Wow - how often do you see a non-BCS team lose a game and still advance in the
Top 10?It's nice to have some national respect!
Apparently the demise of BYU basketball was exaggerated.
What played into byu's favor is the other teams around them lost as well. duke
gets respect, they got hammered and are still at #5, notre dame got respect cuz
they jumped 6 spots from 14 to 8 (in the coaches poll).
Well done Aggies. Nice to have some national love.Go Big Blue!!!
BYU got lucky because every top ten team lost except Pitt, Kansas and OSU and
those three all barely won against weak teams. It was a wild weak for the top
25. I'm glad the Aggies and Cougars are getting the respect they
This is probably as high as byu will be ranked all season (unless they go on
some crazy run come tourney time). It's not because they couldn't get ranked
higher but it's because the MWC is not that great. Same with the Aggies. Top 15
is probably where the Aggies will top out if they win out the conference plus
the WAC tourney.
What I can't figure it out - how did Syracuse stayed in top 25 after losing 4
straight? And of couse Notre Dame is ND - woopie doo, wait, maybe we will face
ND and see another length of Jimmer lookalike Danny Ainge replay. That would be
Keep on winning and keep on climbing the polls Aggies. Can't wait for this
week's ESPN against Nevada. It is going to be epic! Go State!!!
Yeah, loads of top 15 teams lost this week. No one was really moving up. BYU
beat a top 5 team...that helped them stay in the top 10. Their only true tough
game should be at SDSU. BYU has played all their tough road games already. The MWC is not that great? Do you know anything about basketball? SDSU
is ranked, UNLV has been ranked or getting votes all year. CSU is great, UNM is
not as good as last year, but still good, and AFA has a winning record. Compare
that to other mid-majors...you won't find that. They have 2 teams in the top
10. The WAC has one team in the top 25 and none getting votes.
These polls are a "COMPLETE" farce! BYU gets hammered and still gains
a spot and the team doing the hammering is "nothing" this year. Wow!
Vince, Your opinion is a "COMPLETE" joke inspired by jealousy,
obsession and blind hate. Too bad you don't have a vote. The people who count
and whose opinions matter say that BYU is the #8 team in the country and USU is
21st. The polls are as fair as they can be without all of these teams playing
each other. These two teams are really alot of fun to watch this year. I
wish the Aggies were on TV more. Go Aggies, Go Cougars, and to the jealous
haters; GO AWAY!
@ Vince,As others have already stated, BYU's win over previously
ranked #4 and the fact that a lot of other top 10 teams lost, helped BYU move up
one spot. BYU could say the same thing you just did since SDSU is still ranked
ahead of them. As emberassing as this sounds, UNM doesn't even have a winning
conference record so ya, they are "nothing" YET this year. Maybe a
few more quality wins especially on the road would help their case. I think
they have a lot of talent but they are no where close to a top 25 team. Sorry.
Apparently the MWC and USU have all earned some respect....great for the state
and region. As a BYU fan I am still pulling for Utah to continue the
good progress too...I just can't understand why so many partisans can't enjoy
the success of all and not take it so personally when a favorite struggles or
loses.....Reality is, you win some / you lose some. Life goes
Vince: The pollsters recognized the UNM loss for what it was, a trap game in a
hard-to-play arena after a physically and mentally exhausting win over a top 5
team. UNM is mediocre, but they were able to get on a pretty good run to end the
game. They have some good players, and can get much better in the
next few years. It actually helps UNM when they are actually good next year for
BYU to stay well ranked this year.
Don't need to hang your head about losing in the Pit.How about Duke
losing to a nobody? Stuff happens.
re: Striker Yes it is true...the mountain west is not that great! They can be
ranked as high as 7 or 8 but if you really know anything about basketball you
would know that in the NCAA tournament the BIG teams across the country usually
beat the MW teams. I don't care if Jimmer is on the team or not, they get beat
by the better teams. It happens every year!
No complaints here. Actually moving up a spot was something I wasn't expecting
but in reality the rankings are not as significant as they are sometimes made to
be...almost 50% of the top 25 had losses this week with 7 of the top 10 being
part of that group. Syracuse still remained in the top 10 despite 3 straight
losses but now with their 4th they finally dropped out. The seedings will still
be the ultimate measurement and right now Both San Diego State and BYU are still
looking at least as #3's at this point in time.Scoobie
Just as there was no shame for SDSU to lose at BYU, there is no shame in losing
at the Pit. The pollsters recongize that and voted accordingly.
@ Tom in CalI agree UNM is still the reigning MWC champions for the last
two years and they've got a top notch Coach. This year is not over for the
Lobos yet...they may still be a spoiler and pull off some other big games
My bad Pitt lost too. Sometimes I miss those Sunday upsets. Insane week for the
top 25. That's why college basketball is so fun and if this week means anything
it's that the tournament in March will be AMAZING!I can't wait. Go
Cougars and Aggies!
This shows some nice respect for both BYU and SDSU. I predicted we would be
12-15. It also shows that people know how hard it is to play at the Pit even in
a down year. The Jimmer craze probably helped too as BYU is everywhere in the
media. It also helps that the pollsters recognize BYU has beaten 3
teams currently ranked (SDSU, Arizona and USU) and CSU, St Mary's and UNLV also
got votes.Even with the losses this is setting up for the game at
SDSU to be even bigger! This should help the Cougs get their heads back quick
following the NM loss. Still a ton to achieve this season!Go Cougs!
Just what it New Mexico's record at home? Any guesses? It's 11-1!!!!!!!!! The
only loss at home this year is to SDSU.
Not all losses are equal, that's for sure, and the votes know it.It
seems the 1997-98 Utes come up a lot lately. They lost at Wyoming and ...(wait
for it)...in the Pit.
@Haweye 79The BCS only refers to Football.Not
Basketball. don't fall into their trap. There is no such thing as,
non-aq, mid-major, big 6, non equity, teams in basketball.Basketball
is a diffferent animal. The Big East is a so called bcs league and
yet many of their teams don't play football.
VinceThe only "jokes" I see are blind haters who think
their own biased opinions are more valid than a concensus of voters from across

hedgehog - ask your groundhog if he can see his shadow. If he does see his
shadow then go back to sleep and if he doesn't, then go try run across the
street and get squashed! Go away or go see Cry Baby (or Bitter).
3 more "loses"?Poor hedgehog; still working feverously to
finish that 7th grade English class before his mom cuts off his television
privileges. We've "marked it down", and since hedgehog has
become BYU's good luck charm with his predictions, we now know that...BYU is a lock to win their next three!
hedgehog will continue to make hundreds and hundreds of inane predictions about
BYU and will still be wrong.MARK IT DOWN
Wedgie's spelling is a bad as Urban Legand's who could not even spell BYU. Her
spelling and grammar are so bad that her last post is as empty as her arguments.
I thought everybody hated the Cougars. If so, how can we lose and move up in
the polls? I am still upset that the officials didn't call more fouls in the
New Mexico game against New Mexico. They sure seemed to be disrespectful to our
team (especially to Jummer).
I wonder how high BYU would of been ranked had they held the lead in the Pit?
Maybe as high as 4? For sure above SDSU. The nice thing about SDSU
staying above BYU is that it makes the rematch in San Diego that much more
interesting. BYU can still get a No. 2 seed if it wins out and does
well in the UNLV invitational. However, sometimes it is better to be a No. 4
seed and stay in the West than a No. 2 or 3 seed and go East or South. Good luck BYU. Enjoy the ride.
Utah State. BYU. Two D-1 basketball powers in this state. Paging Majerus.
hedgehog "3 more conference loses coming jimer and fill ins.
MARK IT DOWN"I have it marked down right next to your CST and
UNLV and SDSU losses predictions. Thanks!HaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHa
Tough game on Saturday for BYU. To follow a very emotional game against SDSU
with a game in the Pit is difficult.I don't feel the Aggies are the
dominant team of the past few years, but they keep pulling off wins and doing it
as a team. The Bracket Buster game will be interesting.Go Ags!
Hedge, do you mind if before I "mark it down", I watch the games? Thanks, bro...
Lehi, you are correct. The Aggies are not very dominant this year. They should
be, however. The one thing they have this year is several players that can
have their A game going when one person or two aren't producing. This must make
all the coaches pull their hair out trying to figure out how to beat the Aggies.
I don't think the Y is a top 10 school but then again I don't think the Aggies
are a top 25 school either. The polsters have to recognize wins vs loses and
both teams have won several games. Aggies however have won the games they are
suppose to vs the Y loosing to teams they should have beaten.By the way,
Wayne Estes was the best
Mildred,The only thing more classless than a typical classless ute
is a typical classless ute pretending to be a byu fan.Grow up bud
You'll have to pardon hedgehog's brother Mildred; he's as confused as his sister
Wow. I am surprised. I do think number 9 is a good place for the Cougars.
They really need to develop more players into scoring threats. Come on Emery.
Come on Hartsock. Come on Collingsworth, Come on Rogers and Abouo. Put the
ball in the hoop.
Nice to see the basketball powerhouses in the state getting some respect.Jimmermania is just getting started.BYU and ESPN are a match
made in heaven.I hope the rest of the state is ready for it because
you are going to see BYU hyped on ESPN for the next several years. You will be
hearing and seeing them on a weekly basis.Tom Holmoe and the boys at
BYU have done an excellent job of getting the exposure that the MWC has done
such a poor job of getting.Great job and Go Cougars!
VinceWhen the Cougars lose it's news. When the utes win it makes
headlines. Get over it.
Bluto:I completely agree. It really bothers me when I hear the word
"mid-major" thrown around in basketball. Being in a BCS conference has
everything to do with football and nothing to do with basketball.
Jimmy James -- Basketball is why the word mid-major was invented. Football is
BCS and non-BCS. Basketball is major conference, mid-major or a guaranteed one
bid league. I agree that I don't like the BCS vernacular used in basketball
because it have absolutely nothing to do with anything. But mid-major is an
appropriate term for conferences that generally struggle to get numerous bids to
the tournament every year or conferences where you have to really shine to make
the tournament. Unlike some major conferences where you can go .500 in leauge
and still make the tournament.
Re: UU32To add to your point, the MWC is no longer (or shouldn't be)
considered a mid-major. They're rated the #4 conference this year and will get
multiple NCAA tourney bids, just like last year and in previous years. I think a
lot of basketball fans around the country erroneously still consider the MWC a
mid-major conference but the powers that be don't. Take the fact that not one
MWC team is involved in this year's Bracket Buster and haven't been for a few
UU32I agree that the BCS/non-BCS label is out of place with every
sport except football. As far as major, mid-major basketball
conferences, your take is generally correct, but there are vast fluctuations
from year to year with the strength of conferences. The MWC has been stronger in
recent years than some of the "major" conferences, including the PAC
10, as shown by the number of NCAA bids and conference RPI rankings. And, there are some programs within the so-called mid-major conferences that
have transcended the mid-major label of their respective conference and are
usually strong enough to get invited to big dance even if they don't win their
conference tournament/championship - BYU and Utah State are two such programs.
We can pat each other on the back about our schools moving up in the polls and
getting invited to the big dance. Real lasting respect wont come until these
teams are able to make a run in the NCAA tournament. This season I
would put the top six schools from the Big 12 ahead of the Y and USU. And I
would put Texas and Kansas light years ahead of all other teams in the
country.That's the difference between a major and a mid-major
The MWC is so bad that ESPN and CBS have them ranked as the number 5 conference
in the land. They are ahead of the PAC 10 and SEC. The MWC is getting respect,
BYU and San Diego St are both getting respect. The may not be the 6 to 9th best
teams in the land we will find out in March but if the continue to win they both
have a chance to be 2-3 seeds.
Naked Truth -- agree, at least until next year when BYU and Utah (not they my
Utes are adding anything this year) leave the MWC. But in the Big
East, Big 12, the Big 10 or the SEC you can go .500 in your conference and still
have a shot at the NCAA's. In the MWC you go .500 in the conference and its
tough to make the NIT/CBI. Same could be said for the WCC or WAC. As a mid-major
you need to dominate your league - because, generally speaking, the leagues are
not as good top to bottom. The major conferences have the depth that
separates them from the mid-majors. Mid-majors need to play quality out of
conference schedules in order to get noticed. The Big East can afford to play a
very weak out of conference schedule to pad its record - then go .500 in
conference and still have a shot at the big dance. It happens every year. BYU has not "transcended the mid-major label" enough to be
granted a NCAA birth with only 20 wins. You see some major conference teams get
in with 18 wins.
