Before Chris B decides to spout off, isn't Chris' logic that the honor code keeps BYU from becoming or having true athletes?

I wonder how he feels about the good young men and women that attend the U that espouse the same standards without an adopted "Honor Code?"

Is Danny Ainge's 2467 point BYU career scoring record now in jeopardy?

Jimmer has 2107 points and needs 361 points to break Ainge's record.

At his current average of 27.4 ppg, it would take 14 games.

With 10 regular season conference games and 3 games in the MWC tournament, Jimmer is on pace to break the record in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

If Jimmer averages what he's been scoring since MWC play began, 35.7 ppg, he'd break the record in the opening game of the MWC tournament.

It's even possible that Ainge's record could fall in Jimmer's final game at the Marriott Center versus Wyoming.

At any rate, it's an interesting mark to keep track of as BYU strives to win the MWC regular and tournament championships and positions itself for a deep run in the NCAA tournament.

    One game at a time.

Good luck in the Pit on Saturday Cougs.

I'm sure Jimmer and company will be looking for a little redemption after falling just short in both games versus New Mexico last year.

This time the Lobos will be facing a healthy Jimmer!

As diehard Ute fan Big_Ben suggested, let's discuss BYU basketball and Jimmer.

It's time to drop kick the Utah trolls like hedgehog, utahcountyute and Chris B off the BYU blogs.

During football season, they should have spending all of their time talking about the Utes instead of hanging out on the blog of a team that had a losing record for most of the season.

During basketball season, especially during this season, the Utes are a meer afterthought and the only intrigue the Utes should hold for BYU fans is whether they'll get Jimmered by 50 points in the Marriott Center next month!

Jiggy is a good playing, but calling the Utes an average team is stretching things a bit.

BYU is succeeding because they have an unselfish team where everyone is willing to fill their role. Even when Jimmer is having a great night, they don't win without the defensive stops, the rebounding, and the screens. Emery or Davies could average 20 if they took 12 more shots a game, but they are willing to let their best offensive player get those shots while they fill other roles so that they can succeed as a team. Hats off to a team that is fun to watch and easy to cheer for. They really show what teamwork is all about.

Hey crowntown1 from corona. You are dilusional! Jimmer is a special player that only comes along once in a great while. He is a rockstar right now and the country can't get enough of him. The only thing that is holding him back is the MTN West TV contract and lack of exposure. ESPN is doing their best to showcase him and we east coast fans are loving it. Jump on board the JIMMER train and enjoy the ride!!!!

I agree with Coach Rose. A team wins. That said, Jimmer is a special player. Let's just enjoy what he does for the remainder of his college career. Further, I hope the Cougs continue their run on a great season. All teams in the conference and the West benefit from this. Go Cougs!

Did you not read what I wrote? I said good player. Yeah and he is the only player on BYU's roster name I know. I don't think the team is all that great. Wasn't Jimmer on last years team that lost in he first rnd of the tourney?

Both BYU and Utah fans should enjoy this ride while it lasts. Rarely does a player come along that gets this kind of attention (especially at BYU). I know a lot of BYU fans that enjoyed watching Bogut, Doleac, Van Horn, Miller, and Grant. I lived in Austin when Durrant was doing his thing at Texas. Its just nice to have a local kid play in a way that he gets on Sportscenter every week...even if he doesnn't play for the team I root for.

You can either accept reality that BYU is a legitimate Top 10 team and Jimmer is one of the leading candidates for national Player of the Year,

or you must live with the fact that U got torched by 104 points by an "average" team and lit up for 47 points by a player whom you only consider "good".

Either way, the Utes suffered a 25-point beatdown on their homecourt and their return visit to the Marriott Center could be MUCH worse.

  • Idaho Coug Meridian, Idaho
    Jan. 28, 2011 8:53 a.m.

The nice thing about all the attention Jimmer is getting is that he performs better the hotter the spotlight is. Some players would choke under all this scrutiny but Jimmer will just continue to thrive.

This also benefits the BYU program as a whole as well as individual players. I think Emery is a player who could have a nice oversees career and this attention will only help that (if he can get out of his shooting slump) and next year's kids like Davies will have a little of their own hype going into next season due to all this exposure.

Saturday is a huge challenge but I think this particular team will excell as the pressure builds.

    Go Cougs!!

    Commontater,

"I wonder how he feels about the good young men and women that attend the U that espouse the same standards without an adopted "Honor Code?"

I'm happy to oblige: I think they are good men and women, just as you put it.

However, the U would not be successful(see 2 bcs win, invite to the big league, trips to final four, march madness championship....) if we only had "good men and women that espouse the same standards."

Did I ever say those at the U or ybu who live the "honor code" aren't good people?

    Nope.

I simply said you will never be a national presence while the honor code is in place, because you'll never be able to have a team that is amongst the nation's best with only Sunday School boys.

And please before you go all jimmer on me - jimmer has 1 NCAA win. And ybu has 1 NCAA win in 20 years. Know why? You ONLY have "good men and women who love the honor code."

That clear things up for ya bud?

I listened to an interview of the reporter who did the SI article on Jimmer and his brother.

One of the things that really impressed her was the fact that there isn't any resentment towards Jimmer by his teammates. She said that is pretty rare when you have one player who gets so much of the attention. I remember reading a book by Coach Wooden where he talked about having that struggle with his players when Lew Alcindor (Kareem) played for him.

I've been impressed all season by the unselfishness of the entire team. I also love listening to the post-game interviews with Jimmer. He reminds me of Detmer in that he deflects praise and points out and praises his teammates. (I also love that immediately after the game his thoughts were already focused in on New Mexico).

Good luck at the Pit boys! We'll be cheering for you! Go Cougars!

No, Jimmer was not on the same team that lost in the 1st round. He was on last year's team that lost in the 2nd round. You really don't seem to know enough to participate in this conversation. You sound like you are suffering from attention envy! What did your favorite team get beat by an unknown? Just because you don't know who the other players on BYU are doesn't mean that they aren't good. There are a lot of national observers that do know who the other players on BYU are and they are saying that the Cougars are really good. Get a clue before you say anything next time!

Gotta admire the tenacity with which the BYU haters cling to their feable attempts to ignore reality.

Here's just a little taste of what this "average" BYU team has accomplished so far this season:

    BYU(20-1)#9 AP, #9 Coaches, #1 RPI

    beat #25 Utah State(19-2) 78-72, WAC 1st place
    beat #24 Saint Mary's(18-3) 74-73, WCC 1st place
    beat #27 Arizona(17-4) 87-65, PAC 10 2nd place
    beat UTEP(17-4) 89-68, C-USA 1st place
    beat Vermont(15-5) 86-58, America East 2nd place
    beat at UNLV(16-5) 89-78, MWC 4th
    beat at CSU(14-6) 94-85, MWC 3rd
    beat #4 SDSU(20-1) 71-58, MWC 2nd

BYU's only loss, at UCLA(13-7) 79-86, with three of BYU's five starters hurt or out--Hartsock recovering from a concussion, Chris Collinsworth out, and Jackson was still nursing a micro-fracture in his leg.

Anyone claiming that BYU is just a one-man Jimmer Show simply doesn't understand the defense, rebounds, screens, blocks, steals, assists, etc. that the other players are contributing to make the Jimmer Show a success.

What you have written speaks volume of what you know, and don't know.

What "average" team is ranked 9th and just beat a 4th place team?

What "good" player is leading the nation in scoring and being projected as a first round pick?

Which team lost in the first round?

The fact that you don't know anyone's name on a top 10 team really means squat. It just shows you don't know.

Why comment to prove you don't know what you are commenting on?

What is the purpose of that?

    @ Chris B

Maybe you're right about BYU only have "good men and women" and "Sunday School boy", but I'd still rather cheer for BYU not necessarily because of their storied programs, but because of what they stand for and the success that they have had despite the Honor Code that you think hinders their success. It makes me smile when these choir boys blow out teams with "real athletes" like the utes. If only BYU had a real athlete that could drop 40+ points 3 out of the last 4 games and lead the nation in scoring.... if only. I guess I'll just have to watch the utes and their "real athletes" with their .500 record.

Come on fellow utes. Give this kid the respect he deserves. He is special. I admit I like when byu loses but I don't know how any sports fan can't enjoy watching jimmer. He is one of those special players who comes along very infrequently to schools like Utah and byu. I would love to see byu go deep in the tournament this year. Good luck cougs and go utes.

Wow Chris, there you go again on the honor code thing. Look, this is what you don't get. Life is about honor and integrity. No one will ever be judged on how many points that they score or rebounds or free throws. We will all be judged on the kind of person that we are. An honor code tends to help people excel at life, it gives standards to live by. It makes you a better person. Chris the Lord does not fly a BYU Flag or wear blue. But you know what he does?, when he looks at the hearts of many young people who struggle with life and its decisions and he understands that they are really trying to do whats right. He appreciates their effort and he smiles with love and kindness. It really is all about honor in your life Chris. Have you felt that love lately? Your attitude really worries me. It makes me sad.

    Fact checker for the haters:

BYU has three NCAA tournament wins in the last 20 years; or three wins in their last 10 NCAA tournaments. Still not great, but alot better than the "one win in the last 20 years" that the hateful ones on the hill are fond of citing incorrectly.

More importantly, BYU has one win, 3 conference champioinship, and four NCAA tournament appearances in the last five years (and counting), which is a vast improvement over the zero wins, one conference championship, and one NCAA tournament for the program formerly known as the Runnin' Utes.

This year BYU has others who can score and their ball movement is awsome as well as their defense. They will do well this year. They are a great and a well coached team. Hey, Hedgehog, when SDSU double and triple teamed Jimmer in the 2nd half, other players stepped up and BYU started to pull away. Jimmer proceeded to keep the pressure on SDSU by making three throws when he was fouled, which was SDSU's final option to try to make up the difference in the score. That didn't work either. Both tteams had great defense, but BYU's defense added to their offense, made the difference - they are a well balanced team. Did you read what their coach said about jimmer and the BYU Cougars. I quote, "BYU looks like a final four team". That is all that needs to be said. Over and out.

To the Jealous-of-Jimmer Homers, consider this possibility: NCAA selection committee, locked in a hotel room the second weekend of March, deciding where to put the Cougars with their "No Sunday Play" policy. Do you stick them with a relatively low seed (3,4 or 5) based on their poor performance in past years, or give them a #2 or even #1 seed (if their ranking in March justifies it) and the easiest possible path to the Final Four? Something tells me that the committee, noting the nation's obsession with Jimmer and his ability to put butts in seats and eyeballs on the TV, will give them a higher-than-usual ranking...what's good for Jimmer's Cougs is good for college basketball.

Clearly Jimmer is a special player. Jackson Emery is also decent as well as the Provo kids, Collingsworth, Collingsworth, and Davies. All of that group would get playing time at most D1 schools. Additionally, the current team plays well together. I hope they find some success in the NCAA tournament this year.

Next year, without Jimmer, they will just be a good team. The big problem for BYU is if Jimmer has an off night or is shut down. I am not sure the "collective" can overcome that against other teams in the tournament.

Every year is a new one crowntown and the truth is you don't know anything at all. You think you do and you are hoping BYU goes out in the 1st or 2nd round, but the reality is you don't know anything.

How many players from UCONN do you know other than the point guard? How many players from OSU do you know other than the center? Frankly you don't know any of the other players on any of the other teams other than the stars. Unless you are some ncaa b-ball junkie no one knows any of the secondary players, only the stars.

The fact is Jimmer is a superstar at this level and because of that he is known by everyone. It doesn't make the other players on the team mediocre, or bad, players. It just means Jimmer is so much better than litterally almost every other player in the entire country that he gets all the attention.

Just because billy bob from mudbucket alabama doesn't know anyone's name on the team other than Jimmers doesn't mean a thing. Most years he wouldn't no anyones name at all.

This is what clueless haters resort to when they have NOTHING else to bolster their weak arguments--making clueless predictions based on NOTHING but their own biased opinions.

EVERY year is different, but what we do know is BYU and SDSU are both a year older and more experienced, and in college basketball, that can make a HUGE difference in the tournament.

Jimmer never fully recovered from his bout with mononucleosis last season and he still averaged 22 points per game; not quite good enough to beat a very good #2 seed Kansas State team in the 2nd round.

This year, Jimmer is healthy and better conditioned and he's UNSTOPPABLE, averaging 27.4, the highest scoring average in the country.

Last year BYU was a 7th seed. This year, BYU could very easily be a #2 or #3 seed, which means BYU wouldn't face a #4 or high seed until the Sweet Sixteen. That's a huge advantage that everyone who really follows college basketball should know.

Doesn't matter what Byu's ranking is this year or whatever or how many ranked teams they beat Wait is UCLA ranked? doesn't matter BYU Basketball fans you have you know BYU will find a way to choke in the tourney just like you do every year. My argument is with the fans who praise Jimmer like he's god and that BYU basketball is a powerhouse that can't get by 2 rounds in the tourney? YES Jimmer is a goood player! I don't need snazzy stats or numbers to prove that one. And YES mark it down BYU will not make it past the first two rounds.

BYU has the number 1 RPI in NCAA basketball...right now! That means they have played a tough schedule and won!
