TCU is going to be the Utes biggest hurdle to going undefeated, and the 2010 Horned Frogs aren't the same team Horned Frogs team the Utes barely beat in 2008.

Everything comes down to Saturday, and if the Utes play sloppy like they did during the second half of the Air Force game, bye bye undefeated season, hello Las Vegas Bowl.

Dang that Colorado State... robbed us Aggies (Utah State) from three consecutive "Largest Win for the Utes during a U undefeated game season" award. Grrr. USU has a legacy to preserve!

One of three things happens this weekend.

1st - Utah Wins and will be ranked second in the BCS.

2nd - Utah barely loses and will still make a BCS game.

3rd - Utah loses big and drops below all other one loss teams and it's Las Vegas.

It will be interesting to see how it works out.

One of the legless arguments Ute haters always use is that “Utah had a couple of great seasons but nothing else”. In reality Utah has been a good/great program for more than 15 years. The “flash in the pan” dogma has become stale.

Just when the local media and tds say the “Utes have peaked” — they climb to the next level

If the Utes finish this season out then this team will have to be considered the best of all time. That will be a short lived title because with the increased recruting base that being in the pac 12 will bring the Utes are poised to win there first National Championship in there 2nd year in the Pac 12! Remember this post when it comes true! ;)

Go ahead byu fans start hating!

    ... take it Mick.

"U can't always get 'whatchu' want"

Well Ute fans there you go. That low SOS will keep the Utes from getting to the big dance and it's a moot point anyway when you lose a big game like this weekend.

The game last weekend at AFA showed us what kind of performance to expect when real competition shows up to play.

I can't imagine the excitement at BCS HQ. They are practicing now and on Saturday afternoon, with puppy dog tears in their eyes and in perfect unison they will issue a heartfelt BCS 'buh bye' to the 'little brother', wannabe NC, Utah Utes.

It was a great run boys. Maybe, with some luck, you'll pull out a Las Vegas Bowl. How sweet it is!

I've said it since WEEK ONE. Utah will be the 2010 national champions and go undefeated for a THIRD TIME.

TCU is good, but with the game in SLC not a chance tcu gets a win.

    Utah 34
    TCU 17

Utah does have a good program for the MWC, but will find life different in the PAC 12 when they face tougher competition. So, enjoy this year, and hopefully you get another patsy in the BCS.

Cool look back at what has been accomplished over six years by the Utes! Can't really make a comparison until they finish up this year though.

Nice to see the "haters" out in force too. You know... there is an ariticle you might want to check out about SDSU accusing the Y of cheating. Take a look, it is really the only thing to read about the byu football program right now.

I think it's funny that the cougs on the east coast are made just like the ones here. The only difference is that most of the intelligent cougar fans stopped the whole "you beat a patsy team" in the BCS when we dominated Alabama. I think it's funny that BYU has never even come close to BCS game and they are still making fun of the fact that we only beat PItt on our FIRST BCS game. Have fun being independent!

Sorry to throw cold water on your "legless" argument, but Utah's record doesn't support your claims hedgehog.

Utah has been mediocre to good since 1994, but prior to 2004, 1994 was the only year in Utah's entire history that could remotely be considered "great".

    1994 10-2 #10/#8 WAC 2nd tie with BYU #18/#10--Great
    1995 7-4 1st--Mediocre
    1996 8-4 3rd--Good
    1997 6-5 4th--Mediocre
    1998 7-4 5th--Mediocre
    1999 9-3 1st tie with BYU--Good
    2000 4-7 5th--Bad
    2001 8-4 3rd--Good
    2002 5-6 5th--Bad
    2003 10-2 #21/#21 1st--Good

"The sad thing about this game is that it can only be found on CBS-C. Thank you MWC. It should be the game of the week."

Actually the blame is mostly on Comcast. The Mtn is a channel all subscribers get with their basic subscription, CBS-C requires you to upgrade your subscription, so if a few big games a year are televised on CBS-C then they find most subscribers call to upgrade.

It is always great when the Cable Company is also the owner of the station that broadcasts your favorite college team, no way they would ever use their position to profit.

I can't figure out why BYU fans keep posting smack about Utah. What do you have to boast? All you can do is talk about Utah's 'future' losses and your own team's success decades in the past. I get it, BYU ruled the 80's...along with Boy George. I think it's time to move on. You're even more pathetic than your team.

The sadest thing about this game is the fact that while Utah plays TCU in a HUGE game, we play UNLV. Next year will be worse because EVERY game at Utah will be big while BYU will be plaing a WAC schedule (which is even worse than a MWC schedule).

anti BCS and other Cougar fans,

As a Ute fan, I concede your point - the Utes have been "historically mediocre." That being said, Utah is still historically better than BYU.

Don't forget - Utah's overall record against BYU is 53—34—4. If you're looking at things "historically," you can't place more emphasis on one period over another.

Also, each team has enjoyed winning streak of 9 games maximum and is tied 5-5 over the past 10 meetings.

Let's sum up: historically, Utah is better than BYU. If you're talking recent events (as in last 10-15 years), Utah has done far more on the national stage than BYU.

If Utah isn't the more exciting program, why are all you Cougar fans commenting on Utah articles?

Utah wins, then BSU moved up to #2 for 1 week. Then win again (sdsu) both will drop. Win against ND then maybe moved up to #2 for 1 week. Win against BYU will drop a little or BYU wins, drop dead utah! Sorry, bcs poll is FLAWED and why worry, was that what Kyle Whit said of what he believes about polls? All Whit worried about what happened at the end of post season.

With Utah, it's the coach that propels the program and keeps the program competitive. Utah will be lucky to hang on to him.

Maybe he should go down and help the Y at the end of the season rivelry and get it's program revived.
    I would like that.

Utah has been a good team since 2003 with two great seasons. Even if they lose to TCU and win out this year it will be another great season. Any 1 loss season should be considered great. Speaking of undefeated seasons. If Utah, TCU, Boise and yes, even the 1984 BYU team had played in one of the top 4 conferences it is highly unlikely that any of the teams would have gone undefeated. There is a loophole that the BCS did not forsee that BYU took advantage of and so have the "big 3" recently; Weak schedules and too little effect on the human polls. I wish the Utes the best and it would be fantastic to see them in the NC game this year(or TCU or Boise). The Utes should be able to ride some good recruiting and past success to future success in the PAC but, again; it is highly unlikely they will go undefeated in any given year and unless they start the year ranked in the top 8 or maybe 10, even one loss will likely keep them out. Reality check.

So, Mr. "Anti BCS" your whole stance is that Utah "only" had 4 great seasons in 16 years? That's not to mention all of the others you deem "good" over that stretch. That looks like a pretty good resume to me: we're "good" or "great" half the time, with only two truly "bad" years in that span.

How many "Great" years has Texas had in that same stretch? What about Alabama? Notre Dame? Michigan? USC? Auburn? Florida? UCLA? Washington? How about your beloved BYU?

I think we're doing just fine. If we only average one "great" season every four years, I can totally live with that. How's your team doing?

    @butters

I find it ironic that Yewt fans have enjoyed putting down the LVB for the past several years and now, I'm guessing, they're anticipating another blowout loss to TCU so they're trying to pimp the LVB as a great bowl game when TCU gets the BCS game invite and the Yewts get overlooked?

Wow, that's quite a turnaround Yewt fans have made.

(cough *yewt troll* cough) I'm not sure why you used the pronoun "we" when referring to BYU. Shouldn't you be using "they" instead?

Anyways, to your point about BYU's schedule for next year, what you're saying basically is that BYU will have start having a typical cream puff Utah schedule going forward so I'm guessing you're thinking that they'll have a better shot at going undefeated more often just like the Yewts?

That's an interesting perspective and one that I hadn't considered. Thanks for pointing that out. You might just be right on that. It is something to look forward to instead of scheduling a lot of ranked teams. Afterall, if it works for Boise State and Utah it should work for BYU.

Believe me we are NOT trying to"pimp the LVB as a great bowl game"!!!!! The fact that the LVB is the best we could get if we lose to TCU is exactly one of the reasons we are so happy to be in the PAC-12 next year!!! Imagine an 11-1 Utah team playing the 6th place PAC -10 team in the LVB this December!!! What a travesty!!!!! Not the worry though, four more wins this year and let's see where we are playing come January 2011!!!!

  • Go Utes Salt Lake City, UT
    Nov. 3, 2010 12:32 p.m.

What a silly title for an article. Doesn't every team want an undefeated season every year? I would be thrilled if the Utes go undefeated, but I do not expect it and never have (unlike some teams who arrogantly proclaim to be on a quest for perfection). The Utes will hopefully play their best this Saturday and in their remaining games. Maybe they will win, maybe they will lose. I am confident that while many reporters and fans are caught up in some sort of premature euphoria dreaming of BCS bowls, that the Ute team themselves is taking a different approach and focusing solely on the task at hand--give TCU our best shot.

On another note, BigYak14 (who posted around 7:00 a.m. this morning), why on earth would you take some shot at students living at home? I am trying to follow how this is relevant to the article. If you think that makes BYU students living in dorms or off-campus housing better people, more power to you. If mommy and daddy are paying for your dorm, what's the difference anyway? Anyway, interesting comment from you.

As a long time Cougar fan, I'm not going to dispute the fact Utah have an amazing football program, and I'm sure that will continue as they move into the PAC 12.

I can't help but wonder though, how many of you UTE fans are simply FAIR WEATHER fans who are more interested in knocking BYU than in cheering on the UTES?

Look at your men's basketball team. When Majerus was head coach, and the Utes were kicking butt, they couldn't sell tickets fast enough. BUT NOW, after some tough years, the gymnastics team has bigger attendance numbers than basketball.

If the football team has a few losing seasons, will Rice-Eccles empty out like the Huntsman Center?

@Game For Any Fuss 11:22 - You said, "If Utah isn't the more exciting program, why are all you Cougar fans commenting on Utah articles?"

For the same reason Ute fans comment on BYU articles. WE'RE RIVALS! That's what rivals do.

Interesting that byu has had 5 "bad" seasons of six or more losses to only 2 by Utah in the same time frame. Pretty telling.

Along with that, Utah has had 2 "great" seasons to 1 for byu. I would only list 1996's 11-1 season as "great" for byu per your list and exclude 1994 for Utah.

Thanks for the leg work on that though. I see another "great" year in the making for the Utes and another "bad" year for byu with six or more losses.

Go Utes, take it to the frogs!

    Utah Ute Fan 62

You are wondering where they might pick up those three "losses" (plural of loss)?

Well, I'm guessing if you look at the "remaining" schedule, you can guess it will be at TCU, SDSU, ND, and/or BYU.

TCU is better. SDSU could be the better team. Playing at ND, with ND hungry could be difficult for the U, and I never try to predict who will win the rivalry game.

An untested U could lose any and all these games. See, the cool thing about history, is you sorta have to wait for it to happen.

So I won't try to pick which three.

I do think that Utah does find ways to win games they should lose, so I do think they will win one out of their last four.

I'll live in lala land, while you live in the reality of Utah's NC year... Mmmmm K?

Even more telling that even during Utah's glory years, BYU is still outpacing the Utes in every significant category except BCS appearances.

Another great year in the works for Utah this year could quickly turn to mediocrity next season; and visa versa for BYU - see Texas 2009 and 2010; and Alabama 2007 and 2008.

Programs, like seasons, are judged by a body of work, not one season or one game.

With 1 loss, there is no chance for Utah (or TCU for that matter) to make BCS game.

Utah wins and may be ranked 3rd since I don't think either #1 Oregon or #2 Auburn will lose. With a win over TCU, Utah will be able to jump over #4 BSU.
