A preemptive post for the Ute trolls:You are closer to losing
Clyburn than snagging Rose. If he's not interested in a team that is in the
upper echelon in the BIG 12, he's probably not interested in the trainwreck on
the hill, and being a perennial bottom feeder in the PAC 10.2
If he isn't interested in the OU job, why would he be interest in the U vacancy?
I hope the Y can keep him around. Just look at his record. The guy's a really
good coach. Rose is turning out to be the "Jimmer" of coaching with a
winning percentage like that.
I hope they pay him what he is worth. Most of because he is a coach with ethics
and that is over half the battle in college.
A great decesion by BYU to up the stakes with the hopes of retaining Coach Rose.
Well Duh! He can't coach Utah and Oklahoma. You'll lookg great in
red coach ROSE.
Thanks for all your hard work coach Rose! This BYU fan hopes to see you back
Good for coach Rose he has earned a health pay increase for his performance the
last 6 years. He is a good coach and a great recruiter, with a 750 winning
percentage that is impressive. He has improved the cougar basketball program
from where it was under Reid and Cleveland. Next year without Jimmer and
Jackson he will need all of his coaching experiance to get back to 25 wins.
What about Chris B, Hedgehog and Otis taking that job at Oklahoma?Good luck kids. You know basketball better than anyone else. They have to be
begging for you kids!!! Take the JOB!!!!
Honestly, why would he stay? The athletic department has made there choice and
it was, of course, football. Rose just lost the best offensive and defensive
players in school history and he could not get past the sweet 16 at BYU. Before
anyone replies "he would have if he had Davies", that only proves my
point. He can shine even brighter at a job with less obsticles. This is his high
water mark, he needs to leverage it. Even if Rose has a great year (which is
unlikely with next years team), in the wcc it is a 1 bid (maybe 2 bid)league
with a double didgit seed. He should move on and I wish him well.
It was probably Rose's only chance to coach in the Big 12. The y will never be
invited to the conference.
I guess you're right about rose...winning (when it counts) is only
the 5th most important thing in the bubble.
@gone fishing:"Even if Rose has a great year (which is unlikely
with next years team),"That's just it. Matt Carlino, Demarcus
Harrison will be incoming next year. BYU will be reloading, not rummaging
through a trainwreck looking for answers. Brace yourself, but we
actually have kids coming IN to the program as opposed to LEAVING, like U do.Utah may only lose one player this year due to transfers. Congrats!
Well, if he can get a similar amount of money from BYU, and he's from utah, and
his family is here, and he's already built a great program why would he leave?
However, I would be shocked if Dave Rice isn't a head coach next fall.
"It was probably Rose's only chance to coach in the Big 12. The y will
never be invited to the conference."I agree. Holmoe would have
been smart to push Rose to the Big12. The Y didn't help themselves in there
secret "quest" to be invited into the Big12.
crisb; take off your red glasses and...yup, this Rose is still blue and the
garden is full of talent for the forseeable future. No trolling
intended with this: I was listening to 1320 this morning on the way to work.
They were debating on how attractive the Utah head coach position was. They
concluded that it was only moderately attractive for various reasons and doubted
Utah would be able to pull anyone of consequence(good experienced HC) into the
current scenario. I hope Chris Hill has a little magic and can pull off a big
coup. There are several other more attractive head coach openings at this time
who will be looking at the same pool of candidates. Utah is going to have to
roll the dice on a young assistant coach. There are some good ones. If Rice
decides to leave BYU, I sincerely hope he goes to Utah. It would make the whole
state of Utah look better if Utah is successful in the PAC.
Big Blue: It's cute that you kids want a rival so you look to direct your
hatred at BYU. You'll continue to be thought of as the annoying neighbor kid
who will always be a few steps behind. Yes, you beat byu in football last year
congrats. And I'm sure you win again sometime in the next 10 years. You must
be so proud.P.S. The NCAA selection committee just announced you'll
be another #12 seed next year.
@Hedgehog:And even with winning as the 5th priority we have still
managed to rack up more wins this year than U have the last 2 put together, and
beat you 9 of 10 times.
So pathetic. BYU does a good job securing Rose as their coach, yet 2 jealous
Cougar fans first to post can only think about Utah? How's that Little Brother
complex going?Paranoia is getting a little ridiculous down south.
To Flatlander: In your opinion what is Rose worth?
Another "soul crushing" revelation that accelerates the ever spiraling
hedgehog down to the abyss of irrelevance! Coach Rose ain't leavin'
"So pathetic. BYU does a good job securing Rose as their coach, yet 2
jealous Cougar fans first to post can only think about Utah? How's that Little
Brother complex going...says the troll whose constant insecurity and
obsession drives her to every BYU article.
Seems like a lot of smack (and paranioa) going on. Great coaches need great
players...BYU (and coach Rose) had a terrific year...but maintaining what
2010-2011 had will be hard. I've already said Utah has a tough
challenge...but, BYU does not have to look that far back to where they were
where we are...and I truly believe that Utah will be back. Coach
Rose will make his own decision and staying at BYU, where he is loved, he is
comfortable and where he will be paid OK...is not a bad decision.
Coach Rose, you just made my day. Thank you for sticking around. You are beloved
here and always will be. Time to rest, and the reload with new arsenal...here's
to another great year with new people.
@ williary:You're posting on a BYU article because ...?
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Chris B, you actually think Rose would
sacrifice his entire career to take over the ridiculous train wreck of a program
on the hill? That is the best prediction you have made yet. Besides, coach Rose
doesn't wear one of those hilariously bushy 80's goatees--isn't that part of the
dress code at the U?
Rose needs to stay here...we are just beginning a long run.It smells
like Roses in Provo!BYU is going to be good for at least 5 more
years (maybe beyond). This program is in excellent condition. With Rose and
Rice...BYU is college hoops power.
I'm tired of seeing mid-major coaches get poached by the big league schools (yes
I'm aware that my Utes are technically that now and that that's probably where
we're going to get our coach from). I hope he stays at BYU.
Nostradamus"BYU does not have to look that far back to where
they were where we are..."Actually, BYU has to look back to the
late WAC era to find a time when BYU was where you are. During the MWC era, BYU
had one brief dip just before Cleveland left, and Rose, who was his assistant,

say it ain't so.
Proof that there are more important things than money. I'm sure Rose would have
received 50% more from OU than the new offer that's coming from the Y. Here's why he'll stay (hopefully): Next years pipeline includes
Matt Carlino, Anson Winder, and DaMarcus Harrison, the return of C.
Collinsworth; along with Ian Harward and Nate Austin (Redshirt candidates)and
HOPEFULLY the return of Davies.2012 pipeline includes Tyler Haws,
and hopefully Chatman and LoveridgeFuture pipeline includes K.
Collinsworth, Nielsen, and hopefully TJ Haws and Nick Emery.
Everyone know that Rose was going to use his leverage of another team to get BYU
a raise. Good for him I am excited that BYU is willing to give him a raise. Here how it went downDr. Hill asked Rose if he would
interview with Utah.Rose - Tom Holmoe I think I want to stay but Utah

Dave we love you and we want to put a package to make sure you are here for a
long time. Rose - Announces to Oklahoma that he is not interested in
interviewing with them.
royal blueFair enough - but I am likely much older than you (hate to
admit it) - so, how far one has to look back is relative.Good stats
though...the point is still relevant...sports are cyclical and it's really tough
to stay on top. Kansas, Pittsburgh, Duke...you get the point. But
again, thanks for sharing some relevant knowledge!
Dave Rose Arena - Home of the Cougars
I am a proud U of U alum, who has nothing but HATE for BYU. But Dave
Rose is a pimp coach. That is undeniable. He is gonna have them rollin the WCC
off the bat. Jenifer Rockwood = 2nd best coach on that campus. Her
squad will also be boss in the WCC.
Rose isn't coming to the U! Rose isn't coming to the U! Don't even say it! He
isn't, he isn't, he isn't!Sincerely,BYU Troll Paranoia
Wait, the U is getting ready to sign another washed up assistant coach from the
NBA. He was 2 games above .500 as a college coach, so maybe he can keep that
type of record and that would be an improvement up on the hill. Why not go after
someone that has done something this decade? Maybe Fisher at SDSU? This guy is
Jim 2.0. Not impressed at all. I thought that the Pac 12 would allow the hiring
of a top notch, or at least an upper echelon mid-major coach to come to the U.
Maybe I'm wrong, but C. Hill has bombed two in a row.
If you ever attended and graduated from the Y, as I did, it is a unique
experience and one which would make one realize it is a great place to be and to
work. When people are interviewed about there job and what makes them happy,
money is on the list, but down aways. There are other factors which give people
true happiness at work. Coach realizes this and is comfortable staying. I hope
they can truly compensate him for his efforts.
Onr more reason to celebrate the Mtn in the rear view mirror: more money to pay
the best coaches what they are worth!
Seattle U...how has Cameron Dollar been for your school? I think he is a
talent...he helped recruit Robinson & Roy to UW...and the inside story is
that he really brought D1 defense and rebounds to the Huskies...I
kind of hoped the U would interview Dollar Bill??? Has Seattle U improved since
his arrival? Or not so much...
Hey guys, if the Utah job was completely off the table for Rose, wouldn't he
come out and say so like he has about the Oklahoma job? The silence
from both Rose and Hill are fascinating. Why are they waiting to dispel the
rumors if there is nothing to them?
utesovertideYou are assuming (because Hedgehog who is in Michigan
says so) that an offer has indeed been made. Maybe it hasn't.
I doubt Rose leaves BYU. Rice probably will, but he earned it (too bad for us
though, he's been great).Rose wants to live here in Utah, that is
why the OK job was not of interest. However, he could still move up to the U
(better pay, no restrictions, family stays put). I doubt he will though.
re utesovertideThe reason he will not got to Utah is that it is not
an upward move. Let me repeat it is not a lateral move and it is not an upward
move. If he refuses Oklahoma there is no chance he will go to Utah. The reason
nobody is saying anything is because it is obvious. Let me dispel the rumors
for you. Dave Rose will never coach at Utah even when the job is open again in
2013, 2016, 2019, and 2022.
Without a coach, who will the utes get next year? Doesn't look like their new
sports building is doing much for recruiting.
I agree! The silence is ominous!!! BYU bball was thrown under the bus with this
WCC thing. You're dreamin if you think that the WCC is a better place to be
then the Mountain. Holomoe threw bball under the bus in a knee-jerk reaction to
the utes move to the PAC-12. I mean you could throw bball under the bus if you
knew this whole independence thing was gonna pan out but it's a dark tunnel and
nobody knows whats on the other side. That would make me mad. But I think it's
premature to declare that Rose won't leave BYU cause it's 'special' or whatever.
Rose can be a light to his players anywhere. Not just at BYU. But
I would say that if he turned down Oklahoma then his choices are stay at the Y
or head to the hill. And the cupboard is not bare there despite what you may
think. I watched good athletes be part of a crappy system. Just imagine good
athletes in a good system.
People, you are not answering my question. I am not interested in whether Rose
will/will not go to the U. I want to know why he hasn't come out
and said he's not going, like he did with the Oklahoma job. It would be that
easy to end all of the speculation and let us move on to other coaching names.
@utesovertide:I think Bradley, Towson, Kennesaw State, and Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi are all looking for coaches too, and I haven't seen Dave
Rose come out and say he isn't interested in any of those jobs either. Imagine
that. Maybe he's really considering taking Tony Ingle's place at Kennesaw State.
Hey coug fans-I would not trash on the U job. Even if the next coach is a bust,
someone, sometime will come in and resucitate it and be the next Urban Meyer of
basketball. It will happen. It is the PAC-12. No reason to get jealous. I
wish them the best and only hope they lose when they play the Cougs and my AZ
schools. I wish the U were better. it would raise BYU's RPI. As
for Rose going to the U, I would not blame him if he does. No question on the
WCC vs. PAC. PAC is a superior conference. BYU will be on ESPN more, but that
is the only benefit of going to an inferior conference. I hope Rose
stays with the Cougs and he gets a nice fat raise along with all his assistants
all the way down to the film coordinators. About the silence between Rose and
Hill, has he even been contacted for the position? Is there anything to comment
on?Over the long term, the best thing that could keep Rose in Cougar
blue is to fill the Marriott Center year in and year out.
All I can say is....Yahoo!!!!!!
@cynicHaha, nice try, but you're calling all fruits apples. The difference between the Utah job and those in your list is that there
has actually been talk of him leaving for Utah. And not just here on the
boards, but in all the local sports TV, radio, and print. We all know
how the press is, and I'm sure they've been asking and prodding but have not
gotten an answer or official press release. The question remains, why not?
AZguyThe flaw in your argument about the PAC 12 being better than
the WCC is that Utah isn't better than BYU.And in basketball, as
we've in the NCAA tournament this year, conference affiliation doesn't mean
squat as far as how successful you can be in the tournament.BYU
being on ESPN/BYUtv is better than being on the MTN.
Rose is a good coach for BYU, but let's not forget SDSU's Fisher beat him
soundly when it really counted...just sayin
@indy crimson:SeattleUhasabasketballteam? is a moniker to poke fun
at the utes. Ive lived in seattle for 5 years and had no idea that seattleu had
a bball team till the utes lost to them 2 years ago.
LivinLarge"Rose is a good coach for BYU, but let's not forget
SDSU's Fisher beat him soundly when it really counted..."You're
sadly mistaken. Except for automatic bids for one-bid conferences,
the regular season championship is much more important to the selection
committee than the conference tournament, and in the regular season, BYU swept
the Aztecs in back-to-back seasons.
Hey, these are supposed to be replies about Dave Rose and BYU. We love him; we
want him to stay; and it speaks well of our school, our fans, the players, et.
al that he will stay put. Please leave the U out of the discussion.
This is about BYU. Why do these seemingly straight forward BYU articles always
end up being a debate between opposing points of view? It gets rather sickening
on a regular basis! I do not go to any Utah articles that are printed. Simply
not interested. Not in a negative way necessarily, just not interested! You go
your way, and we'll go ours. Please do not feed the negative and stay positive
and on your own turf.Go Cougars!
All true Cougars love Coach Rose--but so do a lot of others. Please stay!!
The reality is simple. The BYU TV coverage is better in the WCC than in it is
for Utah in the PAC12. The WCC is ESPN and BYU has it own station.
The PAC is Fox Sports. I saw an article a few days ago indicating that in CA
the WCC (ESPN) actually had better coverage than the PAC. BYU will
have good coverage in CA and vastly better coverage nationally/internationally.
BYU will play in a weaker conference. But the WCC has no gate
receipt sharing. BYU keeps all of its home gate and gets MUCH better TV
money.BYU can also play more GOOD non conference teams. Utah won't
because they will get clocked in the PAC and can't afford the non conference
losses. Rose has a great team shaping up for next year. All he needs
is the right PG. He can build national contender much easier at BYU than he can
at Utah. The Utah coaching positions is high risk. It will take a
coach who does not have the ideal situation to decide they want the Utah
position. OU is having trouble finding a coach. Utah is a worse situation than
Byu alum, its got alot to do with utah. utah has a coaching vacancy and theres
speculation about rose filling it. i think you'll put two and two together.
Utah could do a lot worse than Coach Rice. No way they get Coach Rose.I hope they are both back in Provo at the start of next season but I'd be
surprised if Coach Rice didn't get a shot somewhere.
OU was paying $1.5 mill per year plus bonuses and side deals to their basketball
coach. The U has been paying $575,000 base. I am not sure how much
the U will offer a new coach. But I doubt if it is much more than they gave
Boylen. The top basketball coaches get 2-4 mill a year base. However, Whittingham only makes about $700,000 base. He is going to be
the 2nd lowest paid football coach in the PAC. That aught to help the U compete
in the PAC?The elite football coaches make 3 to 4.5 mill a year
base, plus bonuses and side deals. Side deals are usually worth more than
base.BYU tends to pay on an average of the schools they compete
with. In football that just improved dramatically as they now compete
nationally. The same standard should apply to Rose as the WCC is just a parking
place for the basketball team which is now actually national. Some of
the new BYU TV money should go to the coaches and assistants. They should get a
percentage of the TV revenues and gate for bonuses.
Even poor old broke, little, chinsy Idaho (BSU) pays Peterson $900,000 a year
base. TCU paid Patterson $1.65 mill in 2008. You can bet it is a lot
more now. BYU needs to step up if they want to play with the big boys. Utah? If Utah thinks they really want to compete in the PAC then they are
going to have to spend some money on coaches.
U of MO offered Anderson 14 Mill for 7 years to stay and is offering Painter
(Purdue) a similar deal. U of Arkansas paid 2.2 mill for Anderson. The above posts put the U of U position in perspective. It is not that
attractive compared to other state schools and is way underpaid compared to
other PAC/Big 12/SEC schools.BYU is a different animal as the
coaches leave a lot of money on the table due to Church loyalty. However, BYU
needs to step up and pay their coaches for performing. A bonus system would
probably be best. BYU needs to put the comparison with the MTN
schools behind it and realize it is now a national/international University
(competes nationally) and act like one. BYU has good coaches. They
need to be treated more fairly. 14 mill gives a lot of financial security. There should never be a question of BYU losing a coach to the U for any
reason given the new TV arrangement.
Bradley paid $700,000 plus incentives for their new coach. That is more than the
U paid Boylen. Is Bradley a better situation than the U?
I think it is interesting that Utah fans love to express 'hatred' for BYU, its
fans, and its administration, however, they have no problem hiring BYU coaches
and graduates as their:a) School Presidentb) Head football coachc) Basketball coach.Really, who are we kidding, BYU and Utah are
tied at the hip. We are rivals in sports, but we tend to help each other out and
most of us cheer for each other's success.I hope Utah has success in
the Pac-12, but I hope BYU beats them every time for ever more.
I keep hearing from the Utah fans that the WCC is an
"inferior"conference, but I seem to remember that the "Runnin'
Redskins" couldn't even beat two of the worst teams in that conference.
How many times in the next ten years do you think Utah would beat the two best
teams in that league, BYU and Gonzaga? Do you really think that Dave Rose
wasn't a part of the decision to play basketball in the WCC? And don't you think
he's looking forward to that new opportunity? The PAC10 was generously given
three NCAA tournament bids this year and Arizona, a team that BYU thrashed on a
neutral court, did have agood run, but the PAC10 right now isn't that big a step
up from the MWC in basketball. Good luck, Utah, with that coach thing, but Rose
is staying at BYU.
To In Arizona, I think he should get $500,000 from the university and then get
the standard shoe and radio contracts that would put him in the $750,000 range.
By side deals I am not talking piddly shoe and radio contracts. When
Holtz was at U of AR he had side deals with Tysons. They created limited
partnerships with him on hog and chicken contracts that were fail proof money
making machines. Since Tyson was buying the hogs and chickens they could price
everything so it was impossible to for Holtz to lose money but he could get lots
of write offs. When Tysons wanted Holtz to resign they simply pulled
the side deals and he moved to MN and then ND. U of AR did not have to
"Fire" Holtz. He left because Tysons pulled the money on the side
deals. Do you think Anderson went to U of AR from UM for %200,000
(10%) more in salary? The big time schools boosters know how to pay
coaches beyond the University payroll and visible media/shoe deals. Since the U fired Boylen I am assuming the U boosters do not have side
business deals.I do not know about BYU policy on side deals for the
coaches but in theory BYU boosters could create business side deals for key
Rose just turned down $1.8 mill plus side deals by saying he was not interested
in the OU job. The OU boosters own a few oil wells and know how to do side
deals. $1.8 plus oil wells is a lot more than U of U can or will
offer any coach. Rose is staying at BYU due to loyalty to the Church. He should
get a raise. On the open market both he and Mendenhall are worth a couple of
mill a year plus booster support. AS for the U good luck on low
balling a great coach. Step up and compete with U of AR and OU and see what you
get?If Whit competes well in the PAC, UCLA or some serious
University will offer him 3-4 times the money the U will pay him and he will be
gone. You need deep pockets to play in the PAC.
Glad to hear coach Rose turned down OU.He had done an incredible job
and the team is already reloading. He is going to have a long run at BYU with
much success. At work we are having a contest. You have to
predict how many coaches from the WCC will turn down the utah head coaching job
in the mighty Pac 10.2.My prediction is 4."But
wait", my ute fans say. "It is the mighty Pac 10.2. Everyone will
want to come coach for us. We can borrow money from future tv revenues to hire
them. It is the big time!" I then ask them where I can catch some of
these mighty Pac 10.2 games on t.v. None of them know. I ask "ESPN?"
Nope. "ABC?" Nope. One guy finally told me I can catch them on the
fox regional channel if I have it.Great to be a Cougar!
It would be interesting if a large percentage of the financial benefits to Utah
and BYU from their new conference affiliations (or independence) ended up being
paid to top-tier head and assistant coaches who are needed in order to compete
on the bigger stages these two schools now play on. Maybe the financial gains
won't be quite as large as advertised once those (and other) new costs are taken
cactusflatsAs any successful business knows, the bottom line isn't
determined by how much you spend, but by how much you make in relationship to
how much you spend.Competing at the highest level will require
investing in coaches who are paid within a reasonable range of other top-tier
Darn! I would have loved to have him here in Norman. OU would have benefited
from this great coach.
Bugoff... great research on the salaries. Enjoyed it very much. It's very
obvious that the Utes are going to have to spend more in the future to compete
in the PAC-10.2, that only stands to reason. It's hard for some
people to realize that money isn't everything when it comes to these coaching
positions. Many people do not understand the 'culture' and atmosphere of BYU
(yes, we also enjoy clean mountain air at 4300') and find it difficult that
anyone would stay there if more money was available somewhere else.I
have several friends that work at BYU and BYU-Idaho, all of them could make more
money elsewhere but choose to stay because of... well, you know what I mean.Coach Rose will stay because... it ain't about the money.
Ok, so this will likely just open the door for some negative comments, but would
be worth it if someone responds accordingly. For those truly
interested in seeing Coach Rose stay, and the continued success of BYU sports,
you could consider the depth of your loyalty and explore various direct means to
put your money where your postings proclaim your heart to be. Editors - still too "commercial" to be posted?
@utesovertideThe only "actual talk" I have ever seen about
Rose considering the utah job was from ute trolls on these boards or talk radio
hosts trying to stir up controversy and generate phone calls. In otherwords
nothing reliable has ever been printed or reported stating that chris hill and
Dave Rose ever even spoke. But let's pretend they did. Based on
officials I know at both schools none of them have any desire to show up or
embarrass the other. Chris Hill and Tom Holmoe actually like each other as do
Whittingham and Mendenhall and dave Rose and the utah officials. They have alot
of common interests that they support each other on and trying to make the other
look bad is not something they wish to do.If Hill did contact Rose
my guess is that Rose simply told him he wasn't interested and that was the end
of it. He didn't go to the press to annouce he spurned an offer and Hill
wouldn't go and announce he was turned down. That is how people of class handle
things. No press release and no one upmanship.
Chris Hill and ute fans' hubris in thinking Rose would be interested in Utah is
stunning. Talk about being provincial.
1Infidel"For those truly interested in seeing Coach Rose
stay, and the continued success of BYU sports, you could consider the depth of
your loyalty and explore various direct means to put your money where your
postings proclaim your heart to be."Did you even bother reading
the article before commenting?BYU is already doing that:"Meanwhile, BYU is preparing to offer Rose a new contract that is
expected to increase his salary SIGNIFICANTLY."
I like Larry K. Good fit for Utah. Rose is a great coach. Glad he is at BYU.
Help me out here, What is the deal with Clyburn and Utah?
alternateClyburn announced that he is waiting to see who the new
Utah head coach is going to be, before he decides whether to stay at Utah or
Look, this is a great coach. He loves to coach. I am a BYU fan. We have played
them. They have beat us and we have beat them. Tell me Y fans: Have we ever
thought we were better than the rankings and still barely beat or lose to Utah?
Utah is not a bottom feeder in the PAC12. They will be middle of the road or
better. They were good while we played them. Why will that change. We beat PAC10
teams. Are they now all of the sudden a super human conference?
haggie"Look, this is a great coach."Who's a
great coach. The article is about Dave Rose. I don't think you'll get any
arguments from BYU fans that Rose is a great coach."Utah is not
a bottom feeder in the PAC12."In basketball, Utah may very well
be a bottom feeder in the PAC 12.BYU, on the other hand, beat PAC 10
champion Arizona by 22 points.
Actually it is the PAC 10.1.1Colorado (.1) is a red headed step
child and utah's new arch rival.
OK...after all the commentary on this, clearly, BYU is superior in all ways to
Utah and every other school in the nation. Religious loyalty is way better than
compensation...in fact, Rose and Bronco should pay to be the coach...it's that
good of a job. BYU will always be better. In fact, the U should give up now.
What a fool I am to be a Utah fan...we can't pay our coaches enough,
no one will play for us, we will be the bottom feeder of the PAC, we can't
educate our leaders (only import them from the Great University Down South - now
only to be referred to as the GUDS)...heck I guess even blue is superior to red
in the color spectrum!I am now straightened out...go GUDS!
Bugoff, I'm a Cougar fan, but personally, I don't think Mendenhall's act would
play anywhere else. WAY too verbosely grandiloquent, too LDS churchy for any
school in the south, too preachy, too prideful and too "I'm smarter than
you" for the same type of boosters you said would pay side deals. T. Boone
Pickens at Oklahoma State wouldn't put up with Mendenhall for the time it takes
to turn the tap on one of his many, many wells, and Mendenhall would think he
was too smart and too good for those same boosters.
NostradamusInstead of trolling BYU blogs, why don't you get your
MUSS buddies together on a Utah blog.Frankly, the Ute trolls brought
this Cougar fan retaliation on themselves with their PAC 12 snobbery; acting
like Utah's PAC 12 invite was some sort of golden ticket to instant
"elite" status.Sorry to disappoint you, but it doesn't
work that way. There are lots of very mediocre teams in the big boy conferences.
Win a PAC 12 championship, then U can talk.
Would the OU boosters allow a Mormon to coach the Sooners?
B"Would the OU boosters allow a Mormon to coach the
Sooners?"Since Dave Rose turned down a $1.7 million offer from
Oklahoma, that's a pretty good sign that they would. Even very
liberal, very anti-Mormon California, had a Mormon head football coach.
@skywalkerMy point exactly. Where other schools have active
boosters contributing directly to their beloved sports programs, and all the
"extras" others here have already written about, BYU fans typically
sit back and expect the school to serve it all up, including being able to
compete with coaches and their staffs competitive salaries.Robbie
Bosco moving to fund raising wasn't a role where he is going to sit by the
turnstiles and personally thank attendees. There is a lot more to keeping a
flagship sports program going, and sitting back and assuming someone else is
going to take care of it is not going to get it done. Penny ante is
not the way to go.
@In My Humble Opinion Mendenhall would adapt to the culture of the
new school. I knew Mendenhall when he coached at Tech and his off turf demeanor
was very different than at BYU. He is fully capable of working in a not church
school environment. He prefers to be at BYU.Besides Mendenhall has
openly said coaching at BYU IS A MISSION and he is treating it as such. I
suspect most of the LDS Coaches share that world view to some extent. Which also
explains why they don't go elsewhere for more money. I have
relatives who are Sooners. The Sooners would embrace anyone who beat KS and TX
and won the Big 12 championship for them.
BWould the OU boosters allow a Mormon to coach? You better believe
it. Anything to win games...even hiring a Mormon. They know more than most the
power of BYU. They know of the football teams success and they know of our bball
teams record. Trust me, they are a sports loving state and would do
anything to bring back some winning ways to the OU basketball program.
@1InfedelThe BYU indoor practice facility and Football/sports center
were both built completely with donor donations. The indoor practice facility
cost around 60million and the football center cost abnother 20million. Seeing as
though it was a decade ago they were built you could probably inflate that by
another 20% in todays dollars. Also BYU's current athletic budget is
42-43 million per year. That is around 50% more than utahs by the way, and much
of it comes from donors. BYU's coaches are paid from a fund set up by boosters
where they all donated to set up a trust that generates the coaches salaries. Also as reported in this news paper in just the last few weeks BYU's
athletic department actually runs in the black, they make money, and it was
reported they profited around 5 million above expenses last year. In
otherwords your post was pretty much all wrong.
1InfidelObviously you don't know much about BYU funding of
athletics. About half of all BYU athletic scholarships are already endowed
through BYU fan contributions. There's already a group of deep-pocketed BYU fans
who set up a fund to help pay BYU coaches market value for their services.
Guaranteed, a significant portion of Coach Rose's significant pay increase will
be becoming from that fund. This is no different than happens at most
major programs. Do you really think the average joebob Texas fan is contributing
is helping pay for top coaches. No, just as at BYU, it's the deep-pocketed
boosters who are making those contributions. The mechanism through
which BYU operates may be different than at other major programs, but it all
works out the same.
To all the BYU fans who refuse to acknowledge that Chris Hill may have actually
met with Coach Rose,The following is a quote from a local media
outlet all BYU fans should be familiar with: "BYU head coach
Dave Rose - a source close to the basketball program has confirmed that Utah
athletics director Chris Hill and Rose have met twice, but whether that was to
discuss his potential interest in the job or to gain information on BYU
assistant Dave Rice remains to be seen."I hope that puts to
rest all the condescending comments about the Utah job being beneath him.
@mormon uteWhy would that put anything to rest? The job is beneath
Rose at this point. Its already been reported he turned hill down so I don't
know why it excites you so much that he met with hill. Frankly any coach with
half a brain listens to what people have to say and I am sure Rose did give hill
the courtesy of hearing him out. Bennett also turned hill down, as
did Kruger. Those are just the 3 we know about. Don't worry utah
will eventually hire a coach. D1 head coaching jobs are not that plnetiful. It
is just becoming very obvious that coaches of established programs have no
interest in leaving them to take over that train wreck. I really
think dr. hill and ute fans overestimated the appeal of that job.
Nice accolades, and why would you leave a system with Monster momentum that will
reload depth next season, smart man Rose just keep let-tin it roll on baby, roll
on. Perhaps the AD at the "Y" step's up to the plate with
Duckhunter,You didn't read what I quoted did you? That quote was
from this morning and clearly indicated Coach Rose has not said anything about a
decision regarding the Ute's job. That quote was from BYU's flagship station's
sports editor and clearly indicated nobody knows for sure what Hill and Rose
talked about, but they met twice. Also, everything I read about Bennett said he
denied ever being interviewed or contacted and Kruger has turned down a bunch of
offers from bigger names than Utah. No disgrace there. So I'll just wait until
something official is said to remove Rose from the list and he's at the top
Big Hapa,Don't count on it. Unless BYU has decided to break from
tradition, Rose will continue to make 1/3 or 1/2 of what he could make
elsewhere, if he stays at BYU. I'm not saying money is everything. I just
think he can have a lot of what he has at BYU and more money too at the U.
Rose always looks great in white with a shade of blue.
@mormon uteIt was reported on the radio today that hill offered Rose
between 1.2 and 1.5 million per year and Rose turned him down flat. Rose also
turned Oklahoma down and they offered a reported 1.7 million. He also turned NC
State down and they offered somewhere in the same amount as Oklahoma. It has
also been reported that BYU and Rose have basicly agreed on a new deal and it
will soon be finalized and signed. You can hold out hope all you want
but really the ending for you will be a bad one whether you delay it it in your
mind or not.Sorry but it just isn't happening and frankly it never
was going to happen.
@ mormo ute:The only condescension is ute fans assumig rose wants
Dave Rose is a good coach and a better man, husband and father, but Dave how
about winning just one tournament. You will never be considered a great coach
until you do.
