Wow that big least travel just seems crazy, but money is nice right?Indy is better.
I believe that the spurned lover syndrome hitting MWC board rooms and athletic
admin offices will soon be alleviated when a UNLV, New Mexico, CSU, or Wyoming
finds itself buried in red ink and voila, an instant solution all dressed in
Prussian Blue is too good to resist. Oh Tom, make 'em play in Provo while your
Y4life,Just as the tds is almost guaranteed going to the Krafty
Hunger Bowl every year, TCU is almost a sure thing to go to a BCS EVERY
year.Kind of a no brainer.
It probably would help BYU to treat a basketball and football relationship with
TCU separately. Continued football games against TCU would be exciting. But I
don't think BYU stands much to gain with continued basketball games against TCU.
If BYU wants to play hoops in TEXAS, there are much better teams than TCU to
try to line up.
Hedgehog, glad you have somewhere to post your negative retoric. If you did so
on your own team's articles, such as how great Ute BB is doing this year, you
might be kicked off, or at least your input would not be posted, and the Ute
fans would certainly not be too excited at the prospect. Notice that I did not
include you as a Ute fan - you are nothing but a BYU detractor. You live &
die by BYU FB. Thank you for your support for BYU on these BYU articles. It
shows that you care in your own odd way. Have a great day.
Hey Wedgie,Last night ESPN Sportcenter reported on Utah then
Washington State one right after the other; you know side by side, like Mutt
& Jeff, Laurel & Hardy. Get used to it buddy; looks like it will be a
long term association.
to panamadesnews, you don't need to read or post anything to this guy hedgie. Why baskeball with tcu? I like the idea with fb but bb?
TCU:GREAT football team.Class-less head coach.
@MacNasty"Utah then Washington State one right after the other;
you know side by side, like Mutt & Jeff, Laurel & Hardy."*******************Mocking Washington State and Utah?In January 2003 Washington State was in the Rose Bowl following a PAC 10
championship. BYU was staying home after a 5-7 season. In January
2009 Utah was beating Alabama in the Sugar Bowl while BYU had lost to Arizona in
the Vegas Bowl.Mutt&Jeff/Laurel&Hardy have been to the prime
time within the last decade.Funny that they would be mocked by those
who haven't seen the big time in more than two decades.
hedgehog | 6:17 a.m. Feb. 20, 2011 And your yoots will be playing board
games during the PAC 10 bowl season.
"...as BYU will need friendships with former foes to fill out its
independent slate in football."*****************Funny
that BYU all of a sudden needs friends since they have spent most of the last 3
decades alienating every conference mate they ever had.
TCU is a class program with great tradition. Having BYU play there and in
Football or Basketball helps with the exposure that BYU is after by going
independant in Football. Basketball still has a non conference schedule to make
a run at. Teams like TCU will want BYU on the schedule as the gate from a sold
out game is much higher than the gate of an average attendance. Besides, the
BYU fans in Texas get to see the Cougars in person. Great way to get that
exposure. Go Cougars. I look forward to seeing the non conference
schedule in future years. Now, it BYU could get back into the Great Alaksa
SHootout during Thanksgiving, I could watch them again. Go Cougars.
Howard, now that you have ressurected WSU's one bright spot in football since
the end of leather helmets, don't let me be hearin' you rag on 1984 as if it was
some aberration in the cosmic football universe.
You play TCU for big-time football exposure, but schedule them for basketball to
pad your schedule. It's good on both counts. The upcoming TCU v. BYU
FB game sounds like a real winner! I would not be surprised if the Y won and I'm
hoping they do. But I'm also interested in Utah's introduction into the PAC 12.
Their success there will a validation of the kind of football the MWC has been
playing the past few years.Go Cougs!
Y Grad / Y Dad"...don't let me be hearin' you rag on 1984 as if
it was some aberration in the cosmic football universe."************************* Right you are... 1984 was
not some aberration in the cosmic football universe.1984 was THE
aberration of the cosmic football universe. It was the aberration
that led to the evolution of the modern BCS.It's poetic justice now
that BYU stands on the outside looking in on the very entity that was created by
their 1984 aberration.Oh, and while WSU 2003 may be an aberration it
is at least an aberration of the current decade and not almost 3 decades old.
"ESPN played a big part in putting the Oct. 28 game together."Gotta love that 8 yr ESPN contract. Poor bitter and jealous hedgie and
howard just can't stand all of the media attention this little independent
program gets almost every week.Great to be a Cougar Fan! Better dead than irrelevant red!
@sammyg"all of the media attention this little independent
program gets almost every week."****************ESPN
helped BYU sign a one and done in the opponents backyard.Big
Whoop...Utah has signed perpetual home and homes with Stanford, USC,
and Oregon.I'll choose perpetual home and homes over on the road one
and dones any day.And so would the vast majority of Cougar fans who
quietly (and sometimes not so quietly) hope for that phone call from the BIG 12
that will never come.
Y4LYFE - Yeah, when I first heard about the Big East move, I wondered about the
travel. After looking into it a bit more, though, it turns out the average game
trip is only marginally longer (+100 miles). And with the MWC adding Boise,
Nevada, Fresno and maybe Hawaii, we'd actually be traveling much father had we
stayed.BleedCougarBlue: Sorry you feel that way about Patterson.
Here in Texas, we feel rather differently.I'm glad we're playing
y'all this year. Maybe with BYU's independence we'll be able to meet every few
years going forward. We'd gotten a good rivalry started in the MWC, and it's
good to see it continue. I've a lot of respect for the BYU football team and
tradition, and have always enjoyed the fans. Nothing but best wishes for you
this year - except on game day in Arlington, of course, when I'll be howling for
Cougar blood. No offense. :)
"Y" wins in September 24-17. u goes to the PAC-12 CC game and loses
to UO 21-20.Howard S - Have to disagree with you...if 1984 was an
aberration it was because the U'Dud refused to play the No. 1 ranked team in a
Championship game, they were invited to play but they refused to play.
Championships are won on the field, not in newpapers. This was the first time a
No. 2 refused to play a No. 1. However it was not the 1984 team you should be
thanking for the two BCS bowls...it is the 1997 Cotton Bowl Team. They did all
of the heavy lifting that has allowed the u, BSU and TCU to have access to BCS
games. Without this team access would have been denied to all Non-AQ's. You
may want to issue a thank you, and be grateful others have help.Your
"perpetual home and home" games with USC and UO may be going
away...both schools are develpoing indy plans as is Texas and U of OK.
Developing a plan and implementating the plan are two different things...but it
is being examined. Perpetual, maybe not.
Why play TCU in basketball?Because TCU's basketball program will
improve quickly and dramatically as a member of the Big East.Because
a game against a Big East opponent will be attractive to ESPN and fans in every
time zone.Because Texas is the second most populous state and
fertile recruiting ground for basketball and football.Because a
basketball recruit OR a football recruit can go to a basketball game.Because television exposure isn't enough. Fans want to see the team in person
once in awhile.
"For that matter, will the Frogs play BYU in basketball again? Certainly
selling out an arena is a big deal for Conte and TCU since the last time this
happened in basketball was six years ago with a Texas Tech game on
campus."---------So before we all get big heads --
and I'm a Cougar fan -- the article makes it clear TCU hasn't sold out with BYU
in the house the previous five years. Hard to make a "we'll fill your
house" argument without Jimmer. BYU should hope TCU asks them back.
Playing TCU in basketball and football whenever it can reasonably be arranged
would be great. I think the Horned Frogs fans are great and I think their
athletic dept. is doing a great job.But there are lots of selfish
reasons as well. Playing games in Texas is a must in both sports. Playing a Big
East team is obviously a plus in basketball and they are an AQ in football. I just don't see any negatives to it. Sure BYU will not beat the Frogs
every time they play them, especially in football as their program is simply
excellent, but all you really want is the opportunity to do it and from there
whatever happens, happens. There are zero negatives to playing them
whenever it can be arranged. Please do so, I'll look forward to it.
I don't consider this as a home game for TCU. There are a lot of BYU fans in
DFW. 40% of the fans for the OU / BYU football game were Cougar fans. 75% of
the fans at the TCU / BYU basketball game were Cougar fans. I guarantee at
least 50% of the crowd for the BYU / TCU football game will be Coug fans. This
can really be looked at as a neutral field game.I hope BYU and ESPN
can schedule one game each year in Cowboy stadium. More BYU exposure in Texas
will lead to greater recruiting opportunities in one of the three most
productive states for football recruiting.
Why is Patterson classless? He was right, he never is going to play
in Provo again. BYU agreed to 1 game in his backyard in an NFL stadium, in a
year where they are starting transition to the big east, coming off of a BCS
game win.BYU is just jealous of TCU.TCU: 2 BCS game
appearances, 1 BCS game victory, a BCS conference invite, 2 national
championships, and a coach that knows how to win.
If you live in this state, you must bow down in all humility to the football and
@HowardSince you're fond of the ONE n done favors BCS conferences have
done for MWC teams, can you shed any light on when Michigan will be returning
the U favor? How about Notre Dame? Will Iowa State be dropping by anytime
soon? Didn't think so.Yes, PITT came to play in your sandbox, but
then again, so did San Jose State.
TCU will quickly recruit great basketball talent that wants to play in the Big
East. Texas is a hotspot for basketball talent that will come to
TCU now that it will be on TV against Big East teams.
I'm excited that TCU wants to continue to play us as well as some other power
schools. It will do our program good and theirs. It seems everyone
want's to jump on our 1984 championship team, but there are few facts that
people have forgotten. OU refused to play us in the opening game that year,
because Swizter didn't want to have to prepare for a passing team, his words not
ours. It could have at least put the 2 teams head to head that finished the
split championship. Then Texas A&M canceled a game because our stadium
wasn't big enough, 64,000!!!! Now Washington has refused to play us after us
beating them twice.I think it funny, that teams over the years have
refused to play us, but I've never heard of a team not wanting to play the
"U". Wonder why!!!! There will always be quality teams wanting to
play us and as always we will not walk away from them. TCU is a good example.
@hedgie,howards, aka Ute TrollsWhere is the U's Heisman? Outlands?
Doak Walker?Davey O'Brian's? Sammy Baugh's 7 Hall of Famers National Championship '84 (by "5" organizations)?16 Consensus
and 60+ All Americans?Listen..Numbskulls....2 BCS Bowls
in 6 years, (remember, 10 teams a year are invited, even 4 loss teams), 3
Outright Conference Championships in 53 years, does not a Legacy School Make. The U will never have ESPN paying millions for their broadcast rights.
BYU has 3 National games on ESPN next year, already lined up, with 5 more
pending.Like the Notre Dame of old, these games will be rebroadcast
over and over. The only hope for Utah ever playing on National TV is
when they play BYU.Utah, you are not a draw, you are not even a
regional school.Future recruits will see BYU's "Access and
Exposure", 65k fans at home, ESPN juggernaut support and then what, for the
Utes? The U is already losing recruits to other Pac schools
especially when they see facilities etc.Face it Utes, you only hope
you can someday grow up to be just like Washington State, for that is your
FYI softbearThe 1984 Championship was Not Split...BYU
was the "Consensus National Champion".5 Seperate Organizations
voted BYU Number One.And in the two which matter the most, AP
writers and Coaches Polls...No debate at all. The phony debate was
trumped up by Bryant Gumbal and Barry Switzer, who needed to promote the Orange
Bowl for NBC.Yes, that same Barry Switzer, who 24 years later,
trashed The Utes before the Sugar Bowl, stating "That not one single player
on Utah was even worthy to play for Alabama".We all know what
happened..Utah just cannot let BYU's achievements and stature rest,
they are so insecure that they seek to demean every noteworthy accomplishment
BYU has ever had, even though Utah has never achieved any of them for
themselves.This is 4th grader psychology, folks.Check
out the Senior Vice President of ESPN, and what he thinks about BYU, and that is
all that really matters.ESPN's millions to BYU is all the nipping
little brothers at the U need to know.People in the know, of College
football, knows exactly where BYU stands. The opinions of jealous
little brothers are irrelevant.
BYU and TCU will only occassionally play in football after next year. Every few
years, they'll schedule a home-and-home. In basketball, probably never after
this year, except for maybe at a holiday tournament.
@BlutoEarth to Bluto -Nobody cares about BYU's dusty
gallery of ancient honors. If they did the Cougs would be in a BCS
conference instead of filling ESPN's second tier time slots as the Boise State
@ Bluto -You are funny."People in the know, of
College football, knows exactly where BYU stands."Right, people
do know... On the outside looking in.Funny.
@HowieBYU stands on it's own, cuts Multi-Million dollar contracts
with ESPN. Puts every game on National and International TV.Utah,
needs the collective, socialistic, coat-tail, leech approach for survival. The U isn't allowed full reveune for 5 years, and only if the next
contract exceeds 170 million.Nice Equality. As for National TV, only
when they play BYU.
Howard S.It's better to have a "dusty gallery of ancient
honors" than an empty gallery.BYU has a Legacy Hall filled with
National Awards.Utah has a closet with a couple of bowl trophies.
@BlutoDo you think that shiny new ESPN contract will help BYU
finally win it's way to a BCS bowl invitation?
@SwoopWhile a dusty gallery of ancient honors may be meaningful to
ancient Cougars, it really doesn't mean much in the "what have you done for
me lately" world of college football.
TrueBlue: I think you're right about the occasional nature of future TCU-BYU
football. Like I said before, I'm glad at the possibility the rivalry will
continue and certainly grateful we were able to schedule y'all this year after
Tech fled from us for the second year in a row.I think it would be
outstanding to meet every few years. Next year, probably not. It's our first
year in the Big East and our OOC includes Virginia, Oklahoma and SMU (who keep
getting better under June Jones). After all that, we'll probably want to sweeten
our palates with a cupcake instead of a brawl with the Cougars.
Hey Howard S.How many times can you shout "We Are Bride's
maids" before anybody will pay attention to you?Answer:
Infinite...nobody cares...and by the way, dust is collecting on your bride's
@MacNastyA little dusty, maybe...But not termite
infested like a certain 26 year old trophy.
To the U guys and the true Blue, it's time for all of us to look at the facts.
It doesn't really matter what we have accomplished in the past--last 10 or last
50 years--that's all behind us. What happens in the future is what will count
now. We're both headed in new directions and none of us know how that
is truly going to work out. So until the end of next season, perhaps all of us
should pull back and wish both of our teams the best and hope they live up to
what we think they can do. Other wise both of us could be looking for a place
to hide. Until we play--- know one has an answer!!
