One game at a time. This BYU team isn't good enough to look past anybody. Just
focus on winning this Saturday and potential bowls will take care of themselves.
What if! BYU wins it's next 4 games finishes 7-5 and tied for second in the MWC
with a win over it's tie mate, Utah, provided the Utes lose to TCU. HMMMM,
stranger things have happened!
0% chance tds goes bowling. They'll drop one of the next 3 before
losing by 30 in the beatdown provided courtesty big brother.National
Champ for UtahNo Bowl for byu.Tough choice for future
Insignificant... in comparison to the Ute game, that's an honest statement.I'll be watching both games. I hope that the Cougars can continue to
improve over these next games and that all cylinders will be firing by the time
the Utah / BYU meet at the end of the month.Go Cougars!
Xpat, im sorry but you and the rest of Cougar nation need to realize that:the cougs are carried away. Pathetic outing on the season to date..Most other schools would consider giving Bronco the 86..I think you should
too...Bowling for BYU is a pipe dream. The TDS has not played in a bowl
game that meant anything since the 1996 Cotton Bowl Triumph over K-State. (14
years, 0 BCS games) Cougar fans should be focused on the womens
soccer team. Best program on campus.(By Far!!!) Legit NCAA tournament team.
Oh wow BYU going to a bowl game would be such a relief this year. I hope the
offense can kick it into gear...hope...
"Then again, the beggars/choosers relationship is well-established, and BYU is
currently a postseason panhandler." Good stuff from Wrubell. We'll
find out soon if this years edition of Cougar football has it in them to go to a
bowl game. I'm curious to see if there's any O improvement after the bye week.
Colorado St on the Road will pose the biggest problem but nothing can be taken
for granted. This team has shown that they are capable of losing to any team.
The Utah St game looms large now looking back on the season. After the last four
years it is a bitter pill, never thought we would need to worry about UNLV,
Colorado St and New Mexico. A bowl game would be a good finish to what has been
a very disappointing season. It is good to see the defense back in Broncos
control and planning better, now if the offense and Heaps would show any type of
improvement it would be a plus.
Winning the next 3 games is extremely possible and will make the Utah matchup
fun to watch. As a Ute I am routing for my Cougar brothers for the next three
weeks. Go Cougs!
I don't think it can be overstated how badly this team needs to make a bowl
game. I don't care if it is in New Mexico. This season is one long spring camp
in preparation for 2011 and this very young team needs that extra month of
practice like no other.
BYU should beat New Mexico and UNLV. THe trap game in my opinion is Colorado
State. Out of the next 3 that one is the toughest. They should win though. A
bowl game would be grat for this team even if they ended up playin the 5th pac
10 team this year. My prediction when looking at the schedule to start the
season was a 6-6 season. I think the young players really need a bowl and Heaps
needs it more than any other player on the team
I don't know if anyone can comment on this, but I believe there is a new rule
that teams with 7 or more wins are supposed to be considered before 6 win teams.
That might make it a little more difficult for BYU to be chosen over Air Force
who are likely to finish with a record of 9 and 3.
Greg, good stuff. Love your insight. Yes, the nation will be watching what's
going on in SLC, but interesting how teh "comparitively insignificant game" down
south will dwarf the other game in attendance! Need we say any more about the
sorry state of the MWC when a school wins-out and gets a BCS berth and a 1-loss
team settles for the all-impressive ..... Las Vegas Bowl? Great conf. champ bowl
to hang your hat on, MWC!!! Candidly, I could care less the bowl game our Cougs
go to, as long as they get there-- which I think they will .... by the skin of
their teeth! Go mighty Cougs!!
If BYU is not preparing to WIN the next FOUR regular season games, just call it
off now. Utah is looking great right now, but the rivalry game between the
Cougars and Utes is never a gimmee. Sure the next three games should be
winnable, but so should the one on Nov. 27. Where's the emotion??
Colorado State and Utah will be tough games. With how BYU has been playing,
UNLV and NM will likely be close and tough as well. I still have hope for the
Cougs to go bowling. I don't care where they go - another game is another game.
New Mexico, San Diego, and Vegas all look good in HD.
Come on with this Fire Bronco garbage. I love Utah but whoever thinks Bronco
needs to go is up in the night. Look at what happened to Coach Witt in 2007.
Had a really hard year losing to UNLV 27-0. Coaches just like players learn and
grow even mature. We all know how 2008 turned out for Utah. BYU will get back
on their feet, there is more to life than football not much but there is more.
Let me paint you a picture....Utes take a tough loss to a far
superior TCU team... 35 - 10 ouch.Meanwhile, BYU scrapes out some
wins and ends up even beating Utah 24 - 21!All of the sudden, BYU is
tied for 2nd in the MWC. BYU gets invited to Vegas, for the
billionth time in a row, and the Utes go to the same bowl they went to last
year.I think I like the look of that picture... a lot.Gooooooo Cougars!
Maybe we'll be better off staying home this bowl season. The extra practice
afforded by a bowl game is attractive. Good luck to the hoots against the frogs.
A TCU win might get a title shot, but no gimme here.
I have no interest in seeing BYU play in a bowl game this year, unless they
intend to win it. We're seeing that kind of desire from the defense, but the
offense still doesn't look like they even care. If they don't care, neither do
BYU won't be playing in a bowl game this year unless they intend to win it.The only bowl I've seen the Cougars take lightly was 2008, when BYU
seemed disinterested throughout the game in losing to an Arizona team that was
very excited to be playing in their first bowl in about 10 years.Against Cal, Oregon, UCLA, and Oregon State, the Cougars played with heart and
intensity. This year will be no different.
How irrelevant the Cougars have become. All the talk leading up to the season
was Heaps was going to save the team, independence was going to propell the team
forward.....and on, and on, and on. Now, Utah is garnering all of the national
media due to the play on the field, PAC12 acceptance, MWC player of the week
awards, etc. Who cares what bowl game, if any, BYU goes to? Even
the fans have lost interest (who are the bandwagon fans now?) and the biggest
news is that BYU STILL hasn't played in a BCS game and thier chances aren't
improving anytime soon.
A bowl game would be a nice celebration for this team, but they probably will
not qualify. Never have understood how people think bowl games mean anything,
but something to do for people over the holidays. While the BCS toots "national
championship", remember there is no such thing in the Bowl Championship Division
of the NCAA. Another interesting thing is that in spite of the lowly BYU
record and meaningless game with UNLV more state of Utah fans will watch it and
be concerned about it, than all of the media hyped drama taking place at RES
Cosmo-You are Begging!?!?!
Don't trouble your little heart about BYU's current or future relevance
ute4ever.This is simply a rebuilding year for BYU, a team that has
been a perennial Top 25 team for over 30 years.Every team goes
through up and down years. Last year's #2 team, Texas, is currently
4-4 and also in jeopardy of not qualifying for a bowl. The Longhorns have lost
to UCLA, Baylor, and Iowa State at home. Yes, the same Iowa State team that Utah
blew out in Ames.BYU is simply experiencing a refiner's fire that
will help to forge an even stronger program.
"BYU is simply experiencing a refiner's fire that will help to forge an even
stronger program."Lonestar,Wow! some of the finest
blue kool-aid dogma I've read in days.....are you employeed by the DNews?
Cougar fans--don't be such cowards. This season is'nt over and can still have a
good ending. I still feel the cougs can win their last two games. Yes! Utah and
a bowl game. The Utes are going to get their bell rung the next three weeks and
the cougs could be salt in their wounds. Lets play it out.
Forget bowl talk for awhile! This is not a good or well coached team. They may
be done after thanksgiving.
You've just been drinking too much of the red koolaid hedgy.Utah's
rebuilding season(s) will be here sooner than you think. Hopefully you'll
survive. With Utah basketball already in the tank and little chance of improving
soon, football is the last hope you have to cling to.
Awh, some of you BYU fans are so silly. You actually think you have chance
against Utah. One can always dream I guess. The rest of your games you do stand
a good chance of winning which would lead to a respectable record given where
WOW!!! Here we go with the "we can go 10-0 talk" again.I'm sorry but
this is the same team that just barely beat a HORRIBLE Wyoming team at home! Not
to mention with a little help from the officials even. Byu will lose
to CSU on the road and will get crushed at RES..Period!No bowl and
call the year a "down" year.
WOW. Way to dig deep for a story. It will be this type of creativity needed
next year when PAC 12 after PAC 12 school visits Utah while WAC after WAC school
Cosmo @ Springville, UT: "Let me paint you a picture.... Utes take a tough loss
to a far superior TCU team... 35 - 10 ouch. Meanwhile, BYU scrapes out some wins
and ends up even beating Utah 24 - 21!"As a fellow Cougs fan, I'm
with you for the first score; however, as a more "realistic" Cougs fan, I don't
think there's any chance of a Y victory aginst the dreaded Utes-- as much as it
hurts me to say that. Let's get our 3 straight victories, become bowl eligible
(by the skin of our teeth!) and enjoy whatever bowl they go to. Let's chalk this
season up to a "learning experience" and hope for a stronger Cougs team in 2011.
"It will be this type of creativity needed next year when PAC 12 after PAC 12
school visits Utah while WAC after WAC school visits Provo."Yes, it
will be interesting to see the creativity needed next year by Utah fans in
trying to explain away Utah losing to PAC 12 after PAC 12 school while BYU is
beating up on WAC and WAC school.Especially after the cupcake
schedule Utah played this year to get to #6 in the polls.
It's amazing how delusional UTAH fans have become. Many of them have been
talking national championship since the first game of the season. Remember
BYU's "Quest" hypocrites? It's okay to put it in writing on comment boards -
just not t-shirts.Something to keep in mind - You've now
played one good team the entire season.Air Force proved they were
the better team but since they gave Utah 5 gifts - Utah was able to squeak by
with a very ugly win. It was fun to watch Wittingham wet his pants frequently
on the sideline. You'll never do what BYU did in 84 Utah fans so
remember your BCS victories as meaningless as they are since that's as close as
you get to a national title.TCU will kick your butts all over the
field on Saturday. Then the delusional talk will end.
Here's a Ute fan hoping BYU wins their next three games and goes to the
Independence Bowl(just for the irony).
Silly Utes! Why do you even care?
Heck, at this point I'd be grateful to get to ANY bowl.A bowl win
would be icing on the cake.GO COUGARS!
Ute fans, I competed for four years at BYU, I had alot of respect for most of
the Utes I competed against. I still have a lot of respect for them.Utes4life, Hedgy and Bass whatever, here is my question. READ WELL.IF YOU REALLY CARE ABOUT UTAH SO MUCH, THEN WHY DO YOU COMMENT 3-1 ON BYU
ARTICLE'S?you three are the reason why it is so easy to start to
dislike U of U. Yeah their athletes, cussed me out, spit on me, and threw items
at my team and I, but you know what I never cared too much, they were young kids
and most have apologized after. Maybe they were so mad because we beat them 8-0
in my time, not sure.I can understand why they continued to pick on
us when we obliterated them year in and year out, but now your team is winning,
why rub it in the face of your rivals? I distinctly remember traveling to SLC
my senior year to cheer on or direct rivals, I guess you three want none of that
sportsmanship. Well we will still give it, even if you three dont deserve it
What a waste of time, paper and compute screen...there's only one game anyone
cares about and that's Utah v TCU. Byu is a has-been and will be for years to
84NatChamps | 1:20 p.m. Nov. 2, 2010 Do you know what the score was
in the Utah / BYU game in 1984? Do you?? BYU was ranked #3 and Utah was no
where to be found in the rankings. The final score was BYU 24 Utah 14. Not
much of a performance from a #3 ranked team. What AFA did last
Saturday was not unexpected. Utah prevailed...that's all they needed to do.
Btw...the five takeaways by Utah is very impressive. Reminded me of the 2008
game against BYU.
"there's only one game anyone cares about and that's Utah v TCU"Which is why, of course, you not only decided to read an article about BYU's
prospects, but to take the time to comment on the article.lolThe BYU-obsessed haters who pretend to be Utah fans are hillarious. With the biggest game in RES history less than four days away, the faux
Utah fans still can't control their BYU-obsession long enough to pretend to be
focused on the Utah-TCU game.Guaranteed.Even if Utah
does somehow pull off an upset on Saturday, at least one of the first 10
comments from Utah fans will mention or be directed towards BYU.
Every time a utah fan posts on a BYU article it only reinforces little brother
syndrome. If BYU is irrelevant as many of you are saying why keep posting? The
fact that you took the time out of your day to read a BYU article and then post
a comment speaks volumes as to inferiority complex still held by many u fans.
Even in a down year BYU still gets more attention by utah fans than there own
team. Most u fans on this site really are just Y haters.
Utah was 6-4 and playing at home when BYU played them in 1984. The 24-14 win on
the road over their archrival was enough to propel BYU to #1 in the polls.Fortunately for Utah, none of Utah's best teams have had to play in
Provo.Utah's 21st ranked 2003 team (10-2) barely beat BYU (4-8) 3-0
in Provo.Utah's best teams, 1994, 2004, 2008, and possibly 2010, all
got to play the Cougars in SLC.Utah doesn't play well against good
teams on the road. If this game was being played in Fort Worth, the Utes
wouldn't stand a chance.
Even IF the Cougars were to be bowl eligible, I'm not sure I would want to watch
yet another game featuring a slow, boring, Robert Anae run offense. This is not
Man, I love both bYU and Utah football, but you Utah fans are about the largest
group of hypocrites ever ammassed. You complain for years that BYU
fans are arrogant, and then they have a bad year, all the beatdowns they have
give you are gone...Fire Bronco? That would be stupid.Archie brings up the 84 BYU victory was only by 10, yet the arrogant Utah fans
are thinking all they need to do is beat TCU, then take the year off.I wouldn't put it past BYU to go to a bowl, and a win over Utah would not
surprise me.Personally, I'd choose to see Utah in an NC Championship
game, but I think there is a better chance of NavalVet posting without using the
word "zoob" than that occurring. Utah just forgot to put together a SOS this
year.So put your Utah dreams on hold, grab a Utah article to read,
just win them one at a time, and don't be looking too far past any team.I haven't see Utah look good against a tough team this year yet.
Whoa Nelly. I just discovered an amazing piece of information.BYU
beat SDSU.SDSU beat Airforce.Airforce beat Navy.Navy beat
Notre Dame. So, if Notre Dame beats Utah, and Utah wins out, and
Oregon and Auburn fall,BYU will win the National Championship!I'm thinking I can make some money on this.
To quote Coach Mora of the Indy Colts: Playoffs? Playoffs? Are you kiddin'
me, Playoffs?I root for the Cougs, but stick a fork in them this
No way byu loses any of the next three games.
So is going to the New Mexico Bowl to play Fresno State a good thing?
And the funniest thing about all this is that even with such a great year, all
the Ute fans can do is worry about what's going on with BYU.
Even in a bad year a BYU article talking about a game against UNLV and possible
bowl hopes is going to get more comments and readers on it than an article about
the biggest mid-season matchup Utah has ever faced. What does that tell anyone
about relevence. BYU is always relevent even when they are bad.
Would they really deserve a bowl game? The following teams on BYU
schedule have 2 or less wins:WyomingNew MexicoUNLVUtah
State (and byu got killed in this game)3 WinsColorado
State (but 2 of those victories are over UNLV and New Mexico)WashingtonBYU did beat SDSU, but come on BYU got killed by USU.Several other teams will end up with 6 wins, but they'll have played a lot
tougher teams. BYU doesn't deserve to go bowling.
Mt Olympus, you live in, oh yeah Salt lake area, hmmm you would vote against
the... Cougars. Ok I got it!!!A win is a win, right, RIGHT! A six
win season goes bowling, period. So keep doggin BYU, don't you have
a big game this weekend you should be excited about???I know it is a
long shot, but how awesome would it be to take down the TUN. That would just be
too good, to knock the off this year! I doubt it but we have all seen stranger.
Mount Olympus please summarize Utah's wins over D1 schools. Well since you are
too lazy I will. I wouldn't call the Utes world beaters either.Pitt
3-3UNLV 1-7UNM 0-8San Jose 0-8ISU 4-4Wyo 1-7CSU 3-6AFA 4-4
Unbiased. Good job. That means Utah has played teams that have a
combined record of 16 - 47.That means BYU has played teams that have
a combined record of 34 - 25.Wow. Maybe those UTE fans ought to
talk some more.
Bottom line though about the schedule is BYU has beat one team with a winning
record and lost to all the other teams they have played with a winning record.
They lost to a team that has won two games.Utah has actually beat
both teams it has played with a winning record and everyone else--good, bad or
ugly.Besides TCU (which remains to be seen), Utah beats everyone on
BYU's schedule. Seven of the teams on each's schedule will be
common opponents. They will play each on the last game of the season. It will
be decided by then. Then Utah fans can say they have won two of the last three
or something insipid like that. If TCU does beat the U to me that
doesn't change the fact that Utah is a good team. Losing to TCU isn't the most
awful thing in the world. TCU is the favorite, they are the ones ranked #4.
But certainly the Utes can validate themselves with a big victory. Wins over
TCU, SDSU, ND and BYU, four teams that may all be .500 or better may lead to BCS
I would love to see us win out but let's get real, unless the offense comes to
play that is not likely. Beating Utah, could happen, we have seen underdogs win
all year (USU), but not likely either. Bowl games are fun and I
hope we get one but even if we do, BYU has always used these as a reward for the
team and family members. So it doesn't matter much which one we go to.
However, don't forget who will be pulling for us to get as good a game as
possible--ESPN. They call most of the shots and would love to have us in a
decent game if for no other reason than the following year when they have to
broadcast those 4 games or more.BYU always means ratings for ESPN
and that's the way it is!! Go Cougars finish strong and have fun doing it and
maybe the Utes will be humbled.
An irrelevant story about BYU and look at the 'bitter and jealous' Ute fans. And I have tcom2001 apologizing to the Ute nation for my benign posts.
Thanks tcom2001, I know you got 'my back'.TCU by 14 and the Utes go
to Vegas. That's funny and very possible.
I think it's fairly certain that BYU won't be bowling this year, unless it's at
the wilkinson center.
As painful as this year has been, a real fan sticks with his team. Bitter Yoot
trolls will remain trolls regardless of whether BYU rebounds over the next few
years or not. The Utah fan base is the ultimate bandwagon crowd. You all think
you're Alabama or something. I can't wait to watch the lemmings leap after the
next sub-.500 season. You don't think it'll ever happen? Man, will I laugh and
laugh.As for this year's Y vs. U matchup, all I can say is y'all
better win, and win big. The pressure's off the Y, as it's assumed they will go
down. They probably will, but if they don't . . man, will I laugh and laugh.
What would the trolls possibly say?
A Cougar win on November 27 in Salt Lake City would trump any bowl that BYU
could manage this year!! Let's go for both!!
BYU and bowl game this year ? c'mon.... this is a wash year, and they'll
probably be awesome next year and back in the form where this discussion about
bowl games makes sense. :)
So basically, SDSU caught a break when the officials on the field missed the
facemask that caused the fumble and now they're whining about not being able to
capitalize on the break because the replay officials missed a call on the
fumble. The officials totally blew it, but ultimately got the call
"...their nationwide fan base notwithstanding."It seems Greg
continues the Cougar tradition of perpetuating the myth of a national fan
base.A couple of facts:In the 38 states east of Colorado
there are about 1.6 million Mormons. A generous guess would be that 50% of
those Mormons are BYU fans. Those 800,000 BYU fans are dispersed
among 38 states, for an average of about 21,000 fans per state. The
bottom line is that BYU may have a broadly dispersed fan base, but it is
certainly not a meaningful national fan base by any measure. But the
facts won't stop Cougars from perpetuating the myth.
Bowl? How about just get another win.
Mr Wrubell -- BYU STARTED the year as a rebuild year: freshmen in all skill
positions and a depleted Defense. Where were everyone's expectations in
September?? I personally don't want BYU in a bowl (futile to talk about anyway
at this point). As for Utah, I can't wait for them to play real
teams week after week in the PAC. They will never be in the Rose Bowl. It is
interesting to note how few comments they make on their own team's articles in
this paper, and how even fewer call in to their radio stations after a big game.
45k seat stadium for a "national powerhouse"?? RE firing Bronco -
who would BYU get that would be any better? Realistically.
@eagle 6:29 You asked - "So is going to the New Mexico Bowl to play
Fresno State a good thing?"As a Cougar fan, I appreciate this
question, because it's a fair one. Personally, I think any bowl game
for BYU this year is definitely a good thing, especially as they move out of the
Mountain West Conference.
