On this same day and in this same news report there is another crime that police
have all but destroyed the lives of innocent victims of police brutality and
illegal incarceration. They live in Payson and accused and proven to have
murdered their father. At least the police were convinced they did until they
got a tip that someone else did it. They didn't go find or look for the real
killers, the tip come to them about the real killers. This only goes
to show that you don't cooperate with the police who have millions of dollars to
break down alibis and create the wrong evidence. The couple in Payson cooperated
with the police and look where it got them, in jail for a murder they didn't
commit.Cooperating with the police just gives them ammunition to
discredit and disprove the truth with fabricated lies and public persecution.
This is why we have the right not to incriminate or submit to interrogations.
Josh is smart to keep quite and let the police do their job, find the truth for
a change instead of fabricate lies to destroy the truth and lives of families.
Lee,Sure, the allegation is proposterous, but the media had to cover
it, just as you did--to show the absurdity of it. If it were anyone else making
the allegations, it would not be worth the paper it is written on, but because
the source is "the only person of interest in the case" and his
father, it is definately newsworthy.
@My2Cents - It is unfortunate that the police in the Mortensen case made some
wrong assumptions, but I think it's worth noting that they pursued the case and
the Mortensen's have now been cleared. While they've lost 4 months of their
lives in jail, I'm willing to be that they would still have cooperated with
police if it meant finding Prof. Mortensen's killers. Josh Powell is
the one person who stands to most help the police find his wife, and give her
family some answers. But he's done nothing. If he really does care about Susan,
like he claims, he would do everything to help the police regardless of how it
makes him look.Furthermore, the police present evidence. It's up to
the prosecution to determine if that evidence points towards a crime, and they
file the charges. It's wrong of you to imply that the police have ruined
people's lives when they merely act on the evidence available. Yes, sometimes
the evidence isn't always clear, but we're not privy to the same information
they have, so can we say we'd have acted differently?
So we don't want theories on how these people might be alive, because that would
upset our acceptance that they're dead?
If the allegations weren't so cruel they would be comedic. I did check out the
Powell's website. It is clear that Steve Powell is a control freak. It's clear
that he is hiding something. The suggestions he makes, for example about
employment similarities, are preposterous. Wow! They both worked in downtown
Salt Lake City. Bingo! Opportunity to have met and had an affair. Or they
both had internet connections so they probably met on Facebook and are now in
Brazil. Leaps in logic appear to be the Powells' forte'.
Crazy conjecture...Why doesn't he just tell what he knows instead of making up
stuff out of thin air?
Re Moderate: We don't want BAD and UNSUBSTANTIATED theories. Bring forth any
that have substance and confirmed credibility. The Powell's move was completely
self-serving.Lee Benson: Thanks for this. It needed to be said.
I also feel for the Payson family, but what happened there doesn't
justify the Powells' behavior in any way. Hopefully law enforcement will learn
from that case, and not act timidly in the Susan Powell case because of those
mistakes. Remember how the Smart family was maligned and accused by the
SLTribune and other press, investigated by law enforcement, and suspected by
others? They put themselves completely on the line to find their daughter, and
suffered for it, but they loved their girl, and it was all about finding her,
not protecting themselves.Do you see any of that in Josh Powell?
Not an atom.
My2Cents is right. In my experience as a criminal lawyer, the ONLY
advice I ever gave was: Guilty or innocent do no say anything but your name and
address. I repeat say NOTHING.
The police checked out this suggestion and have found no viable reason to pursue
this further. If Josh and Steve Powell were really concerned, maybe
they'd try to reach out to Susan in Brazil? They remind me of O.J. who has
spent his lifetime trying to find his wife's killer.
I'm not LDS. but even *I* know that Susan and Steven couldn't be married in an
LDS Temple in Brazil -- because Susan's still married to her husband.People need to be detail-oriented, or they'll fall for Nigerian scams and
Just a comment on the Mortensen case. I have heard from people involved in
investigations that too often the police get it in their minds who is guilty and
refuse to listen to any other possibility. Perhaps that is what they did here.
As least they have righted the wrong they did.As for Susan Powell, Steve
is just trying to manipulate everyone (remind you of someone who is currently on
trial in SLC?), but his father is either nuts or could be called an accessory
after the fact.
If it were my wife were to disapear I would go crazy. I would be crying like I
have never cried before. I would be begging for help and doing much more on my
own to find my wife than law enforcement would allow me to. But thats just
because I love my wife. I do not want to judge but I cant understand Josh
Powell. I don't understand his actions, his words,or behavior in any way. What is
wrong with this guy? And to assume these theories and make them public in
order to make himself look good is hurting lots of innocent people. It is
extremely selfish. And his Father Steve Powell probably never punished his
son or taught him the meaning of responsibility. His actions remind me of
the pathetic neighbors response "Not my boy!" I used to hear by a
parents whos children had no hope. Josh was probably never spanked, sent to
his room, grounded,or had his mouth washed out with soap.I see serious
parenting issues here. Josh will never grow up.
"Under that criteria, tens of thousands more who fit the above description
around 30, LDS and who passed through West Valley City in late 2009 would
qualify instantly as suspects."----Except for that
one criterion that you left out, Mr. Benson: the fact that, unlike those
"tens of thousands," Koecher and Powell each is MISSING. Very good points, My2Cents. And regarding "cruel."
Sorry, folks, but the truth can BE cruel. Of course we don't know this
alternative theory as fact. But neither can we correctly rule it out merely on
the basis of blog posts which read: "But she would NEVER leave her
children. Therefore, there is NO WAY the alternate theory could possibly be
true!" The TRUTH is, these people do NOT know that she DIDN'T carry on an
extra-marital relationship over the Internet, without tracks, using disposable,
non-traceable phones, and that she ISN'T in Brazil, alive and well. Father Powell's 9-page theory may be conceived in error. But it is reasonable
and well thought-out, if you actually read it. And it in no way suggests that
Josh is a saint, nor some fantastic husband.
The Powell's theory is not new. If you look around you will see that the theory
received attention early on in the case. It doesn't seem plausible and it has
no evidence to support it but to me it looks like the Powells are grasping at
straws. The Susan Powell disappearance is odd in a lot of ways but
the familial interactions in the case are crazy. It seems that both the Powell
and Cox families are either being portrayed as crazy in the media or they are
actually crazy. Either way, it doesn't bode well for Susan.I'm not
sure what to make of the Koecher mystery. The fact that one day after he was
last seen his cell phone was used to check his voicemail is strange. I wonder
if he isn't like that kid who wandered off to Alaska after college and they made
a movie about him.
