Rumor has it that ESPN felt committed to BYU since they're now committed to ESPN. It's good to see that ESPN is showing all the "love" because those Thursday night 8pm kick-offs are going to be poor ratings come next fall and this might be the only exposure during the "day" that the Cougars will get!!!

    Thursday night games?

Although there's nothing wrong with an occassional Thursday night game, BYU isn't playing any Thursday night games this year.

Do you have any empirical proof that any of BYU's ESPN televised games will be poorly rated, or are you just throwing a jealous rant because your team won't even be on ESPN?

Actually, it's been mentioned a couple of times in the ESPN PAC 12 blog. And Urban Meyer tried his best to hype his old school. But, none of that seems to be capturing the fascination of college football nation.

DESNEWS denied my comment that promoted love in place of hate between Utah and BYU fans. An email that included my explanation of how much better life is without the contentious back and forth between the two fan bases and how this lack of contention has worked for me. A post that expressed happy feelings about ESPN visiting BYU, and happy thoughts about the extended coverage that Utah received from ESPN, Ted Miller, and Urban Meyer recently. It seems that DESNEWS does not want to post positive comments, rather only negative comments that fan the flames of hate.

I'm guessing All of the BYU fans posting here have forgotten that ESPN already stopped at the U to do a series on spring football?

    Some people are clueless.

  • Mount Olympus Salt Lake, UT
    April 22, 2011 9:33 a.m.

ESPN already came to Salt Lake last month.
Did a long segment on the Utes, and their transition to a BCS conference.

  • oh ye confederacy of dunces Flushing, NY
    April 22, 2011 9:40 a.m.

The fact of the matter is that BYU is doing something very interesting next year (independence) while the U is simply joining a new conference (a step up no doubt, but nothing all that interesting outside of the Yew fanbase.)
What BYU has managed to put in place is unprecedented in terms of the exclusive deal w/ ESPN, the broadcasting capabilities of BYU, the multiple neutral site deals that are being brokered...it is a true blow to the BCS, as it demonstrates that a football program can stand alone.
If the Y can put together some solid seasons (which are certainly in store)the results are going to be nothing short of phenomenal--as we will see more and more attention thrown our way from the kings of sports journalism. It's good to have ESPN on our side.

  • Lowell Chad Tempe, AZ

I'm getting really excited about this season with all the recent articles on D-News by Dick Harmon and company, especially the recent Heaps article. I went to our website to look at the football schedule closer to see if it's true that most of the games are scheduled on Thursdays and it's not.

If all BYU games are on ESPN, why does our website list only 3 of them on ESPN?

2011 The year Utah football becomes Utah basketball. Life couldn't be better!

MT Montana State = Win 1-0 (Good Job Wynn 4 int and he hates BYU fans also)

at USC = LOSE 1-1 (Crack!)

at BYU = LOSE 1-2 (BYU by 20, Ute fans begin to jump ship)

    Washington = WIN 2-2 (Maybe)

Arizona State = LOSE 2-3 (Only 5000 tickets sold)

at Pittsburgh = LOSE 2-4 (Talk radio is quiet, Ute fans are burning everything red)

at California = LOSE 2-5 (Utah football has become Utah basketball, terrible)

Oregon State = WIN 3-5 (Every dog gets a bone)

at Arizona = LOSE 3-6 (Back to normal)

UCLA = LOSE 3-7 (Recruits are not opening Ute mail)

at Washington State = WIN 4-7 (Wash St = Idaho St)

Colorado = WIN 5-7 (Just being nice here)

I'm really in awe at the stupidity of some of the posters on here. As has been mentioned, ESPN already had a special on Utah. This will be good exposure for BYU. Both schools are making an interesting transition. I really thought some of this would die down with both schools transitioning into better situations and it being the offseason.

Looks like a "Who's Who?" of college football...."

Ha ha, not really, it looks more like "what's wrong with this picture." One team clearly doesn't belong.

In fact, all of these schools except the team in Provo and Missouri have been to BCS bowls. You don't have the tradition and the success of the big-time programs.

Speaking of the big time, the Utes can hang with that list in terms of BCS bowl wins and dominance. ESPN would've come to the RES, but wait, it already did a big feature on the original BCS busters several weeks back. Been there done that!

    The future is the Utes!

What is wrong with Thursday night games anyway? As I see it, ESPN and Thursday night games made BSU into the program they are today. When you're the only game being played and people want to watch football they watch. If you are playing on a Saturday and there are several games to choose from there are statisically fewer people watching each game. Also on Thursday you are broadcast nationally and on Saturday you might only get regional coverage which again limits the number of viewers and exposure.

  • Duckhunter Highland, UT
    April 22, 2011 10:17 a.m.

    @i still can't say it

Dominance? In what? Dominance is built over time, kinda like what BYU did to the wac. utah has never been dominant at any time. They have had two really good seasons. That is it. They have never dominated a conference. They have no dominance over any top quality team for any period of time. They only have 5 top 25 finishes in the entire history of their program. If that is dominance in a ute fans mind then I am sure you will experience alot more of that "domiance" over the next 40 years. LOL

    DevilishUte,

I watch BYU, Nebraska, SEC big games, Big 10 big games, and ACC big games. The PAC 12 is overrated.

    USC is history

Oregon and Stanford are very good (I'd watch that game and probably USC vs Oregon) So 2!

Oregon St, Wash, Wash St, Ar, Ar st, Col, and Utah are no better than the OLD MWC.

Ha ha, nice try, RES is already basically sold out to season ticket holders. In fact, the demand is so great anymore, you have to be a Crimson Club member to even request tickets.

More like this for the team in Provo:

Idaho = doesn't matter win or lose (Only 5,000 tickets sold)

  • DevilishUte Tempe, AZ
    April 22, 2011 11:12 a.m.

BSU did not play in the MWC last, sherlock. Furthermore, if you followed the PAC-10 you would know that power in the conference shifts from time to time, but the PAC-10 has teams in the mix every year.

Well I watched washington lose to BYU and oregon lose to Auburn. Do those count? I just couldn't get interested in any of the others. I might have watched a Stanford game or two if any of them had been on tv although I certainly didn't waste my time watching the extremely mediocre asu, ua, cal or ucla.

I will watch utah and osu lose to BYU this year although the chances of me watching any of the others play isn't very likely unless it is in a bowl game.

The truth is there just isn't much of interest there to watch.

They are not stopping in Salt Lake at UTAH because Urban Meyer already stopped here to do a better expose on the UTES with them being 1 of 5 schools that get that treatment for Spring ball. Especially since the UTES were headed to a real conference and not to irrelevence. However, it sure is nice that ESPN is showing some support to their irrelevent partners, who will be on ESPN U or BYU TV 99.9% of the time.

15 schools with relevance, that people want to hear about.

Not a pity stop from a guy that opened a suitcase in Utah 7 years ago, who as a professional, is still petty and small enough that he "still can't say it"...

It's too easy to bag on Utah now, as they flounder in basketball (serious, that was rebuilding?), and the fans beat their chests, and no on cares...

    Athletic prowess?

Utah is the guy in the head and wrist bands playing right field in softball, and bats last, so the PAC has enough players and won't forfeit the Championship game.

It's too easy to pile on Utah, so why do it, but since you asked...

  • Pavalova Surfers Paradise, AU
    April 22, 2011 12:50 p.m.

We read the word irrelevance from the hill quite a bit. Yet the ESPN bus is making a stop in Provo next week, Jimmer swept all the POY awards, AND the other sports seem to have had a very successful year.

What exactly does irrelevance refer to in U minds these days? Is Iowa State BCS conference? How about Kansas or Baylor? Oh, wait, I forgot about Vandy and Boston College too? See how easy it is to play the other way?

Btw, the only reason why a stop in SLC was made last month is because Urban is now part of ESPN's crew. Do you really think you play last year had enough merit to warrant a "pit" stop with the truck?

Before anyone says it's all about 2004 and 2008, please stop. It wasn't about the move to the pac12 either...notice there is no stop in Boulder...unless I missed that one.

"Do you really think you play last year had enough merit to warrant a "pit" stop with the truck?"

Do you think BYU's play last year warrants a "pit" stop by the truck? If your answer is "yes" then you are delusional (didn't a team whose colors you stole rock your world last year?). If your answer is "no," then I will use your own words and argument against you....."See how easy it is to play the other way?"

BYU is getting some nice attention. Utah already did. I'm excited, and it's clear that ESPN (and a lot of us) is as well, about the upcoming season and to see what comes of the changes for both teams.

    @ Honor Code;
Your lack of intelligence and jealous obsession of BYU are showing again. Thursday night games are actually rated quite high nationally compared to other games when there is more competition. The games usually kick off at 6 or 7 mountain time(depending on location)and give the participants a great deal of national exposure. having said that, guess how many Thursday night games BYU has in 2011? Zero, nada, zilch. They have 9 Saturday games with no kickoff times decided and they have 3 Friday night Prime Time games against USU, UCF and TCU. More national exposure, more national respect and mor ESPN / BYU TV.

If your going to post; think it through. It will save you some embarrassment.

Apparently you are a 15 year old kid who recently discovered the anonymity of the internet and Des News.
I have no problem with people talking smack. But at least base it in something that isn't childish and easily proven wrong. If you want to share your opinion and say something like, "Heaps is going to pick your young secondary apart", or "Quiz is going to run all over you next year". Or go to the classic debate on these boards as to what is better, historical success, or more recent success. Or make fun of past performance. That is talking smack.
But if you don't see what is stupid about saying something like "ESPN isn't going to SLC, hahaha" when they have just been there; then i don't know what to say to you. What is "boring, boring, boring" is when someone thinks they have just delivered the greatest slam in the world, and it is the dumbest thing you have ever heard.

You're a typical Ute fan who actually thinks the Utes will win the next 10 BCS championships, JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE IN THE PAC12. Ask Arizona and Arizona St how that is working out. Otherwise for those of us outside of Utah, we will once again be relegated to watching fuzzy BYU Sports when they are not on ESPN! And this goes for people who watch BYUtv for other reasons, too!

The remarks here prove once again that BYU is rabidly jealous of Utah's move to the PAC.

This article is an image boost to the Y, yet the FIRST thing you fans jump on is the so-called "snub" of the Utes. That's simply incredible.

No doubt you all will deny this, but it strongly suggests that Utah's new BCS status is constantly in the forefront of Y fans' minds.

Furthermore, this comes as a surprise to no one. BYU is now in bed with the ESPN. It would have been a shock if they didn't go to Provo. ESPN is partners with the Y, so of course they are gonna try to boost interest for a team they will cover regularly.

That said, ESPN has already covered the Utes this spring for a football program, which included Urban Meyer. So there isn't really much for Y fans to brag about here.

Each and every one of you still wish you could imitate Utah: getting a seat at the BCS table. To try and deny that indisputable fact will only make you look ignorant.

    Re: Tomahawk Red

We don't want a "seat at the BCS table." We want to up-end that table, turn over the chairs, clear that cigar-smoke-filled backroom, and to send its overweight quasi-mafiosos running in search of a hiding place.

    And we will too.

The espn tour of utah was nothing more than the Urban Myer show with a little straight guy help from Coach whit. I was not happy because he talked about him(myer) not really the u. I do remember him talking about that thursday night game with california. He said it put the u in every home, everyone knew who they were because of that espn thursday night game. Kind of hurts on the thursday thing huh. Urban showed his eny of the Y by continuing his tds, very juvenile. Urban talked of the loaded cali team, I think that team went 7-5 that year. Loaded --

Don't think the show helped the u because it wasn't about the u.

Great point. Look @ how many SEC teams have won BCS titles (5... LSU, Bama, Tennessee, Florida, & Auburn).

There is parity in the balence of power in the PAC & SEC. Unlike the Big 10, where OSU, Wisconsin, & Michigan are more often than not the 3 front runners.

Only on Halloween should they show the fans in Provo in HD.

BYU games against Texas, Notre Dame, TCU, Georgia Tech, and West Virginia will indeed be on a higher level than CAL vs UCLA.

You'd better check your reading comprehesion, because The Disillusionist clearly stated that BYU's goal isn't playing in a BCS game, it's busting up the BCS, getting rid of it entirely, so that it can be replaced by a playoff tournament.

Yep Hedgie, the number one QB ranking of Heaps coming out of HS (according to "scout") was all fiction.... The offers that he turned down at USC, ND, and UW (along with about 15 others) were all baloney...

Hedge, so now Josh Weeks is going to be told by you what is or isn't in his mail box based on what you read in a couple of scouting services. Or, more like what you SAY you read. You have no credibility when you are the boy who cried wolf.
