Best BCS-buster game yet, Congrats Frogs!! Wisconsin was great, but you were better!

I try to be a fan and not an anti-fan, but I am a huge anti-fan of Jim Delany.

    MWC Champ > BigTen Champ

BigTen 0-5 on New Year's Day (1-6 overall, if you throw in Nebraska)

Non-AQs are 4-1 head-to-head overall against the "big boys"

Eat your heart out Jim Delany, TCU just ate your lunch!

You're right Mr. Gee (Ohio St. University President). TCU and Boise St. certainly has no business being mentioned as contenders for the national championship.

Another New Year's Day. Another dismal showing by the Big 10 conference. What a joke.

Just like the 08 Utes, TCU won't get their shot to prove who really is the best team. After watching them this year, they are a lot like the 08 Utes and a few of BSU's teams, they could play with any of the "big boys" and beat them most of the time. The Utes, Frogs and Broncos have all been shafted by the BCS. And probably just like 08, the frogs will be "rewarded" a number 2 ranking after Oregon/Auburn winner. Whoohoo!

  • Veritas Aequitas Fruit Heights, UT

Now the issue is conference victories.

The MWC went 4-1, with the only loss to a WAC team that beat TCU last year.

Interesting, that one of the TCU player's mentioned that "God's Hand" was involved after the game. Wow, a Christian University player mentioning God, like God cares who wins a football game? Personally, I have no problem with it, but I know that there are some football fans that will try to drag him through the mud.

Secondly, Brent Musburger noted the class of TCU saying how happy they were to be in the RoseBowl. Not whining that they should be in th NC game, that the TCU staff and team to a man said they were happy where they were ranked, and would watch the polls come out.

I don't know if that will change, and if they will do something embarassing, like throw a parade or three and claim themselves #1, but is refreshing to see a class organization represent the MWC in a BCS game.

Coach Patterson, we will miss you and the class you bring to the national spotlight for the MWC, and the non-AQ teams...

In terms of "game" nothing will match the Boise-OU Fiesta. Of course as a Ute fan, my favorite BCS-busting game was Sugar '08.

But this was a great game with two solid teams and a chance for the "little guys" to stick it to the establishment.

    Mission accomplished.

Betcha the SEC is happy Auburn won't have to play TCU to win the championship.

And yes, the Big-Ten did lay an egg so far (except the Hawkeyes, of course).

So who do you take in the Sugar this year? Either way, it's the establishment that wins: Ohio State, President Gee and Jim Delaney, or the SEC (Arkansas) that is intent on staying the only conference that can consistently vie for the national championship?

  • AK Cougar Palmer, AK
    Jan. 1, 2011 7:11 p.m.

Good game by TCU and Wisconsin. Glad they won and played for all the little guys. Wisconsin is a very good team also. When TCU joins the Big Easy that conference will become the Big Easy plus 1. TCU will dominate them.

TCU is a class team with classy players. You most likely will end up ranked #2 in the final poll.

I'm no fan of the bcs but I really can't see how TCU is getting the shaft. Neither did utah in '08 or boise. The fact is that there is not a playoff so there is no way to decide these things other than opinion and I suppose in the opinion of more of the people that count Auburn and Oregon are better teams than TCU.

Until there is an actual playoff then voting on who is national champion is the only way to do it. The sham is that the bcs lays claim to deciding who can be voted on. They make an artificial matchup of the two "best" teams and then insist whichever of the two wins is the national champ.

If they wish to preserve the bowl system I am fine with that but they need to layoff any claim to crowning the national championship and simply leave it up to the voters to vote on whichever team they think is best from all of the teams in the country regardless of what bowl they play in.

The Disillusionist: It was peaceful on these boards until you opened your mouth. All I can say is, 2 BCS bowls, 2 BCS victories in this decade! And that has more significance than BYU's 1900 something championship no one remembers.

BYU leaves MWC cuz it just got harder and no chance to bust the BCS in the MWC. Utah moves to a BCS conference called the "Conference of Championships", TCU moves to the Big East. What conference did BYU move to??? I know...conference of loneliness. Your jealous, don't deny it, your post says it all.

Super game to watch. Both teams were very well matched. Wisconsin's run game was great. Dalton was amazing and made plays all over the place.

Both teams could do well against Auburn or Oregon. Until there is a real playoff there is NO NATIONAL CHAMPION only conjecture.

TCU is well coached and has a great system in place for winning. Speed kills. Easily the best bowl game so far!

Mountain West - 3 BCS - 0 victories. This is getting old and boring. The poor AQs (automatic qualifiers) continually getting beaten up by the outsiders. How long will systems designed specifically to make the rich get richer exist in america? Especially when they DO NOT deserve it! The BCS is 100% un-american and turning into one hell of an embarrassment! Good thing they pitted TCU vs Boise last year so two AQs didn't get pounded!! Un-American BCS - Big Crying Shame!!

  • MiP Iowa City, IA

Disillusionist: True Utah is the only MWC team to lose their bowl game---but it's also true they've represented the conference well the past decade in bowl games.

Plus that means that Utah has wins against 3 bowls winners (@AFA 9-4, @SDSU 9-4, and BYU 7-6). Pitt has a chance to improve that if they win nwxt week. Plus, their two regular season losses were also by bowl winners.

What does all this mean? Utah will finish in the Top-25 (I'm guessing ~#23). I expect Tulsa and UCF to be there but you can kiss WV and Hawaii good bye.

I'm not disillusioned, when you look at the overall resume, Utah finished 10-3, will likely be ranked Top-25, and had some memorable games. While I'd admit they took some lumps on TV, overall---they represnted just fine.

"The Disillusionist: It was peaceful on these boards until you opened your mouth."

You obviously did not read Chris B.'s comments.

Please don't spread hate about BYU and going independent. They left the MWC for much of the same reasons that Utah left.

And be careful about claiming that BYU left because they are afraid of next years' MWC teams: BYU is in much better shape next year than Utah will be. It can be reasonably argued that this year's 7-6 BYU team was better than Utah's 10-3 team. And after watching the Vegas bowl, I think BYU would have stood more of a chance.

I doubt we will see them filing lawsuits, throwing themselves parades andt thumping their chests, and whining like a bunch of bratty kids who didn't get their way. Class is something some teams will never have regardless of what conference they move to. Yes, the Big Ten was exposed this year. But, Iowa isn't the only Big Ten team to win a bowl game, so did Illinois. This year, they were a mediocre conference, but still had all those lofty tie-ins, resulting in the best teams in the Big Ten playing against better teams across the board.

  • Randy01 Lees Summit, MO

MWC fans should be pulling for Arkansas in the sugar bowl for the following reasons

    1. SEC is the most likely AQ conference to support a playoff system. A SEC sweep of the BIG10 and the PAC10 will make that more, not less likely. SEC fans see the possibility of an all SEC final and like it. A playoff benefits the SEC tremendously, but it opens the door to all FBS conferences.
    2. Arkansas was a nationally relevant program for decades, then fell from grace. Despite the knocks on Petrino for leaving Louisville and Atlanta, he has laid a compelling blueprint for rebuilding a great program, including at least one game each year against a non conference rival, schedules which are among the toughest in the nation.
    3. If Arkansas wins they will have played one third of the top 21 teams in the final polls and would have beaten 5 of them, including co champs in the Big10 and the Big12 Sourh. They clearly demonstrate that the notion that you have to be undefeated to be a contender is foolish.

Finally, an Arkansas win means even more crow for Mr. Gee.

Ok DuckHunter, let me get this straight. You don't think that TCU, UTAH, or BSU got the shaft? And that the best way to choose a NC is voting? Wait....this sounds familiar........Oh, ya, thats what happened in 1984. BYU ran the table that year (like the Utes), didn't play a single team that ended the season in the top 20/25 (Unlike the Ute's), beat the 5th place Michigan Wolverines from the Big Ten, who were 7-5 that year, and were crowned NC by a vote of 36 to 18 (Washington getting 18 votes). Of course you don't think they got shafted. Heck, that's completely fair. What Koolaide are you drinking? Barry Switzer said it best. Washington was the best team in the country that year. Utah beat the team ranked #1 by the AP for 7 weeks handily, finished the season as the only unbeated football team, and were not awarded the NC b/c of the BCS. Which by the way, was created because of you guys. Why not let the two undefeated teams in the Nation TCU & AU/OU play to see who really is deserving to be #1?

As a BYU grad (yes, this is true) can I say this to my fellow BYU brothers. Let's not make too much hay about BYU's bowl win over UTEP or ride Utah on their bowl loss to Boise. Some reality is in order.

BYU loses to Boise just like Utah and Utah beats UTEP just like BYU. Yes, schedule does matter. It is great that MWC has a 4-1 bowl record but in the grand scheme of things these were nice wins but only the TCU win is significant because it came in the Rose Bowl over a BCS team. San Diego State's win is second most significant because it came over a quality opponent Navy, while Air Force's win over Georgia Tech is next. GT comes from a BCS conference but was just a .500 team. BYU might actually own the least significant bowl victory because they beat a 6-6 non-BCS team who had lost five of their last six games. UTEP was definitely the weakest team in the field.

As for Utah's bowl loss. The Utes didn't play well but who really expected them to win?

TCU will be contenders for the future and if the BCS stays as it is, we may get to see them play for that mythical NC title. TCU will do well in the Big East. Utah and BYU's future is a bit more nebulous.

The fact remains that the Utefan posters have changed the tenor of their posts about being in the PAC 12 from very confident to very doubt-filled. They feel compelled to heap doom and gloom on BYU's future, while ignoring the ignominious possibilities for themselves. (See Hedgies recent posts). The inferiority complex emanating from the hill is nauseating.

I commend Utah for their recent success, which led them to where they are today as part of a BCS conference. But when will Utefan get over having to obsess with what BYU is doing. Consider navigating your own obstacles, which are now many(USC, OR, Stanford). The Ute's road to a NC, even with the hope of a playoff in the future, will now be considerably more difficult. It would be refreshing to see one Ute fan man up and admit that without comparing Utah's future to BYU.

A) 3 teams are leaving the conference (all qualified for bowl games even though one was not suppose to)...B) 2 teams that remain in the conference also qualified for bowl games... and probably the most memorable of MWC Football 2011, C) all bowl qualifying teams won except for one depriving the league of the real possibility of having the only undefeated conference in post season play... Utah was an embarrassment but fortunately it will be the PAC 12's embarrassment in the future...

I had hoped that TCU would join BYU in the restructured BIG 12 next year or in 2012, but it looks like it won't be in the cards.... Outside of our sole bowl loser though, the conference teams really made us proud this year.

Congrats TCU and Coach Patterson! Great coaching and team chemistry! They deserved everything they got, they worked hard for it.

The Utes need to rip a page out of TCU's playbook and learn from this! Coach Whit needs to find a way to recruit athletes like TCU's and BSU's players. Hire an offensive minded coach that will teach discipline! The Utes have a ton of talent, I don't think they know how to use it because they don't have the right plays to best utilize the current players on the team. That is a huge problem! I know Gary Patterson would take some of these athletes on the Utes roster and turn them into superstars! Go UTES!

The BCS is a $$$ club to keep the "little" boys out. Next year TCU will get in by virtue of joining the "Big" East. Boise & TCU clearly belong in the BCS games.

There for a while, I thought this would be one set of comments in which Ute fans wouldn't bash BYU, and vice versa. No such luck. Grow up Utes and Cougars.

what a great game. TCU represented the non AQ conferences well and showed them they can play with the big boys. What a joke the Big 10 is. 0-5 this year. Can't include Nebraska in there yet. The arrogance of the BCS. It should be declared a monopoly and served with Ricco Crime papers.

Only the PAC 10 calls themselves the conference of champions. No one else does.

Now that BYU is not in the MWC the big schools are scheduling them, ie Texas, Notre Dame, Mississippi. Great things yet to come.

New Mexico Ute you are truly sad. It seems "you" remember the 1984 championship, something the Utes will NEVER, EVER do. They will be eternally playing in the Las Vegas Bowl because that is where they will finish in the Pac 12; in 3-4 place. It must gall you that BYU did something you have never done and will never do. You will go to your grave hating. What a moniker for you to hate someone. WOW shows your class.

Too funny. BYU fans ragging on Utah for the bowl loss (new flash Utah had won 9 in a row something your little school in Provo has never come close to doing). You won your bowl game but you played the equivalent of New Mexico or CSU but yet you boast about your accomplishments (not to mention a 7-6 season including a loss to Utah). I guess beating UTEP would be a big deal to BYU fans since you have never played in a BCS game and maybe only once in January (in the second tier Cotton Bowl). You guys (BYU fans on these boards) are just jealous little ankle biters who's teams can't get to a BCS bowl or far in the NCAA tourney so you have to tear down your rival who has done far more (and far more recently) than your team. Heck, the Big East preferred TCU (a one team school) over BYU; after dealing with the Y fans I understand why.

Rockymoron), I can't wait to hear your explanation for the Utes 5-7 season next year. How you will manage to somehow interject what BYU did (except for handing the U one of their losses)and what that has to do with Utah's season should make for some funny reading. No bowl for the Utes? Oh, the horror!!

Shouldn't mediocre BYU be beating their chests for destroying a mediocre UTEP in their bowl.

Shouldn't slightly above mediocre Utah be hanging their heads in shame for getting destroyed by a very good Boise State in their bowl.

Utah fans have been beating their chests for years about their bowl winning streak, which on closer inspection, was built mostly on cupcakes.

Now they're making excuses because they lost to a ranked bowl team.

    No surprise.

Alabama is the only team ranked higher than 20th that the Utes have ever beaten in a bowl.

    Wash St #15/#17 LOST
    USC unranked/#25 LOST
    Arizona #20/#20 WON
    Pitt #25/unranked WON
    Alabama #6/#6 WON
    BSU #8/#8 LOST (estimated rank)

BYU has played more ranked bowl teams(17), including 15 in the Top 10, than Utah has played bowls(16).

Makes you wonder what Utah's bowl record would be if the Utes had played TEN Top 15 teams, instead of all of those cupcakes.

First and foremost congrats to TCU, the best team in the MWC over the last 2 years. Good luck next year.

    Just to remind BYU fans...

    A) Utah threw a parade for the ONLY undefeated team in the nation while BYU celebrated at Provo Airport for a 1-0 team.

    B) KW backed his 2008 team just like Bronco did for his 2009 team, neither got what they wanted by the judges:

"Our program is on its way to continued national prominence," said coach Bronco Mendenhall, who added that his team could land in the top 10 of the final rankings.

-- DN Dec 23, 2009 (Cougars manage Vegas blowout)

    C) No where in the World except apparently in Utah County is a 7-6 team better than a 10-3 team.

I'd like to welcome the frogs to the BCS victores club. For all those "fans" outside the understanding of what winning a BCS bowls feels like, I only have pitty.

TCU FINALLY shed the embarrassement of having to hang on to glory days of decades past (NT 1932) and can now feel proud about winning a modern BCS bowl.

It's somewhat of a pity that our little sister of the south gave up all opportunity to overcome such an embarrassment.

Oh well, the tds always have WCC (that's what they call it right?) basketball.

TCU has a very large pool of athletes to draw from and thus they have dominated the MWC.

By the way, TCU wasn't worried about repping for the "little guys". You see when you STOP thinking that you are a "little guy" then you can take it to the next level. TCU's goal pyramid in their locker room had National Championship on it for YEARS. Now BYU and Utah, Stop this silly "little guy stuff". It is NOT attractive nor does anyone care. Utah is in the Pac 12 and BYU is an Independent now so COWBOY UP!!!

@ dillusionist "Conference titles and women's gymnastics aside, of what exactly has Utah ever been champion?"

Champion of beating BYU...how do the numbers 54-34-4 sound? or 2 out of the last 3, or 6 out of the last 10?

You are blue with envy with Utahs INVITE to the Pac 10. Yes, INVITE. All you enivious zoobs can do is HOPE that Utah will struggle in the pac 12. ybu would have died for the same invite. You can try as hard as you can to make youself feel better, but in the end, we have moved on. And independence? Come on, every team in the country is scrambling to align with a conference, and ybu has to do something because big brother moved on, so they hatch this crazy idea. You like to make predictions...here is my prediction...ybu is nothing but intramural sports in 10 years. But hey les will make a nice venue for helaman halls vs deseret towers in 2021....

    @Uteology
Yes, a 7-6 team is better than a 10-3 team, whenever and wherever a 10-3 team needs gifts from the replay booth to beat a 7-6 team by a point. Recent bowl performances only validate that observation.

    @hedgehog
Only a Utah fan would care about forming, let alone belonging, to a "BCS victores club" [sic]. Translation: "BCS victores" [sic] are pseudo-championships for programs who have yet to win a real championship. TCU and BYU have national championships. Where's Utah's?

Oh well, Utah will always have the WCC--including, most recently, the Portland Pilots--to remind them of what their basketball program once was, and how bad their basketball program now is.

Why spoil a great day for TCU? Why not?

First, they beat a team from the Big Losers and are moving to the Big Least.

Second, their coach has no class (where is this classy stuff coming from?).

Third, their mascot is a horny toad.

Fourth, they claim to be playing for the little guys but left the MWC without even saying thanks to the league that made them.

Fifth, if you're not playing for the national championship, the BCS is just another Bowl Game making the big conferences richer.

Jim Delany wins again as his boys lose like crazy and don't have enough players to carry all the money back home.

I love how when a Ute fan posts something on here about our BCS successes, a zoob has to get back with how "insignificant" those wins were because they still weren't NC's. I wonder if BYU spent their share of the millions of dollars that Utah provided them with their 2BCS wins or if, like tithing on gambling money, they sent it back out of stubborn pride? I'll go with they spent it!

BYU lawyers 21 - UU lawyers 14. Close game. Both teams scored some good deals, but I think BYU lawyers pulled off the victory. BYU going independent is a better deal than Utah going to the Pac 12.

    Good luck to both teams.

I can't wait for the real football games to start again.
