Probably not a deserved result for RSL but I'll take it! The two away goals will
be very nice! A 1-1 draw at Rio Tinto will still see Real raise the trophy. The
biggest worry has to be that we will be without Beckerman. Gravaboy will have to
step up big next week.ole ole ole ole ole! real salt lake!
Awesome goal by Morales! RSL sitting pretty headed into the next match!
I thought RSL went too conservative too soon - but Monterrey laxed, and they
paid the price.Even though the penalty was questionable, with as
many shots as Monterrey levied, RSL will be glad to go home with a tie. I would say either Olave is the man of the match. He played the full 90
minutes and didn't give up. I can't wait until next week - glad I
got my tickets.
idsoccertodd-That result was very well deserved! We got this, I'm
not worried! GO RSL!
Wow amazing shot by morales. I was listening to post game on the
radio.Monterrey will be without their first goal scorer. Also
Monterrey is in jeopardy of falling into 2nd in the mexican table. They have a
do or die game on saturday where they will have to play their best players.
Great news for RSL.Do away goals add up? I mean if we tie 1-1 at
home we go through? or does it go to overtime?
Whew!! Awesome juke/control/goal by Morales. Lucky to have tied this game
since the second half was dominated by Monterrey. Can't wait 'til next week,
s/b rockin' at Rio Tinto.
Big Green Tractor-I wasn't meaning to bash on RSL, thought we played
tough, but in the second half Monterrey was the better side. They had nearly 60%
possession. I am very proud of our boys though. Awesome result that should see
them through as concacaf champions! Great news that Monterrey has a
rough game this weekend and RSL can rest.
Here is the breakdown with the away goals rule after this 2-2 result...0-0 And RSL takes it.1-1 And RSL takes it.2-2 And the game goes
into overtime, if that doesn't settle it then PKs.RSL outscores
Monterrey by any score and it is theirs.Monterrey outscores RSL by any
score and it is theirs.Let's just win it outright.
Monster result! If we come back to Rio Tinto and play on attack, it's off to
Go RSL!!! So pumped for next Wednesday's game. Rio Tinto will be every bit has
hostile as it was in Mexico. Monterrey are on the uphill and RSL just simply
doesn't lose at home! Kreis is a genius! I remember just a few short years ago
watching Real lose week after week. He truly has transformed this team into a
powerhouse that we can be proud of!
Guess I should expand on the details of the rules too...Didn't
mention, if it gets 3-3 or above then Monterrey wins as they will then have the
away goals advantage. Also if it goes into overtime (two extra 15
minutes halves) then away goals are wiped clean. The away goals rule only
applies to the first 90 minutes. So a 2-2 result in regular time would sent it
to overtime. Any draw result in overtime (0-0, 1-1, 2-2, etc) would take the
competition to penalty kicks. But as I said before, let's just win it
Thanks for clarifying tMoS.What an opportunity for Real Salt Lake and
Major League Soccer. If we win we represent the MLS and ESPN will have to stop
ignoring soccer besides every 4 years. By all means it is not over though. The
game did not sell out before tickets were released to the public like RSL
originally thought. There will be a mexican presence at RioT next wednesday.
It's not over!
So who replaces Beckerman next week? Jean Alexandre is the usual replacement,
but what about putting Grabavoy in that spot?Monterrey will be
pressuring from the start, so maybe Alexandre gets the nod with his tenacious
I think it's got to be Grabavoy in the center with Morales and Williams should
be on the wing from the start. Alexandre could be a good sub to use in the
second half for some fresh legs in the center of midfield. But Kreis is a genius
and will figure out exactly what to do.
"So who replaces Beckerman next week? Jean Alexandre is the usual
replacement, but what about putting Grabavoy in that spot?"Losing Beckerman is such a tough loss. We can use subs against New England,
etc, but watching the size, speed, and skill of Monterrey tonight has me worried
about the liability that Alexandre could create.I really have no
idea what the best answer is to next Wednesday. Makes me glad we have Coach
Kreis. He WILL figure out the best solution.
Lame call on Beckerman. Hand ball in the box... and a hand to the throat?Wow, some interesting calls and misses. Great game to watch and glad for
that 89th minute goal!Go RSL!
Substitute freely and run the legs off of them. They have to deal with less
oxygen at this altitude. RSL will be used to the difference after a weeks rest !
Nice job fellas. Finish it off at home.
Don't say ESPN is ignoring soccer. They're a marketing company or a for profit
company. If there's a market for soccer, they'll pick it up. I doubt they will
for some time. Especially with soccer fans mulling over and relishing this
onslaught of 1-1,2-2 ties. Yawn.
Great result! The second half may have been the one of the worse halves RSL has
ever played. Most of the second half was on Monterey's final third. Not where
you want to be playing. The hand ball was questionable- but that's what you get
when you play the game on your third of the field. You're playing with fire.Even with the bad half you have to feel good about RSL's chances at home
with 2 away goals. I felt RSL wasn't connecting with Sabario enough. Morales'
goal was fantastic.Let's do it now RSL. Go REAL!
I would think that Monterray would be used to dealing with altitude since they
play in Mexico City all the time, so I don't know how much of an advantage that
is. I think that no matter who they put in to fill Beckermans shoes will do
well, but I feel bad that the guy has to sit out in probably the biggest game of
The depth will be on display with Beckerman out. However, Monterrey will also be
tested with having 2 out for yellow card accumulation and possibly a couple of
injuries. They also have a match this weekend.
Monterrey will have a disadavantage here, due to the fact that they won't be
breathing the equivilent of 3 cigarette packs during the game.

soccer on this Tuesday, Wednesday, they'll have it on tonight, and they'll have
it on again on Saturday. As to this particular tournament, the answer
is that Fox is just a little savvier to the game and knows more about
tournaments that are under-publicized now but have a lot of potential. (They
covered the European Champions League for a decade until Fox simply outbid them
Satch I don't think it was the worse half of RSL they knew they needed to take
at least a couple of goals of advantage to have some cushion and control on
thesecond leg. They were putting a lot of pressure on our guys. They played a
great game and that makes the tie even bigger! I can't wait for next
Wednesday, will be an epic battle to win the cup! let's get it done! Go RSL!Ooleeeee ole ole oleeee REEEEAAAAAL Salt Lake!
It always bothers me when people say the results of an athletic event aren't
deserved by one team or another. How can you justify saying that? It doesn't
matter if your perception was that the other team played harder. I know it is
common for sports writers to say things like that. The bottom line is what the
scoreboard says and if one team comes out on top, they deserved to win. In this
case, Javier Morales made a spectacular move to tie up the score. How is that
not deserved? Go RSL!! Win the next one at home to put an exclamation point on
this great accomplishment!
Man I gotta start watching RSL. That was a pretty awesome goal at the end. It's
amazing that a small market team like SLC has one of the best teams in the world
The Beckerman card was pretty lame, but I thought the attack on the goalie and
the throat grab after that both deserved red cards. Goalies are supposed to be
somewhat protected after all. There was also a forearm to the back while
pretending to go for a header that should have been a yellow but wasn't (even
the Mexican announcers were surprised that one wasn't called). As for the hand
ball call, RSL had another hand ball in the box that wasn't called, so I'm fine
with the one they did call. Congrats on the result. We better
figure out how to put together a better game than we played last night or
Monterrey will run away with this one, even at Rio Tinto.
@RockOnThere is a huge market for soccer. The thing is that a lot of this
market doesn't respect the MLS. If RSL wins this tournament it would open a lot
of eyes and bring much more of the market into MLS. We know that
there is a huge market for soccer in this country because of the TV ratings of
the World Cup and the Uefa Champions league. The world cup outdid last years
NBA finals in TV ratings(in USA). My source on that is TV by the numbers if you
want to look it up for yourself.2-2 was such an amazing result for
RSL last night. still can't believe we pulled that out. I'll see
all 20,000 plus of you next wednesday.
@JoeyT@RockOnESPN does have weekly Major League Soccer and English
Premier league games. But you don't see the MLS highlights on ESPN. EPL, SPD,
and National Team highlights are all you see. If RSL goes to the club world cup
I think we would start seeing more MLS highlights on sportscenter.Great teams find a way to get it done. RSL finds a way every time. Which is
why we have made it this far and why we may be representing MLS in the CWC.
I just read on MLS soccers website that Monterrey is not worried because they
were not impressed with RSL in the 2-2 draw. They've never been to
Rio Tinto Stadium.
Draw? There aren't draws in real sports. There is always a winner.
Deltafoxtrot doesn't understand soccer. It's all about results Delta. Maybe if
you try hard you will learn to understand the point system used in soccer. In
this case maybe try googling aggregate.
@DeltaNo draws in real sports? The Eagles and Bengals tied in
'08.What exactly qualifies as a real sport in your simple mind?
Hey, I know this is late, but does someone want to explain to me how RSL was the
first MLS team in history to qualify for the semifinals, while other MLS teams
have actually won the CONCACAF championship before? Wouldn't they have had to
have gone through the semis to win the cup?
