A football season is like a horse race. Its not how you start that counts, it's how you finish,,,

That game was painful to watch and I feel sorry for the Utes. They really did miss some opportunities. They easily could have had a 24-0 lead in the first quarter and that could have changed the whole complexion of the game. In the first quarter, it looked like they were going to do to Boise what they did to Alabama... but you have to catch the ball! (the big one they did catch was called back due to a penalty) What if? What if? This is going to haunt Utah for a while.

Very Simple - utes nation were feeling the welcome hands from the PAC10 and were focusing for next year and seeking for big thing. Feeling the future bcs world and Bronco the non qualifier school made sure utah don't win this game. And you think the pac10 and the rest of the bcs feeling stupid picking up utah?

This was a painful game to watch. It reminded be of BYU at the first of this past season. Some good things happening but just couldn't string together enough of them to keep the ball moving. I kept expecting the Utes to get things going but it never happened. I was very discouraged by the pre-game taunting and mouthing off of the Ute players during the game. This was classless and really changed my attitude about wanting the Utes to win. I applaud the Boise coach who grabbed his player and severely chastised him for the same type of behavior. I realize this goes both ways but I really would like to have seen a Utah coach do the same to their players. You would think this would stop by the time your team is down 3 touchdowns but it continued for some of the players. I hope Whittingham disciplines them. Maybe these types of players will get humbled next year in the PAC.
No, I don't like it any more when the BYU players or any schools players do it.

The Yewts are no better than a #8 or 9 team in the new PAC 12. Good luck in your future endeavors. You'll need it.

By the way, coulda, shoulda, woulda doesn't count. The Yewts didn't get a 24 to 0 lead, so it is irrelevant because it didn't happen. If I use that reasoning, BYU shoulda beat the U by 24 points a few weeks ago.

Another problem- utah to busy trash talking, even the ESPN commentators (who we discovered were assigned before they knew who would play) made a comment about it, saying basically enough is enough, go play football. Between the "girlse" comment, the fight during the week, and the pregame fight, utah has established, no cemented, itself as a classless, self-centered, program.

This is an arrogant team and fans base. A lot of schools are going to enjoy taking them behind the woodshed.

  • Whoa Nellie American Fork, UT
    Dec. 24, 2010 8:04 a.m.

The only regrets the Utes should have is recruiting players who trash talk. Every team they've had in the past 15 years has included players that acted that way.

This article is way lame by insinuating the Utah players could have any regrets about their performance or the outcome of that game. Utah was dang lucky to have only lost by 23. It coulda, woulda, shoulda been 43. Instead Utah should find solace in holding Boise State to only 26 points. If those two teams played ten more times Utah would lose every one of them and by far bigger margins.

This may have been the worst performance of the year by Boise State, and it was not because of any fine defensive play from Utah.

    Dec. 24, 2010 8:45 a.m.

All the trash talking, mugging and fighting coming from Utah deminishes the team, the school and the sport. Coach Whit should kick the offenders off the team. Classless!

  • King View Orem, UT

Okay, seriously, no need to rub it in. They still beat us in the rivalry game. I don't care if you guys think it was because of the refs. We should never have put ourselves in a position to lose from a call in the first place. Let the Utes worry about their football team and we can worry about ours.

  • diddy North Ogden, Utah
    Dec. 24, 2010 8:58 a.m.

I get sick reading these comments every week. I swear the fans of both schools on here have some personal assessment of their own value every time either of these teams play. It's ridiculous and so petty. There are news stories with real personal implications that don't get this many comments. It's sad. Utah is a fine institution. BYU has made a name for itself. Utah didn't get chosen to go to the PAC-12 because of football alone. The utes being chosen is no reflection of byus program. While sports may dominate every decision in your life, I hope you are the minority. A little perspective people.

As expected, no shortage of reference posts to the pre-game (most notably) castigations by u players. I would only hope that Whit has a CTJ session with his team and lays on some wood. The player's tweet referencing boise as girlses about to get spanked hard, rings more than hollow. Especially with the reality as to which team played like they were preoccupied connecting daisy chains, while the Broncos served up a heaping does of "Boys II Men"!

Very seldom is 7-6 greater than 10-3 but this year it is. BYU and Utah are headed in very different directions. Next year I see BYU finishing 10-3 while Utah would be lucky to finish 7-6. BTW, way to back up the trash talk Devonte Christopher! Zero catches! Who is the girlse now?

    Dec. 24, 2010 9:08 a.m.

I am not in a position to say all things Utah are classless. I missed the pregame fight and tauntings so I can't comment on that. What I did see was Boise state was a little rusty out of the gate but were still able to keep the boat afloat and get their act together to win. I saw a Utah team with a lot of opportunities which they squandered by being pushed back on their heels, making stupid mistakes (What was with all the holding?) and an All American receiver and companions who caught that virus that BYU receivers had at the first of the season which causes extreme tenderness in the hands. At the time the Y receivers were called out as poor atheletes. So I guess the story of Utah this season is they became poor atheletes. (Absurd assumptions both ways)
Coach Mendenhall just calls the difference in winning and losing execution.

Down the stretch BYU learned to execute.

    Utah learned to be executed.

  • B Logan, UT
    Dec. 24, 2010 10:29 a.m.

Let's be realistic. Utah NEVER had a chance to win this game. Think about it. BSU only had 15 turnovers all year and they had 4 in this game alone. And they still managed to win by 3 touchdowns and gain 540 yards of offense. Utah only managed 200 yards of offense. BSU is a FAR superior team. No question.

  • yarrlydarb Ogden, UT
    Dec. 24, 2010 10:33 a.m.

Christian Cox says: "It was a tough game. We played our little hearts out on defense."

Therein lies the problem with the Utes. Too little heart (both defense and offense), too much braggadocio.

Coach Kyle has a tough row to hoe going into the PAC. Too many players with too little heart and too big a mouth.

That is truly a coaching problem. There's no way for any coach to excuse or defend that sort of thing.

It's really sad to see how much the Utes embarrassed themselves this past season.

I would hope Coach Kyle receives a copy of Coach John Wooden's book, "Leadership Game Plan for Success: 12 Lessons for Extraordinary Performance and Personal Excellence" for Christmas. Then he ought implement what it teaches before his first season in the PAC-12.

Funny hearing smack from fans or a 7-6 team, has 1 win over a team with a winning record and lost head to head against a team that finished 10-3 with 2 of their losses against top 10 teams. Also, for those predicting the down fall of Utah in the Pac-12 and BYU as an independent, could you please post your "knowledge" of future events on the internet so we could all profit from it. Maybe some stock tips or something like that. You guys are ridiculous.

As for the smack talk from Utah, this is one Utah fan that hated it, and it really irritated me that we had guys focusing on talking instead of playing. Let BSU chirp all they want, just play the game.

Congratulations to BYU saving their season from a complete disaster, and congrats to Utah on a very successful season, though not quite what we had hoped for.

    Go Utes.

I think the sky must be falling. Ive read these posts, and the BYU fans who obviously aren't biased at all, have come to the conclusion that Utah boat is sinking. I appreciate that for what its worth. The BYU program is headed in the only direction it can go from here, and after huge wins against the bottom half of the MWC, a stellar 7-6 season with a big win over national powerhouse UTEP they are ready for the big dance (well at least the WAC leftovers). Since there are no problems at BYU(well at least since the entire offensive coaching staff and defensive coordinator was fired). The BYU fans are obviously in a position of moral superiority and they can advise us lowly Utah fans on how to not be classless. Thank you cougar fans for stepping down to that level.

Of course the Ute football team is all about trash talking and fighting. What team do they remind you of? What hand signs are they using to represent themselves? They are just following in the path of the biggest trash talking, fighting school in college football history, the real "U", Miami Hurricanes.

I would be embarrassed if my school AND fans were using a sign taken from a school known for cheating, fighting, taunting, etc...

Being gracious in defeat or victory is not one of the U's strong points. So much for its designation as a "class" program. As a tax payer who graduated from the U I was embarrassed, not at the score, but by the team's representation of the state of Utah.

Not only did Utah lose the game but the comments by Christopher were insipid--he's been a loose cannon all year long as witnessed by his sideline antics during the TCU game. The near-riot at the start of the game probably had the PAC-12 presidents shaking their heads plus all the trash talking while managing to lose by over three touchdowns. That's the stuff that the Whittingham and the U. coaches should regret most...

Could it be hypocritical that so many BYU Fans are trying to judge utah players for talking smack when that is all they do here? nah, couldn´t be.

Utah is a good team that lost to a great team. Half of the loss is on our team as they didn´t execute, but half of the loss is because Kellen Moore and Pettis are just plain studs that are ready for the NFL. As a fan of college football, I couldn´t help but admire how well those two played.

The BSU running game was good too, but the passing attack of the broncos, just unbelievable.

It is really too bad that BSU couldn´t stop Nevada, It would have been fun to see them beat up on an opponent in the BCS and then garner some 1st place votes in the AP poll, following in teh Utes footsteps from the 08 season.

I think that Whittingham needs to make a serious reevaluation of his offensive staff. Cain or Wynn, the Utes didn't have success this year against mid to elite tier defenses. The defense really had a decent year... the teams that beat them managed to keep our offense in series of three and outs and a defense can only hold for so long in those conditions. Considering the offense was expected to be way ahead of the defense this year experience and personnel-wise, I think this merits consideration and possibly some offensive coaching staff changes.

So, I got the chips and salsa, put on my Ute hat so everyone in the room would know who I was rooting for and watched the game. Then, the Utes decide to exchange words with their noble opponents before the game began. And this continued throughout the game. I took off my Ute hat at half-time and rooted for the players who were doing, not talking. I rooted for the men, not the boys.

    Some random thoughts:

    1. Had a great time at the game. Enjoyed Boise fans before and after the game. A few near-by fans at the game irritated me... they just didn't behave as I thought the should.

    2. Boise was a better team. I thought they showed they were a top 10 team but I did not think they should have been in the championship game. As a team they impressed me but TCU, I thought, were better than us at almost all positions. I did not get that impression about Boise.

    3. The Tribune read, "Still a good bowl record". With this loss the U's bowl winning percentage dropped to 75%. As of last year the highest winning percentage of ANY team (except Utah) with 10 bowl appearances was 70%!! I guess having the best percentage in the nation could still be consided a GOOD bowl record.

    4. Many have predicted BYU's return to a impressive winning record and the U's fall to a near break-even record next year. I, for one, can easily see that happening. This while the teams remain relatively close in talent. Schedules mean everything!!!! I prefer PAC-12!

The yewts biggest mistake was trying to block Payne's game winning field goal... Had they not done that then BYU could have returned to the Vegas Bowl, made a much better showing (maybe eve won), and then the yewts could have gone to New Mexico and play a "nail biter" with UTEP and possible have been able to keep their bowl win streak alive (although it might have been tough for them)... They at least would have been able to return to Vegas without being laughed off the field in the future.

"classy" were the loogies on my Utah decals after the BYU game. Can we please get over the classy/hypocritical argument? The sooner both sides come to the understanding that neither side has a moral highground the better off we'll be, and we can just focus on what happens on the field.

Funny how when Utah was beating up on horrible teams like UNLV, CSU, and New Mexico at the start of the season, BYU fans couldn't stop talking about how those wins meant nothing, Utah was horribly overrated, beating those teams by 50 was meaningless, on and on.

Yet after BYU finishes the season by beating up on those EXACT same horrible teams, it somehow indicates that the Cougars are an unstoppable force and the greatest team in the land.

I am a Ute supporter but the following is obvious
    1. The QB's the coaching staff have recruited are average at best. Dump Wynn right now. He's a girly boy and not man enough to play D1 ball. To frail. For crying out loud he weighted 155 lbs in high school.
    2. The Offensive line is undisciplined and killed any chance of being competitive against Boise.
    3. If you add up Shakey's good run's and fumbles
he breaks even. Could have been great.... to many mistakes
    4. The defensive line could not apply any pressure on the quarterback at all. This is true for the entire year. That's why the db's got killed.
    5. Safeties to young and inexperienced. If you look at the film they made as many mistakes as they did postive ones. Nobody counts blown coverages when the other teams scores.
    6. The offensive co-ordinators should be fired.
    7. It would have been better if Asiata had not come back to play this year. To slow
Other than that..the next year looks really bad.
Mostly because our quarterback position really really looks horrible. Whit's winning is over.

Though I wasn't happy with much of Utah's antics, trash talking and behavior just before kickoff, they had a very fine season. Do we really have to put with Christopher for two more years?

Bottom line as said up there, Boise is a better team, will probably be ranked close to the top 5 when it's all said and done and Utah around #25 when it's all said and done. Still disappointed in some of things that happened but Coach Whittingham and the Utes had a good season overall.

I am as big a Ute fan as anyone out there, but this has to be said. We need to quit with the smack BS before the games. This running to the middle of the field to rumble is something that has to end. Grow up. Talk with your talent and efforts not with your big mouths. In other words, walk softly and carry a big stick. Next, Sam Brenner was useless, I would have played Cullen with one arm. Brooke's could not catch a cold, the offensive line should be ashamed. Justin Taplin-Ross was a liablility all year long. Blechen had to play two positions because Justin was day-dreaming. With the exception of the fourth quarter against the TDS, we played with no heart in our final six games. Kyle, do a Bronco and make each offensive coach, sans Johnson, reapply for his job. We are going into the big time, we need big time effort. Play up, not down.

I'm a BSU fan and have watched every Bronco game this year. In my opinion this was the Broncs worst performance of the season (including the Nevada game). I was at the bowl game in LV. It had been pouring rain there for four straight days. Rather remarkably, the rain stopped about an hour before kickoff. The field had to have been soaking wet. I wonder if that (wet ball) contributed to so many dropped passes (on both sides). Not making excuses. Just wondering.

All these comments from BYU fans of classless Utes is ridonkulous!! Why?

    Well judge for yourself

    A) BYU apologizes to USU for ill-advised Jumbotron message -- Deseret News (Nov 18, 2010)

    B) BYU football: Max Hall reprimanded by Mountain West Conference -- Deseret News (Nov. 30, 2009)

    C) BYU football: Max Hall apologizes for tirade -- Deseret News (Nov. 30, 2009)

    D) BYU football: Lamb, Jorgensen reprimanded for comments in Daily Herald -- Deseret News (Nov. 23, 2009)

    E) Doing the Hakka on the road, throwing upside down U, and blowing kisses by BYU players is as also a sign of showing disrespect to your opponent

What DV did on twitter was ridonkulous as well, he should have let his play do the talking not his mouth.

However, comparing actions of a 20 year old sophomore with 26 year old seniors puts things in perspective, considering DV was never reprimanded by the league.

Yes, it has NOTHING to do with Mississippi State but YES it has to do with BYU. Why? Wait for it... because it is BYU fans on a Utah board calling out Utes as classes.

  • PAC man Anaheim, CA
    Dec. 25, 2010 9:56 p.m.

    Uteology

Hand picking stats that only support a particular point of view is by definition "spin".

For example: Utah hasn't beaten a single PAC 10 team with a winning record on the road THIS CENTURY!

Conclusion: Utah has absolutely no chance of ever winning a PAC 12 championship because the best Utah will ever be able to do is finish 5-4 when the Utes have 5 conference home games.

(And please, don't try confusing road games with neutral site games. Beating California in San Diego isn't remotely the same as beating California in Berkeley.)

    btw,

When are your going to grow up and stop with the childish name calling? That's the kind of thing elementary school kids do when they don't have a serious rebuttal to an opposing argument.

To Uteology - seems like your research is pretty one-sided, as it is for most homers who have nothing better to do than update their scrapbooks titled "Why I Hate My Perceived Sports Enemy." Maybe 2011 is the year to get a real life.

Both Zoob & Ute fans on this forum need to get a life. Wow, read some of these comments from the Zoobs......the institution is classess...bla bla. Wow, you sound like spoiled little Maxy Hall. Football is a trash talking sport. You guys seriously don't think your team talks on the field? Get a life. Spend some time with your families. Get a new hobby. At the end of the day, it's just football. Who cares? I've learned that these forums are about as big a waste of time as PS3. Besides, I've given up, half of my responses to SammyG never get published anyways. I really wish this rivalry would die. I'm really sick of both sides. Here's wishing BYU success going Independent. I don't agree with it. I don't think there going to every reach a BCS title game this way. But, good luck to them. I don't hate the University (I will probably send my daughter there in 16 years), I just dislike 97% of their fans. Utes........you better recruit hard, b/c gone are the weeks of playing WAC patsies. It will be interesting.

One Nil 10:23pm Christmas Day, geesh...

"Besides, I've given up, half of my responses to SammyG never get published anyways."

(sniff, sniff, Kleenex moment) To my fans:

I am honored that I have somehow been credited with beating one Ute troll at their own game.

Actually I cannot take any credit as it was the fight on the field that made the real difference.

Congratulations to BYU for a winning season and gaining all of the momentum for next season.

To the Utes, a 10-3 cupcake season won't begin to cure the woes of being in the PAC-12. Enjoy Vegas, your new home away from home bowl series.

I just keep thinking of the movie "Groundhog Day" and wondering what's going to be different at Vegas next year.

Utesies... I'll be watching you close next season. I hope you can impress me. Nothing would please me more than seeing you guys do something next year... anything.

BYU vs. Utah at game #3 will be a different animal.

My only hope being on these boards was to even things out a little bit and have some fun. Hope it was fun for everyone.

    To Pac Man

It actually makes me chuckle a little when people try to make a point by capitalizing their words, especially when the supposed facts they are spewing are wrong.

If you recal Utah won at Arizona in their first BCS busting year. That was 2004. That is this century.

And you know what all that history means, absolutely nothing. Utah will do fine in the Pac-12 and BYU will do fine as an independent.

For those stating that both will fail, please give me some other "facts" so I can plan my future, maybe start with the price of gas this summer.

    One zero

"Besides, I've given up, half of my responses to SammyG never get published anyways."

Could it be that one of the reasons that your comments were not published was that they were inappropriate or classless like so many comments we see on these boards? Rules are rules and if your comments are not making the ink it's your problem.

You know I'm not a Ute Nation lover but I'm not an institutional hater either. I think the U of U is a great school.

I'm thinking in a year or two I might honestly enjoy watching more Ute football from a more positive perspective than what I've exhibited this past season.

Ute Nation commentary and attitude to BYU stories has influenced my thinking. Seeing an institution constantly derided and taken to task for everything through its sports programs is very strange don't you think?

Maybe the BYU / Utah parting of ways will foster a healthier atmosphere down the road. Maybe it will calm down the rivalry but deep down I will always root for BLUE.

Maybe in 2012 I'll become a Ute fan. Until then expect my honest comments.

I always find it intersting how many people are critical of the players and their attitudes and somehow want the coach to solve that- having coached a little in my life I would suggest that most of the time the attitude of the players is a reflection of the coaches- stop pointing fingers at the players and point a few at the coaches- they set the tone on a team and the ground rules- most of the time when things happen it is either coaches who set the tone or coaches that failed to set the tone- classless- look no further than the coaches- you get paid the big bucks then you take the blame.

Utes just ran into a better team. Guess this year was different than 2008 and 2004.
