It makes you realize how good the MWC would have been if Utah, BSU, BYU and TCU
plus a trade of Nevada and Fresno for Wyoming and CSU (or New Mexico) would have
been if everyone would have stayed. Like everything these days,
lots of changes are happening. Lets see what it is like in 3 yrs.
Yep, Yep, Yep. It's what I've been saying all along. If the Utes
can't beat the best of the lowly MWC how does this translate for next year? The
very Las Vegas Bowl the many have been disparaging might be the only bowl
available for the Utes.Competition is going to weigh pretty tough in
the Conference of Champions and today the Utes were weighed and measured and
found lacking.I've said a 7-5 season in the past. I'm lowering it to
.500 now that things have been exposed.
Poll questions:1) The Utes have been exposed as a so-so team. 8
wins against mediocre competition isn't so impressive. When the Utes came up
against real competition, they were not up to the challenge. 2) The
Pac-12 will be tough and I doubt very strongly they will be able to pull off a
top-3 finish, especially their first year. They have played a few Pac-10 teams
these past years and have done well, but that is not the same as being in the
league and playing that competition level week in and week out. I
doubt they'll be able to recruit at a high-enough level to get the talent they
need to finish in the top 3 year in and year out. Occasionally, yes, but I
expect the Utes to be an average Pac-12 team at best.3) TCU is the
real deal. They have proven that they are a complete team and can compete with
anybody. I think they deserve a shot at the championship game. If they don't
get it, then it proves once again that the BCS is flawed and must be replaced
with a playoff!
Lets not blow one lose out of proportion. sure it was a blowout but the Utes are
still having a great season. i am still a believer!GO Utes!
A Tale of Two CitiesNovember 6, 2010"Biggest Game in
State History" at RES#3 TCU (9-0) vs #5 Utah(8-0)Attendance =
46,522"Meaningless Game" at LESBYU(3-5) vs UNLV(1-7)Attendance = 61,283Even in a rebuilding year and still fighting to
become bowl eligible, BYU fans still show up to support their team.It would be interesting to see what the attendance figures would have been
like if the records and stakes had been reversed. One thing we do
know:When BYU played its "Biggest Game in State History" against the
#1-ranked, defending national champion Miami Hurricanes, the Cougars thoroughly
outplayed THE U and won the game, 28-21.(Everyone who watched the
game knows that BYU dominated much more than the final score indicates.)When Utah played its "Biggest Game in State History" against the
#3-ranked TCU Horned Frogs, the U was thoroughly outplayed and humiliated on
their home field, 7-47.
Utah was exposed, yes. But about 115 other FBS teams probably would be
manhandled by TCU too. Let's be reasonable. I don't think this shows that Utah
is unfit for the PAC-12 all of a sudden, because I don't think there's a team in
the PAC-12 that TCU wouldn't beat, including Oregon. Maybe all this talk from
Utah fans about stepping in and being a dominant power next year in the
conference can finally die down a bit, hopefully. They're obviously not the
elite team or program some were thinking they were. But they're not pitiful or
incapable of competing in that conference either. I didn't glean enough from
this single game to thoroughly convince me one way or the other about them. What
if they win out and finish 12-1? Is everyone still going to think they're a
mediocre team? I just hope the criticisms and the embellished praises of Utah
are tempered now going forward after this game
Tough loss to a seemingly great TCU team. I hope that a road win against a
strong Utah team will generate a few more first place votes. As a BIG
BYU fan I have been impressed with Utah's season and this loss is a setback, but
a victory next week against Notre Dame and then another against San Diego State
will setup a final MWC loss to BYU.Here's my future dream for the
breakup of BCS and a national cry for playoffs. Utah wins the PAC-12 finishing
the season with one loss and playing in the Rose Bowl. Boise State winning the
MWC undefeated and playing in the Fiesta Bowl. TCU going undefeated and playing
for the national championship angainst an undefeated indepedent BYU and of
course BYU winning 57-0.That should get everybody's attention. It's just mindgames.
In answer to the questions:No (as stated they are better than that, but
not a top-10 team). Yes (3rd is reasonable). Yes (if either Auburn or Oregon
loses).I would love to see BYU face Utah's schedule year-in
year-out. Alas, the Pac-12 chose Colorado (the new doormat of the league) over
BYU. I hope BYU can come up with great independent schedules for the
future with 8-10 really good games every year.
Holy cow! One loss and people are already condemning the U next year! You can't
judge an entire future season off of one game when the team will have that much
more experience. Who knows? They may get trounced, or they may dominate. And to Mr. Solomon, everyone knows that LES is much bigger than RES. And
you're quoting scores from the "glory days" of BYU just makes your fan base look
nieve. If your team has to live in the distant past, that just means there isn't
much to cheer about in the present (your team still isn't bowl eligible and has
been condemned to the Las Vegas Bowl for how many years? -although it looks like
that's where the U is headed this year.)
The only thing missing was that obnoxxxxxous train horn the frogs blow off after
every score at home... Utes didn't just get run over ,, they got hit by a train.
Utah's survival depends heavily on Whittingham sticking around. This program is
not a traditional power and will not be able to recruit directly against USC,
ASU and Oregon. The facilities are mediocre, and the fan base is "fair weather".
The last two coaches (Meyer and Whittingham) have brought the U to it's recent
success. Meyer has already moved on and I doubt the UofU can pay Whittingham
enough money to stay loyal when programs like Tennessee are willing to drop 4
Million a year.
Still can't stop thinking about '84 solomon? BYU fans only show up when they
know they'll win. That's why they wouldn't like a move to the PAC-12 because
they would rather be a winner in a bad conference than have a challenge in a
good conference. As for the Las Vegas bowl, I guess when we are
mediocre we'll go to the bowl that BYU went to when they were their best. Ya, we got our butts kicked by a #3 team. We're we over rated? It seems
like it, ONe thing that is for sure is that TCU is really good.
OK, perspective people. It was one game, and TCU is one heck of a team. And I
don't care if Utah was playing football at the level equivalent of New Mexico,
going to the Pac-10 when invited is ALWAYS a good idea. Football
aside, for the U of U to now be associated with some top notch schools through
the Pac-10 is a huge win for the university as a whole.
Meh, I'm not seeing the logic here. Yes, we got waxed by TCU last year, then
went on to wax a PAC10 team in our bowl. It wouldn't surprise me to see the same
thing again this year.I don't think this game is a tell tale sign of
anything that will happen in the PAC. The PAC isn't full of TCUs. So, put down
the stick sub-.500-losing-to-USU BYU fans - you've competed for your last
conference championship. Utah will be fine in the PAC. We'll win some and lose
some - just like every good school in a good AQ conference. The Ute
future is bright!
Levi, lets be fair. The game was sold out. Rice Eccles is a smaller stadium.
Okay already. I have to admit, the unrepentant side of me smiled yesterday every
time I got an update on the game, but one loss to the team that may well end up
being the national champ does not make Utah a bad team. Or so so either. I DO believe that SOME Utah fans got a little too wrapped up in how
wonderful everything had been going, forgetting that sooner or later, a loss
would come. When you have earned a spot on the national stage, it makes any
loss embarrassing. And when you lay an egg like yesterday...The sun
will come out, Utah will still have a very good season, but yesterday planted
two seeds of hope for us cougar fans.
@TomB1382...No, nobody in Utah got the license number because they were and are
still in shock! They were still dreaming of being National Champs and then going
into the Conference of Champions and winning it again there. Now when they close
their eyes all they can see is blackness. They were right in calling
a "black-out" They just didn't know they were going to be knocked out and see
nothing but black and then wake up to being black and blue.
TCU is as good as Oregon and Oregon is the best in the PAC 10. Utah was
overrated and the bandwagon was full but the PAC isn't that scary. The MWC has
had 4 teams ranked this year as well.
I suspect that game yesterday was a horrible combination of TCU bringing their
very best and Utah just having a very off game. It makes no sense. Utah
destroys Iowa State 68-27. The yesterday, ISU takes Nebraska to OT. Weird.
One thing is for certain: there are a LOT of humble Ute fans this
morning. No matter what your team does now, you're probably going to the same
Las Vegas bowl you were disparaging last year. I would assume the Utes are
still better than BYU this year, but don't get too comfortable about that game
Rock says, "Yet if the Utes don't mess up, they'll still play in the Las Vegas
Bowl, home of the Mountain West champ." I wouldn't put money on that, Brad. All
things considered, the Cougars didn't look a tenth as bad against the Frogs as
did the Utes. As poorly as it would appear from the Y's won-loss record, overall
they've played better teams than the U. As titillating and flashy as a move to
the PAC-12 seemed, it now appears the row-to-hoe to get to a NC isn't going to
be close to the cakewalk the team on the hill thought it would be. As BCS-ready
as Thompson thought his MWC was just twelve months ago, after TCU finds a new
home, it'll be nothing to turn your head to look with BSU versus the pygmies. As
risky as the road to independence is purported to be, the more it looks like not
a half-bad way to go.
TCU should be playing for the NC or there is no justice in life (unless they
lose a game of course).
I guess Utah was not as good as we thought and BYU better than we thought. Utah
still has a good team, maybe not great. One has to think maybe BYU can put up
some fight at the Utah game. BYU is going independent for one reason. 8 times
My answers to your 3 questions are: Yes, No, Yes. Utah should have stayed in the
MWC where it has a better fit. It will likely end up in the lower half of the
new conference most future years.
The Utes may not win the PAC 12 but they will not be the bottom feeders. Even
this year they would be better than most of the Pac "12" finishing in the top 3
or 4. Yes I feel a little jealous but I wish them all the luck. Their
prospects for the future seem a little brighter than for the cougars. We are
more like a ship adrift. I would rather have a steady and clear course ahead.
It takes faith to drive into the unknown, but destined we are and it’s
time to hold on for the ride.
From a BYU fan - the Utes will bounce back. Yes, TCU was better, but Utah will
finish strong. But let's hope not THAT strong, especially the last game of the
Wow,I thought the U would lose this game, but c'mon guys. By 40?
Are you serious. They played scared & intimidated. All that hard work to get
into the national spot light the past few years, and now because of this game, I
think we took 3 steps back. BCS voters will think twice about ranking the Ute's
so high again. I'm pretty disappointed. BYU fans have a right to rub it in.
We are eating crow. Now, I'm not so sure what is the smarter thing to do.
PAC-12 going 7-5 or Independent going 10-2. I think our little brothers down
south have bested us again. I'm eating crow with vegetables this morning. I saw a piece late last night on ESPN where they said how bad this game
hurt Utah in the National spot light. One commentator said he didn't think the
Ute's were even a top 20 team. I know its one game, but man this was as bad as
it gets. How do we go into South Bend and beat ND? Pull it together Ute's.
Stop reading how great you are and just play.
ShylockHow about a score and records from just the recent past?Like 26-23Four Top 25 finishes to twoFour 10+ win
seasons to twoTwo MWC championships to one (it's guaranteed now,
Bronco will finish with more MWC championships than Kyle)Three of the last
fourWhose fault is it that RES seats almost 20,000 fewer than
LES?The reason that LES is much bigger than RES is 10 years of
football success in the 70's and early 80's created a demand for a bigger Cougar
Stadium. BYU has continued that success for the last three decades. The reason that RES only seats 46,000 is there's never been a demand for a
bigger stadium. Utah didn't have much of a team and couldn't even fill 46,000
seats until 2004.
Utah is pretty bad against great teams, just a bit better than average teams. I
still put them in the T20 in the country till BYU takes them down. That isn't
so bad.To say the Utes have to be worried about going into the PAC12
is just as reactionary panicing about BYU going independent. They both are
going to be much better in the long run. Utah and BYU will have better
opponents and harder to earn winning seasons. I am looking forward to it.
It's not that Utah is that bad people. It's that TCU is that good. Lets hope
that TCU is given a chance to prove it with a national championship game. Go
Alabama crush Auburn !!!! What irks me is that the PAC12 is not going to pay
Utah a full share of television earnings untill 2015 costing the school millions
while Colorado gets immediate full share next year. Search "Ted Miller Utah and
Colorado don't enter as equals".
Just wondering...how the Pac12 feels about getting a team that has finished 3rd
or worse seven of the last ten years in the MWC? Could it be eight of eleven
this year? The only saving grace is that Colorado is even worse...I'm
looking forward to seeing the Utes in the Las Vegas Bowl for years and years to
Elgabacho"BYU fans only show up when they know they'll win."Can you back up your pointless comment? We travel well, we average over
60,000 during our worst year in 30 years. When the new Cowboy stadium was
hosting its inaugural game the Y was invited to play Oklahoma (a game we were
supposed to get killed in) and we sold all of our tickets and more in a packed
stadium.Please reply with your rebuttal.
I know it is all about match-ups but looking at yesterday and similar teams
played.BYU didn't lose as bad to TCU in Fort Worth as Utah did in
their home staduim.BYU laid a bigger shalacking on UNLV than Utah
did a few weeks ago.Where Utah barely scraped by against Air Force,
I feel SD State has a good chance to whip Utah. If BYU gets lucky, Utah is
going to the Poinsettia Bowl again.
Funny how it is all Ute haters on here and no tcu fans. I say to all
tcu fans: CONGRADULATIONS!!!!TCU took Utah to the "woodshed" there
is no doubt about it. Out played Utah in every facet of the game except maybe
the punting :) If they win out and do not get a shot at the big one, the BCS is
going down!To all cougs who are yacking it up:The Utes
will finish 11-1 and mop up the field with Jake Heaps. (They'll have a bit of
frustration to get out)Go Utes!
I find it funny how quickly people are suddenly jumping all over the Utes (I'm
looking at you Rock and all the U haters posting on here). They have an 8-1
record with the one loss coming to the #3 team in the nation. They beat then-#15
Pitt, who will probably (sadly) wind up in a BCS bowl and an Air Force team who
dismantled BYU and gave Oklahoma everything they could handle. The
Utes are still far and away the best football team in the state, BYU is 3rd at
best. TCU is a great team who matches up very well to Utah. The Frogs deserve a
chance at the NC just like the Utes did in 2004 and 2008.I'm not
worried about my Utes in the PAC 12. USC is the only obstacle in our division
and they're ineligible next year. Yeah the Utes will probably have an off game
or two and lose to a UCLA or Arizona but they will be contenders for next year's
PAC 12 title.
You made your deal with the Devil. Not every team in the Pac-10 is as good as
TCU, but no team is as bad as UNLV,Wyoming, CSU and New Mexico. 500. at best
Utes fans, you'll be alright. You have a very young team that will be good next
year. Heck, you're good this year. But remember that TCU lost 4 studs to teh NFL
as well last year. They reload now. TCU returned 17 starters from last year's
team and has lost once in 2 years. No offense, but I have no idea
why anyone thought Utah had a chance to win this game. Nobody who saw that game
last year and knows this TCU team this year thought that could happen. I haven't
seen Patterson this calm before a game in 10 years. He knew it all week long. I
think Whit did too.You guys keep ripping Boise. I don't get it. They
are VERY good. In 2 years, Boise's only loss? TCU. In 2 years, TCU's only loss -
Boise. Win out Utes. And then turn the Pac Whatever on it's ear. Im
rooting for you and am going to miss our mini rivalry with you guys. It's been
fun. We deserve a shot at the NC if Auburn loses. If we don't get
it, scream for a playoff!
I'm glad reporters are taking Utah to the woodshed, after all they did spend the
entire week ignoring reality and dropped the "objective" requirement for
journalist for a week. Oh and Utah is the best team in the
state...this year. Certainly wasn't the case last year and won't be the case in
the future. Enjoy success while you have it but please stop the fantasies.
Fortunately, the PAC12 isn't as forboding as one might think. Colorado and
Arizona State qualify as New Mexico and UNLV types. the Utes will play them
every year and cross over games against Washington State might equal CSU. USC
sanctions will hurt for a couple of years and they won't be dominant under
Kiffin. The Utes schedule has been pretty tough week in and out until this year.
But hey, look who's leading the Big East--- Pittsburgh. TCU will crash the
National title game and BYU is picking up some steam. Playing in the PAC 10 this
year would be pretty equal to the schedule they already have been playing. Not
much difference between Oregon and TCU i'm afraid.
@ Jrifkin48, I totally agree, Utah's success---like everyone else's---depends a
lot on having a good coach. I would have loved to have seen Whittingham take
the BYU job in 2005. I don't know Kyle personally, or anything like that, but I
also would not overlook the fact that the State of Utah has a funny way of
keeping people around (take Jerry Sloan for example, not to mention LaVell,
etc.). I would imagine that Kyle's family is nice and comfortable right where
they are, and Kyle might be able to see that the grass isn't necessarily greener
on the other side of the fence. There are also other football coaches in
similar circumstances (Boise St.'s Peterson and TCU's Patterson) that have
withstood the "temptation" to upgrade. Who know's, its all speculation on my
Nothing will help Utah focus like a little compelled humility. If the Utes
resolve to never let this happen again - ever - they will be a better team for
it.I'm a BYU fan, and will be rooting for the Y in the upcoming
game, but I will hope the best for Utah in the PAC, I think they will do all
Rock, there is not a single team on the U's home schedule next year that the it
is not better than this year. The media living in the past glories of a faded
conference is la la about the PAC-10 conference and its major cities (mostly
with steep budget deficits, but it is teams that play and the U will be a very,
very good and competitive member of the PAC-12.
Utah should be worried? Why? They can beat every team in the PAC-10 this year
except perhaps Oregon and Stanford; and guess what? Neither of those are on the
2011 schedule. If Utah should be worried WHAT ABOUT COLORADO? They
just lost to the worst team in the Big-12? How worried should they be?Speaking of worried; what about BYU? Their performance this year has not been
real good. Next year they want to play even better teams as an independent?
They'll still need the perfect season to go to a BCS bowl, and being independent
won't get them to that level faster. In the end which decision will
come out best?Utah to the PAC-12 or BYU to Independency. The school in Provo clearly over-reacted and over reached.
The Pac-10 is consistently over-rated. Having more members of the press in your
area does not give you better teams. Utah is going to do great in the Pac-10.
utahcountyute Cedar Hills, UT "Funny how it is all Ute haters on here and
no tcu fans."It not really as funny as it is just. Fans, such as
yourself have earned the hatred. Now, just deal with it, rather than
complaining. You have the attention, albeit negative, but you have the
attention. The Woodshed?Utah crossed the 50 once, and in
the third quarter. That's not being taken to the woodshed. The Utah spin is
underway.Laser, there is only one way for Utah to prove they are the
best team in the state. Once they do, you get all props and no arguements. But
you do it on the field, the same way you did it one time in the past four years.
Until then, stop talking about being the best, when you get over the 50 once
against TCU.I love Ute fans... Bark, bark, bark, and no bite.Let me know if you don't end up third or fourth in the MWC.It's where you end up, not where you say you will.
B, Iowa state is the little brother to Nebraska and wanted to give them their
best game. Nebraska was without their starting QB and best DB, not to mention a
few others. It's like cute USU kids wanting to beat up on big brother, but big
brother doesn't give a hoot to what USU does ever. The Iowa State fan base is
exactly the same..just watch the game and you'd see that. They are so full of
hate towards Nebraska you feel embarrassed for them. Don't compare Utah to
Nebraska, because those are two totally different situations.
Welcome to the Pac 12 Utah fans!Duck Fan.
