"Now that the other Jimmer is gone,..."

it's sad that the only way to get attention to this story is to lead with a reference to a player on another team. Sad writing Brad. Jim Boylen and Jimmer Fredette aren't even in the same class. The editors should have sent this story back for major rewriting.

Hill: "I think that was a challenge, being in a non-BCS conference, and many times people could see the job in the Mountain West as a stepping-stone job."

Would the WCC then be a demotion?

The u is already an embarrassment to the pac 10.2! The encore will bring down the curtain!

Don't even mention Kruger, he wouldn't give the Utah job one second of consideration. He's more than happy @ UNLV.If you Eweties want ex BYU folks, how about Roger Reid he will be available after getting the boot at SUU, and would be more than a good fit for what you have as a second rate basketball program.

you're right about yutah being an embarrassment part....hahahaha....looks like the team and fans from SLC aka Same Losing Community will take that same mentality to the pac 11....classic.

I'm not at all a Ute fan but being in the PAC 12 should make the job easier to fill with a big name. I've met Boylen several times and he is a terrific guy and I hope he has success. Heck, fired and handed $2 million would certainly help.

Dave Rose and Lon Kruger would be the top two on my list.

I'm sure the 2 million dollar severance will help Boylen get over this just fine. Despite chris hills weak assertions otherwise this is certainly a big hit to an already strained athletic budget. Still he really couldn't let it go on any longer as the hc was a wasteland for every game other than the BYU game when Cougar fans filled it up.

Sad that the Johnny-come-lately fans somehow think a few poor seasons indicates that they've had better success in basketball.
Andre Miller NCAA tourney wins: 11
    byu's NCAA tourney wins: 10

Now really, who is more pathetic?

Gee ernest you could basicly say the same thing about ute fans and utahs monstrous run of 6 years of mixed success in football. Let's see two great season, one pretty good season and 3 mediocre ones. Yea that's the equivalent of 40 years. LOL

Andy Katz has a great list.

    Randy Bennett (St. Mary's)
    Trent Johnson (LSU)
    Blaine Taylor (Old Dominion)
Mark Gottfried (former Alabama head coach)

I've also heard Tony Bennett is a possibility.

I'd love Gottfried, either of the Bennetts, or Taylor. Since his stint at LSU, though, I'm not a big Trent Johnson fan.

I wonder if Plan B will be better than Plan A. Looks to me like Utah just threw away $2M and will right back where they were at. Let's see what this PAC 12 label gets you. If it is a low profile name, it will definitely be a reality check for where you really are on the pecking order.

As I said yesterday...there isn't a credible coach in the country that wants any part of the grease fire that has become Utah Basketball.

The university has mistreated its last two coaching selections, there is no NBA level talent currently on the team, what decent players are there are now released to transfer with the coaching change, there are no recruits worth mentioning, and the basketball competition next year gets severe. Not a very good recipe for rebuilding success.

Predictions? The next Ute coach is gone in three years too...and the Utes continue their steak of "none and done" well into the next decade.

  • Teafortwo salt lake city, utah
    March 13, 2011 9:02 a.m.

Pac-10 envy is alive and well on this board. The Utes will do just fine. Their football is already on par with the best of the Pac-10, and they have one of the most successful basketball programs of all time. Top 25 in victories, winning percentage and NCAA tournament appearances and victories, even though they have struggled lately, due mostly to poor coaching decisions. Playing in the Pac-10 will help solve that problem.

When was the last time BYU made the Sweet Sixteen? Or the BCS......

    March 13, 2011 9:11 a.m.

Even without coaching experience, Karl Marlone would be my pick for a big name who could probably recruit and teach. He has indicated that he wouldn't mind getting into coaching and this might be a good place to start. With him being a "beginner" and Utah having fallen on hard times, this might be a good marriage.

  • Teafortwo salt lake city, utah
    March 13, 2011 9:53 a.m.

Duckhunter- The Utes football success of recent years compares favorably to BYU success of the past 35 years. Much better bowl record, 2 undefeated seasons, 2 BCS victories, the only undefeated team in the country in 2008-09, which matches BYUs national championship in 1984. And the Utes still maintain the overall series edge by a significant margin. I congratulate BYU on their success, but you are mistaken if you think it trumps the Utes.

    Sam

Sorry man but K Malone? He can barely put a coherent sentence together that anyone can understand. Can you see Karl trying to recruit? Go from one bad recruiter to Karl Malone?

Great player and hard worker but not coach material.

I still think Tommy Connor would be the best choice. We need someone with a Utah connection that can recruit the local kids against Rose. Connor with Alex Jensen as his first assistant.

Either way, Go Dr Hill and Go Utes!

    RE: utahcountyute

"We need someone with a Utah connection that can recruit local kids."

    Why?

Moving to the Pac-12, I look forward to the Utes having a larger talent pool to recruit from. Sure, if there is ONE great kid in the valley, you try to land him. But I don't see the Utes sweeping up a bunch of local talent then competing in the Pac-12.

The Jimmer is not a Utah native. What local talent has Dave Rose developed? With all respect to Coach Rose... he may be the greatest coach in the state of Utah, but that's not saying much. Many Ute fans would be disappointed to go on a national search for a coach, only to have Rose step in.

Some say he'd jump because BYU is WCC bound next year. The WCC is ideal for them. Strength of schedule doesn't matter in baseketball. At least one WCC team goes to the NCAA tourney every year. BYU could do that. We don't need to save Coach Rose from the WCC. He'll be fine.

Question to all you BYU fans predicting a dire future for Utah Basketball. Why do care Utah does; why do you swarm to Utah stories and leave your condescending drivel? What does that say about you? Utah B-Ball will be just fine, it has a proud tradition (proudest in the state based upon overall win- loss and post season success). Go worry about your WCC team and getting the monkey off your back about never going far in the tourney. Bottom line, aim higher so quit being trolls.

I think Utah ought to give Jerry Sloan a call. He can bring Phil Johnson with him. I guarantee that the Utes would be a tough contender. As a BYU fan, I hope Utah gets a great new coach and takes the PAC 10/12 by storm! I would love to see the State represented with class in that conference. But if they get one more dud, maybe it is time for Hill to hang it up!

  • Otis Spurlock Ogden, UT
    March 13, 2011 12:10 p.m.

If Rose does jump ship (titanic) and moves up to the PAC 12 with Utah, it will be interesting to see if BYU fans treat Rose like they have treated Norm Chow.

  • utahcountyute Cedar Hills, UT
    March 13, 2011 1:52 p.m.

    Moderate

I was not really referring to having a bunch of local kids like back in the 40's. All I am saying is that even Majerus saw the value of developing some of the local kids to give interest and make a connection to local fans.

I get it that we need to bring in those Van Horns, Millers and Boguts but it sure is fun to cheer for those few local kids too.

We all know that the biggest factor is WINNING though.

I really doubt that Dave Rose will drop things in Provo to come up to the U. He is a good coach no doubt and I would welcome him but I just don't see that happening.

Get it done Dr Hill. We know you don't mess up very often and this is your chance to get it right.

Good Luck UTAH in finding a new coach. One that will bring back the 'ole glory days' of the Running Utes! I am a BYU Grad, but I remember growing up watching the likes of Coach Ken Gardner (at the helm) and players such as Billy McGill. Now that was a special time! Of which (most basketball fans) are looking forward to the time when those days return to Utah.

Sports should not be a vehicle to criticize or hate one another (simply because of their allegiance), it is an opportunity to appreciate creative coaching, model mentoring, great teamwork/chemistry, life experiences, fair play, and individual excellence. It is mostly the time for developing our young men and women.

Again, here's to the great athletic program of a (another) special University in the state of Utah. Not to forget "any of the others" (USU, WSU, SUU, etc.)

  • Dutchman Murray, UT
    March 13, 2011 3:54 p.m.

Tony Bennett of Virginia would make a great PAC 12 coach. After all, he sang "I Left My Heart in San Francisco".

We will now find out soon if Dave Rose (off to the lowly WCC) and Stew Morrill (any WAC conference left?) are really happy with their future situations. I found both of their statements in interviews yesterday about the Boylen firing intriqueing. Both were very careful not to criticize Hill for firing Boylen. Usually coaches in secure situations as Rose and Morrill will often say something like, "I think my colleague deserved more time and should not have been let go". No such saying from those two. My sense is if you are interested in a job you won't criticize your future employer.

This is not the time to 'pile on' the U's basketball problems. They need to have a good program, Pac 10 or not. And I'm a Coug fan.

There is no need to diss on Boylen or Chris Hill. There has been enough problems without jumping up and down on them. There is already plenty of humility.

For heaven's sake, let's be observers of the selection process (which actually should be plenty interesting), or at least be silent if you don't have something nice to say.

Went to Utah in the 60s when Jack Gardner was there. Another great coach is Lon Kruger here in Vegas. Please don't try. We've got a great team next year. Don't want to lose him. How about Few at Gonzaga.

  • Tuffy Parker Salem, UT
    March 14, 2011 8:32 a.m.

Hill should have hired Juddy instead of Giacoletti. Hill should have hired Juddy instead of Boylen. There's probably too much at stake for Hill to hire Juddy now but it is an absolute shame that Hill looked past him twice.

As a BYU fan, I'm somewhat glad that Hill dropped the ball but also have tremendous respect for Judkins and have a hard time understanding why he did not get his chance at Utah. He was/is a great recruiter - especially with the local kids. He is popular with the fan base and even the BYU nut case fans would have a hard time finding much to dislike about him.

Maybe Dr. Hill will pull off some unanticipated miracle with the next hire but I'm not holding my breath. Perhaps it's time to consider Juddy again...

Mark Few from Gonzaga would be a great choice for coach (but he would probably bring Giacoletti with him)! Hope you make the right choice, Dr. Hill. With the higher prices associated with the PAC 12, the Ute nation needs a lot of changes - not only the coach. Coach first - HOW TO GET THE FANS BACK INTO THE STANDS, second! It's sad, sad, sad to go to the basketball games and see the crowd get smaller and smaller. Yes, Utah has the same kind of fair weather fans as any other school. Winning is great, the the players need support when they are have a bad year, too! G O U T E S!!

Rumor is that Davies is leaning towards joining Rose up north. TDS is going to make him miss a full season anyways, so why not return to the same coach and a school without silly archaic rules?

One problem you find with Few at Gonzaga. One of his Asst's is Ray G. He knows the area well but do we want him here again? Boylen did good things out selling the program, increasing the student section etc. You still need to win. What about Billy Gilespie? The guy who coached at Kentucky. He paid his dues...... Let's get a big name and roll the dice......

Just for Hedgie...watch the WCC in just the next couple of years as it's raised and built up just like the MWC was and the WAC before it... especially post Arizona and Arizona State, who left the WAC and settled in almost near obscurity as no's. 9 and 10 in the PAC. 11 and 12 have a wakeup call that they're going to have a hard time with when it soon hits tem in the face this fall. Good luck Hedgie...reality's just around the corner.

  • Bluto Sandy, UT
    March 18, 2011 5:13 p.m.

    Hey Chris Hill

The BCS applies to Football not Basketball! YOur first mistake.

In college hoops, it's about RPI, National TV, National Polls.

If you think your problems are cured by virtue of Coat-tailing through Conference affiliation, then you're in for a rude awakening.

NObody considers Utah a major player in basketball today.

Gonzaga, St. Mary's, BYU, UNLV, San Diego State, New Mexico, are programs Coaches & Players would not leave for Utah.

Empty Arena, No consistent National TV, mounting debt, being only 3rd or 4th best program in your State, will do that.

Empty promises, and a false sense of prestige, has brought Chris Hill to where Utah is just a bad job anymore.

U is entering the Land of Obscurity, because nobody will be watching U, Nationally or otherwise.

U will never have the exposure of BYU, all games National, Own Network, ESPN Contract....

One half of all teams in the so called Big-6 conferencs are window dressing.
Bottomfeeders, Utah is in this group.

The U lost the local recruits, especially the LDS kids, when Judkins was made to sit in the stands as an assistant coach, and then run off for good.

  • Bluto Sandy, UT

    "Dr". is reserved for MD's.

Bill Cosby never refers to himself as "Dr". He doesn't need the narcisistic ego boost.

He is indeed a PhD , as is Chris Hill.

Again, Utah fans with a false sense of superiority.
