It's happened NUMEROUS times in my lifetime. We had a government shutdown EVERY
YEAR in the Carter Administration. I remember at least 2 during the Reagan
Administration. We had at least one during the Clinton administration. It was
a royal pain, but it wasn't the end of the world.I don't know why
people are so convinced that it would be the end of the world THIS TIME... oh yah... Obama is President. ANYBODY who doesn't agree with the
leader, or cooperate with him is a heretic, subject to being burned at the stake
or committed to a re-education camp.
We probably would have had a shutdown LAST YEAR if Congress was forced to
deliver a budget (as required in the Constitution). But Congress hasn't
delivered a budget since 2009! Many say they didn't deliver a budget to the
President in 2010 because Democrats (who were the SUPER_Majority then) were
concerned it would expose them in an election year... and cost them seats in
Congress (Hint... even though the Media let them get away with it... and says
NOTHING about it... they STILL lost 80 something seats in Congress)! Now that enough people in Congress want to follow the Constitution and deliver
a budget to the President to be signed or veto it... maybe we Americans will
know where we stand. These weekly-extensions of the no-budget budget
have to stop soon. Even IF it means we have to shutdown NON_ESSENTIAL
government functions while our representatives get serious about passing a
budget for 2011.Something serious needs to be done. If it's a
government shutdown... so be it. But they need to pass a budget or have
No, the sky isn't falling. Obama will make sure, however, that it is as painful
as possible. No paychecks for our military personnel? I'm guessing the phony
baloney employees in federal government will be getting their checks. It will be a paid vacation for those who don't have to show up for work but
will get paid as if they did later.
The President and the Congress are considered "essential personnel"
you have got to be kidding me. If there are 537 people that should be cut it
should be the Congress (535) and the President and Vice President (2).
Politicians are about as non essential as they come.
The article stated that DHS and EPA were essential "services".
Whaaaat?? We don't need permits from the EPA, they are the ones that need to
SELL us permits for their enrichment. DHS is simply the "American
Gestapo" that claims that law abiding Americans are the real terrorists. We
need this? I think not! We need to get rid of these unconstitutional and
abusive agencies and dozens more like them, TSA, FDA, BATF, IRS, etc, etc. The
govt has become a self-multiplying and self-perpetuating monstrosity. Let it
If the Military doesn't get paid, then the President, all his aides, Senators,
Congressmen, Supreme Court, anything Federal should not be paid, either.
Planned Parenthood funding is not essential, either. I definitely agree with JNA
at 5:40pm. All of the acronyms (IRS, etc. etc.) have outgrown themselves and
could be run much more efficiently. The Federal Government has become an
unwieldy and cumbersome entity.
Libertarian:I'm with you, brother. Let's shut down the FAA, send
the air traffic controllers on vacation! Yeah, maybe there would be a collision
or two, but people have to realize life has risks. Like Rand Paul said last
year about the coal mine disaster that killed all those miners, "people
just need to understand that sometimes accidents happen". It's certainly
no reason to have safety regulations. Nuclear Regulatory
Commission? Those guys just get in the way of good old businessness men who
could give us all the electricity we would ever want for $10 a month. Get rid
of the NRC! We'll never have an earthquake here like they had in Japan, the NRC
is just trying to destroy our economy.Wouldn't it be great if the
EPA was eliminated? A lot of businesses would make more money, no pesky clean
air regulations to follow. We could start using unleaded gasoline again! (That
was the first assault against freedom, in the early 70s. There is no air
pollution, it's enviro-wacko mythology.)Anything I missed?
Oh, oh..........In the photo, the Speaker appears that he is about
to cry. Wonder if they are tears of joy, or tears of frustration?
Is this an opinion piece? Down playing the shutdown? Appalling. The paper
must be a mouthpiece for the GOP.
Re: Esquire | 7:45 p.m. April 6, 2011I didn't hear the liberals
complaining when the Democratic legislators in Wisconsin fled the state and thus
holding their budget hostage.Just how serious are Obama and the
Democrats when it comes to not only putting a cap on our debt but actually
paying it off?Think how much more money we could put into education
if we weren't paying staggering interest on our obscene national debt.
This happens too often and we survive.
Shut 'er down. Start by: bringing the troops home, closing the 200 some odd
bases all over the world - OK - all of them, shut down the Dept. of Education. I
could keep going. You could add your own list as well. Shut 'em down. This
logjam shows us really how much the Democrats and Republicans really are the
same party. What, they're arguing over the difference of $30B and $60B? (I know
not the exact number, keep with me) Are you kidding me? We need to be arguing
over the difference between $500B and $1T.
I vote we shut down the government and start over.
Some of these comments illustrate how broken our political process is. How about
a thoughtful discussion, instead of ranting? No, it won't be the end
of the world. However, it will affect people and possibly the economy.
Interesting that Congress still gets paid when the government shuts down.
We have to remember now that Obama is the Master and Chief of the Military of
the US and he has plenty of time to start and incite these riotous reports to
create and aura of fear among military ranks. It is all an Obama lie, the
regular army does have stop gaps in place that insures its military personnel do
get paid unless Obama has interfered in that already present law.Obama is reaching across the country behind all the legal channels and
inciting and reporting false information through his network of government
controlled news media. Most government workers already know this and retroactive
pay is paid if they are an essential service for government to operate. Those
who have saved leave will still get paid on those terms so what is being
portrayed as an economic disaster is only in the eyes of the spend thrift
democrats. We have got to have a budget and if the Democrats choose
not to comply then it is on their heads that the economy now and in the future
is at stake.
If there is a shutdown, it WILL affect the economy of this state. Or have you
all forgotten that HAFB is the largest employer in the state? And Rifleman:
Those of us who work at HAFB do not think you are funny...We lose about 50% of
our income before we even get paid due to taxes, SS, insurance...The average
wage at Hill is around 50,000. NOT the extravagant wages of our Congress,
10CC | 6:09 p.m.Nobody's suggesting shutting down FAA or ANY
essential services.Quit being so over-dramatic.... it's people like
you... with your mis-representations of what's actually going on that makes SOME
people think it would actually be the END of the world... if these NON-Essential
services were shutdown temporarily while we decide how/IF we are going to fund
them.===It's NOT the end-of-the-world. They AREN'T
going to shutdown the FAA or send the air traffic controllers on vacation!===The NRC is also already on the list of agencies that
would be completely unaffected by the shutdown.===Please
get informed, the list of agencies that are (and have been for years) on the
list of agencies that would NOT shutdown is out there for all to read. The FAA
and NRC are on it. So you don't have to worry... or get OTHERS
worried about this red-herring.Oh... the EPA is also on the list.Did you MISS anything??? Did you HIT anything... would be the better
question!ZERO_OF_THE_THREE you mentioned are even on the list of
agencies affected by government shutdowns!
'Government shutdown will have an impact, but it's not the end of the world' -
Title So, even admited in the title, a shutdown WILL do
something... but it 'wont' be that bad.' I don't think
the DSNews is a mouthpeice for the GOP. But it does contradict
itself. *'Memories of 1995 haunt GOP as shutdown talk grows' - By
Charles Babington - AP - Published by DSNews - 02/20/11 WASHINGTON
Few memories haunt Republicans more deeply than the 1995-96 partial shutdown of
the federal government, which helped President Bill Clinton reverse his falling
fortunes and recast House Republicans as stubborn partisans, not savvy
insurgents. What do yu think will happen when the goverment shuts
down? People will ask 'who is responsible?' And, who voted
against.... Medicare Unemployment Insurance for 9/11 1st
responders Unions Healthcare Lunches for needy children
Tax cuts for the middle class Serving in the military Transparency
(HB477) The Republican party.
@Pagan, yeah, you're probably right...we should continue to fund every piece of
legislation that some congressperson feels like putting out there. Makes me
wonder how we ever accomplished anything in this country without federal funding
for it. You want to be all things to all people at any cost--I say that is not
the government's role. This is the great division. It's not about if NPR
should be federally funded specifically. Sure, lunches for needy children is
probably a great program--but is it the federal government's responsibility.
No. This government has grown too large, employs too many, costs
too much to operate efficiently, and is too self-interested to serve WE THE
PEOPLE who give this government its power.
Democrats had their chance to pass a budget which actually was due long before
the November elections and refused to do it! Now they blame the Republicans for
not getting one passed? They've been practicing their spin on this for several
weeks to blame the GOP so of course they aren't in any hurry to get this passed!
The House has already passed a budget- the problem is Harry Reid and the
Democrat controlled Senate. And the proposed cuts aren't really actual cuts in
spending- they are just just to the proposed INCREASES of spending. Another
good reason for enacting term limits for Washington DC- so they could actually
go in and do the work of the people instead of being beholden to special
interest groups! The cuts need to be made- we can't keep spending money that we
As has been often reported in the press, the Obama administration lives and
breathes with making hay over media-stirred disasters. This is another example
of nothing being flamed by the press - kind of like last years ecological
disaster of the century in the Gulf....the only disaster to come of it is
Obama's moratorium on drilling, killing lots of jobs, a direct attack on our
national security, leases and loans to the Chinese, Cubans and Brazilians to
drill anyway, and Chairman O's determination to take us back to the stone age
with the strangling of the energy industry. And, personnel in the
military unit I am embedded with in Afghanistan have been informed by DFAS,
their pay branch, to expect half pay on the 15th, due to the Democrats refusal
to make serious cuts in working towards a budget. The GOP has already halved
their budget cutting proposals, but the Dems still sit there, with a few old hat
GOP types sitting on their hands.
