Mr. Nelson - I no longer live in Utah but I follow the events happening there
through various media including the Dseret News. Your letter indicates that you
have seen nothing untoward in the persoinality or personal conduct of Goverbnor
Herbet. I'm certain you are correct in your assessment. But your insinuation
that out-of-state construction projects are somehow inefficient simply because
your observations seems to point to an inefficient work process is troubling.
Add to that your dismissal of those who are seemingly still waiting for a
credible answer to question "Why was a losing bidder on the highway project paid
$13 million?" and I wonder what the value of your assessment is as it relates to
the governor's fitness for office. Until the question is respectfully and
honestly answered, the issue remains important.
The letter writer said "I have never known of even one issue where I suspected
he was being anything less than honorable." The letter writer needs to open his
eyes, and see exactly what Herbert has done. If the letter writer is an
honorable person, he will then change his opinion.
Members of the church are told to avoid even the appearance of evil. Herbert's
whole argument has been that it only looks bad.
Since when is being a nice neighbor evidence of being honorable?Since when does the State of Utah pay millions in hush-money to disgruntled
losing bidders on state contracts?Since when is it OK for a governor
to say, "A $13 million payoff? I just didn't know anything about it."This is beyond ridiculous.
42istheanswer,It only appears evil if you WANT it to appear evil. His political opposition WANTS people to think it's evil (sans audit).
Why didn't Corroon ask for an audit earlier so we have results
before_the_election? Too slow for being used for political_advantage?You may be shocked but stuff like this happens sometimes.
UDOT has to write_checks to keep projects moving sometimes. It
costs more to put projects on hold while the case plays out in court (the
Legacy_Highway and the Mitchel trial are examples of how long cases can be drawn
out in court).UDOT runs into natural and man_made obstructions when
doing their massive projects, and it sometimes takes money to remove obstruction
so they can proceed. Be it a huge boulder where the road needs to be, or homes
too close to the road, noise_issues, or law_suits... they sometimes have to
write_checks to remove the obstacle. They would have
spent more on lawyers, delays (they must pay the winning contractor to put his
people and equipment on hold), and higher construction costs, if they decide to
take the court route.Sans investigation results... its ony evil if
you WANT it to look evil.
Raising money by working a list of State vendors and bidders is honorable? Well
OK we live in a world of grey, how about "questionable"? If so why is bringing
it up negative campaigning?
"Honorable?" That does not a good Governor make, by itself, even if it were
true.I want an well educated and worldly man at the helm of our
state.Mr. Corroon has 3 degrees, including in real estate finance
and law. He understands how the big business of the real world works.Mr. Herbert "attended BYU".Make your own choice.
Grover | 9:30 a.m. In my mind... it isn't negative campaigning to
bring stuff like the UDOT payment up. The ABSOLUTLY LOONY and
NEGATIVE bunk is... the leap of logic Corroon's commercial made to... "Herbert
wants to hurt your CHILDREN most"... "Herbert wants to TAKE from your children
to take care of his rich friends"... etc. That money in the
UDOT bugdet had ZERO possibility of being used for Education!!! Whether UDOT
paid it to a contractor or not! Do you get that? That's the
misleading and INTENTIONALLY false assumption this commercial is intended to
give viewers/voters.THAT is the negative and mis-information part of
the Corroon comercial I object to.
Question, while the $13 million does definately appear bad, it is more Herbert's
propensity of taking money from state vendors etc. & their magically having
obstacles removed. But if $13 million in hush money, & taking hundreds of
thousands of dollars from people who conduct questionable business with the
state doesn't at least appear evil, I'm not certain anything will to his
Since you're his bishop, we'll take you at his work that Gov. Herbert is
honorable. I have broken bread with the man and agree: he's an honorable man.
(So's Corroon.)However, the accusation regarding the $13 million
payout isn't regarding Herbert's honor. If Herbert knew about it, which he
claims not to have known, it might. The fact that he didn't know
indicates ineptness, not dishonor.
Question: I get it that funds dedicated to one State budget doesn't usually end
up in the budget of another department AND I get it that Corroon is not an ideal
candidate in that he is running stupid ads. Now do you get it that there is
something very wrong about a politician who thinks it is business as usual to
solicit large contributions from those doing business or hoping to do business
with the State?
He may be honorable (I don't really believe that though) but he's not a capable
governor. We need Corroon.
The $13 million pay off is a sign that the solicitation process was somewhat
flawed or else could have been legally challenged. If anything, what have we
learned from this ordeal? Has the Governor's office or DOT taken positive steps
to insure that this will not happen again? I sense the Governor is spending too
much time to convince us that he was not part of the transaction but is he in
fact part of a future solution? Where we go from here? Sounds like he is
playing defensive politics.
Great. A letter from his bishop. How can we trust THAT?
Here's MY OUTSIDER view. He's being less than honorable. Herbert is
NOT honorable - been much controversy and many questions asked concerning the
awarding of the Utah County I-15 road construction bid - fire him - we are
tired of RINO GOP's that are interested in money, greed, corruption, above the
law, (ignore us common people unless they need your votes), career politician's
who will take money from any special interest and say or do anything to keep his
hold on power. It's secret government by the insiders, for the insiders only
today. That's for BIG BUSINESS "ONLY" and their deep pocket's. Like it or not, it's the truth.
