I really enjoyed this, Thank you very much. I too grew up with the Packers as
my hero's. I knew every name you brought up and what they did. I remember the
kickoff returns by Travis Williams. What a rocket! I was saddened to learn he
had become homeless and destitute for a while. I agree that
Professional sports have dulled my like for sports in general. I love high
school sports still because most do it for the love of the game. I preferred
college football until I saw the behaviors of the Miami teams and their behavior
back when they thought they owned the world. I saw a special on them recently
and they still claim BYU beat them by cheating. I get tired of the win
at all costs attitude. I loved Lavell Edwards because he always had the right
perspective and could talk to anyone without getting frustrated by their inane
questions or comments. I like what Bronco Mendenhall is doing too
because he sees the mission of church is more important than winning every
single game. His perspective on developing character, integrity and discipline
is more important than winning at all costs.
If the Rockmonster is not a fan of any sports team, then he clearly
"doesn't get it" and probably should follow Benson to culture column.
That was an unbelievable (and embarrassing) confession....
A lot of bad interviews. Perhaps the problem is the interviewer.
Comments here never fail to disappoint. A columnist gives some real insight into
his job, his life and how things are on the other side and all you have to
contribute to the discussion is nitpicking or actually not knowing the
difference between the writer and the Rockmonster. Why do people
think writers are fans? They are writers with a job: to tell what happened, to
capture the story. Do court reporters go cheer on the DA? The best writers don't
carry pom-poms and remain objective and analytical. I don't want fans (short for
fanatics) giving me information because I know it will always be filtered
through team-colored glasses. With a good reporter I know I stand a chance of
getting some truth.
