As a UCLA alum I have never been prouder. No seniors, players transferring, etc. This shows that the UCLA program is on the way back. The Pac 10 is young right now because so many players leave early for the NBA. Byu and Utah fans, just check the rosters. By the way, the Pac 10 respects both BYU and Utah's programs, but you guys still act like the redheaded stepchild. Oh, and don't talk about UCLA just being athletes....they shot it well, rebounded, defended, etc....deal with it

Overrated. Mark it down - utah finishes the season with as good of a record as byu. Ucla is not even that good but again we see what happens when speed and athleticism meets byu

Didn't UCLA lose to Montana in their last game? Hmmm maybe the Zoobs can at least be competitive in their new leage (whatever it's called).

I just came down to turnovers. We didn't take care of the ball.

There's no doom and gloom here, just a loss.

UtahDerek and Cris B. had to wait until our 11th game to come on and predict the end of BYU basketball. Silly trolls.

UCLA played a great game...and BYU's inside weakness was exposed. They will have a great season, but will struggle against teams with strong, athletic inside men...which UCLA has. They had their chance when they got back to within 2, but hurried their next two possessions.

Don't know how anybody (except a die-hard UTE fan) could think they will end up with the same record as Utah...unless their starting 5 decided to quit...but think the Utes have a corner on that one.

Unfortunate loss, against a UCLA team which played a great game. Hopefully they'll learn some from this game...like not passing inside to Anderson! :o( He can play some defense and is good for 5 fouls...but offensively he just doesn't have the hands...oh well...

  • Louisiana Cougar Pineville, LA

BYU's loss was a result of poor preparation (with a bad decision to give the team three days off), poor coaching (with no apparent consistent game plan), a weak interior defense (partially related to Hartsock still suffering from his concussion), a horrid game on the part of Fredette (who made numerous turnovers), few assists (with only two in the entire first half), and weak rebounding overall.

BYU's weaknesses were predictably exposed by a great coaching job and good play by the Bruins. The Cougars will need to do a gut check and show whether they have the courage, the brains, and the talent to beat tough teams.

I hated watching this game, I saw the loss coming, and I hope the Cougars avoid such disappointing play in the future. Chris Collinsworth was a huge disappointment, shooting threes like a shooting guard. Davies and Emery played well in the second half, but Fredette disappeared.

Games like this, win or lose, will help prepare the team for the post season.

Cris B, as much as I like the Utes, BYU is still much better. BYU should finish second in the MWC and Utah 5th.

There's some pretty big talk on here from some of you yewts considering your 7-3 record which includes a stellar home loss to 4-6 Oral Roberts. Last I checked, 10-1 was still better than 7-3 and BYU's RPI of 5 going into today's game was just a little better than Utah's 114. Don't get too excited over today's loss. BYU will still win 30+ games and finish the year in the top 20 - both accomplishments that Utah won't come anywhere close to.

Hey Chris! Give it a rest.

Your tired diatribe through football season was a monotone drone of no account. "Oh how the Utes are sooo great!" Sorry pal, but if they come within 30 of Boise it will be a great moral victory for Utah. Anyone who watched Cane in that last game saw a rendition of the back-up 9th grade QB thrown to the wolves. It's going to be a nightmare.

Oh, by the way, same in B-Ball.

    BYUSpiker.

Facts zoob BYU cannot beat long athletic teams away from provo. Its a fact. And if this is supposed to be the self proclaimed best team in BYU history than you should beat a mid pac 10 team with NO senors. There freshman and sophs destroyed you today. I am sure you guys will win 25 to 30 games. But when the tourney comes you will be done in the second round if you can get past the first just like last year.

    Dec. 18, 2010 9:00 p.m.

Coach Rose said it in the days leading up to this game that UCLA's big men and their inside game would put BYU to the test. They did. UCLA played a litte better than usual today and BYU played a little less. Good game anyway. Playing catch up is not nearly as fun as leading the whole way.

Reading some of the posts above, I see some respect from from UCLA fans. Thanks for the good remarks. I see some from the usual critics that have a love/hate relationship with all things Cougar. Where do these guys come from. What do they do when they are not criticizing BYU? Do they have any life at all?

    Go Cougars.

After an afternoon and evening of Christmas shopping, I settled down in front of the TV to watch my recording of the game. When it started, I noted that all three referees were similar demographically. I stopped the recording and erased it. When I checked the results on-line, it was exactly as I expected. I'm sure glad that I didn't waste my time watching the game.

Typical BYU b-ball/football team: big hype and wins until quality competition comes along. If BYU played in the PAC 10 or an East Coast conference, they would have had 5 losses already this year and would NEVER get 25 wins a season. Want proof? How many time has BYU made it past the 1st round of the NCAA's or won a BCS bowl? We are a HORRIBLE team against anyone with a lick of strength or coaching. Jimmer should be first team All-American for Div 2A. He's weak against quality competition.

Shame on BYU for getting their heads so big after playing weak teams...AGAIN.

Fredette is NOT Big Time - 2 years from now, no one will even know who he is!!!

Three reasons why this is not a bad loss:

    1. Not having the play of Noah Hartsock could have been the difference.
    2. Seven point loss playing an away game is not indicative of a weak team.
    3. Cris Collingsworth alittle rusty after sitting a few weeks could have been the difference.

Hey Lyle in Randolph...when you say the refs were "similar demographically," what exactly does that mean? It sounds like code for something that might not be politically correct. Suggesting that the game was decided before it even began due to the selection of referees...does not speak well of BYU fans. And you wonder why so many folks dislike the Cougs? Which officials would you care to see on Tuesday night at Weber State? We wouldn't want them to be partial to the Wildcats. That never happens in the Marriott Center. One loss and the sky is falling in. Give us a break. Now I know why Lavell hated doing that call in radio show after all those football games. Cowboy up Cougs...and show some intelligence.

I think we saw what it will be like for Jimmer in the NBA, tough to get his shot off against quicker, taller athletic guards. Unfortunately, no coach in the NBA is going to allow him to shoot those prayer hook and scoop shots he gets while being the star at BYU. Too low percentage against better players in the NBA. But to each their own.

Congrats Cougars on a great start so far this year but I wish that the BYU preseason could have more quality teams to play against. Playing a weak schedule elevates fans expectations, doesn't prepare the team against real athletes, and certainly doesn't help develop any sense of national respect. I'm sure the coaches are working to make the team better and they will gain from this experience.

How lucky for BYU that 3 of their starters were from Provo High School. With the football team also getting a high percentage of their players from Timpview, the Provo area sure produces a lot of D-I players. Too bad the rest of the nation can not compete with Provo in producing so many D-I players.

  • CaliforniaCougar Lake Elsinore, CA
    Dec. 19, 2010 7:52 a.m.

I was at the game behind the Cougars bench. Here is my take on the game:

    1) Hartsock and C. Collinsworth were not as good as UCLA's inside players, but, had they both been healthy to play more minutes, that could have made a big difference in keeping the game closer.

    2) Jimmer's fourth foul should have been the fifth foul on their big guy. The difference is that it caused Jimmer to leave the game and kept the other guy in the game. BYU had the momentum in the comeback until that foul.

    3) Jimmer having a 'bad' game was still better than everyone else on the court.

    4) Since the game was honoring the late John Wooden, the arena showed clips of Wooden during media timeouts. During the last timeout with under four minutes to play, the video board showed the last clip. Then, the entire crowd including BYU fans stood up and gave a long one minute rousing ovation for the legendary coach. It was pretty cool.

Wow the haters have a lot of pent up rage because they had to wait 11 games for a loss. I won't bother to respond to them except for eastcoastcoug. Jimmer had some bad turnrovers yesterday but he has played well against good competition in his career. See NCAA tournament last year, Arizona the last two years and plenty of good games against SDSU, UNM, UNLV and Utah. By the way the Cougars have beaten good teams away from home this year. You haven't been following them if you don't think so.

I was disappointed in the defensive effort yesterday. I thought they played too much zone, but maybe that was because of matchup issues in man to man. Not having Noah be able to contribute in the 2nd half definitely hurt. We are not deep at the 4 and 5.

Also the horrible call on Jimmers 4th foul ruined the comeback. That 11-0 run gave us the momentum and I thought the comeback was on, but that "charge" killed it. Never should have been down that much.

Lastly did anyone experience issues with FSN? They went to the game late and cut away early.

Wow, I can't believe how so many of you are interpreting the outcome of one game with such far-reaching conclusions. Its basketball. Sometimes teams lose games.

Last month, UCLA came to Allen Fieldhouse and were 0.7 seconds away from sending the Jayhawks into overtime (on the Jayhawks home court!). Maybe UCLA knows how to put themselves together from time to time...

  • DRay Roy, UT
    Dec. 19, 2010 8:34 a.m.

A smaller team can win...see UCLA's early Ncaa championship years...but they must shoot really well, be perfectly in tune and timing as team beats individual, quick by anticipation beats athleticism, relentless drive beats the teams that stop to pound their chests, show off etc. after a play...Cougars, you gotta plow right through 'em, never quit, just play winning b-ball.

  • Cougs4Life Gilbert, AZ
    Dec. 19, 2010 9:15 a.m.

The Cougs are going to struggle with teams that have size and power in the post...we don't have any defensive answers for that. SDSU will be a similar test and we may not pass.

  • fan29 Orem, UT
    Dec. 19, 2010 9:17 a.m.

Size with quickness is what not only takes out BYU, but every Team in the MWC. Everyone plays such cup cake schedules during the regular season no one gets deep into the NCAA's. For BYU, they just don't have the size inside to go the distance!!

  • joe x-cougar Alpine, Utah
    Dec. 19, 2010 9:34 a.m.

BYU's game last night with UCLA proved, once again, that there is no "i" in team. The Dave Rose coached Cougars don't play like a team, they don't execute the fundamentals. Rose has always believed that talent trumps execution...and that's why they seldom win the big ones. BYU will rarely advance past the first round of the NCAA or win the Mountain West tourney under Dave Rose. Fredette is one of most inept point guards in BYU history; he is out of position, should be playing the "2". And, until the Cougars get an inside game...forget about it.

  • WJCoug West Jordan, Utah

BYU is what it is - a very good basketball team and program. We all know that they will struggle against big, athletic teams. But a 10-1 start, with hopefully a lesson well learned at the hands of UCLA - I still believe the season will be a rousing success with a potential trip to the sweet 16.

As for Yewties mocking the one loss, I will take BYU's basketball AND football programs over what you have any day. Two programs headed in totally different directions.

    Go Cougars!

One loss and the BYU haters come out in droves, it is unbelievable. Very little facts to back up their obnoxious comments.
This loss will do this BYU team more good than if they had won. It will give them specific areas they need to work on to become better.
This BYU team if more athletic than many are giving them credit for, they don't have alot of size or bulk but quickness on the defensive side is pretty good. One on one offensive talent isn't there but skills and shooting is better than most teams.
The Big East team S. Florida that BYU beat was big and athletic, St Mary's is a good team and was a sweet 16 team if I remember right, most of BYU's wins have come away from the marriott center.
If Davies continues to improve and produce this team will be tough and all the BYU haters/ ute trolls will be hiding their heads.

  • BYU Student Provo, UT
    Dec. 19, 2010 11:22 a.m.

Geez, haters. BYU is good. I saw that loss coming after that run in the first half - UCLA was too physical, and we were fouling way too much. We couldn't get our game going. But better a loss after the 11th game than after the 31st. BYU is still a good team. UCLA will probably put it together and do very well in the Pac-10.

Why would we have 5 losses if we were in the Pac-10 at this point? That doesn't make sense. YOU might have 5 losses, Ute fans, but BYU is a very good team, and yesterday was the first time we've trailed by more than 3 points all season. Hmmmm. Enjoy your weak basketball team. Can't wait to crush you both time this season.

UCLA almost knocked off the Jayhawks. They don't lose at home (USC tried yesterday), ever. Like, 65 straight home games without a loss or something insane like that. I'm not ashamed to lose to a team that has the talent and skill that UCLA has. MWC is a good test - 6 good games for sure.

  • Wildcat Ogden, UT
    Dec. 19, 2010 1:05 p.m.

BYU is a good team, they don't win games on the road vs. good teams. It's a tricky situation for them, if they schedule up, they can't rack up the rankings, but they are less prepared for tournament time, if they schedule down, they rack up wins, but are unprepared for the big teams. I don't know if they are Top 25, they are close, but I still think they have to win games on the road to qualify.

I was looking forward to the Weber State game at the Dee Events Center--but then Lillard broke his foot and is out for the year--it would have been a great game and shown who is the best player in the state--unfortunately that player will be on the sidelines. It will be a big test now--but never count the Cats out in O-town! Go Wildcats!

  • OU812 Layton, UT
    Dec. 19, 2010 1:16 p.m.

Unfortunately Captain L, Davies is already willing to be a producer but the PG doesn't allow it. The first half jimmer got his 17 points and BYU was being dominated. The second half when Jimmer was much more quiet. Davies came alive and owned the paint with a ferocious dunk and had UCLA on their heels. You have a dominating inside presence but seldom use him the way he should be used.

The reason people get disappointed is because this is the first game against good competition and it looked like BYU was out of their element.

All of the comments about BYU not having played anyone this year are completely ridiculous! Any of you ever heard of something called RPI? An RPI of 5 going into the UCLA game says that BYU has played and beat numerous quality opponents this year and most of them on the road or at neutral sites - they haven't played a game at the Marriott Center in a month. And for the Jimmer bashers, I remember hearing a lot of the same kinds of comments about Danny Ainge 30 years ago. Things seemed to work out ok for him. Jimmer is a special player that comes along once in a generation and when he is finished at BYU, his jersey will hang in the rafters next to Ainge's.

Now, what planet did you say you are from? Please, give me any stats that would back up such a ludicrous statement. Either you have never watched Fredette or your just a simple hater. Which one is it?

Even on an off night Fredette still showed he was the best basketball player on the court.

Although I think the team leans on Fredette a little too much, I would say, overall, Rose is doing a pretty good job, and Davies is really adding to the inside game.

In this game only 5 assists for BYU!?!? And 19 turnovers!?!? That is lack of intensity and lack of hustle and too much reliance on Fredette.

But the haters and fair weather fans are all over this game like it is the end of the world for BYU BB. . . nonsense. They will adjust and will be just fine. BYU had one of their worst performances of the season and still kept the game close on a court where UCLA just doesn't lose.

I love all the BYU haters coming out. I can't believe I'm about to say this but, here it goes. "Usually in a game like this it is the so-called small school that catches the big guy at the right time. They just happened to swtich roles this time around with the fact that Hartsock's face is still sore and Collinsworth just came back from injury. Good win for UCLA, but it's considered a quality win for that program right now which is a great sign for the mtn. west and BYU; and a poor sign for the Pac 10 come tourney time." I Can't wait to see the tournament in Vegas this year because the Mtn West is 5 teams deep with Utah vastly improving this year even if no one else agrees or wants to see it for what they really are this year. Tough loss, too many turnovers and Hartsock wasnt his usual self. Its one loss though and not the end of the world. BYU is still a great team and they will rebound from this loss. In this day and age College basketball consists of alot of pararity and so every team by the end of the year will likely have at least a couple of losses. Its very tough to win them all, especially on the road.

To all BYU and Jimmer haters... get real... BYU is a good team and has quality wins already this season on the road. No one wins them all (except UCONN women apparently), and this was not their night. Are they a top 10 team? No, but are they a team that has a great shot of getting to the sweet 16 this year. Absolutely. As far as the naysayers who say Fredette doesn't play team ball or BYU doesn't, you are crazy! BYU is a great team, and plays well together. Jimmer is constantly touted not just for his individual play, but for his team play by NBA scouts and national sports analysts. However, your biased hatred of all things BYU and especially of their star player expose you for the frauds you are. Enjoy watching this loss again and again on your DVR, because truth is it won't happen but maybe 5-6 times this year which will mean the Cougars will end with another awesome record while most of the naysayers teams will have worse records...
