin
Timberlake and Aaron Rodgers are in the photo with Jimmer holding the ESPY
trophy, and Kemba Walker and Cam Newton are NOT!
Who is Justin Timberlake and why should such a nonentity be in a picture with
the athletes of the year? Was he some token presenter?Congrats to
Jimmer, Derek and the Mavs. Well deserved recognition. I imagine I will get to
see the Cougars BB team in the sweet 16 a few more times in my life but I doubt
I will ever see the Utes achieve that before I die. Too bad because with all the
money the Utah program will have available they still may not be able to compete
at the level they achieved in 1998. Good if they do though.
Where does Jimmer keep all these trophies? He's gonna need two homes.Congrats and thanks for a great year!
I loved the Jazz! I was Karl Malone's personal advertising photographer for 9
years. I am glad that the Utah Jazz didn't take Jimmer. Of course every Utah
Mormon wanted him to stay in that weird place. Why wouldn't they? Yes, he is a
tremendous talent, but against decent competition his shooting percentage was
atrocious and he really has never shown that he can play tight D. Yes, he made
the BYU cagers relevant, finally after 30 years, but in NBA play he could get
burned by many people that are in that league currently. His 40 foot 3s would
never be allowed by any coach in the NBA. I admire Jimmer and his
character......but he ain't no Pete Maravich in any way. Pete, was the best
all-around basketball player ever to play college hoops......hands down. Why do
cougie fans dare compare?.....ridiculous.
mgr63 What I don't understand about your post, and many others like
it is this...Before Carl Malone, Pete, or even Jordan, there is
always someone they will never measure up to, someone in the past that was
"The Best." I am confident that some one, somewhere told people that
Jordan would never be better than _____ (you pick the person.) In fact, I
remember reading an article or two when Jordan went out with his knee injury
that he would never come back and dominate ever again.Yet, they rose
to greatness. Now, I as much as I like Jimmer, I am not comparing him
to Pete, or Jordan, but all greatness starts somewhere. All undefeated seasons
start with a single win. All records broken start the same."Cougie fans" dare to compare, just like every other fans dare to
compare. Comparing them is how we put them in context. What would Pete have
done with a 3 point line? What would Jimmer have been in Pete's time? No one
knows.BYU fans are no different than any other fans. But kudos for
getting in a couple of anti-mormon, anti-Utah, and anti-BYU jabs.
Love The Jimmer but cannot stand the ESPYs (or all the million award shows).
Hey lets pat ourselves on the back even more that we already do. It just
constantly reminds me that ESPN wants so desperately to be like MTV.
@mgr63 Justin Timberlake might have well over 100 million fans worldwide and
could buy Jimmer with the change that fell behind his car seat, but he lacks
athleticism, can't shoot the three as well as Jimmer and doesn't play very good
defense. He probably won't make it in the NBA and the Jazz didn't draft him
either. What exactly is your point?
@mgr63You just can't resist bashing Mormons in your posts can you?
It doesn't really bother me but it does greatly detract from the credibility of
your comments.Getting back to Jimmer, you said that "against
decent competition his shooting percentage was atrocious". Explain then how
Jimmer had a 45% FG and a 40% 3-pt FG percentage during his senior year while
the Cougars had a top 5 RPI and notched ten wins against NCAA tournament teams.
The Cougars faced plenty of "decent competition last season and every
single team employed a defensive strategy that focused solely on trying to stop
Jimmer and yet he still led the nation in scoring. Sorry my friend but
percentages don't lie. I will concede your point on his defensive abilities but
Jimmer was by far the best shooter in this year's NBA draft.
mgr63But I don't understand...according to you... everybody hates BYU and
everything asociated with them especially in sports...so how can this be...
Jimmer being so popular and all. It just doesn't make any sense...according to
you...that is... and did I miss something there about you actually saying
something minutely positive about Fredette???And wow...The Utes need
to hire you to be thier PR man and personal team photographer...you made it sooo
possible for Karl and the Jazz to win all those NBA Championships. Let's
see...How may were there again??? I bet your the guy who could take a doormat
bottom feeding season like the upcoming Ute 2011 football season and transform
it into roses. Yes... You're the dude who can do all of that...I'm sure.
Thankfully, this is the end of James Fredette's 15 minutes of fame. Now it's on
to being a back up guard in Sacramento. Can anyone name a back up guard from
last year's Kings team? Didn't think so.
HAHA Byu fans... If they aren't arguing with Utah about sports they are arguing
amongst themselves about Byu players. Anyways, despite being a Utah
fan, grats to Jimmer on great year and hopefully he can thrive at the next level
Taking the Jimmer at 3 would've been as brilliant as the decision to have JT and
Janet Jackson perform the Half Time show at the Super Bowl; wardrobe malfunction
@Deepblue, they are winners and Jimmer is just a "glimmer" at this
point. Rodgers and Timberlake have done "it." They won the prize in
Sorry, this award should have gone to Anthony Robles of Arizona State who was
born with one leg and won an NCAA championship, a truly inspiring story. He
also went undefeated on the season. For the record, I love Jimmer
and if Robles couldn't win the award he would be my choice, but my choice would
have been Robles.
Saying Jimmer can't play defense because he didn't during his senior year is
just being close-minded and anti-anything-BYU.Those of us who
watched his career, and know that he ranks among the top in steals historically
for BYU, know he CAN play good enough defense to hold his own, when he needs
to.The ultimate defensive play is a steal. And Jimmer had plenty of
them during his BYU career, including during his senior year.He
simply had a different purpose his last year than emphasizing defense. Can't say DUH loud enough! He'll do just fine in the NBA, which BTW
is made up of mostly previous college students, not supermen that never went
through college to get to the pros.ALL NBA players had a learning
curve when they went pro.Gonna love it when Mr. Fredette jimmers
ya'll! Provided we ever have an NBA again.
And this was the guy that wasn't good enough for the NBA draft, was a one-trick
pony, a ball hog, a gimmick, arrogant, etc.You BYU haters continue
to crack me up. Keep it coming, the more you post, the sillier it gets.
It has been exciting seeing Jimmer with the acolades, they just keep coming and
will continue for the next 20 years. Sad the Jazz did not recognize the talents
of the best college player playing in their backyard. KOC stated he slept well
after the draft. He will eventually see him in is worse nightmares, hitting 3's
like he has. As good as he is he will continue to improve. The Jazz should
have picked him at 3 and if they had, it would be considered a steal when the
draft is looked back in hindsight.
I was Karl Malone's personal Doctor, and sold cars to Stockton, also, I was the
personal chef to the Pope and I washed the cars for the Harlem Globetrotters.
Jimmer will never be the best power forward in the NBA, never break the all time
assist record, never live in the Vatican, and never be from Harlem. In fact, he
should just be happy with being a top 10 pick in the NBA draft. What a sad
ending to an average career. (sarcasm is free with this post)
Has any other Utah Team had one of these?
Lone Star Cougar "Has any other Utah Team had one of
these?"ESPYs have been awarded since 1993 and many of the
categories for ESPYs change from year to year. There might have been a few
players with Utah connections who played on teams that won an ESPY, but these
are the only individuals with Utah connections who have won an ESPY:Best Male Athlete - Steve Young, San Francisco 49ers, 1995Male USA
Olympic Athlete - Rulon Gardner, 2001Best Male College Athlete -
Jimmer Fredette, BYU, 2011
I think it is always an honor when our local athletes are honored. It doesn't
matter the university or sport. Everyone has some opinion, thats why they vote
on the awards. Anyone who begrudges Jimmer this honor, in my opinion, either
doesn't understand the process or is small minded. I was happy when Utah had two
number one draft picks. I feel good when Steve Smith makes a diving catch. My personal opinion is that on this thread it is fun to banter back and forth.
That is, until it becomes about religion or personal. Most of those IMHO who
critize most severely, could not stand under the microscope that they try to put
others under. Just saying.
Cael Sanderson won an ESPY for his 159-0 career record. I think it was in the
same category as Jimmer, Best Male College Athlete.
