English speaking Missionaries were being sent to the LTM in Provo as early as
June of 1978. I know because I was there on June 22, 1978 (for a Japanese
Mission) and my companion and I shared a room with two Elders in that program.
They had already been there a while when I arrived at the end of June.
I really appreciated the history of the current MTC facility. As with all
historical information there is the official story and then the real story. I
picked up my old mission journal to verify the dates and found the following:
June 15, 1976 we moved to the new LTM facility. It was not finished but we had
been temporarily housed in Helaman Halls and it was not conducive to missionary
study. So President Pinegar had us move to the new, unfinished facility. All
the Asian and Scandanavian missionaries moved to the new LTM that day. There was
no gym, cafeteria, laundry or any other facilities with the exception of two
classroom buildings and one dorm facility. The Sisters stayed on the first
floor and the Elders on the floors above. It was very inconvenient but better
than staying in Helaman Halls. It was loud and dusty and we had to walk to
campus for meals, laundry. devotionals and everything but study and sleep. We
loved being missionaries just the same. What a nice facility it has become.
