Teaching children about the documented dangers of tobacco addition is fine.
Teaching them that Utah is bad because of "low" cigarette taxes is wrong, and is
nothing more than child indoctrination. It's time that the government
gets out of legislating against what they perceive as wrong by raising taxes.
This includes tobacco and alcohol products.
Why should tobacco even be allowed? I understand freedom of choice, but why
should we subsidize the healthcare of people who are committing slow suicide?
Healthcare costs from tobacco run in the billions. Lost work time
due to bad health, billions more. Is it because those who die early save us
Social Security dollars, or merely because the tobacco lobby puts $$ in the
pockets of politicians?Tony Gwynn, Hall of Fame baseball player was
recently diagnosed with cancer of the salivary glands. At least twice before
he'd had benign tumors removed, but still kept dipping snuff. Did he really
have freedom of choice? The vast majority of smokers start using
before they are old enough to be allowed to drive or vote because we don't deem
them mature enough to make those choices. Why do we allow tobacco?
The article contradicts itself in the number of annual deaths in the U.S. caused
by tobacco. One number is 1,200. Another is over 440,000. Should the article
report that the lower number is for Utah alone?
