Playing the Panthers in the Fiesta Bowl -- GREAT!

Playing the #3-ranked Pitt on the road in the first ever nationally televised college football game on ESPN -- PRICELESS!

This could be a big year. KW needs to keep the team focused and pound Pitt like they did in 2005. It's not just about winning, Utah needs to come out a send a message.

TCU, Boise, and BYU can also send a powerful message in week one to the BcS cartel.

I am looking forward to seeing how KW has built his defence this year.

    Go Utes!!!

A "wynn" at home vs 15th-ranked Pitts is obviously very important for Utah to start the season.
    Utes can do it!!!

    @BYU84
That is the same team Pitt team that went 3-7. BYU did do what only 5 other teams were able to do that year - beat Michigan. Don't forget, BYU didn't win the national championship, they were awarded it.

    BYU84,

Unable to accept that- the Panthers offense scored 178 points while the defense allowed 247 points for the season. At season’s end, the Panthers were not ranked in the National Polls. The Panthers had their first losing season since 1972 - DELUSIONAL!

I remember drones of BYU fans putting on their Utah gear and making the trip down to Tempe. In a way, that showed really good instincts from Cougar fans. They apparently knew that tagging along with the Utes to a BCS game would be their only opportunity to ever experience one.

Props to the Cougar fans who had the forsight to see their own mediocrity five years ago.

It's time to get back into the hottub time machine and get back to this century. When you get back, you will realize that Utah is going to the PAC and byu has gone to the WCC. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH

    I know it's scary and it's not a nightmare, it's reality.

You might want to worry about USU in Logan though.

bob? You heard of the West Coast Conference? Gonzaga...St Mary's? I know, the rumors change every day, it's hard to keep up.

The West Coast Conference along with "Idependence" in football would actually be a pretty good move for byu if they could schedule enough games. I'm sure Holmoe won't get that done though. So it would be more like Utah in the PAC and byu playing 5 or 6 WAC teams each year. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I am so glad the Utes can focus on Pitt this week!

Why do people make the comment that Pitt fell out of the polls the year they played BYU. Can BYU control how they play the remainder of their games?

When U go out and beat Pitt on Thu, and if they stink the rest of the way, not much you can do. You beat'em when they were ranked, that's all that can be asked.

Too bad the U can't get the 2005 team to come back....
    Pitt will dominate U
    Utah-10
    Pitt-35

Agree with the poster above...BYU did not win the NC in 1984, it was given to Lavell for his achievments at BYU in the previous decade...
1984 BYU team did not play any impressive teams that year.

    @williary

The BYU fans I know do cheer on the Utes. You represent our state and (at least one more year) our conference. We also cheer on the other Utah schools and the other MWC schools. The fact that you can't wrap your head around that speaks volumes about you.

    Can't wait for Thursday!

I'm looking forward to not only a great season, but the last time competing in the MWC!!

Keep those bitter comments coming coog fans - your jealous tears taste so sweet.

    Go Utes!!!

"Why do people make the comment that Pitt fell out of the polls the year they played BYU. Can BYU control how they play the remainder of their games?
    "

Because you claim it as beating a top five team, when in reality, you beat a poor team.
Its good to say, "we beat this team who FINISHED the year ranked #7."

Thats why the 08 utes were more impressive than the 84 cougars IMO. The utes beat two teams who FINISHED in the top 10, not preseason top 10. Clearly, Pitt was not a top 10 team that year and yet BYU fans claim it as such.

Oh well, whatever makes you feel good. I personally dont care.

@Big_Ben, in ether case, neither organization can control the performance of our opponents. All you can do is beat the teams that you line up and play against. Rankings have always been a popularity contest. Best of luck on Thu.

    re: fresnogirl

You, and apparently every BYU fan you know, are truly an annomally. If you need evidence of that just click through recent Utah/BYU articles on this website and read the comments section.

That fact that you live in a world of rainbows and unicorns where everyone skips together holding hands speaks volumes about you. Step into reality. This isn't little league.

I am with fresnogirl in cheering for fellow conference and, in particular, in-state schools.

Fortunately, the real world isn't zero-sum (you need to lose for me to win). It may not be all rainbows and unicorns, but it is Utes, Cougars, Horned Frogs, Falcons, Rams, Lobos, Aztecs, Rebels, and Cowboys.

I suppose that discounts the 2004 BCS win then since Pitt dropped out of the coaches poll and barely hung onto be ranked 25th in AP.

  • moodyblue77
    Aug. 31, 2010 5:08 p.m.

There is no need to discount anybody's great performances or the circumstances that fell into place for them.

Is there anybody out who was not cheering for the Utes in the unbelievable 1st quarter against Alabama?

Was everybody sitting on their hands when the Oklahoma field goal missed?

Didn't we all cheer the hook and lateral by Boise State against Oklahoma?

If you've lived in the WAC or the MWC or both for very long, you live for these moments. Isn't it great that our good teams take it out on the national bullies?

    What a great decade!

Just my luck, I move from Pittsburgh back to SLC and the first Utes game is against Pitt. The football gods are funny. I would be lying if I said Pitt doesnt worry me, they have an awesome RB. I have heard our front 4 on D will be something special this year. I cant wait to see us stuff Pitt's running game. Hey Picksey, yinz are going down n@! That's Pittsburgh speak for all the Utahns.
