I hope Utah wins this one. With some at SD leaning so much to bigotry and defamation, a little humility might help.

Come back kids! No not the Jazz, although Go Jazz.

Great win, even with the defense looking horrible.

But way to step up in the second half defense.

Games over, Utes won! Final score 38 to 34. I thought for sure the Utes would loose this one to. I think we just got lucky. BYU may still have a chance next week if the Utes get careless. I still wish coach Whit would let Cain play next week. I still don't have confidence in Wynn.

"I still wish coach Whit would let Cain play next week. I still don't have confidence in Wynn."

Criminy. Wynn has his best game ever and you don't have confidence in him? Other than his first pass, Wynn played exceptional tonight. The defense in the first half was atrocious - that is where the worry is.

Way to show some serious heart tonight Utes. I'm very proud of the way they fought back in the second half.

It's time to start thinking about next Saturday and putting a serious whopping on the kitty cats!!

Lucky win for the yewts. BYU will crush them next week.

Not a convincing win, but I'll take it.

Lindley absolutely shredded our secondary. Why does Whit play man-to-man on the corners yet give 15 yards cushion. He did this against TCU as well. If our DBs aren't good enough to play man then switch to zone coverage. Hope the DBs get it together by next week.

Not a fan of Jordan Wynn but he did what he had to do tonight. Zero turnovers.... Yeah!

I think the Utes should forfeit this game. There should have been a personal foul call on the last Aztec play and they would have scored a touchdown. You can't hit a quarterback on the head! The Aztec boosters are going to be ticked!

  • Spitvalve Denton, TX

Confident that BYU will thump Utah's melons next week, but congrats Utes on getting by a very good SDSU team--they are going to be in the top three of the MWC after BYU and Utah leave the conference. Brady Hoke is a great coach and they're going to give TCU and Boise fits.

You people expecting a "thump" or any type of a lop-sided game next week are just going to be disappointed.

Do you seriously think this BYU team will come into one of the most hostile environments around and blow out a team that has been ranked for nearly the entire season? Come on.

Yes, I will admit that we were ranked higher than we should have been, but that doesn't mean Utah is a pushover. Utah is a good team, and it will be tough to beat us in our own place.

Confidence in a victory is fine. Expectation of a blowout, you're dreaming.

What a fun game to watch! I'm glad to see that Wynn finally found it in him to lead a comeback win! Pass defense looked really bad though, but hey, the offense is back to where it was, so hopefully the defense will come around too. Now begins the week that both Utah and zoobie fans have been waiting for all year long!

    GO UTES!

  • Outsideview Federal Way, WA
    Nov. 21, 2010 1:25 a.m.

SDSU just cant catch a break from the refs. They really blew it by going to the long pass in the second half when short passes was working so well.

As for the refs, the last interception should have been called back and a personal foul called for striking the QB in the head. It is a call that gets made if things are going well for you. BYU has benefited from ref calls the last 2 games and Utah gets a little help on this one as well.

I wonder if SDSU will send Utah and the MWC a letter asking for the game to be forfeited?

Next weeks game definitely is not shaping up to be the gimme that I thought Utah would have several weeks ago.

Wynn runs hot and cold. I still do not have confidence in him. He may have had a great game today, but next week he may be running cold again.

Sorry, but that's how I see it.

  • Mountanman Hayden, ID
    Nov. 21, 2010 7:20 a.m.

Who was calling the play for SDSU on their last drive? They were moving the ball easily with short passes and probably would have scored and won the game but they could resist throwing deep and getting intercepted! The SDSU coaches lost that game, not the players! On the other hand, the ute defense against those long bombs was good.

Well that was a close one, exciting, nail biting...good thing Utah's defense showed up in the second half. Now it's rivalry week and all the gloves are off. Utah should win on paper but don't count on BYU just folding over and doing nothing. If anyone thinks that BYU will blowout Utah, they have their heads in the sand however, I think it will be another close game.

The defense was absolutely horrible in the first half but they came up big when it mattered most SDSU only picked up one score in the second half. The offense looked sharp last night...all in all a good win It's going to be really exciting to see Blechen grow and mature over the next three years. GO UTES

    Nov. 21, 2010 8:06 a.m.

BYU trolls, you played against the 4th string quarterback. We played against their first string QB and beat them up a lot worse than you did. Also, a lot of the yardage SDSU got last night was against ZONE, not man coverage. Sitake tried to mix it up, but neither worked too much. The Utes shut down the run completely, and made SDSU one dimensional. That was the Aztec's eventual downfall. The Utes were able to get enough pressure on the quarterback. And remember, after SDSU went up 20-3, we outscored them 35-14! That says something for the second-half defense!

  • ballfan3 Cedar City, UT

BYU had a stronger strength of schedule to start the season, Utah had a tougher one to end the season. Just show class both sides, at least on game day.

I wonder what the line is?

  • Joe Schmoe Orem, UT

This should be an interesting game.

This crazy game ! You never know when Good Luck will bounce your way. Yes It is better at times to have good luck then huge offensive numbers.

The Utes last night ended up with both. The game ended up close and exciting, this game last night with its weird slippery plays turned into a 4 point bumbling rain soaked victory.

The Saturday conference ending curtain call for both Utah & BYU will now actually have meaning.

Utah & BYU have been two of the solid programs that have kept the MWC competitive and in the national lime light for top 10 and 20 rankings.

The end of an era is here and it is sad and very cool all at the same time.

Go Utes in the PAC 12 and good luck to you "Y" fan's on the Independent circuit, we still play each other for bragging rights, nut it just will not feel the same.

I love my Utes!! What a great come from behind win and a wonderful change in momentum. When they were down 21-0, I was worried we had another blowout on our hands, but the Utes pulled it together, figured out how to defend San Diego's attack and made the big plays down the stretch. It was a beautiful thing to witness!!

Congrats to the Utes. You dodged a bullet in this game, no, you dodged about 4 bullets. SDSU was in the red zone and did not score who many times? A a blocked punt from their own end zone? The defense showed up when they had to. And a hail mary pass to end the half. Wow.

It was a nailbiter for all who followed.

Huge win for the Utes. It was nice to see them fight back and show a lot of heart yesterday. I think they beat BYU, but I'm impressed with BYU's improvement over the past month.

    Go Utes.

There are no other words to describe this game other than UGLY!! The defense could not stop anything. I am an SEC fan (GO GATORS!!) who lives in Utah. I want to see both BYU and Utah do well. In the case of the Utes I am wondering how they managed to hold TCU to only 47 points? This team was rated way to high. It is possible that BYU could beat them in a blowout. The Utes are just not that good. Their quarterback is average at best. They play like this next season in the PAC-12 and they will be 6 and 6. Coach Witt needs to rip some heads off and explain the facts of life to these kids. Very sad performance all around.

  • Igualmente Mesa, AZ
    Nov. 21, 2010 10:30 a.m.

Even Aztec fans know the Utes were ripe for the picking, but "God must truly be watching over the teams from Utah. That blow to the head blown call was a killer." says an aztecfan in the SD Union.

Now the only rematch that SDSU will ever get with Utah, will probably be in Pac12-MWC bowl games.

Utah ALWAYS plays its best game of the year against the Y and this year will be no exception. Whitingham KNOWS how to prepare for BYU and I'm afraid Heaps is going to be eaten alive up at the U on Saturday.

  • Thriller Saint George, UT
    Nov. 21, 2010 10:50 a.m.

Fun game to watch and a great win for Utah. Greg Bird made a heck of a play to block that punt. The Utes earned that victory by going out and beating SDSU at their own game. Our rush defense looks solid but there's a lot of work to be done in the secondary.

  • fender Washington, UT
    Nov. 21, 2010 11:00 a.m.

Bottom line is the Utes won, but defensively Sitake was overcommitted to getting pressure on Lindley. He was routinely bringing six and seven defenders, which required man coverage and the Utes had big matchup problems. Borges did a nice job of exploiting the Utes defensively with his man coverage patterns. Utah got its picks in zone, and dropping seven or eight consistently would have been more effective overall IMHO.

BYU doesn't have receivers as fast and athletic as Sampson and Brown, so pressure will likely be more effective against them and that's what I would expect if I were BYU.

I'm a Ute fan but not a homer. Utes will take away the Byu run game. Byu has no body close to the SDSU recivers. I see a game where Jake looks average at best. Utah 25 to 14 or less for the cougers.

    1. Utes used up their allotment of miracles.
    2. Utes have to travel home.
    3. Utes burned a LOT of energy in that one.
    4. Utah is still questionable on offense and defense.
    5. Utah is going to get CREAMED in the PAC12.
    6. BYU wins at UTAH...34-31.

    Good points Fender

Those 2 were killing us last night. Burton got beat on almost every play it seemed! I noticed that when they put in that #8 kid though (he's a freshman) they were making more plays on the ball and keeping them contained.

That play at the end that SDSU was complaining about? Lindley got up didn't he? The Utah DL was just making a play on the ball and his head got in the way. LOL. It's football not soccer.

    Bring it on Cougs!

  • TheSpiker Alpine, UT
    Nov. 21, 2010 12:03 p.m.

Utes and Cougs predicting blow-outs and domination are simply children pounding their chests because someone else might accomplish something. Certainly no one posting on these articles will be on the field next Saturday.

I think that I can safely say that no one making a prediction about victory in next week's game has a clue.

The only thing that I know about these two teams is this: I don't have any idea of what they will do against each other, (and neither do you).

Utes thinking their team was the best in the country three weeks ago sure look like idiots now, don't they. Those proclaiming the death of the Y have been proven foolish. Cougs claiming that we will crush the Utes at their stadium are clueless as well. (Advantage Utes)

Perhaps with our teams going their separate ways after this game, we will be able to get past the sibling rivalry and actually root for each other to succeed. I'd love the see the Utes kick some PAC12 butts, and MOST OF YOU should hope that the Y can succeed in its independence "mission".

    Just one Y fan's opinion.

  • Smack Jefferson City, MO
    Nov. 21, 2010 1:49 p.m.

It's good to see the Utes play with heart. The Utes have it in them--skill, desire, strength--and the two previous weeks were not representative. The showing against TCU should have been better, and they should have beat Notre Dame.

I'm not saying the Utes should have beat TCU, but I am saying that the Utes have more in them than that game showed. As for Notre Dame . . . Notre Dame is respectable, but they are not that good. Still, you have to show up every week. Anyone can beat you any given week. So Notre Dame gets the credit.

So now the season ends with BYU. Time for the Utes to get back to beating down their opponents.

"Do you seriously think this BYU team will come into one of the most hostile environments around and blow out a team that has been ranked for nearly the entire season? Come on."

"Blow out?" Win? WHy not! Except for an INT at the end it could have been 3 losses in a row. . . and NO ranking at all, not even a vote Jose.

Do I think BYU has a chance. You bet!

Have they won recently at RES? Yes.

And at one point last night it REALLY looked like two programs going in different direction. And it STILL does.

Any sideline fool could watch the last five games and see Jake Heaps getting more confident, sharper on passes and play execution and a broader vision of the field. I've seen LOTS of QBs develop in person (starting Steve Srurrier and Charles Cassey, in Fla.). . . this boy is the real deal. He has better skill than most (and in some areas all) of the former Y QBs.

Good luck Utes in the PAC 10/12/What Ever.

  • MiP Iowa City, IA
    Nov. 21, 2010 2:34 p.m.

    A few thoughts:

Wynn looked good. What more does he need to do to impress ya'll?

Many folks keep saying how dominant SDSU and that Utah was lucky to win this game, but they should consider a few things:
    1) Utah had 3x more rushing yards
    2) Utah ended up having more time of possession despite having a 12 mintute TOP deficit at the half.
    3) Utah was +3 in the turnovers (you tend to win these games)
    4) Utah special teams play was better (blocked punt, SDSU missed PAT, Smithson kick returns
    5) Utah made better adjustments at the half, and outside of the 90 yard pass play played pretty well.

So while luck played a role, it isn't necessarily the reason they won. True grit played a huge role.

With that momentum, and BYU's win streak momentum next week's game should be another classic. Fellow U fans, we need to realize the team's weaknesses have been exposed and fringe Y fans, you need to understand your recieving core in not SDSU's. Heaps may be good, but he can't catch his own passes.

Here's to a great game next week...

  • hedgehog Ann Arbor, MI

From what I hear, even after the past three weeks Brandon Burton is STILL projected 2nd or 3rd round draft pick....

What gives? Is the NFL wrong or is the Ute coaching staff putting him in a no win situation?

Both Burton and Black have sub 4.4 speed and NFL size, yet the Utes give up 524 passing yards against SDSU?

  • Friendly Smiles Big City, Utah
    Nov. 21, 2010 5:33 p.m.

I'm still skeptic about the game against BYU. Why? Because Coach Witt doesn't know any better, he keeps putting J. Wynn in the game. Coach !! wake-up, we want to win this coming Saturday. Put Terrance in the game, he is better under pressure and he isn't vain. He has better coping skills with the crowd, the opponent, and the atmosphere.

Well done Utah. It's tough regaining confidence after big losses, but I'm glad you pulled it together.

To everyone chiming in for Cain, give it a break. Terrence Cain is a great QB, but, Wynn is the starting QB for a reason. Although I did like the thought of using Cain for the short yardage situation.

To the BYU fans, thank you to those being classy. This should be a great game Saturday.

Uh huh, yep that's it... "one of the most hostile environments around". Yeah we all saw how intimidated those camo uniforms, blackout crowd and muss were to TCU. Made a huge difference didn't it?

Bring your best game and let's see what happens. It's the Clash of the Cupcakes.

Both teams have had their problems so it's up to the QB and the team to hammer it out. Glad your QB got his confidence issues resolved because I don't want you fans claiming some mental disabilty issue when BYU comes out ahead next weekend.

But more important than this. Will the memorial for NC Utes 2010 be before the game or at half time?

  • Alpha Chicken Orem, UT
    Nov. 21, 2010 7:58 p.m.

Utah got the monkey off their back last night and once the offense got rolling the defense could settle in and make some adjustments That made a big difference in the second half. As for BYU, Heaps has been looking better but against poor teams that allowed the run game to work. He won't have that against Utah. BYU's recievers are small and Utahs defense is quicker. And yes, RES is a very hostile environment. Remember Max Halls performance there in 2008? If the defense can get sacks, it will be a rought night for him. That being said, I like Heaps, hes gonna be a great quarterback.

    re: outsideview

Really? Sure the Utes got away with a personal foul on the quarterback but San Diego deserved to lose after their punter dropped a snap and their quarterback threw two bad picks in the 4th quarter. The SDSU fans are good at blaming the refs but in reality their team had the Utes beat and gave that game away.

Also "BYU has benefited from ref calls the last two games"???? 49-10 and 40-7. Yeah the Cougars sure needed to have the refs help the last couple weeks. Did you see the game yesterday? Those refs were definitely not pro Cougars.

I don't think anyone betting on Saturday's game has a clue. I have no idea whether to expect a Ute blowout, a Cougar blowout, or a close game based on what I've seen from both teams this season. However, based on past seasons I think its safe to say this one will go down to the wire!

It should be fun to watch but lets remember its just a game and everyone deserves to be treated with respect no matter who they cheer for.

Utah had one game against a very good team that jumped out on them early and cruised followed by a let-down game. They righted the ship Saturday and I expect no problems with a 6-5 mediocre team. All the chest thumping in the world doesn't change the fact that the past few games TDS has had the cupcakes. Now you come in to RES and play a better than you think, pumped up Ute team with the muss behind them. Did you not notice that that same SDSU team put up 35 on the best D in the country? The receivers on that team are that good. Utah made adjustments and were fine. LaVell is still retired and your receivers aren't that good. Utah 42-TDS 21

  • Vegas Las Vegas, NV
    Nov. 23, 2010 3:42 p.m.

David, unless the Yewts make some major improvements in their secondary, Heaps is gonna be throwing to wide open receivers all day long. Oh, and BYU led the whole game against that same SDSU team that had a lead on the Yewts until their offense fell apart in the 4th. BYU has a great running defense, and all the Yew has is a running team, so good luck getting 42 points.

LaVell is still retired and Bronco is up 3-2 against Whittingham and still knows how to disassemble your offense and now knows your weak secondary.

    BYU: 27
    Yewtah: 24
