Prove them wrong Aggies, whip K State! Go Cougs!
Chrissy, hedgy, and howard fall to the floor in the fetal position. Aggies,
welcome to the world of BYU.
Go Aggies!! I am a BYU fan and grad, but can't believe how badly the Aggies were
treated by the committee. This is truly one of the worst performances overall by
a selection committee in years, and slapping the Aggies with a 12 is one of the
most egregious failures. I hope the guys from Logan can prove them wrong with a
stellar showing and a W against K-State.
Utah State got hosed!!
Aggies Can thank Stew and the fans for this slap. Adios Aggies! The fans don't
demand Stew to play anyone. Keep playing tough teams even if you have to do 2
for 1. One trip to Georgetown in 10 years does nothing for your SOS. Stew is
comfortable in his little haven and the fans are happy playing 28 wimpy games
per year. Get out of the comfort zone.
Aggies got a bad break, but have a chance to upset K-State. Dick, you should
use more than a spell checker to proofread your columns. A couple of glaring
mistakes takes away from a pretty good analysis.
30-3, ranked #17 and they get...a 12th seed. That's hosed at its finest. However, conventional wisdom states that at least one 12 seed will beat
a 5 seed. The committee may have set Kansas State too high and USU
too low, and the game would in reality be a "7 vs 10" had they needed
more 7 or 10 seeds. This reminds me of the Utah and Arizona game two years ago.
Many folks thought the Utes were put too high and Arizona too low. Arizona
proved this when they not only beat the Utes but advanced to the
sweet-sixteen.So, Aggies, time to get over the frustration of
getting hosed. If you are as good as Kansas State, then go out there and beat
I was right on my last prediction (a lost to SDSU), and here's my next one:
You'll win your first game, then lose the second. Jimmer is a player, but he
has no supporting cast. SDSU exposed that weakness in a most glaring manner. You
did the best you could with what you had. Now, the ride is over, and time to
look for a new coach. And shooting guard. And center. And power forward. And...
I have been an Aggie fan since 1970, and attended the first game held at The
Spectrum. I hate to say this, but Stew should immediately put his
name into consideration for the Utah head coaching job, as he will never get any
respect from the selection committee while at at USU. Yes, their
strength of schedule hurt him. But he has gone on record as willing to play
anybody in the nation on a home and home basis, with few takers. In
the Pac 12, he will be able to recruit better, build a home court advantage such
as that Rick Majurus, and go against mentor Mike Montgomery. A 30-3 record in
the Pac 12 would mean a #1 seed, guaranteed. I would hate to see
him leave Utah State, but if I was the Utah AD, I would be on the phone to him
USU is a very fine team, but they will lose to a better team. BYU is still a
good team and will win the first round, and then lose.
Well Dick it is time now to put up or go home. The respect vs. disrespect
argument is weak. The talent will rise to the top and if USU is as good as you
hope then then what is the "Pro-blame-O-" this is why we play the
tourney to put your money and your slanted bias fan fallowing where your mouth
is.Lets go Aggies and Cougars show up or go home baby !
Big time aggie fan, but the boys from logan did it to themselves. They needed a
strong showing in the WAC tourney, but barely beat two mediocre teams. They
were sloppy, careless passes, soft defense. If they play K-State the way they
played last night, it will be one and out--again.....
Go Aggies- I would add it is hard to say the MW got respect when the PAC-10 got
4 teams in and the furthest west #1 was Kansas- then again the selection comm.
only has two former players on it and so it is not hard to figure out how they
make some really silly decisions
USU and Kansas State should both be mad. How many other top 25 teams (in both
polls) have to face each other in the first round. Poor job by the committee.
"The talent will rise to the top and if USU is as good as you hope then
then what is the "Pro-blame-O-" this is why we play the
tourney"The whole "Pro-blame-O-" is this sets up a
first round loss for a top 25 team-- no matter who wins.
Whine Whine Whine, the table has been set now just sit down and eat up what's in
front of you, that's all you can do.If you are the better team then go out
and prove it!Oh and I am sure Hedgie the expert will be on here
shortly predicting a loss to Wofford, cuz they got the skillz over the gimmick.
I think the Aggies can take K-State.
First round loss will come for a number of top 25 teams, everyone from #2 to 68
gets a shot at some one above them lets Play ball and quite whining !
I live in Big XII country and I will say the KState is one of the best teams
around. Some feel the are as good, if not better than Kansas...they did whip
Kansas hard this year too. I don't think they are better, but they are way
better than USU. The only good win of USU's is St. Mary's, who fell apart at
the end of the season, so that is hardly a good win anymore. I can count on
almost 3 hands the good wins KSU has. Sorry, USU is done. BYU can beat Gonzaga
or St. John's, especially with their top player out. BYU should make the Sweet
Sorry Aggies, you got hosed on that one, but beat K-State and now you are in the
5 seed spot where you should have been.Cougs, let's go win a couple
on the other side on the mountain!
Looking at USU schedule, they really only played 3 tough teams all year (BYU,
Georgetown, and St Mary's) and went 1-2 in those games. Now I agree that USU
should be a higher seed, probably between a 7 to 9 seed but the bottomline is if
USU wants more respect they have to schedule tougher opponents.
BYU grad here, but I am tired of the coastal biases, and the "storied
programs" that get undeserved respect too often. Utah State has a great
tradition in basketball, and in a year when they played well, they should be
seeded better. I will be rooting for USU, as well as the Cougars this year. I
always cheer on the Aggies unless they are playing BYU.
Beat the #5 seeded K-State and from there on you have a 5 seed position. Take
this as a great opportunity to showcase how good Utah State Aggie basketball is
and has been. I am a BYU fan and follower of USU. I think they have
a great team and we were thrilled to win a tight one at the Marriott earlier
this year. I wish both teams well in the tournament and will root
hardest for USU in the first round, as they have the greatest opportunity to
grab the attention of the nation with the first game!
Beating K-state will prove how good this team really is. Losing to K-state is
nothing to hang your head about. USU is in the perfect no-lose position. Play
with a chip on your shoulder and get it done.
Come on Aggies! Let's see the upset!!! We're all cheering for you.
The committee has done nothing different then our own local newspapers have all
year. Give no love to a great and solid team. when there are 4 articles a day on
the Cougars and you have to search through the back pages to get any info on the
Aggies....Come on DNews. You are part of the problem as well. That being said,
Lets have a great tournament. This time of year is great. Last years tournament
was amazing. We can only hope for something as good. Too bad the college
football season ends horrible and not anything like the feeling of March
Enough with the "feel good" wins! I agree with KamUte. The Aggies do
it to themselves by playing the most home games of almost anyone in the country,
and because of that, their RPI will kick their chances everytime. I laughed
when Harmon eluded to them being able to take anyone in the Spectrum, cuz nobody
cares who you can beat at home. Get out of Logan!!! Any away game win trumps a
home win, no matter who you play out of conference. But you actually have to
play away out of conference....more than once. That said, K-state is sporatic at
best, I think USU can beat 'em, so go do it!
National recognition and respect for BYU. Get used to it girls. It's only going
to get better and better for them in Basketball, Football and every other sport.
BYU fans will continue to enjoy one of the top schools in the country while you
jealously peek through the windows. crisb,It's pretty easy to
be right 9% of the time when you predict a loss every game. Thank you for the
prediction of a 2nd round loss. I feel much better about getting to the sweet
Yes, USU deserved at least a 9 seedTJ, I'll be the first to admit
BYU has a great team this year, but take away Jimmer, Emery and Davies and next
year the cupboards are pretty bare. I don't think BYU wins more than 19 games
TJ,Out of curiosity, were you alive the last time BYU was in the
Sweet 16?It was 30 years ago.
Aggies got trashed with a 12 seed (and playing in KState's Tulsa backyard), but
it was interesting that 1-2 on the CBS Selection Show predicted an Aggie upset
of K State. The Aggies have good bigs, a solid perimeter game (if Newbold can
find his shot), and great guard play from Paine. I'm predicting a single-digit
upset by USU.
BYU is lucky to get a number 3 and should beat Wofford but let's not
underestimate them. BYU has a horrible post season record vs. good competition
in both football and basketball and we constantly overestimate ourselves while
our teams seem to have not saved their best for last. These tournament teams in
our bracket have played well the last 2 weeks while we are 3-2. I
don't see us beating St. Johns or UCLA or anyone else in the 2nd or 3rd rounds.
Without Davies and with the rest of the starters playing flat and no bench, we
are dead in the water. Abuo, Emery, and Collinsworth need to play their best for
us to have any chance of advancing. Outside of the Wyoming game in the past 2
weeks, that hasn't been the case. If we beat Wofford, it will be fun
to see Jimmer play a great St. Johns team and get some recognition in New York.
He is deserving of all the exposure he can get - he's an awesome
once-in-a-lifetime player who has that rare combination of exceptional talent
AND sportsmanship. A true class act.
usu never plays any one that is any good so they are lucky to get the seed they
got. Merrillthinks he is the best coach in the state but he is far from
If the Aggies truly deserve that #17 ranking, then they should have no problem
taking out the #24 team that just lost to Colorado in the Big 12 Tournament,
right? Stew says that he will play anyone anywhere...so now you play a lower
ranked team on a neutral court in the tournament. Once the Aggies
win in the first round, then they probably get to play a Wisconsen team with a
similar national ranking. That's a fair match-up when you get to the last 32
teams in the tourney isn't it?If you win, then you play the rest of
the tournament just like you were placed as a 5-seed...if USU is really as good
as the fans want to say they are, then they will win against a lower ranked team
and compete with a Wisconsen team that seems to struggle scoring. Would you
rather get the "respect" of playing in the 8/9 game and then face a
number 1 seed to have a chance at the Sweet 16?Time to quit whining
and just start winning to back up that #17 ranking!
davies was no loss to the tds jimmer is a terrific player & the only one
So mr. Dyer, who is a better coach? the one who got fired, the one who got lucky
with a GREAT player, I know it is not the one down here in Southern Ut. So who
Ironhide and KamUte: Sorry but I won't listen to any criticism from teams who
refuse to play us.
Dyer is wrong, Stew is the best coach by far in Utah, put anyone else in Logan
and they'd win 50%, take the church away from Rose or the PAC 12 away from Utah
and they're compete with SUU or UVSC at best. Utah already can't win. What USU
needs to do is buck-up, win the first round or two and the next time they'll get
respect, that easy, it took BYU like 6 years to win the in the first round, then
a 30 win season to get respect, Utah wount see a first round for a few years
now. College is about recuirting first, them coaching, but that is part of what
makes a coach, a coach, it's a package deal not always about X's and O's. Try
and recuirt Logan, it's more like recuirting in Laramie Wym.
All season long all I have read from many posters on this board is how it
doesn't matter what conference you are in when it comes to basketball because
the BCS boys do not control basketball like they do football. Many posters also
wrote that the PAC 10 was inferior this year and would be lucky to get two teams
into the tourney while the MWC would get four teams in. Well, did you watch the
NCAA tourney selection show yesterday?PAC 10 four teams selectedMWC
three teams selectedWAC one team selectedWCC one team selectedGoing forward BYU, Gonzaga and St Mary's will fight over the one
selection each year for the NCAA tourney. The BCS conferences still rule even
Everybody.....STOP COMPLAINING!!! USU is WAC Champion; K-State finished 3rd
place in Big-12; fourth best record in Big -12. This game is very winnable for
the Aggies. Just go win.
BYU needs to enjoy this year, may not be back for a few years and I'm not a BYU
hater. I cheer fro every Utah that gets in, no hateful attitude, like em all but
I see USU continuing to make it to the tourney, they just need to win now, they
have agood seed in which to advance, take advantage and win a couple. They alway
have next year, the other D-1's may be done for a few years or at least BUY wont
get the respect they got this year moving west.. Stew is the best coach in Utah
DutchmanYou're welcome to your opinion, but, going forward, the WCC
will be a two- or three-bid league with BYU in the conference. Saint Mary's
would have gotten a 2nd bid for the WCC if they hadn't faded at the end of the
season; the Gaels were a Sweet 16 team last year and Gonzaga has become a
fixture in the NCAA tournament.Four bids from the PAC 12 won't help
the Utes if they continue finishing 6th or 7th in the conference, which where
they usually finish in the MWC. USC's bid was a joke, a gift from the Selection
Committee. Several more deserving teams were left out of the Big Dance.
Is Utah going to get Morrill or Rose next year? I have had some people tell me
they've seen Rose in Salt Lake quite a but lately.
Dick Dick Dick, always complaining about something. Just be glad BYU got a
favorable seeding and has no excuses and that Utah State got a 12 seed. A 12
seed always upsets a 5 seed so why not Utah State? Be happy!
mussingaround,"Four bids from the PAC 12 won't help the Utes if
they continue finishing 6th or 7th in the conference, which where they usually
finish in the MWC"Utah won the conference and the league
tourney two years ago and got a 5 seed in the NCAA tourney. If that reflects
your knowledge of basketball I stand by my assessment that the WCC will be a one
team selection and with the PAC 10 going to 12 the power conferences that
control football and basketball will make sure the PAC 12 gets at least 5 of six
Just win, baby. All that matters, regardless of seed.
I love the USU basketball program, admittedly hate the fans (thank you Max for
being honest about the pukes)love Stu Morrell, although I don't know how to
spell his name, but at the end of that proverbial day, USU Aggies got ripped off
in the worst of ways. Not only a slap in the face, but a slap to all the
so-called 'mid-majors' whatever that is supposed to mean. USU deserved a 4-5
seed and I don't care what idiots compose the Committee, they were wrong. It was
an egregious placement. Makes me sick. All I hope is that the aggies not just
win the game against KSU, but put a serious beat down on them. Go
Maybe Rose is the kinda guy that likes taking busted programs and rehabbing
them. If so, he's a good man and would be doing God's work. I hope he would be
appreciated. Of course we all hope he stays. I personally think that
life after Jimmer will be interesting, it will be different, but I do believe
that we'll be okay. Hopefully with Coach Rose. And Davies. And all the rest of
the happy family.
I like the aggies chances. I have them to the sweet 16. I have the Cougars 2 and
out. They simply weren't the same without the scoring in the post. Fredette's a
great player but, he's still only one.
You know what? There's a rumor going around that Chris B. is really a BYU fan
that is trying to make Ute fans look bad. If he is, he's succeeding beyond his
wildest dreams. I hope he's not really a BYU fan. That would be really
disappointing. That would be even worse than all the nasty and unfair anti-BYU
comments. Say it ain't so, Chris.
I'm happy with the seed and expect BYU to finally make it past the second round.
I wouldn't bet beyond that, but playing into late March will be fun. Go
Cougars! As for Utah State, they did get cheated. However, look on
the bright side: if they win the first round--and they have a decent
chance--they will have just turned their 12-seed into a 5-seed, which is closer
to what they deserved. Good luck little bros!
Everyone talks about how much USU improved their schedule by playing G-town and
almost beating BYU but the problem is they lost both those games. Name one team
that has a better seed than USU that USU has beat this year? Also, when was the
last time USU won a first round game? In order to get a better seed you have to
actually beat better teams. If they would have beat G-town or BYU it would have
been a different story. If you don't win in big games why do you deserve a
better seed in the big dance?
Uncle Artie in Brigham is a great realist. I hope the Ags do well. My father
played football at USU (when USU was really good) and I attended a year at Utah
State and loved my experience but transferred to the U. The depth and strength
of Kansas State is unreal compared to USU. Wesley is good but he simply is not
big enough to stay with the two bigs at Kansas State. To win, the three ball
will have to drop. That's why they play the games.
If you want to know why Utah didn't get a higher seed, take a look at the RPI
Top 20 and tell me which record jumps out at you; then guess which team that
is:RPI Rank - Record against RPI Top 1001 - 21-22 -
19-23 - 13-24 - 17-45 - 12-46 - 16-67 - 12-78 - 17-49 - 15-610 - 13-511 - 12-712 - 16-613 -
9-1014 - 21-915 - 2-216 - 13-817 - 12-818 -
12-619 - 10-620 - 14-5
USU would not feel bad if they were #5 and K-State was #12. Why not view it
that way and go win. Be happy to be in the weakest bracket. You couldn't be in
a better spot.
According to the eye test, of course the Aggies deserve somewhere between a 7
and a 10-seed......the problem (and Morrill fails to see it) is that the
committee looks at WHO YOU PLAYED! Only playing the likes of Boise State,
Idaho, Louisiana Tech--no matter how much you beat them by--looks much worse on
a NCAA resume than a few losses to good teams do.I think the Aggies
are a very good team, but Morrill has to be willing to schedule games against
other good programs (more than 2-3 per year) without always expecting a
home-and-home deal. He's a great coach, but his stubbornness puts a lot of
unnecessary pressure on his team to win the conference tourney every year just
to stay off the bubble. If you have a weak schedule but win 30 games,
you still have to win your conference tournament. What a travesty (think about
it) if the Aggies hadn't won the WAC tournament--they'd be in the NIT!I don't think K-State has any clue about what's gonna hit 'em. Go Cougars and
go Aggies--make the state of Utah proud!
