The hostility of the Utah-BYU fans is something I never really understood. It
is over the top, and I think it is driven by LDS vs. non-LDS issues. Pity.
It's funny because, in-state, utah and byu fans tear into each other and both
blame the other for the hostility. Nice to get an unbiased outsiders
perspective that proves BOTH sides have issues and BOTH sides are to blame.
I hope the loudmouths on this issue get the message and tone down the retoric.
Educated adults have no need to belittle or slam others' institutions. Utah is a
great place to live and, as a whole, has the most tolerant people in the nation.
Let's show everyone that Utah has two great universities, that can rival any
others in the land, in sports or any other activities. If you don't believe
that, why are you living in this great state?
re: Esquire | 7:37 a.m. Nov. 26, 2010 That would be a valid point
except for the demographics of staff, students, fans, & athletes of Utah and
BYU are similar wnough that the difference is negligible.
re: Esquired " LDS vs. non-LDS issues"Well, how bout LDS
vs. non-LDS and non eccepted (to BYU) and Inactives.Wish they would
just get on with life and enjoy the game. Both BYU and UTAH never brought up the
HOLY WAR idea. Who was it that started this word HW? And wish Urben Meyer should
have never started this Team Down South which only be mentioned at Ohio State.
Coach Patterson say: "Cougars, Ute fans should get along." And you
know what? THEY DO, for the most part. It's all the media hype that
promotes the controversy and relish the negative stuff. Heaven
knows, they sure like to publish it and repeat it over the radio and TV ad
infinitum! It keeps them selling papers and advertisements. For the most part, fans just enjoy the games and are friendly and
cordial to their opponents. It still comes back to the $$$ in the
pockets of the media.
@ DEW Cougars I grew up a BYU fan. I'm active LDS. In 1999 I went to the
Utah-USU and have never looked back . That was my last year buying BYU season
tickets. I see both sides of this RIVALRY. A lot of the dislike of BYU fans come
from the statements about us Ute fans being non LDS, non accepted (to BYU) and
inactives... GROW UP.
TCU coach Gary Patterson expressed his hope for civility in the rivalry during
this week's MWC Coaches Teleconference: on the Utah/ BYU game.. "I wish
their fans got along a lot better". Gary should worry more about TCU and
leave the BYU /Utah rivalry out of his monologue. Basically , it's none of his
business. Maybe he could put forth the same energy in getting fans to
fill the seats at the stadium. Great team , poor turn out and empty seats. To me
putting his energy and efforts in his own program would be more productive. Gary
save your wind for the hot soup as Michigan / Ohio State--Texas/ Oklahoma , USC/
UCLA have similar rivalries.TCU will take the MWC crown and I hope above
all hope that TCU as well as the other MWC schools play, ( and win) their BCS
games. Go UTES !!!
maybe if TCU would stopping beating the heck out of us BYU and Utah would be so
Re: DEWAs an active LDS, BYU grad and Utah fan, I can say you're off
base. I have many friends who fit into my category of fan.
I agree with yarrlydarb.I have lived in both Provo and Salt Lake. I
honestly never heard any animosity from either fan base towards the other, in
person. I think the media focuses on the few immature individuals who cannot/
will not see that this rivalry isn't personal and does not really measure the
greatness of either school. Most of us just simply cheer FOR our team and we
wish the other great schools in Utah the best the rest of the season. I know the only time I don't cheer for the University of Utah is when they
play the Y. But I still like them and their fans. They were my friends and
neighbors for many years ... football doesn't change that. I think
the media should stop stirring us up against each other. To the great Ute fans:
Good job this season and good luck in the PAC 12. To the great Cougar fans: Go
Cougs! (And a big Thank you to Bronco Mendenhall for all of his hard work and
perseverance this season. We love ya Coach!)
I attended and have degrees from both Utah and BYU. Dew's comments are way off
base. I am a big time Utah fan - my two years at BYU cemented that. I am active
in the church and so are most of my Utah fan friends. In fact, the activity
level of my friends is higher amongst Utah fans (meaning I have more inactive
BYU fan friends that I do inactive/non-LDS Utah fan friends). The thing that
makes the rivalry interesting is that active LDS folks pull for one side of the
other. There are return missionaries on both sidelines -- and gasp, sometimes
Utah even has more return missionaries starting. If BYU fans think about who
they banter with - it is the guy sitting next to them in elders quorum the next
day at church. To say that it is LDS vs. non-LDS and less-active is ridiculous
and quite self-righteous.
uu32 Of course to paint all of us who cheer for the Cougs as
"hypocritical" or "self-righteous" (as some Ute fans do in
the comments) is just as ridiculous.
Utah currently has 15 Utah native sons on their roster. 2011 the Utes have
with 8 verbal commits from Utah with 9 scholarships remaining. Not lose
any ? --better check your facts or Bronco should seek denial therapy.
Alexander Smithson is a 4.0 gpa junior and will attend the U along with Nate
Fakahafua. The duo more than helped Highland garner the 4A title. Who is
Bronco kidding ? Only himself and the media.
RE: TheHailstormIt is very rare that Bronco has not got a recruit
that he really wanted(this means someone he and the staff have went hard
after).....period. At times, they have started out really wanting a
player for their skills, but later cooled on them due to other criteria.
