Tuckett is wrong about the MWC becoming an automatic qualifier for the BCS. It wouldn't have happened even with Utah. The bad teams (especially New Mexico) have just been too bad. Things don't change by adding a bad USU team. You have to have teams that can win some nonconference games against the big boys before you become part of the BCS-buster talk.

College sports has become an unsavory business. So much for "student-athletes." Drop the pretense and pay them. Right now they are being used and abused by the schools.

RE: sls I have to disagree, I think if the Y stays in the MWC and the 'new big 3' keeps performing, they get AQ status. I don't think they necessarily qualify in every tier, but I think they'll be close enough that they'll get in with a waiver request. I think the powers that be in the BCS would welcome the MWC with open arms as a way to deflect future bad press about the system.

Consider that by 2012, every team that has legitimately threatened the BCS except one (Hawaii) will be A. in a BCS conference (Utah) or B. part of the MWC. Remember BCS officials are in the business of perpetuating the system at all costs and the above schools have been the 'case in point' against the system for years. Inclusion of the MWC strengthens thier strangle hold on college athletics.

    Interesting article.
    Interesting comments from Tuckett.

The real issue or “pink elephant” in the room is BYU’s inability to culturally assimilate within the national fiber. All the tds problems would simply wash away IF they didn’t get such low marks in “plays well with others”. I don’t believe the LDS church will ever make the necessary changes and thus the plight of the tds will for ever and always be uphill.

He seems like he really has a good grasp of the situation.

BYU currently is not able to create an attractive football schedule once it hits conference games.

Mr. Tuckett is knowledgable but is out of the loop. MWC will never be an AQ conference, money rules the roost and ethics have taken a backseat so there's no way BCS will share unless forced to.

BYU is distinct and needs to remain so. Being "culturally assimilated" just to please those with different values is the cheap way to recognition. Hang in there BYU and don't become just another state college (tun).

Glen Tuckett did a great job at BYU. A very steady influence in the old WAC.

Getting AQC status for the MWC does not solve the underlying problem of TV revenue because all that BCS bowl game money has to be shared with every team in the conference plus all the other non BCS teams. After all is said and done the BCS bowl game money barely covers the expenses of the team that goes to the game. Ask Utah. Ask TCU.

Live hard, you are assuming that BYU never approached the MWC about their concerns and a desire to adjust the contract.
Nice religious shot but you just did the same thing you accuse them of, lashing out at someone without knowing the facts or giving them a chance to address them for you. Funny.

I feel the same way as Seattleview---my comments get blocked as well. I am sure BYU will not stay in the MWC for the amount of flack the school has taken from such lower tier schools in attendance at ball games.......This is an outcry. BYU come out of this with some wit--------don't continue to spend lots of money with the MWC---let.s have our own league and TV contracts........Go Cougs.

...been reading a lot of columns and stories about BYU's athletic direction (or lack thereof or lack of actual information thereon)...interested in the outcome but eyes are glazing over...feeling guilty about the wasted time...yawn...out
