Dick Harmon: Before massive changes, the MWC is making noise

Only a Harmon article would stretch to find a provo highlight "In four seasons (2006-09), BYU was the only team in the country to win at least 10 games in football and 25 games in basketball each season." If you have read any of the other columns on ESPN or Sportline, byu is not mentioned, the accomplishments do not exist. Where does byu pull some of these stats from, they keep track of things people could care less about nor do other schools even record. How many times has Jimmer cut his hair during just MWC play? Bet somebody has that stat!

Hey bigutefan. Harmon got your attention. You read his article and you even commented on it.

Harmon writes to promote BYU. Why is that so bad. Doesn't Utah some some journalist that writes about the U? What's his name? Who cares?

    Go Cougars.

    bigutefan

Poor, jealous little brother; only a Utah fan would whine about an article simply because it shows that Utah doesn't measure up.

No other team in the MWC has even come close to matching BYU's combined record in football and basketball the last half decade.

10+ win seasons are a significant milestone in football.

25+ win seasons are a significant milestone in basketball.

Unfortunately for the Utes, Utah has seldom finished with 10+ wins in football, and the Utes don't even come close to 20+ wins in basketball anymore.

  • Joey K Sandy, UT
    Jan. 18, 2011 12:27 a.m.

    Harmon,
You failed to mention that the MWC has had one of its members win a Fiesta Bowl, in addition to the Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl. That is important for several million reasons. $$

  • Cali Coug Visalia, CA
    Jan. 18, 2011 12:31 a.m.

And only a Yewet fan would complain about an article written about the Conference, that included a truthful comment about BYU. Should we compare sport programs between the Y and the u? Per the MWC web site: Conference Championships from 2000 to November 2011 - BYU Men 20, utah men 11, and the women are tied at 20 each. Tournament Championships for the same time period: BYU Men 41, utah men 3. BYU women 50 and utah women 13.

This is why BYU get mentioned in all articles about the MWC. And the last meeting between a mens team was BYU 104, utah 79. The womens was BYU 68 and utah 50.

    Great Job Dick Harmon,

It does make you wonder what would have been. BYU, TCU, UTAH, BSU, WOW !!
    Football would have been Fun.

    Re: BYU Dude at 1243

It would have been a great conference, however, somebody up North got all excited about being the PAC 10's 7th invite to the Prom...utah sold their dignity for 30 pieces of silver.

  • mckay Dayton, OH
    Jan. 18, 2011 7:26 a.m.

BYU and Utah BOTH should have stayed in the MWC. Now the Utes will go off and flounder in the "PAC-12" just like the Arizona schools, and BYU will be devastated by football independence and playing in that other league over there. Ask Notre Dame how football independence is going for them, and they have A LOT better position than BYU in the scheme.

Both teams would have been better served to stay home and keep building success. Instead they decided to leave right at the moment they were achieving the big time.

They both sold out to the "old money" establishment they've been complaining about for years. Stupid.

  • Eddie Syracuse, UT
    Jan. 18, 2011 7:56 a.m.

I can't wait to see and hear all the chest pounding at the u in a couple of years. Every article about the pac 12 the ute fans will be boasting about even though their team is at or near the bottom. "Our conference this", and "Our conference that". But in the footnote will be "utes haven't done much since they joined the conference of champions".

  • Flashback Kearns, UT
    Jan. 18, 2011 8:03 a.m.

The MWC could have been the most powerful conference in the United States in all sports. Way better than the PAC 10 and other BCS conferences. In one or two years with BYU, Utah, TCU, and Boise State, the MWC would have broken the glass ceiling.

But trust the Yewts to chase the money instead of staying put and forcing the BCS out of business. May the Yewts never rise past 5th place in the PAC 12 for their stupid indisgression.

The whole blame for this mess lies with the MWC Commissioner. He should have been fired after arranging that stupid TV contract that caused Utah to bolt.

  • Esquire Springville, UT
    Jan. 18, 2011 8:07 a.m.

The conference is imploding just as it is becoming prominent. All for chasing BCS money, led by Utah, and the conference's silliness on broadcasting rights. Oh well, the love of money is their undoing.

  • RaininTime Orem, UT
    Jan. 18, 2011 8:08 a.m.

The main idea of the article was to shed some light on how the MWC, as we now know it, will change and its big three TCU, Utah and BYU will be moving on.

The article wasn't attempting in any way to compare or contrast BYU and Utah. However, when an insecure fan decides to insert his/her insecurities about their own team into the discussion, it becomes an exercise in flawed logic.

Hence, taking a sentence out of context, which leads to defending the sentence by comparing schools, which leads to finger pointing and then some religious poke, which is almost always followed by a counter jab about the intelligence of the initial commentator.

In conclusion, the main idea of a Dick Harmon article is usually lost in translation.

  • Y4LYFE Lubbock, TX

BYU will take their success to the WCC, less competitive? Yes, but a normal year for the mwc is similar to the WCC who usually has 2 top 25 programs, so I don't know why ute "fans" think it's a funny move. BYU will be on National TV-EVERY WEEK, in our 2 biggest sports.

That splash being made by the mwc will be splash-less come July 1.

    GO BYU

I'll give you cewgs this much: There are no more ardent defenders of the indefensible than supporters of the tds. The bottom line, though, as bigutefan has pointed out, is that you struggle to find some fairly meaningless stats to compensate for a lack of, oh, I don't know--BCS bowls, No. 1 draft picks, being invited to join an elite conference (now you don't even have a mid-level conference association), etc.

Yes, you will have your own TV deal next year. Good for you. But, no one outside of you supposed 'fan-base' will be watching. Good luck with that.

Again Cougar Nation - why read those trolls comments and make remark about them.

Trolls, when you read Dick Harmons he will get credits and you guys are doing a good job and same extra credit when you trolls do comments on him.

Cougar nation - when you open the comment section - DON'T READ THOSE TROLLS or write back. Just give Dick Harmons a good pat in the back.

It's funny how the sentence before Harmon wrote "In four seasons (2006-09), BYU was the only team in the country to win at least 10 games in football and 25 games in basketball each season", Dick noted Utah's two #1 draft picks (even though one of them turned out to be a bust), but our insecure little friend on the hill only noticed the BYU accolade.

Of course, BYU's accomplishment is something Utah has never even come close to accomplishing, so I can why it would irrate our little brother.

  • Ernest T. Bass Bountiful, UT
    Jan. 18, 2011 9:13 a.m.

Don't forget about the Fiesta Bowl, Mr. Harmon.
So a couger says the love of money will be Utah's undoing?
Name one non-AQ school who wouldn't join the PAC. Even CU jumped from an AQ league to join. Byu's own love of money is making them go independent which is a huge gamble. 8 wins against the Idaho States of the world is going to make them LESS legitimate, not more.
byu will never make a BCS bowl as an independent, but they might as a member of the MWC.
Also, this is their best basketball team in their history and they still won't make it past the sweet 16, then it will be back to one tourny every 4 years with a 2nd round game once every 25 years.

  • Swoop Salt Lake City, UT
    Jan. 18, 2011 9:31 a.m.

There are no more ardent defenders of made up accomplishments than Utah fans.

Utah fans bragged incessantly about a quirky bowl winning streak, but belittle a true accomplishment like four straight 10+ win/Top 25 seasons, coupled with four straight 25+ win/NCAA tournament seasons.

Utah fans rightly minimized the significance of BYU's bowl win over UTEP, then, hypocritically beat their chests about a nine-bowl winning streak, which included mostly unranked, mediocre opponents.

For all of their bluster, Utah has NEVER in their entire history managed to string even two 10+ win football/25+ win basketball seasons together.

  • fresnogirl Fresno, CA
    Jan. 18, 2011 9:56 a.m.

The MWC could have been amazing. I don't think anyone would argue with that. What killed the MWC wasn't the Utes leaving or BYU leaving. It was the inflexible nature of the really bad TV coverage. Why would either team stay once they had a better option?

Look on the bright side, Utes and Cougs, we may have suffered with the bad TV coverage for years, but at least we didn't have to pay the WAC almost a million dollars to do so! Fresno State and Reno get to do that for the privilege of NOT getting to watch games in what is the WAC 2.0.

  • Dutchman Murray, UT
    Jan. 18, 2011 10:56 a.m.

    Mckay,

Why don't you and others like you who continually bring up the Arizona and Arizona St comparison go ask those schools if they will ever give up and leave the PAC 12? Also, ask them if they regret leaving the WAC for the PAC 10. The answer is obviously No! BYU has been searching for a AQ conference to land in for a long time and when they couldn't find one they went independent.

  • Ufan Salt Lake City, UT
    Jan. 18, 2011 11:00 a.m.

Craig Thompson killed the MWC with his bungled television contract.

Boise State, Fresno State, and Nevada would have been better off staying on ESPN in the WAC.

  • The Silent Lurker Cottonwood Heights, UT

Why can't both the Utes and Cougars fans be happy for each other? Why must everything be a comparison? Each have chosen their own path, good for them both.

  • Cougar Cindy Salt Lake City, UT
    Jan. 18, 2011 12:01 p.m.

Why worry about what might have been? There was no way the Utes were going to turn down the Pac-10 invite. No way! BYU had been bucking in the harness of the mtn. for years before that happened, and there was no way BYU would continue to endure that with Utah gone, and TCU clearly going.

We can lament what MIGHT have been, but not without remembering why it ISN'T. Can't wait to see what IS about to happen. My opinion? The BCS's days are numbered anyway. The tide has turned. Maybe a few years, maybe a few more, but a playoff will come.

    GO INDEPENDENT COUGARS!

    @ Chris: ARE YOU SERIOUS???

"Yes, you will have your own TV deal next year. But, no one outside of you supposed 'fan-base' will be watching. Good luck with that."

Are you really going to try and ignore which of all the MWC games have consistently received the highest views from fans ever since the MWC was formed?? (Hint: it wasn't the UTE games).

And which of all the MWC teams has repeatedly garnered the greatest fan support on their Conference road games?? (Want another HINT? I didn't think so.)

I've always cheered for Utah at their games in the past. But it's because of your and wedgies' and bigutefan's continual drivel and inanely prejudicial comments against the successes of BYU's proven programs (see Cali Coug's, Truth Machine's and even Swoop's comments above that are based on actual FACTS instead of your examples of prejudice and nonsense) that I was actually GLAD to see the blowout at the Huntsman last week. Congratulations, gentlemen--- It was you guys that turned me against them having a good showing.

Think about it. And then maybe you could grow up a little?

    Ufan:

You are absolutely correct about the WAC members now joining the MWC. Had Utah, TCU, and BYU stayed it would be an awesome conference with the top teams of both conferences. But now they (the Wac guys moving into the MWC) will languish in relative oblivion not being watched on ESPN.

    @ ernie bass:

There's quite a difference between seeing the vast good that additional funds could do to improve an athletic program and its facilities, and just "Byu's own love of money", don't you think? That was the U's chief motivating factor in moving. I'm sure the Aggies would like to do the same thing, if they could. So what's your thinking in your attempt at denigrating only BYU's move to try and bring in more funds to help improve their program??

Or shouldn't we be asking about your 'thinking' capabilities?

Ha ha, Chris B., I've been waiting to pounce on you and catch you in a bold faced lie. I've had to wait around for a long time, because you are just so good! (I'm sorry, but I don't know how to type sarcastically.) But now you've blown it. Do you really expect us to believe that *you* won't be watching BYU anymore? HA!

BYU's fan base *is* national, and they have plenty of anti-fans to boot!

  • Tundra Salt Lake City, UT
    Jan. 18, 2011 1:00 p.m.

I was really impressed when I read Dick Harmon's observations relating to the Cougars' recent success in the nation's two major athletic programs overall. Personally, I would have been equally impressed had it been the Utes, or the Aggies that had accomplished this also. When any of our 3 larger University programs do well on a national scale, I think it's a nice boost for all of us in our little state.

So I was quite surprised to see the for-some-reason highly negatively-charged comments from a few of the readers here trying to decry and belittle something no other school IN THE ENTIRE NATION has been able to accomplish recently but one of our own.

What for? Can't you take pride in the accomplishments of ANY of the schools in our state when they can achieve something that shows the rest of the nation that we have something we can be proud of? Why do you have the need to make it into a put-down unless it's just your own school that's done something? I don't get it.

Please. Think about it a little bit.

    Thanks.

Great stuff Harmon, The MWC is great example of mismanagement and arrogance. It's a great business model of what not to do. Nobody would have bolted if they got paid for what they put in. All things can't be equal when half the league doens't pull it's own weight.

It's refreshing to read her comments. I hope it may encourage some civility between opponents.

I am both a BYU and Utah fan. I'm think this is because I've spent considerable time at both universities academically. As I've said before, I think both are excellent universities, but very different.

    Dick,
This is one of your better pieces. It is funny how the uneducated view from the so-called "major 6" conferences will now see Utah and TCU as power teams just because of who they affiliate with.

It is the same kind of backward thinking that allows Gucci and Versace to succeed. A Louis Vaton Bag does not make a woman more intelligent and a Ferrari sports car does not make a man any brighter, but these fools still believe it does.

For the MWC teams that are bailing, are doing it for the green, which is an appropriate reason, given that it still allows good competition.

If someone offerred to buy your car for 1,000,000 versus 20,000 -- which offer would you accept, all else being equal?

To my fellow Cougar fans who are upset at Utah for leaving, thus breaking up the possibility of a super conference, don't be too hard on them. Here is why:

    1) They wanted to leave the MWC television contract. It is entirely possible that a better contract coulod have been negotiated once the nation realized what a powerful conference it is, but with Thompson in power, don't count on it.

    2) I have heard from reliable sources that BYU's decision to go independent was made 4 or 5 years ago. The only question was the timing of it. Had Utah not broken the conference up, BYU eventually would have.

As far as Chris B's comment about nobody watching BYU sports except BYU fans, guess what? Even if ONLY BYU fans watched the games, there would be more people watching than those watching Utah games. Besides, you know that there are plenty of BYU haters who will tune in just to cheer against BYU (I'm sure you do).

  • SportsFan Orem, UT
    Jan. 18, 2011 5:51 p.m.

The horrible MWC television contract is the principle reason for breaking up the MWC. Craig Thompson thought that sabbotaging BYU's WAC deal would force BYU to stay in the MWC.

He thought that the MWC and the MTN were better than nothing.

    His miscalculated.

As it turns out, BYU decided that nothing (independence) is better than the MWC, but ESPN and BYUtv are a thousand times better than the MTN.

Bronco fans are in for a rough ride when they see what CT has saddled them with.

As said by several others this decision to go independent was not contingent on the Utes leaving. It was simply accelerated!

Thanks to ESPN, BYU's forward vision on that HDTV studio, etc. it's going to work!

Who would have imagined all of this happening and the turn around from 4 in a row losses to a winning season, a bowl invitation, a bowl win and now this basketball season. 2011 is looking good!

    1. It's no secret that MWC officials have reneged on TV coverage promises made to BYU. 2. There is no significant conference in the country that plays it's basketball tourney on a member school's home court. 3. HD TV signals have finally crept onto the "Mountain" telecasts.
