This article should have mentioned the problems at Michigan that got him fired
and which caused victories to be taken off the board.
Hands down the best team and coach in the MWC... not even close.
SDSU has a fanastic basketball program and a great coach in Mr. Fisher. I am
looking forward to seeing Jimmer and the Cougars play the Aztecs on the 26th,
probably for the MWC reg. season championship! Win or lose I am sure the Cougars
have nothing but respect for their coach and their team and visa versa;
Don't get me wrong, I respect Coach Fisher and the job he has done at San Diego
State. But calling the Aztecs a "national powerhouse" is premature at
best.Powerhouse programs:Didn't get their first-ever Top
25 ranking in 2011.Historically don't have trouble selling out a
12,000 seat arena.Have more than six NCAA tournament appearances,
and aren't still looking for their first win in The Big Dance.Don't
rely on building a team from transfers from second tier basketball schools like
Pepperdine and Santa Clara. And most importantly, powerhouse programs
are sustainable. This story and title may play in San Diego and the
Mountain West, but until SDSU wins in March they will be appropriately veiwed
with skepticism by most of the country.I would love to see the
Aztecs go deep in the tournament and become a perennial Top 25 team. Maybe this
is the first of many outstanding Aztec teams. Let's see what happens in March,
and watch how SDSU trends over the next few years. That will determine if they
are a powerhouse or a one-hit wonder.
Wow! one great year in 12 and you are calling SDSU a national powerhouse
program. REALLY. National powerhouse programs are called that, because they have
demonstrated to be very good over a number of years. SDSU has just begun to play
good basketball, they may become a powerhouse but it will take several years of
consistency of winning on a national stage, not just this year.
@ Hedgehog. SDSU wasn't the best team at the Marriot Center last time they
played the Cougars, were they? Sorry, pal wrong again! But don't give up, even a
broken clock is right twice a day!
I can believe that Fisher is the most popular guy in town and he deserves it.
He has obviously done a great job.Jimmer, on the other hand probably
would not receive the save affection in San Diego.Go Jimmer!
Mountain Man,Let's talk next week.Even the most
delusional tds fan know's that SDST is the most athletic/complete team in the
I'll agree with Hedge that Fisher is one of the best, and one of the
classiest.Dutchman thinks Boylen is Fisher II.Interesting to hear his comment on this story.
SDSU good but there's a reason BYU beat them and there's a reason BYU has the #1
RPI in the NATION.
What a national powerhouse and yet never won a ncaa tourney game? Please, if
that's all it takes...
BYU and Utah fans on here are the worst. Fisher has done a great job in San
Diego. One of the worst basketball teams year in and year out in the West. Now
they are up near the top of the Mountain every year. Why can't you
all just enjoy the article and admit that he has done an awesome job in San
SDSU clearly has a team this year, whether it is talent, chemistry, whatever,
they've figured out how to win. But I agree that it is premature to christen
them a national powerhouse. "Even the most delusional [Ute]
fan" would have to admit that BYU's consistent appearance in the top 25
over 30 years is more likely "national powerhouse" material than
SDSU's present couple of pretty good years.
CJ:He's done an awesome job at SDSU.
Let us limit the scope of the discussion to what the man has done. He has taken
a historically bad team and made it into a top ten team.Congratulations!
BYU will rightly be an underdog at SDSU in the rematch. Here is hoping BYU
pulls an upset. I was at the game last year when BYU pulled out a
close one with a raucus crowd and a bunch of unruely sudo missionaries!Great to see BYU silence them at the end.
hedge; You would be an expert on delusional. The reality is that BYU beat SDSU
by double digits and that BYU has some excellent athletes. If SDSU has the best
athletes and the best coach they why did they lose to BYU? Because BYU is a
better TEAM. That usually is credited to superior coaching. The SDSU team will
be struggling next year as they graduate everyone over 6'7" and they lose
two of their top two scorers. If Kwahni is dumb enough to declare, they will be
that much worse. BYU on the other hand has all their big men back and two great
guards coming in to replace the dynamic duo. Dream on hedgie, your obsession is
quite humorous. Maybe Utah could get Fischer to come to SLC.
Let's not forget a key part of that story - SDSU has won 20 games or more for
the last SEVEN straight years. The program has basically been trending upward
that entire time. Fisher is a great coach and a classy guy, and he
has turned San Diego State basketball from a basement dweller into the owners of
the penthouse suite. I don't care what team you root for you have
to respect 26-1 and a team as athletic, talented, and well coached as the Aztecs
As an SDSU alumn who turned Cougar Blue after my daughter & son
attended/graduated from the Y, I believe I offer some interesting insight. Yes,
Hedgehog, I finally agree with you on something. As much as I love my adopted-in
Cougs & Coach Rose, I do believe Fisher is the best coach in the MWC. He's
done wonders to turn the program around. However, with that being sad, SDSU has,
bar none, the worse fans in the MWC. After attending the 2009 BYU football game
in SD, I've made a promise never to spend another dime at an SDSU sporting
event. I will gladly watch the game on TV. I cannot wait for the 2/26 nationally
televised game, because I cannot wait for my cougs to put a sock in the mouths
of the fans, sports writers & local talk-sports who are giving my cougs no
chance! They view my cougs nothing more than a "1-trick pony." Emery,
Davies, Hartsock & Abouo MUST come ready to play. If they don't and it's
left to Jimmer, SDSU's team is too deep and they will dominate. Let's go,
Pts per game: BYU 8th (83.1) SDSU 93rd (72.4)Rebs per game: BYU 17th
(39.4) SDSU 80th (36.9)Ast per game: BYU 43rd (15.2) SDSU 114th (13.8)FG%: BYU 76th (.458) SDSU 27th (.475)Stats dont lie. Keys to a BYU win on the 26th:-Keep Kawhi from gathering a bundle
of offensive Rebs.-Dont let DJ Gay get hot from outside.-Jackson will have to score around 15-18 with a few steals and fast breaks.-Jimmer needs to get his average. Its not like this is rocket
science, play a good solid bball game against a very good opponent at their
house and this should still be a win.
12 years huh. Hey Yewt fans, want to give your next coach 12 years? I
think SDS is a really good team this year, but they are not dominant - win most
games (other than cupcakes like Utah) by single digit points. Don't blow people
out like BYU has often done. I agree SDS will be and should be favored at home
against BYU. But BYU backs down to no one, and it will be a tough game,
close. Last Point: Fisher is absolutely NOT the best coach in the
league. Rose is. Check out the records - both total conf play and head to
head. Some people like to ignore the facts to opine.
As an avid BYU fan, I have the fans in the Mountain West should be busy hyping
up every team in the conference. When BYU beat SDS, the BYU fans were yelling
"over rated." Sorry that's a dumb way to elevate your own team. The
worse the team is you beat, the less the win means. SDS and BYU are both great
teams who will probably protect their home court and hopefully bash everyone
else. I hope whoever loses next week, it's their only loss from then until the
championship game of the MWC tournament. And let's hope that game is won by one
point. Let's keep both teams high in the polls, in respect for each other, that
both do major damage in March Madness.
Still Blue after all these years - I've got a question for you.How
many National Championships does Rose have on his resume? How many Championship
Games has he coached in?Coach Fisher has a National Championship on
his resume, and led his team to TWO additional Championship Games after that.
He took a horrible San Diego State team and after rebuilding the program he has
brought them 7 straight 20+ win seasons. That's amazing. That's coaching.
Wow, a lot of haters on this board. I'm guessing you are the ones who don't
follow college bball or just started this year with Jimmer-mania. To those pointing out Fisher made mistakes at Michigan, he has admitted this.
He was not on top of things as closely as he should have been. But that does
not take away from the NC he brought Michigan, guiding a team that was not
expected to win through the tourney, win after win, in one of the greatest
postseason streaks after its head coach accepted another job. To
those whining about just one season, check out SDSU's record since Fisher
arrived. It's not just this season but he's brought consistent success (I'm
guessing most don't realize this because they just turned on the tv after
hearing about Jimmer).I agree they aren't a national powerhouse but
give the man credit for turning around a team that was abysmal, similar to Rose.
If anything we should cheer for these mid-major/west coast teams to do well
except when playing BYU.
Hey Hedgehog,I think we've got scoreboard on this one.Love, Cougar nation
