Tom took time out during education week? What is Tom an educator or just the
mastermind behind BYU's numerous Vegas bowl appearances? OK maybe he is both but
look BYU your national profile isn't going to change too drastically. You may be
in a conference that has IND, WCC, WAC or even MWC but none of these are
affiliated with BCS. Your profile can only be raised as much as the next Elder's
quorum discussion will allow it so while you continue to raise the profile and
do things to bring the Y to prominence and put those around you down, in reality
your rise to prominence is nothing more than Vegas Bowl greatness. I may have
mentioned that a time machine is the only real thing that will bring a "raised
profile" to BYU, and that is only if it can be set to 84'.Again this
whole thing is really quite silly, universities tossing integrity out the window
because they want to raise profiles and better their student athletes . . . wow
it is getting deep in here.Meanwhile BCS is raising their profile
and gaining prominence-guess we know who the smart ones are.
I like the WCC for men's basketball! BYU joining the likes of Gonzaga and St.
Mary's would give the conference a potent rpi boost. Why not?
The Big West Conference offers 16 sports that line up well with the sports that
BYU offers. All of the teams are in CA. Perhaps this conference would be a
better fit than the West Coast.
nehu, such cynacism with absolutely zero illumination, other than a bitter mind.
And BCS is gaining prominence? If you mean more and more people discuss it as
cartel, yes it is becoming more prominent.
What BYU looks like is a thwarted jealous child throwing a tantrum over the
success of it's rival.
@nehuOne thing is for certain, nehu, if that's your real name?ESPN would never be interested in cutting an "Individual" deal with the
Utes. Again, your worth hinges on others. As you had with BYU for 40
years.BYU's position is secure and is strong enough to stand alone,
if need be, with those who are in the know. ESPN is negotiating with
BYU as an Independent, no conference coat-tails here. They know the
value of BYU. When Utah had it's greatest win ever, against Alabama,
it was still "BYU", that ESPN contacted, for the Grand Opening of Jerry's World,
not Utah!So save your condescending attitude and know this.... BYU may or may not go Independent, but, they have the "Option" to do on
their own, what Utah can only do as a group. (that is, match dollar for dollar
any money Utah might attain)BYU simply wants to "Own" it's "Brand"
and market it accordingly. This idea of BYU, which draws 65k a game,
has a National following, (yes, we know, they are not Notre Dame), and boosts
attendance by 10-15k at away games, equally splitting revenue withWyomingisRediculous

sure BYU's basketball fans are chomping at the bit to see those teams come to

small pond and forget about playing for a big bowl. isn't that what this is all
about. playing on ESPN and not MTN and not playing in bowl games, not having the
protection from negative exposure when you are bad. How can playing
a few games on ESPN be worth missing out on the exposure of bowl games. The BCS
is not going to make BYU the same deal they did Notre Dame. All the lower tier
bowl games are affiliated with conferences BYU would be iced out of those games.
If you are talking exposure why consider going independent. you loose a lot of
exposure going independent. I will grant you that the MTN contract needs to be
fixed.why is it that every time BYU and its conference is
about to make a big splash it bails. BYU got exposure alright. This week the
current administration from president to AD have exposed themselves as just like
the other guy underhanded, conniving and selfish. Just the image the church
wants. and the next president of BYU and AD are?
Re: T.S.Zarathrustra | 6:28 a.m."What BYU looks like is a
thwarted jealous child throwing a tantrum over the success of it's rival."********************Amen. BYU seems to be willing to
sacrifice their non-football athletes and coaches for a few Thursday night
football games on ESPN.
HOO HOO! Nehu, stop man -- I'm laughing so hard I can't breath! First of all,
why do you care (oh yeah, the BYU obsession thing -- sorry, forgot about that,
li'l bro)? Secondly, tell me again why the utes bolted for the coast? And
PLEASE don't tell me it was for more exposure, higher national profile, to
better their athletes, increase BCS and NC opportunities, or to increase
football revenues, 'cause now any of those answers would REALLY make your
criticisms look hypocritical. You're killin' me, man!
@T.S.Zarathrustra: bitterness is not becoming, my brother. Nothing has been
thwarted and there is no tantrum, merely an ambitious plan to elevate the Y
football program so that more people can see it on TV, while at the same time
raising much more revenue. It sounds like a smart move, but nothing
is set in stone as of yet. Things will work out one way or another. (And there
is no apostrophe in its. Did you forget your punctuation rules already?

I was wondering about the Y's involvement in the discussions between the MWC and
Fresno and Nevada. Thanks to Boise State's Pres., that's cleared up in my mind.
The WAC would be wise to pick up at least Montana from the Big Sky. Their
football program has had national limelight for years.
Dear Ute-dorks,Keep up your childish attitudes...your so-called
acceptance into the PAC10 is going to be your demise. Ask WSU, OSU, ASU, AU how
much notoriety they have enjoyed over the past 30 years? Nobody along the east
coast gives a dang about what goes on, on the left-coast, because most of their
games are on after everyone else has gone to bed. Utah's inclusion into that
so-so league may get you some more cash, but notoriety? Forget it boys, you'll
disappear into oblivion with your 7-5 records that will become the norm. Laugh
all you want about BYU begin stuck in the MWC (for now). Whatever happens
regarding this conference alignment talk, BYU will always be superior to Utah.
It has for the past 40 years when college football grew to prominance, and will
continue to do so from here on. Your 6 years of excitement just doesn't measure
up to BYU's 30 years of notoriety. Great accomplishments concerning Utah's
RECENT run, but that is about to stop. Scoreboards never lie, and will never
change in the future. GOOD LUCK LITTLE RED FACED BOYS, You'll needIT!
Byu is kidding themselves if they think the pastures are greener as a football
independent. They're not Notre Dame as much as they'd like to think they are.
I think the main reason they want to bolt is because they're tired of finishing
3rd in the mountain west all the time.
Seems to me that BYU is reinforcing the Utah County ethics stereotype:* Trying to get out of the TV contract that BYU endorsed and helped establish
(not unprecedented behavior, e.g. not honoring the last year of Crowton's
contract)* Positioning their efforts as something that would help
the WAC yet trying to limit WAC team options so that BYU can achieve it's
end-game* Leveraging USU's honor and goodwill and leaving them
hanging out to dry* Throwing every non-football athlete and coach at
BYU under the bus* Believing their own hype about the potential
upside (just like Utah County pyramid schemes)* Blurring the lines
between business/athletics and religion (implicitly if not explicitly)It's things like this that cause me to wince just a little bit when I sign an
idealistic young person's ecclesiastical endorsement for an application to BYU.
(BYU is a fine institution but I, from an admittedly biased perspective, am not
"fully invested" when it comes to BYU's athletic program.)
re: rvalens2 | 7:14 a.m. Aug. 20, 2010 That would be better quality
basketball than the utes have brought to Provo for quite some time now.
Hey, here's a thought!...Why does'nt BYU just buy their way into these power
conferences?...drop a few million into their greedy pockets, and see who
accepts! After all, isn't all this about money?...If any football program in the
country has the money, it's BYU!
I like the new mwc and hope they add Houston. But if we go it alone in football
and align ourselves with another conference for other sports I'll still be a
Cougar. This may be the only way to gain enough extra revenue to keep up with
BCS teams. If we can go undefeated we get into a BCS bowl, if not, anyplace but
Vegas is a step up. The Utes will also have to go undefeated in their new
league, else they'll most likely not get a bcs bowl game or a chance at a nc
game. Let's hope all is well.
Yo, hedge-your-bets: I see you've posted another terrific, insightful comment!
And, I love your sentence structure! You da man!
u fans...your basketball program is in the dumps and you have only girls gym for
olympic sports. You are football only! My what a powerhouse u are!
Wiley Old SchoolThank you for finally be willing to acknowledge your
own faults-Trying to get out of the TV contract that Utah
endorsed-Positioning Utahs efforts as something that would help the
MWC and then jumping ship ----------------As for your
other points: -BYU didn't hang USU out to dry; FSU and UNR are
solely to blame there-Throwing every non-football BYU athlete and
coach under the bus? hardly, BYU is trying to get back their own brand to be
able to broadcast EVERY BYU athletic team on BYU-TV and provide national
exposure to all-Since when is having confidence in your own self
worth a fault unless you're just a pathetic BYU hater who simply wants to see
BYU fail miserably at every endeavor-There is no blurred line; BYU
has always been very clear about its ultimate mission which includes using
athletics as a means of spreading the WordYou should be fully
invested in BYU's mission, which, supposedly, is exactly the same as yoursDoesn't mean you have to be a BYU fan, but, at the very least, you
should support BYU's goal to represent the church through athletics
All of you ute fans (or others who criticise) are up in the night and you just
don't get it, let me repeat that, you don't get it, that is probably why you are
ute fans. The exposure that BYU wants is partially for the sports
(football) programs but mostly and more importantly it is for exposure to BYU as
an entity of the church and the message of the restored gospel. Go back and read
Harmons article of a few days ago. He hit it right on the head. The reason to go
independent is not so much for sports reasons, it's not money, it is for greater
exposure to the nation (and the world for that matter)about what the church's
goal is, to bring the message of the restored gospel to everyone. The sports
programs of the University are tools and every tool available will be used to
try to get that message into as many homes as possible. The big picture isn't
sports (football), it's the message of the restored gospel. Do you get it yet?
Wo wo why are people assuming I'm a Ute? I can promise a lot of things but being
a Ute is not one of them. So "counter intelligence" and "bluto" if those are
your real names (what was that comment all about) stop making assumptions
because you know what that does.Bluto I still like your "So know
this" comment, what is that supposed to strike fear into my soul? You follow
that up with a new paragraph that isn't even a new sentence, that is weird.
It's an interesting thought. You have people gathered together as a marketing
teams brainstorming on increased brand recognition for BYU.There's
these biblical verses like :"“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is
wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it
are many."Narrowness as been supplanted by many as the metric of a
church's success. There was the Winter Games, Prop 8 and now this?
I've read countless versions of what BYU could do as an indy, all involving
leagues in the West. Why don't we look east toward the Big 12/10 with the same
independent deal that was wanted with the WAC?The only reason Texas
didn't want more in the conference was because they didn't want more mouths to
feed at the TV table. If we join the Big 12/10 for all other sports and bring
our own lunch as an independent in football then we don't take anything away
from TX et al. The hoops and other sports are great, the facilities are big
time, and the exposure is in a BCS environment. Plus, BYU's TV exposure for all
of the smaller sports would boost all of the BIG 12 athletics.
Living in the ND backyard and BIG 10 country, I get a pretty good inside
perspective on the challenges of going the Independent route. Trust me when I
say it’s not if but when ND will be FORCED to join a BCS conference.
Rumors are flying that the BIG 10 will create an embargo of sorts by not letting
current and future members play ND — unless they join. Currently ND has had the luxury of having 3-4 BIG 10 opponents baked in every
year — drawing off the BIG 10 tit will end. The option of ND switching
out Michigan (and other big market programs) for BYU is unacceptable. Also, the
ridiculously rich BIG 10 network just got richer with NEB joining — so the
revenue opps. are just about equal to what ND gets with NBC . The
reality is that the only long term solution is joining a BCS conference and I
just don’t see the BiG 12 inviting BYU - ever.
Dear MichiganCu,We understand the frustrations.We
understand the works that BYU have been trying to keep up with Utah's move to
Pac-12 have been difficult. We understand Cougarettes like yourself must be
eager to wait for news...Keep trying and working it out. I am sure
Holmo and Broco will come up with some thing --perhaps better than WACky and
Dear MichiganKewg,What has so-called "30 years of BYU
notoriety" brought to BYU?Still WACky.Or worse yet, WCC.Pathetic!
There are really only 3 options for BYU in the long run, in order for them to
get the TV coverage needed. 1. The MTN TV contract needs to be
scrapped. BYU has to have the ability to broadcast all of it's sporting events.
Major games like Texas need to have true national coverage by major networks. In
that case BYU could stay in the MTN.2. BYU could go independent.
That has many advantages but some risk. That was a great option until NV and FSU
jumped and gutted the WAC. If independence did not work BYU could rejoin the WAC
and do no worse than BSU has done in the past. IF the WAC can get enough
football teams they are still a viable option. It sounds crazy but
maybe BYU could cut a non football deal with the Big East like ND has? That
helps the Basketball team. Maybe the Big 12 would cut a non football deal? 3. Get into a BCS conference such as the BIG 12 which allows schools to
broadcast their own content. BYU did not build the TV resources for
student training. They are going to use those resources.
SoCalUtahFan,Holmoe (unfortunate name) has no plan B. Why the tds
is not up in arms about his incompetence is beyond me. Holmoe feel asleep
behind the wheel for over 10 years as Utah executed a strategy to further the
Universities interest. Only now, in a knee jerk reaction, does Holmoe bring up
the magical broadcasting machine.Does it not seem odd that BYU
decides to make this ill fated move only weeks after Utah steals all the
limelight. As I’m sure most kewgs no, envy is a sin — and without a
plan B, they shall be punished
@hedge Your comments on ND and the Big 10 are quite relevant. You should make
more contributions like that. I tend to agree with most of what you
said about independence except for one thing. I think the Texas arrangement will
become the norm for the Universities that can pull it off. If they can muscle
the conference they are in they will demand their TV broadcast rights and more
money from the conference based on their TV draw. I suspect FL would
not be able to muscle the SEC but USC could roll the PAC12. It depends on the
balance between the TV draw of the big national teams in the weak teams in each
conference. You get a hybrid between conferences and independence.
You are going to see more of that. The WAC was BYU's back up plan.
That has problems right now. It is possible that the Big 12 might
cut a non football deal with BYU. Scheduling tends to be more flexible in
basketball and baseball. BYU tends to be a power in other minor sports. It may
be good for both BYU and the Big 12.
All of you negative bloggers continue to harp on the same thing. When are you
going to get it. Sports in and of itself is not the reason that BYU is
considering going independent. Utah going to the PAC 10/12 has little or nothing
to do with it. The move to being an independent in football has been in the
works for years, not just since UofU accepted an invitation to the PAC 10.BYU will study things out and make a decision that will be best for the
University and their goals, (not necessarily sports related).
It seems this whole "exposure" thing goes through stages. BYU Football wins a
lot of games but nobody cares because of the competition they play. BYU
schedules impressive opponents and gets steam rollered and their fans and
recruits go away. BYU pulls back on the schedule and the fans and recruits come
back. Now it looks like they are going back to playing impressive teams like
Texas. My guess is that if the fans and recruits are patient this will work.
Whether they will be or not is of course problematic.
I can't believe it... I'm agreeing with hedgehog | 9:50 a.m. Aug. 20, 2010,
twice in the same week.As conferences get bigger, they will play
more games in-conference, i.e., the PAC-10, which leaves I'm also
disagreeing. The option for BYU is the BCS busting, not BYU busting the BCS.
Dear Texas:We currently own a channel on cable/satellite which can

We currently own a channel on cable/satellite which can broadcast

The Big12 will want another conference championship football game, and won't
wait years for it. BYU will be a prime candidate for that hole, and received
validation of that point by getting Texas to come to Provo. Validation by large
schools, especially someone like Texas who has TV aspirations like BYU already
has in place, will lead to the exposure that BYU should have and will thus lead
to advanced opportunities for the school and increased visibility for the
Wanna boost your national profile? Earn it on the field the way Utah has. Quit

recently?????Utah: to be in Pac-12 in 2011. Major AQ conference.BYU: struggling to respond to the Utes moving to Pac-12 but not wanted

No matter how you try to polish the image...a Pinto can't be turned into a

"I'm also disagreeing. The option for BYU is the BCS busting, not BYU
busting the BCS." sportfan,And for what reason(s) would
the BCS “break”? Currently there is no legal
jurisdictions connected to the BCS and has no affiliation to the NCAA. Why would
the “haves” want to share with the “have not’s” ?
As much as it might be unfair, the BCS is not illegal in any shape of
fashion.Unless you can give me a legal reason Y the BCS powers that
be would want to share with “mid majors” I think you’re just
being delusional. Your also being very hypocritical as well, Is it not the case
that BYU is attempting to separate itself from their “mid major”
brethrens? Is it fair to San Jose state that BYU doesn’t have to play
football in the WAC but would get the conference benefits from basketball?
The Utes will also have to go undefeated in their new league, else they'll most
likely not get a bcs bowl game or a chance at a nc gameHow do you
figure? They need only win their PAC 12 division to get into the conference
championship game. They need to win that game to be in the Rose bowl. Neither

Hedgehog: So are you calling ND hypocritical for being independent in FB and
having affiliation with a conference in their other sports?
Lets' see I want to play football , but not with the WAC. Oh, and then we can
play basketball in the WCC against Gonzaga. O.K, then the Big West can
have our girls Cross- Country team. But all of this has been in the
planning stages for several years now, that's why Tom Holmoe has been mute ,
careful not to give away our secret plans. What we really want is the
exposure as a good missionary tool and enter the homes of 60 million people,
even though that number is 4 x the church population..but now we can broadcast
!! Oh goody , goody, the Cougars can play Texas and we'll just let the
other schools from C-USA and the MWC can have their own playoff for the BCS.It's all in the planning. Yeah Cougs, we sure showed them !!
Why is this not seen for what it is? BYU independence is nothing more than as
stopgap solution for then next 2-3 years until the Big 12 decides it would like
to have a conference championship game again. Then BYU can come to the table
with a proven history of being able to schedule big opponents, rake in TV
ratings and revenue dollars on their own and show that they can be a
contributing member of a big time conference and not a leeching one (like every
other member of the current and future MWC and half the current Big 12). That
would be an impressive resume.
@Ibleedcrimson...The Utes will also have to go undefeated in their new
league, else they'll most likely not get a bcs bowl game or a chance at a nc
game...Not when Utah is in Pac-12. Remember USC won NC with a
early-in-the-season loss couple of years back? That is the beauty of being
in a major AQ conference.Utah can still go into BCS bowl (or NC game) with
1 loss --if Utah is ranked high enough and wins Pac-12
That wasn't my quote I was replying to it. See the next paragraph.
Johnny Ace,The Y joining the Big?? would be amazing. All of sudden,
Utah college football would be the biggest ticket around. Can you imagine the U
bringing in PAC teams and the Y bringing in BIG?? teams? We would have 16+
amazing games every year between the two schools. I would probably die a couch
potato!It's all far out speculation, but I can't imagine the Y isn't
trying to somehow land a spot in a big conference eventually. Long-term, it's
the only way to keep the program running IMO. I think independence in the short
term would be okay, but ultimately you'd be better off with guaranteed money,
scheduling, and profile of a big conference. I'm keeping my fingers
crossed, all of a sudden the state would be a football Mecca for us fans!
Running Scared!PAC 12 and Big XII don't want you. Your enemy has
joined a much better conference that will earn it a vastly increased amount of
$$$ and exposure. You are destined to be a distant 3rd in your conference in
football. It is no wonder the y is scrambling to make lemonade out of
all of its recent lemons. Cheers!
@GoBigBlueYour inflated opinion of yourself is greatly
exagerrated.U will never be USC U will never be Oregon/NikeU will never be Washington U will never be ASUU will never be
UCLAU will become the next wait for it...Washington
State....Every league has it's bottom-feeders and Utah is the latest
arrival.Your Football stadium is the 2nd smallest in the Pac12.U does not even have a Track...nor a Baseball stadium...Soccer stadium
etc. and right now, as we speak, Utah has the poorest facilities
"overall" in the Pac-12, with the exception of Washington State. You
can't even compete in the, as you say, lowly MWC, now. What makes you
think you will barnstorm your way into the new League? The Pac 12
puts great emphasis on the Olympic Sports. What are U going to do?BYU has won half of the Championships in all sports, of every Conference they
have been in, for 40 years.Last year, BYU had 9 Conference
Championships, par for the course. The U had 1, yes 1, in Tennis. That is your future Utes, Enjoy!
Bluto,You can't even compete in the, as you say, lowly MWC, now.Is the PAC-10 that much better than MWC? So, you are saying that BYU
should never be ranked because the MWC teams are that horrible and inferior to
the PAC-10? BYU has had 3 Football championships in the MWC this
decade. Yes, only 3. Utah has 3 MWC football championships in the same time
period. We've already gone over head to head and bowl games. So, tell me, does
BYU suck that much? Or are you just an eternal pessimist against the Utes?Didn't you read statement, in the last press release, that said "Holmoe
urged BYU fans to be respectful of Utah fans". I guess you just don't care. Good luck to BYU football with the HUGE target on their backs this year.
If you thought that teams in the MWC were bitter about Utah leaving for the PAC,
think about how much this last couple days with BYU will sit with them... I was
thinking finishing 3rd in conference with 9-3 or 8-4 for BYU would be good. That
might be optimistic.
BYU wants to bolster it's national profile it should do Boise Community College
has done, win a couple of BCS games.A team that is 3-3 in Vegas
shouldn't be demanding a Notre Dame exception. More worthy be like somewhere in
between the Navy and Army. Maybe finish in the top 4 in BCS standings to get
@Bluto...U will never be USC U will never be Oregon/NikeU will never be Washington U will never be ASUU will never be
UCLA...YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!!!Utah will always be
(Running) Utes!!!Unlike BYU trying to be Notre Dame, Utah will be
Utah. It's that simple!
@uteologyBYU wants to bolster it's national profile it should do Boise
Community College has done, win a couple of BCS games.............hmmmm
Boise Community College? lets see here if i remember right the one and only time
lately The "runnin" (don't make me laugh)Yewts played Boise State was up there
on the "anthill" during homecoming 2006 and Boise rolled Yewtah 36-3 and don't
give me it was a down year ..........so before you go calling anyone a
"community college" play Boise more than once every 5 years on your
non-conference schedule and "try" to win....good luck in your new conference
it's a mediocre conference where the top team is going to be sanctioned.and the
next best team may have 8 or 9 wins at best...... As far as the Cittens go
Boise owns you so leaving is your best option after this year if you don't leave
all the better..Now that Fresneck St, and Nevaduh are part of the MWC.
It's going to be fun pummeling them again along with the Toadies of
TCU....Football will be fun in 2011....oh yeah fix the tv deal please
Looks like Utah and BYU dont want to have to fight for 3rd place behind 1 Boise
State every year! and 2 TCU. Yewte fans enjoy your 2 wins a year against Power
houses Utah State and Washington State.GO BRONCOS!
@blueturf | 11:19 p.m. Aug. 20, 2010 My bad. The official name was
Boise "Junior" College. So, if BYU wants respect then they should
follow the footsteps of a former Division II "junior" college team.
Are my eyes deceiving me or did I just see a power point presentation by a BYU
AD with a slide of "Football win over Oklahoma"? Oh boy, that is priceless.
What was the next slide, a home video of Provo Airport
