Panhandling is the inevitable result of charitable organization's failure to
meet the beer, cigarette, and drug needs of the panhandlers.
"Suppose that in this community there are ten beggars who beg from door to
door for something to eat, and that nine of them are imposters who beg to escape
work, and with an evil heart practice imposition upon the generous and
sympathetic, and that only one of the ten who visit your doors is worthy of your
bounty; which is best, to give food to the ten, to make sure of helping the
truly needy one, or to repulse the ten because you do not know which is the
worthy one? You will all say, administer charitable gifts to the ten, rather
than turn away the only truly worthy and truly needy person among them. If you do this, it will make no difference in your blessings, whether
you administer to worthy or unworthy persons, inasmuch as you give alms with a
single eye to assist the truly needy."~ Brigham Young
Obviously, "Lowonoil" obviously has never volunteered at a place such
as Salt Lake Homeless Shelter where I've never seen beer, cigarettes and drugs
doled out.More right-wing selfishness from the Hannity, Limbaugh, Beck
LOL, that whooshing sound you heard was my point sailing right over your head.
Of course shelters don't hand that stuff out. That's why people panhandle - to
get what they really want that charities won't give them.I'm not stongly
opposed to people marinating themselves with toxic chemicals if they choose to
do so. I just have a problem with them obtaining those chemicals in a way that
makes the development of attractive, pleasant walkable urban communities
impossible. I doubt that that's a perspective I share with many in the
"Hannity, Limbaugh, Beck crowd".
Before I help someone, I like to know them... and know of their need. That's
why I focus FIRST on helping friends, family and neighbors who I KNOW have
special needs... instead of just giving money to strangers... the Government...
or organizations... and expecting them to do it on my behalf. After
these people I know are taken care of... I give to organizations, foundations
and groups that help the needy and do medical research.Of course I
support the needy through my contributions to the government as well... that's
not really optional.
"Lowonoil" makes a pretty large leap assumming the person on the
street begging, is just in it for the booze and the drugs. But this is standard
operational procedure of those who call themselves conservatives today who are
the absolute best and conflating:Ie., liberal/socialist/communist are all
the same thing just as begging, drugs and booze are also the same thing.Pretty open minds, eh? No confusing black-or-white thinking here. No,
LOL | 10:20 a.m.Do you really LIVE in Utah???Because you
used to brag about living in Live-and-let-live California, and said you wouldn't
even VISIT Utah.If you live in California... You've probably never
REALLY work in the Salt Lake Homeless Shelter. So how could you see
them doling out beer, cigarettes and drugs there... If you've never worked
there???I have worked there, and I can verify your assumption is
correct though. They don't dole out that stuff there. It just amazes
me how often you pretend you live and work in Utah!It sorta detracts
from your credibility though.Hannity, Limbaugh, and Beck told me to
say that BTW...
Sad to read such childish postings regarding the underserved in our community.
Sadder still are those that have such so anger and hatred for the needy that
they must label them druggies or leeches while referring to those who care about
the poor "do-gooders" or "kumbaya liberals."Such is
the power of the right-wing talk-show hosts and the sad types they attract.
LDS Lib,I doubt the salvation army, SL Rescue mission, Utah Food
Bank, homeless shelters, or any of the other myriad of similar organizations
were there when Brigham made that statement. And the panhandlers are not going
door-to-door.LOLThere are some, not all, of the homeless who
refuse to go to the shelters because they are not allowed to drink or do drugs
there. So the best way to help the deserving poor, rather than to
facilitate destructive behavior, is to support the organizations such as the
Salvation Army or SLC Rescue Mission who know best how to sift out the deserving
poor from the abusers and manipulaters. Dollars donated there go further than
dollars given to individual beggars and therefore do more good.If
you have volunteered at such a place, or made donations there, thank you.
Panhandlers steal from the truly needy. We no longer live in a society
where the hungry have to beg on the streets for food.Panhandling is no
longer necessary. When you are hit up tell the panhandler that you have
donated to the shelter.
