I'm not sure how I feel about M.James, I know he is a proven player but I'm not sure if he would want to shoot too much. If he would not look to shoot too much and just run the offense and facilitate for others I would be all for him coming to the Jazz. He has good size,& toughness, I just haven't watched him that much.

Big Al and Deron....People know that the Jazz are
now a real contender and want to hop on board....I am very happy with this team and their future.

No offense to James but Gaines and Price are better players based on WP48. James has 3 years of negative WP48s.

The Jazz need Price to concentrate on acting like a real PG. Which he is fully capable of and which he does about every 5th game. Or they need to give the keys to Gaines.

If one of them is not running the team well enough, make a change before the trade deadline with Maynor or Brewer's TPE which are going to expire anyway.

There are plenty of players on bad teams who want to join the Jazz. Big Baby begged last year and he is on the Celtics. So there are good players or good teams who want to come.

I think that wp48 you mentioned is truely relavant with James, from what I can remember he is a volume shooter as a point/combo guard and that is why he has been on 9 teams in 9 years.

The Jazz don't need a 6'2" combo guard.

How can a player on a lousy team have a positive WP48?

It is simple, score efficiently, rebound, don't turn the ball over, steal, block, assist and don't make dumb fouls.

    WP48

    Love .349
    Miller .219
    Haywood .200
    Iguodala .205
    Lee .275
    Paul .339
    Randolph .232
    Camby (LAC) .426
    Biedrins .205
    Wallace.326

Raw WP48 tend to reward shooting efficiency and rebounding. However Chris Paul has a great WP48. Wallace also does well.

There are other overall measures of player performance but they tend to reinforce (usually but not always) WP48.

I used it a a quick and dirty screen. If I wanted to spend the time it could be used to pin point the weaknesses in James game.

Now you are right you can make stats go up and down IF you design the right biases into the data before you gather it. However, WP48 is applied to the data as the player causes it each game.

Like I said the version I reported is biased in favor of efficient shooters and rebounders.

Comparing Price, Gaines and James is fair as they are all guards and suffer from the same biases equally.

I agree: your stats mean nothing to most of us.The article hits home, because other veteran players are recognizing a good franchise. Get a life dude !!

Just saw that the other day Barnes signed with the Lakers ! If Utah had signed him for next to nothing like the lakers did, Utah would have contended for the W.C.F. against the lakers & not gone out either 4 to 1 or 4 to 0 like the past 2 years....How in the world can Utah not have signed this guy who puts the scare of death into kobe..Did anybody see Orlando's games vrs. la last season..Barnes was all over & in kobe's face getting in his head.THIS WAS A HUGE MISTAKE BY UTAH MANAGEMENT NOT TO MAKE THE TEAM MUCH TUFFER AT A DISCOUNT PRICE !!! 100% , LA WILL RUN AWAY WITH THE WEST & GET TO THE FINALS AGAIN WITH NO TROUBLE WHAT SO EVER !!! Utah might bring in James (who ? ), when they could have made an offer to Barnes -- get real ! EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED.............

    Rick,

Do you really think Barnes would give Utah the discount he gave LA? LA has:

    Better beaches
    More endorsements
    More rings

How do you know they didn't pursue him?

The Jazz dont need a guy that is only 6'2 and 35 years old. Unless he wants to go into coaching. The Jazz need another Small Forward 6'6-6'9 range. I know we drafted guys that fit that profile, but if you are hellbent on bringing in a veteran, make sure the veteran has some length and can knock down jumpers. If the Jazz want to add another veteran shooting guard, there are better guys available. Mike Finely over Mike James any day of the week.

Pass on James. For the same price pick up Shannon Brown. Strong combo guard with championship resume with Lakers.

It sounds like he's an older version of Price, so no thanks. What they need is a decent passer and shooter. Linx, cj and Hayward are decent ball handlers in a pinch as well.

Mike James would rather play in Utah than in Italy or Greece.

We already have a log jam at the point guard spot. We have Price, Gaines, and possibly Jeffers who is more of a shooting guard. Mike James is probably a decent player but doesn't really improve the team that much. I don't know how he compares to Ronnie Price.

    @JazzNation
The Jazz are no longer eligible to pick up Shannon Brown. He has the same agent as Raja Bell and Roger Mason. As soon as Bell was signed, their agent made a statement that neither Brown or Mason would come to Utah.

I think the point of this article is to let the fans know that players WANT to play for the Jazz - not that the Jazz are considering this player. I LOVE this ... it means Sloan, the organization, D-Will, and AJ are attractive/attracting good players and interest in playing here.

I'm not so sure Mike James isn't just trying to get a spot on an NBA team, so he's kissing up to the Jazz because he and/or his agent thonk he would be a fit here. Even Raja admitted, he got a better deal here. It's all about the Benjamins!

Bugoff, who invented the WP48? How good is the calculation?

Of course James would like to play for the Jazz; he is unemployed. He would also like to play for any one of 29 other teams, if he can get a job.

I'm sick of this so called wp48. It is a worthless and useless calculation. Put it to rest.

I wouldn't get mike james...and i wouldn't get Shannon Brown either...if i were to choose a backup PG to D-Will...the Lakers already got him...Steve Blake...another one is Kirk Hinrich...plus i don't think a backup PG is a need...more depth at the 4-5 spot...and another wing player that can shoot threes and defend....Ime Udoka comes to mind...i still am for a Spencer Hawes Trade...or a swing for JJ Hickson...and probably Big Baby Davis...i hope we can snag Shane Battier...or Thabo Sefolosha...we need players who are not a liability on defense...since defense wins championships...the points will come when you get good solid defense...
