Great, not only do we have to humiliated by BSU again, but it's going to be televised on National TV. C'mon Ute fans, I know you want to believe that KW can pull another miracle victory off, but this Ute team is nothing like 08'. It's going to be along night. BSU will feast on us....sorry to say. Yahoo sports has 96 % of the country picking Boise in this one. I just hope the Ute's will use that as incentive, and hopefully, just hopefully we can keep it respectful.

I don't want to hear any comments about "Your not a true Ute fan". Because I'm being brutally honest here. "Were in a whole lotta trouble here". Kinda wish I could go to New Mexico and play, what's that team called again...Western Texas? ..........Oh, ya, UTEP. Sorry!

    Prediction:

    Boise State 56
    Utah 17

    @One Nil to the Arsenal

Get real, I rather lose by 50 than play in New Mexico vs. a 6 win team.

    @BluCoug
Its postseason shouldn't you be worried about UTEP? After all your program is horrible in the postseason:

    BOWL RECORD
    Utah 12-3
    BYU 10-17-1

    vs. RANKED TEAMS
    Utah 3-1
    BYU 2-13-1

    vs. UNRANKED TEAMS
    Utah 9-2
    BYU 8-4

    vs. BCS TEAMS
    Utah 7-3
    BYU 10-13-1

    vs. MIDMAJOR TEAMS
    Utah 5-0
    BYU 0-4

Great article except ESPN is not sending their crews to the Utes bowl. They are sending them to the Broncos bowl. ESPN does not give a rats hind end about Utah, and Boise is their little darlings and ESPN is eager to watch Boise destroy the mighty PAC 10.5 bound Utes. Awesome!

Dear Ewetie football team and fans.

All of you are about to experience what life is going to be like in the PAC 10 or 12 whatever, with your matchup with BSU in Vegas. I'd wish you good luck but luck isn't going to cut it where your headed. It might be better said that your greedy decision to leave for a new conference will raise it's ugly head very soon and the pain brought with it will upset many Utahn's in future years!

re:uteology: You're really not that great. Sorry for the news flash, no one really cares about one of the weakest bowl records ever, that includes a win against a worthless Pitt and a deflated, under motivated Alabama. Try winning a bowl game when someone is trying to knock you out of the National Championship.

    Re: Uteology

Be careful what you wish for, a 50 point loss is possible.

Also, one stat you failed to mention among BYU's 28 bowl appearances, is a National Championship.

    BYU 1
    UoU 0

That being said, the Utes have enjoyed a remarkable run in bowl games. They seem to always be prepared and have been a fun team to watch in the post season. They just may give the Broncos a run.

Both BYU and Utah are getting the level of competition they deserve in their bowl games. The Ute's have had a nice season and are being rewarded with a great opponent, and ESPN's elite coverage.

    Uteology

Thanks for the history lesson, but when you grade the close wins, blowout losses, opponents, home/away, bowls, night, day, rain, snow, wind, sleet, and every other factor you can possibly think of to try to make the Utes appear better than they really are, the ONLY stat that really matters is FINAL RANKING!

    FINAL Top 25 Rankings
    BYU 17
    Utah 5

Only five of Utah's twelve bowl winning teams were good enough to be ranked in both polls.

Most of Utah's bowl teams wouldn't have even been invited to a bowl in the 70's and 80's because the Utes weren't good enough.

    Enjoy the beatdown in Vegas!

  • CG Orem, UT
    Dec. 7, 2010 7:10 p.m.

It'll be interesting to see how long the Utes can stay close enough to the Broncos to keep the announcers from getting bored and starting to talk about Auburn vs. Oregon and other upcoming bowls.

  • royalblue Alpine, UT
    Dec. 7, 2010 7:25 p.m.

You conveniently left the MOST important stats off your list Uteology.

    Bowl team that finished #1.

    BYU 1
    Utah 0

Bowl teams that finished in the Top 25.

    BYU 16
    Utah 5

In 1977, BYU(9-2) finished #16/#20 tied with Arizona State for the WAC championship, but didn't play in a bowl.

Once again, Utah(10-3) is sending another team to a bowl, but the Utes won't finish in the Top 25 unless they manage to stay within two touchdowns of the Broncos.

Agreed with other posters. This is all about Boise St. It's the only reason for ESPN. Sorry for next year when Boise is on the mtn. You'll fade. Maybe not as fast since espn has been on your side.

Amazing to see a bowl game story concerning ESPN coverage turn into a U vs BYU comment thread. The U just needs to enjoy the occasion for national exposure and if possible play competitively with BSU. Note it is rated as the # 7 bowl game in the country out of 35 by Sports Ill. Sorry, Y the New Mexico bowl is #33 out of 35.

  • mussingaround Palo Alto, CA

    Uteology

    Utah versus ranked bowl teams
    Utah 3-2

    Lost to WSU #15/#17
    Lost to USC -/#25
    Beat Ariz #20/#20
    Beat Pitt #25/-
    Beat Bama #6/#6

Only ONE bowl win in Utah history against a team ranked higher than 20th.

It's easy to see why the Utes, despite their over-rated bowl record, hardly ever finish ranked...

which is the true measure of a good season.

btw, BYU would have had another bowl win over a Top 25 team, if the Cougars hadn't DESTROYED then #16/#16 Oregon State so badly in last year's Las Vegas Bowl.

The Utes will win in Vegas. Their defense will be too much for Boise St.

  • sammyg Springville, UT

It is very evident that reality is setting in.

Ute frustration is rising exponentially as it becomes very clear that this game could very well be another 'goose egg'.

This game has the potential to be as bad if not worse than the TCU game and now we hear Brent and crew will be here. You Ute fans just better get prepared for the comments.

You think losing to TCU and ND was bad. This time you're going into the game without Wynn (maybe a plus), a previous ranking of #5, the story of going to the PAC-12, and a narrow victory over BYU. I'm sure the ESPN boys will be talking about all of these things and then the question will be said, "Why are the Utes here today?" Then the discussion about the weak MWC will start.

Then there will be plenty of discussion about BYU going independent.

Bet you any amount of money that the ESPN discussion about BYU will be positive and more relevant than the Utes losing to BSU and going to the PAC-12!

    Mark it down!!!

ESPN does a 25 Most Prestigious Football Programs ranking every decade. The most recent one was 2009 (pretty recent). Go look it up and tell me what Utah is ranked and what BYU is ranked. That is, if you can face the truth like a man.

And any talk about BYU and Utah right now is going like this:

"Boy, ranking the Utes at #5 was the polls' biggest blunder! Talk about overrated!"

"It is hard to believe that this BYU team is the same team that started 1-4. What an improvement!"

Will you U hater/ybu fans please get off the 'bama team was unmotivated kick? Seriously... the only people that say that are the people that have never played a lick of competitive sports in their lives. Individuals that attend a University and play a sport for that University (especially football in the South) would do anything to beat their own mom at a chess game. So quit yer bellyaching and own up to the fact that Utah is the more relevant team in recent history. And remember... NCAA D1 football is probably the most 'what have you done for me lately sports' on the planet. And pleeeeaaaase keep bringing up 84... it adds to your Ute Envy complex especially when there are national pundits that will label that "NC" as 'undermined' and 'questionable' and 'debatable'.

Seems like only cougar fans posting on Utah articles these days.

I will say that it must be difficult to realize that you just lost a game and most Utah fans have already moved on and no longer care for you or your fan base as a rival.

Let's face it, when you have to use TCU and Boise State to take shots at your rival after a 17-16 loss, you sound pretty pathetic. I guess that is why most of us don't like you very much and have no need for you anymore.

This Utah fan is moving on to focusing on the Vegas Bowl against a great opponent and then the Pac-12 with new and improved rivals on the horizon.

I am sure it will not be long before many others like myself realize that you are now the 9th most important game on our schedule next year.

  • Utah'95 FPO, AE

    3grandslams,

"One of the weakest bowl records ever?" Their "bowl record" is 12-3. Utah's 0.800 winning percentage is the best in college football among teams with more than 3 appearances.

You're probably suggesting that Utah's bowl opponents haven't been good. A word of advice - BYU fans shouldn't be bringing up bowl records in an attempt to insult anyone. Like Uteology pointed out, BYU is 10-17-1. Remember, the Cougars have losses to Indiana, Marshall, and Tulane in their bowl record.

Only the Crimson Tide coaches and players can tell whether they were "deflated and under motivated." What the record shows is that Utah handily won the Sugar Bowl, beating a Top 5, one-loss 'Bama in SEC territory.

As for "winning a bowl game when someone is trying to knock you out of the national championship," I give BYU credit for a great win. Just don't lose sight of the fact that "someone" was a 5-loss, unranked team.

    The Spiker,

    I love the self-depreciating humor!

Good luck Utes and Cougars. The Utes will definitely need it. And as far as BYU is concerned, it's always nice to have.

...and it's even more obvious that the number 5 ranking the utes achieved earlier this year is a source of bitterness for a fan of a team that shouldn't even be bowl eligible.

    Get over it.

Even in the confirmation that the Utah BSU matchup is a top attraction this post-season, there are the bitter and jealous detractors that continue to say the world is flat, that Obama is not a US Citizen, that the US government planned the 9-11 attacks and that the Utes are not a top 25 team.

It's Still Great to be a Ute because while we maybe the biggest point dog in a bowl game this year at least we weren't listed as the least interesting bowl of the year, according to Rivals that distinction goes to TDS we'll play our bowl and we may lose but we are in the game rated 7th in terms of national interest with the top five Being Championship bowls as a fan I am excited. it is unrealistic to think you'll win all your games but at least we have the venue and the exposure and the chance at a relevant season. in 08 there were fans bummed about the Alabama Draw and yet look at what that gave us don't hate oppertunity because the stakes are high embrace it and attack it and at the end of the day you won't be left wondering. so hate on Yners we will suffer your slings and arrows and bitter jealousy because as a Ute you just aren't that relevant to us anymore.

The BSU bowl is going to be highly watched and I would say that it is even better that the 7th rated bowl. There are many people that want to see the total and complete beat down that is about to be inflicted by the Boise State Broncos! The question that many fans and experts have is not if BSU will win but how bad the beat down will be. Bowl streak ended, top 25 ranking gone. At the end of the game the experts will still be talking about how this Utah team my have been the most overated college football team ever. My, what a bunch of nice objective comments. I am afraid that Utah is going to get their clock cleaned.I will be good for about 30 minutes. Utah's defense will play pretty good until they get tired. Kyle is a big game coach and does a nice job when he has the talent. This year he does not have enough talent. My only real question is this, Is the MUSS going to hire another stripper for this game like they did for the TCU game? Oh, I guess I lied, I have another question or two. "Get real, I rather lose by 50 than play in New Mexico vs. a 6 win team."

I guess you're getting de-sensitized to those 50 pt beat downs every year from TCU that it's no longer a big thing.

That reminds me of a kid I knew in Junior High who used to get "de-Pants'd" and "Wedgied" so often by bullies in school that he just became resigned to it and was heard to say to one of the bullies just before one of his many epic episodes, "(sigh) Okay, c'mon lets get it over with."

I guess I can see your point, once you've reached the point that you've been "wedgied" and "de-pants'd" in front of the whole school as badly as the Yewts have, you just get used to it and it's not a big deal anymore.

This is a good perspective to have and will help you enjoy your Pac 10 experience a little more. Good luck!

Critics mean nothing and do nothing and have no honor especially predictions made by critics who sit in their mom's basement but are only reliable in the act of attacking and predicting something they have no control over..

I Hope BYU puts a beat down on UTEP and congratulations on going bowling this year. I know several BYU fan / friends from Colorado that are going to the game and I am sure they will be entertained and have a good time.

That day will come when BYU doesn't beat their ranked opponent so badly that their opponent no longer looks like a ranked team after BYU is through with them! Had BYU beat Utah (although they proved to be the better team), Utah would not be ranked. Things like that happen. You would think that getting beat by the Utes and having one of the worst seasons in years would keep the Cougars off of the boards for a few days. I guess not. I'm not sure why BYU fans are so obsessed with saying Utah will lose this game. Almost every Ute fan I have talked to thinks the chance of them winning is very small. But they will say, "never count them out though".
Also, why bring up beatdowns from the season? How many times did the Cougars get beat down? Were the Utes overrated for much of the season? Clearly. But at the end of the day, they will get another shot to prove that they are better than those losses.

It's funny that Cougar fans decided to bring up 1984, and are calling that bowl game, a "national championship game".
Ute fans, you have to give the Cougars credit. They did something only 5 other teams in history have done. Beat Michigan in 1984.

    SoCal,

"through you broken down crystal ball away"

    through!?

    Are you serious?

If I were you, I'd run to the nearest school(regardless of whether it be high school, junior high, elementary, or preschool) and beg for them to take you.

For the record - I wouldn't be surpised one bit if yewties beat Boise. Boise is ranked like #9 or so right? yewties are #21 or so? I think the yewties will play all right.

    SoCal,

If you're still reading( or attempting to read), hurry on your way now....

Hopefully Utah will not lay an egg like they did the last time on national TV against TCU. If Utah wins it will be their biggest win since their last BCS bowl. Boise is beatable as demonstrated against Nevada but they are a better team than Utah this year. Utah did beat a BYU team that was better than them this year but as all the haters are thinking right now, BYU is not as good as BSU this year. Hope Utah plays out of their heads in Vegas and keeps this one close. It could be their last nationally televised game for a long time.

    @bigdaddyak

Shall we count beatdowns? Over three years Utah 3 BYU 9. So keep dreaming.

Also, 16 AP first place votes were given to Utah in 2008. So I guess not all pundits thought Bama wasn't motivated.

Using your logic I guess then your also saying that #16 Oregaon State wasn't motiviated playing BYU in Vegas after losing out on the Rose Bowl?

    @bigsoccer
Which national championship bowl game did you play in? Oh the Holiday Bowl vs 6-5 MI? Sorry, that win is slightly better than what you will do to UTEP next week. That Cougar team had a SOS of #104 this Utah team #68.

The Utes and Broncos get a little love from ESPN and the Yners start calling foul. Can't believe it.

Nice to hear byu fans smack about the 1894... I mean 1984 NC and pre 2000 top 25 finishes to prove their relevance in 2010 though. silly coogs

btw... 2 out of 3 and scoreboard!

What a bunch of thin skinned people.

BYU is going to the stinky bowl. So what.

95% of the nation thinks that Utah will lose to Boise. So what.

BYU fans (and many Ute fans) come on the article predicting a Ute loss. I don't get it personally. You won't find me posting antagonizing stuff about the U.

I am, after all, a classy BYU fan (ask anybody). I have no problem with rooting for the U in this game. I don't think that U have a chance of winning but I will still root for U.

As to the NM bowl featuring the power house UTEP losing their way into the game and BYU winning their way into the game. It may be the least interesting game in the world but it is interesting to me!

Just a newsflash to you Utes whining about Y posters on your articles ... there are just as many U fans on the Y articles.

Where to start??? How about BYU fans talking about how bad the teams Utah has played in their bowls are... and have several comment follow it post haste talking about BYU's "Championship". You can't have it both ways... either give Utah Credit for their bowl wins or don't brag about beating a 6-5 team.... More Zoobie hypocrisy!!!

Where to continue??? How about another Utah board with more comments from the haters than those in support!! Now how about a few of you pipe up about how obbsessed we are with your team...... Again.... More Zoobie hypocrisy!!

And to the Non-Zoobie haters.... Im guessing nobody here reads the Idaho Who Cares Press... so proceed... but stil, nobody cares!!! We understand that BSU is all you have to live for and after this game nobody cares about your little school for 8 more months... enjoy it while it lasts!!

steve84088... Did you see the part where I said ND was the better team that day? Overrated huh? 10-2. Beat the team - that I would bet is your team - down south. So keep up you're overrated rant... I'm sure you've used that sad excuse over the last several years including the Fiesta and Sugarl Bowl seasons. Any time Utah has a successful season it must mean they're overrated. If that's the case then I'll take overrated, bowl appearances, 10-2, 11-1, 12-0 seasons all day long.

Boise State junior quarterback Kellen Moore, his family and his coach will take a memorable but jam-packed journey around the country this week.

Moore leaves Wednesday for The Home Depot College Football Awards show at Disney World in Florida. Hell travel to New York City on Friday for the Heisman Trophy ceremony and back to Boise on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Cain and Robles (who is 0 for 1 passing this season), battle it out to determine who will start for Utah in Las Vegas.

Who is ESPN really coming to see in Vegas?

    -------------------------

    Skierelmo

College football seasons are judged as a whole, not by highlights. Utah may have an impressive bowl record, but how many of those teams were really any good?

As much as Utah fans try to bury their heads in the sand and pretend it isn't so, BEING RANKED in the final polls, is a thousand times more important than who you beat.

It doesn't matter if your report card has a couple of A's on it, if it also has a couple of F's, it's still only going to give you a C average.

Final Rankings are the final grade.

"It might be better said that your greedy decision to leave for a new conference will raise it's ugly head very soon and the pain brought with it will upset many Utahn's in future years! " Sour grapes to be sure. Utah will have a slow ramp up, but it will be up. Meanwhile BYU will be a Notre Dame wannabe. Yes, Utah is going to get killed on the 23rd, but its up from there. Where is BYU going?

And here I thought the bickering over past triumphs would simmer down after the rivalry game.... Instead BOTH BYU and Utah boards are even more filled with it. Oh well....

    To my Ute friends:

What do you think about Cain being the QB in Vegas?

(I thought it was pretty selfless of Wynn to step aside and miss out on the chance of playing in this bowl game). It is tough though going into it with a back up. At least he'll get 15 practices of being "the guy" beforehand.

Plus, Nevada has shown us that Boise isn't bullet-proof. What would you like to see your team do to win this game?

Being a BYU Girl, I root for the Utes but only follow them passively. So I would like to hear YOUR thoughts on the upcoming match-up.

    @Spiker

I for one thought your The Eldorado High School Video Club comment was hilarious! It was almost as good as the Ute fan from Springville after San Diego talking about Bronco's magic T-shirt and asking why he's been holding out on us. "Why Bronco? Why????" Thanks for the laughs!

The little cat fights are interesting. One always pauses to chuckle.

This will be a ten-point game. Boise never blows anyone out in a bowl game of this magnitude.

The score will most likely be in the twenties.

Turnovers will determine the final outcome.

ESPN does not give a rats hind end about Utah, and Boise is their little darlings

There is a media man crush on Boise & I cant for the life of me figure out why?

The motivation for the U is great. Unlike tds, Utenation wont use it to play victim and feed a ridiculous persecution complex

no one really cares about one of the weakest bowl records ever,

I care as do you or you wouldn't have mentioned it. Speaking of apathy; what about playing a mediocre Wolverine team who was running strictly on reputation back in 1984
