Just a thought- the PAC 10.2 championship game is on a Friday. ESPN must have had some other big boy conferences to highlight on the following day. (ie- enough with the Friday thing).

Looking forward to the Cougs laying down the hammer on Utah on Nat'l TV!

    10 reasons why BYU wins:

#1- Heaps-Apo-Hoffman trio. Look for secondaries to have fits against these tall, fast, and athletic receivers. The routes should be precise and crisp, which will be very tough for inexperienced corners to cover.

#2- Experienced O-line for the BYU offense. Gave up only 1 sack to the Utes last season.

#3- BYU has three returning RB's with experience. Running behind a very big and experienced O-Line. New coach is making huge improvements.

#4- 8 returners to a defense that was top 20 at the end of the year. Add in Kavienga and Fongupo as well as the return of Pendleton. The front 7 will be the best it has been in years.

#5- Jordon Wynn is a bad QB. Does not play well under pressure, recovering from surgery, brand new offense.

#6- No experience at RB. 2 best linemen gone.

#7- Brand New Secondary for Utah.

    #8- Game is in Provo.

#9- Utah returns very little experience at WR. DeVonte Christopoher is the lone returning starter.

#10- Zero experience in Utah secondary.

    35-13

Friday night games are a lot more difficult to attend due to a lot of factors not the least of which is the fact that all of the high schools play that night. Additionally, to make a 7:00 kickoff at LES, a fan may need to take the hole afternoon off work.

I must say, "Thanks, for the memories!!!!"

For the past 5-6 Utah/BYU games in Provo, I have purchased tickets for many of my sons and me. And we have been treated to some incredible games. Remember the snow bowl? (3-0)? 34-31? Luke Staley breaking away late in the game for the game winner? I believe it was 4th and long when the Y receiver caught the ball behind our defensive back which led to the Y winning drive? Surprisingly the last game, left me with one of the fondest memories. The game was in overtime when the two U defenders missed the ball by inches with a BYU touchdown winning the game. NO!!! That was not the favorite memory. It WAS the students and fans mobbing the field despite the warnings on the PA to not do so. They felt sheer joy!! Even the one (or more) shirtless!!!! And I was happyt for them.

Due to costs this year I bought tickets to the USC game. First conference game, Traditional powerhouse. Tommy Trojan. Big time football. I can't wait

    atl134,

Normally I would agree with you. For the past.... I dont know how long, Utah and BYU have played rivalry weekend (the last two weeks of the regular season). Which means both teams have already played in 9 or 10 games.

But this year the game is played in Week 3. Which gives both teams much less time to develop their new inexperienced players and solidify their game schemes to best utilize the talent and strengths of the team.

If the two teams would have played in week 3 of 2010, BYU would have gotten slaughtered. We all saw them go 1-4 due to inexperience. Luckily we had 8-10 weeks to gain experience and level the playing field, which resulted in the close and competitive game.

With 19 returners for BYU and only 11 for Utah. Experience plays a huge role in this game.
It could easily be a blow out.

BYU and Utah should love the exposure. Let's hope it's a great game. I'm a ute season ticket holder and was going to place an order for the BYU tickets. Now I'm thinking it might be pretty cool to sit back at home, throw a party and watch on ESPN. See how it looks to the rest of the world. We all know the BYU-UTAH games are ridiculously exciting live, I hope it comes off that way on TV.

    PSUYB:

Don't worry about the Utah secondary or any part of the defense, they will be suffocating as always. I agree that the Ute's need to worry about the unknown offensive play and Jordan's come back. But remember, its game three so the Utes will have a warm up game against Montana State and a huge test at USC. If the Utes end up 2-0 coming in. Same goes for BYU if they end up 2-0 coming in

I dont see a 2-0 vs 2-0 matchup likely, but it would be great.

Why does everyone think BYU is going to be so great next year?
    Weren't they 6-6 last year?
1 win over a decent SDSU team, but that was counter balanced with a loss to USU.
BYU should win at least 7-8 games this year because of their schedule, but I've heard several BYU fans at work and on the radio saying BYU is going to beat Utah, TCU, and Texas.

What is the reasoning behind all of this super optimism? Is it the same type of hype that was brought up a few years ago going in to the "Quest" season? I would think it would be a little less, after finishing 6-6 last season.

  • Rockwell Baltimore, MD
    May 10, 2011 6:22 p.m.

    Mount Olympus

Your whining makes no sense. You down play BYU fan optimism for 2011, because of last season's 7-6 record.

Then you criticize BYU's "Quest" season optimism, when BYU was coming off back-to-back 8-0 MWC, 11-2 Overall, Top 15 seasons.

    Here's your answer.

BYU had a VERY young team last year, with very tough competition to start the season, a failed two-headed quarterback experiment, a Defensive Coordinator who quit on the team at Utah State, and an Offensive Coordinator who was too timid to let Heaps audible from a run to a pass or to try for a touchdown after Heaps drove BYU inside Utah's 20-yard line with almost 2 minutes remaining in the game.

By season's end, BYU's offense and defense were both operating on all cylinders. All of the roadblocks from last season have been addressed. BYU's offense is going to be a well-oiled machine and BYU's defense will be one of the best BYU has had since Bronco became BYU's head coach.

That thud followed by dead silence you just heard was the epic crash of reality in Utes sports. The networks never have and never will care about the Utes. I thought for sure they would throw them a bone with the USC game, but no such luck. A writer in Cali said he was unable to find any evidence that Utah or Colorado added $1 to the TV deal. I will applaud Utah for the greatest heist in sports history though. To get BCS money on somebody else's merits was unbelievable. Mildred,

We only play 3 friday night games (2 home and 1 away), the Utah State game is annually played on the friday of conference weekend so thats not a surprise. The only other home game on Friday is against Central Florida and then we have one road game against TCU on Friday. The rest of the games will be played on saturday. You could also say that Utah fans like to take out of context and misquote BYU fans all the time.

Please provide a copy of a post where a BYU fan has suggested that BYU is the preseason champ any year. Or a quote please where a BYU fan has said that they are television's #1 show. Or that Heaps will lead BYU to a BCS game with a 10-2 record. Or a quote that Beck will lead the skins to the Super Bowl.

What you have done is given us proof that there are a few Utah fans who like to make up stories about what BYU fans say. Let's just agree that there are unrealistic fans from both sides of the rivalry, but we don't need to paint a whole fan base with a broad brush.

All the bluster, from both sides of the rivalry, about exposure and national tv appearances needs to stop. It's a tad embarassing to see two fan bases go at with one another over such a trivial matter. Exposure and relevancy take care of themselves when you win ballgames. The pithy comments made by Hedge, Veritas, Ducky, ChrisB, Bluto, etc on the DesNews comment boards aren't going to lead to W's on the field for the Men in Red or Blue. Time to grow up people.

    Who's "we", you're a Utah fan.

Utah State became an independent without even having a decent local television contract, let alone a national television contract with ESPN, and with no ability to broadcast their own games.

As far as Nelson; BYU didn't steal him from the Aggies, he made his own choice to leave Utah State for a much better program. Riley is a good athlete and BYU will probably find some way to take advantage of his skill set, but he has practically no chance of ever being BYU's starting QB again.

It's one thing for fans to make a special effort to watch a game like Auburn vs Alabama on a national network.

Don't be silly, cheeseman187 was obviously talking about the BYU/TCU game.

Midday on Black Friday, lost amidst the chaos of Christmas shopping and large family gatherings, is hardly the ideal time to attract a large national audience, especially if the game isn't being broadcast on one of the major networks.

Friday night would probably be better for fans watching on television, but how many fans would show up at RES on a Friday night in late November?

I am not surprised, or offended, that Utah is "under-represented" on the upcoming fall's Pac-12 TV schedule. Many of the tenured teams, and CU, have larger fan-bases, and most have been on the national radar for longer. But if Utah is able to be successful, I am confident that ESPN and FOX Sports will give them more air-time.

    Who can complain about that?

Although this shows that BYU has a better reputation with ESPN and that the ratings expectations are higher for BYU nationally, there are still a few "TBD" games on the ESPN/PAC schedule that could feature Utah if they are having an outstanding season and are the hottest team in the PAC.

As much as I like to make fun of utah fans the truth is I like that Friday after Thanksgiving game date. I think that is a great day to hold a game and if it was BYU playing that day I would definately go or watch it on tv if it was a road game. It would be better if it were an afternoon game instead of an evening game however.

Still I don't know if it will have much for ratings. That is a big shopping day, biggest of the year, alot of people will be going on dates, many will be out of town, etc. Also neither of the schools is much of a ratings draw anyway. So while the date is probably good for fans of the 2 schools I don't think it does much of anything for anyone else.

It's great to have the BYU/Utah rivalry game back on ESPN. Nobody here will ever miss the MTN.

A mid-September game will take some getting used to. It would have been better if the PAC 12 had allowed the Colorado/Utah game to be played in September, so BYU/Utah could have continued to be played in late November. USC and Stanford always play Notre Dame later in the season so there's already presedence in the PAC 10 for OOC rivals to be played during the conference season.

Regardless of what some shortsighted Utah fans may say, Colorado will never replace BYU as Utah's biggest rival. The "rivalry" Utah and Colorado once had 60 years ago is meaningless.

But the Cougs will get an easy win in Provo on September 17 on ESPN2 (31-10). There will not be a 4th and 18 conversion to set up the winning score. There will be no OT heroics with a TE splitting the defenders who looked like two of the three stooges. It will be a steady dose of Heaps, Hoffman, Apo, Jacobson, Luigi and Quezada. With a sprinkling of Nelson, Kariya and Phillips thrown in for good measure. BYU's defensive will be up close and personal with Wynn all game.

You need to do your homework before you go out bashing. The reason Utah does not have any ESPN games this season is because the 2011 season is still part of the OLD Pac 10 tv contract (which Utah is not apart of). Colorado has an ESPN game because of their previous tv contract from the Big 12. Its only for the 2011 season Kitty Cat fans! Beginning in 2012 when the NEW Pac 12 Contract kicks in. "We are in a better place and Cougar fan knows it."

It all depends on success on the field. Both programs have great potential IF they win.

BYU not being tied to a conference will be judged solely on their own merits. In some ways, BYU has greater potential for national attention simply because of the uniqueness of being independent. Athlon, for example, chose to include a 4-page spread about BYU in the PAC 12 edition of their magazine. That would never have happened if BYU was still in the MWC.

Utah will be judged not only by how well the Utes play, but also by how well the PAC 12 plays. Unless Utah is one of the PAC 12 leaders, the Utes could easily be lost in the shuffle of mid-conference irrelevance.

You're seriously delusional. The home team or conference (in the case of a conference game) owns the television rights. The reason Utah doesn't have any ABC/ESPN games scheduled is because ABC/ESPN didn't find any of Utah's games compelling enough to be selected for a national broadcast. ABC/ESPN got first pick of all home/conference games involving PAC 12 teams and didn't pick Utah.

Utah's game with BYU was scheduled under BYU's contract with ESPN.

Do you really think BYU fans are "jealous" of Utah because BYU already has FIVE games scheduled on ESPN this year, and Utah, without the BYU game, has NONE?

    @bleeder

In case you didn't get it when Veritas and Rockwell explained it to you I'll give it a shot as well.

The HOME teams tv contract decides what network has the option on the game. Half of utah's pac10 games this year are on the road so all of those games fall under the existing pac10 tv deal and if the network that has that deal wanted to broadcast any of those games they could. Obviously they didn't want any of them so that tells you right there what they think about utah.

There is also the small fact that just because utah isn't getting any revenue from the current deal doesn't mean they aren't still part of it. They are now in the pac10. They are no longer in the mwc. If the current network wanted to they could broadcast utah's home games as well and simply don't want to. At minimum I'm sure they could offer utah some pittance for their home games this year and utah would jump all over it. Obviously the network doesn't even feel that is worth doing.

Larry Scott HAD to add 2 teams to make a Championship game. He has watched the SEC and Big XII pull in loads of money from championship games. That is also why the Big10 is going that route as well. Also, look at all the times a PAC 10 team got ripped from a BCS games and even title games. Like Nebraska taking the spot from Oregon even after they lost the Big12 title game, or in USC being left out in 03 despite being #1 in both polls. My favorite was Cal being 'leaped' by Texas in 04 to go to the Rose Bowl. The extra game usually gave those teams a chance to jump up. With a 10 team conference it did not work, so they had to expand to keep up. Adding CO and UT made sense. Had to be a team in the west. The Utes and their BCS games were a good fit with the PAC 10 schools academically as well. A No-brainier for the Utes to make the jump..Congrats. That beings said, you are merely a pawn for the conference. Sorry, it is just the way it is.

What's up with the DesNews reporting? We get two paragraphs that simply regurgitate information from ESPN. How about answering the questions many people have posted here on the board? Namely, what is the television situation for the U for the 2011 season?

They don't fall under the Pac 10 deal, and the new Pac 12 deal starts next year. Who owns the rights to Utah's home games, Utah or the Pac 10 (Since we join this summer)? Has Chris Hill been negotiating TV contracts (can he negotiate TV contracts) for the U's 2011 season? If not, who is?

I'm not even a reporter and I can think of a dozen or so questions to ask Chris Hill about this subject.

In answer to those saying the home team has the rights to the TV contract, that is true if you are not part of a league or if your league allows it. Utah/BYU would have LOVED to sell the rights to the rivalry game, but remember, that pesky MTN TV contract from our conference didn't allow it. So your statements are not completely accurate.

There are only 2 possible answers to that.

    One...the pac10.

    Two...utah itself.

They are no longer in the MWC so the mountain has no any rights to them. Evidence? BYU is no longer in the mwc and sold their rights for this year to ESPN. Obviously the mountain has no claim.

utah is now part of the pac10 so it stands to reason they are subject to the pac10's existing contracts. Just because they aren't getting paid for it doesn't matter. Evidence? They aren't getting any money next year either which is the 1st year of the new deal and they are obviously bound by that deal.

If utah owns their own rights this year then they could cut some kind of deal for their home games with someone. Even a local station. We have heard nothing of any such attempt. That means either the pac10 owns them or else no one wants them.

Like I said before one of the networks could give them a pittance and they'd take it, better than nothing huh? But they obviously don't want them. It is obvious they have no value on their own.

"If utah owns their own rights this year then they could cut some kind of deal for their home games with someone. Even a local station. We have heard nothing of any such attempt. That means either the pac10 owns them or else no one wants them."
    ===

The U of U is in the PAC 12.

The PAC 12 decides which games to show. There a dates left TBA, and Utah may get one of those slots.

However, it is apparent that Larry Scott was needing a 12th body, and took Utah as the best availible candidate that would fit best with the PAC. No promises about exposure.

    Just money.

Personally, I would guess had it been Texas that joined the PAC, Texas would be on TV.

I would also guess that many of the PAC presidents recieved (wink wink) concessions to allow Utah the invite, which might have included a commitment about TV appearances.

I don't think of it as a slam against the quality of the program, as much as the reality that there will not be the TV numbers to justify televising the U.

    @Duckhunter

Utah gets 50% next year. Utah's tiering into full status follows this schedule:

    2011-2012: 0%
    2012-2013: 50%
    2013-2014: 75%
    2014-2015: 100%

I knew Utah wasn't under the MWC's deal anymore come July, and didn't suggest they were.

"utah is now part of the pac10 so it stands to reason they are subject to the pac10's existing contracts." That's not necessarily true, it depends on what the contracts allow in their clauses. It would be nice to know...

The rest of your post is basically what I'm saying, except that I think it comes down to our local news media just going with the flow of what others like Ted Miller write, and not asking the questions we all want answered.

In fact, you, me, and other regular posters could go into the business of looking at the questions posted on these comment boards, ask the questions to the relevant parties, publish it, and probably run a profitable news outlet. I get tired of the "copy and paste" news publishing going on around here.

I'm not too worried about the Utes not appearing on ESPN this year. Whether the games are on ESPN, Fox regional, or some other sports outlet, it's still going to be a lot better than the MTN was. The Utes are the new kids in the Pac-12 so it stands to reason that they have to earn their way into the prime TV slots. Also, if Utah can continue winning like they have the last few seasons, then I have no doubt that more games will be picked up later on in the TBD slots.

BYU fans will finally be able to watch all the games- whether on ESPN or not- it doesn't really matter. Of course all the U fans will be able to watch all their home games- they all fit into that stadium up north.

For BYU and Utah the possibility for a major bowl still exists. Ironically, the one team guaranteed not to play in a major bowl, or any bowl for that matter, is your team. Irrelevant before fall camp even starts. That's you.

Pretty dismal, especially if you believe half of what's written but cheer up!We got good news and of course there's some bad to keep the universe in balance.

Good news... Utes are on ESPN2 thanks to the BYU Cougars
Bad news... If the Utes are anything like last year there's a real problem with nationally televised games and... reruns on BYUtv!

    @utesovertide

Well like I said it can only be one of those two things. Either Utah owns their home rights this year or else the pac10 owns them. If Utah owns them then they should be seeking to make some kind of deal to get them on tv. Since there has been zero news about that being the case then I am assuming the pac10 owns them. With that being the case the fact none of them has been chosen to be televised at all should trouble utah fans. I'm serious about that it should really be a worry.

Even if there is some clause about this in the existing contract the principles are all the same. Fox/ESPN/Utah/pac10 so it would be no real problem to arrange for utah home games to be shown.

My guess is that utah will wind up with a home game or two televised this season but once again this makes them appear to be no more than an afterthought and that isn't a promising thing for utah fans that want to see games. It looks now like utah may spend alot of time on the pac10 network.

    @Duckhunter

Don't worry yourself. I'm not worried. I just want someone who knows to tell me what the plan is so I know what kind of TV package I'll need to have for this season. We know the future seasons are taken care of since we'll have games on FOX and ESPN, so no special packages needed there.

Besides, the Utes made it this far and to a BCS win while being relegated to the dismal MTN network's obscurity. If it happens that we're on the Pac 12 network 80% of the time, I don't really care. We've been nationally successful before without the 'exposure' some BCS schools have.

But again, the network doesn't start for at least another year, so it's kind of irrelevant to the issue. We have some big home games this year and I doubt the Pac fans of those schools are going to be ok with non televised games.

Mediocre is mediocre, but if that's all U aspire to in the PAC 12, go for it.

BYU, on the other hand, has their sights set a little higher, a back to the future 1980's kind of thing - National Championships, Heisman Trophies, prolific offenses, great defenses.

If you were curious how BYU treats the Pac10.X schools in Provo, go to youtube and search for "BYU vs UCLA 2008" video by Furious Monkey, posted by Coug4lyphe. One of the best highlight videos of a BYU football game ever. Shots of Neuheisel in the thumping are precious.

You do realize in 2007, the Utes destroyed UCLA 44-6 at home when they were still highly ranked (#11), right? You can watch that one on youtube as well.

If that's an indication of how Utah treats Pac 12 teams when they come to our house, the Utes will be a dominant force in the conference.

But football is played each year for a reason. Teams and opportunities change.

While Friday games don't have the notoriety of prime time, I've got to say that I don't mind them that much. At least it keeps my Saturdays free (which I know my wife appreciates.

Glad that the Y vs. U game is on ESPN2. That's the best set-up that game has had for a while. I will always wonder what might have been if Utah, BYU, Boise State, and TCU had been in the same conference, especially with Nevada and Fresno State (if those programs stayed viable). However, due to recent actions by the BCS (ordering the Fiesta Bowl to pay 1 million dollars to charity that they were already going to have to pay to charity), I'm sure the MWC never would have entered the BCS. Oh well...

I have no idea what this year's rivalry game is going to look like, which is kind of cool, in a way. It's always unpredictable, but being so early in the year with two teams that have a LOT of questions marks...it should be entertaining.

You do realize that the following week the Utes lost 0-27 to 2-win UNLV, right?

UCLA may have been ranked #11 the week Utah played the Bruins, but they dropped like a stone after that game and finished out of the rankings.

BYU, on the other hand, destroyed UCLA 59-0 in a game that wasn't that close. UCLA hasn't been beaten that badly since a 1920's loss to USC, the Bruin's worst loss ever.

I'm not worried about it. I know I'll be seeing my team play. Whether or not utah fans get to see their team play is the question and it is a big one. Once the pac10 network is up and running then I am sure you will get to see most of utahs games provided the cable and sattelite providers pick that channel up which is no sure thing either.

But it is pretty obvious utah will not be at the top of the list for ESPN or FOX games so getting the pac10 network up and going is going to be very important to utah fans, more so than it will be to the fans of most of the other pac10 schools. It remains to be seen if it will be of any better quality than the Mountain network as well.

But for this season at least it looks like you guys may not even see 1/2 to 2/3rds of utahs games. As of now there is only one of them you know you will see for sure and that is their game with BYU. That is worse than the mtn gave you.

Speaking of busted, hoe exactly have independent teams doing in making it to a BCS game? Here's a hint: mid majors have done MUCH better.

"--FIVE BYU games on ESPN already scheduled-- and BYU hasn't even played their first game as an independent."

The U is having to work for their success while byu is trying to delusionally & pridefully float by on an infalted sense of entitlement. Sounds like there is only one direction byu can go and its not sideways or up.

Hankie, your command and use of large words is laughable.

If any one is delusional it's the many Ute fans that think BYU is going nowhere. The sad thing for many is that BYU has already been to the top and the Utes have not.

Regardless in how people try to diminish BYU's accomplishments it doesn't change a thing. It's history, it happened and it's part of BYU's legacy.

Another thing that aggravates several of you trolls is that BYU is a media darling. Get over it. ESPN simply confirmed it with an 8 yr contract.
