I guess I have to represent the utes, he's almost as good as Wrubell, in fact he
worked as BYUs voice for a short time sort of as a TA, sort of like half of the
ute coaching staff, they learned from the best.
They never should have let Bill Marcroft go. Make up your mind Utes and keep
someone for the looooong haul again. y4lyfe: Wrubell is a good announcer
but he needs to pull it in a lot. He gets way to involved in the games. It is
good to be a homer for your team but he goes too far.
Who cares? Lockes a homer, wrubells a homer, and Riley is and willBe a
homer. As a fan, I prefer it that way.
I am a cougar supporter but enjoyed his calls on the mountain. Why he was
replace X number of years ago I have know clue, cause the guy who they had on
the last few years was less than acceptable.
I've been around for a while, and remember listening to Marcroft call games. The
U could be down by 40, and you'd think they were up by a score. Perhaps we
naturally find the voice of the opposition a bit irritating. I find
Wrubell bright and fair minded. Does he get animated when the Y scores?
absolutely, as he should, being the voice of the cougs.I like the
U's hire of Bill Riley. I find him informed and will give credit where credit is
due. As long as he's not crass, I enjoy his style. He's willing to talk college
football in the off-season. I have to wonder if Riley is in this gig for the
long-haul. I hope so, he will be iconic for the program as they move into the
I would rather listen to Riley on The Mountain instead of Todd Christensen. I
think he is HORRIBLE as an announcer. He may know football, but he needs to
learn how to say it less pretentiously. He thinks people like all of his
"pontificating" but I just find it ALL such a bore! Congrats to Bill! He will be
It's about time. The Mike Lageshultze experiment was horrible. I can't figure
out why they ever went away from Riley. He's much better than his predecessor,
and miles ahead of Wrubell. I'll give Wrubell credit for being enthusiastic,
but for my money his enthusiasm comes at the expense of accuracy.
I'm not impressed. Reilly is not and will not be a Ute
homer. My impression of him is that he thinks he's too cool to be a
Utah homer.Utah will never have better voice than Bill Marcroft in
his prime. As it should be, Marcroft loved the Utes but he never
got out of control like the current voice of BYU.
I think any change is better than what we have had. Now maybe the
professionalism in the booth will improve and, with any luck, the quality of the
broadcasts as well. There have been times these past few years that i could not
even understand the radio broadcast because of the poor technical quality, as
well as the constant talking over one another. I really look forward to better
production all around. Good luck to Bill Riley and GO UTES!
I don't care for Riley, but my 13 year old would be better than Wrubell. That
guy has got to be the biggest homer in the country. I swear listening to the
guy call a game, you think he might "pop a vein" at any moment. Given Wrubell's
age, I'm surprised I have to say "grow up." He goes crazy when the tds goes for
three yards! I love hearing him call a loss to Utah . . . sweet music to my
I thought this guy was pretty good when he was on before. The greatest was Paul
Riley's best call: Love hearing his voice when Beck threw the winning to
When I hear Wrubell calling a game I get a mental image of a 15 year
old with his nerdy buddies pretending to be a professional broadcaster.
at least its not Bill O'Reilly
I agree with those who feel the professionalism of the broadcasts need to be
improved and I hope this does it. Mike Lagashultze is probably a great guy and
he has real enthusiasm, he just needs to really work on those consonants. Anyone
who can't pronounce their own name crisply enough to make themselves understood
should probably be in another line of work.
The best homer phrases ever to come out of a homer announcer:"Caught for
the touchdown!""Caught for the touchdown!""Caught for the
I'm not a fan.
What's all the 'smack' about Wrubell? I thought an announcer and his EMOTIONAL
connection to the team was what brought ENTERTAINMENT to the broadcast. Is the UTE association to the new PAC-12 supposed to be bringing a higher
intelligence to UTAH sports media???If so then let's make a
statement UTES! Maybe you should look for some news media anchor types. Imagine
a broadcast with Dan Rather OR with Sean Hannity. Who would you rather have???
Politics aside, it's about entertainment value and emotion is what it's
about.I'll take Erin on the sidelines at ESPN and any dynamic
announcer in the box...any day!Give Bill Riley a break, the article
is about him, not Wrubell. It's about entertainment.
Paul James was the best. Marcroft always sounded like he had imbibed in one to
I always laughed when I heard Marcroft say "check it!" like "Britton Johnsen
with the rebound and outlet to Drisdom....check it.......Jacobsen" I really like Lagaschulte or however you spell it. The one who really needs
to go is Frank Dolce. Its is SOOOOOO annoying to hear Dolce say "OH!" really
loud whenever a play happens and then there is about three seconds of silence.
What was the play? Its very distracting. And Dolce whines about the refs
constantly. I did always like riley's "touchdown eric weddle,
touchdown UTAH!" line. As far as wrubell, he is passionate and i
think he does a good job.
@sammyg the smack was brought in by BYU fans bringing Wrubell up in the first
place, go back and look at the first comment. personally i don't mind a homer,
marcroft was my favorite and he was a homer bigtime.I think this is
move is at least a step forward, lagashultze was a step back for sure. I think
if Riley is given time to settle in this time around, he'll be quality.
Wrubell continually reads the clock: 14 minutes left in this one; 13 minutes
left in this one; 12 minutes left in this one. The sign of an inexperienced
sports broadcaster. At least he used to - I haven't listened to a BYU radio
broadcast for three years - drives me crazy.
Re: Live HardFor any cougar to post smack that involves the BCS is
truly laughable. Wrubell's best chance at being at a BCS game would
be to sell hot dogs based on how close the mighty cougars have been. Sure the PAC-12 will offer new challenges, but at least we are in it. Enjoy your trips to Laramie and watching games on the MTN Network for
crystal unclear low definition TV! At least you can hear the sounds of Toad and
Toady Christensen to bring back memories of days past. It think
Riley will do a great job for the Utes and would like to extend him an official
welcome to the PAC.
I think Bill Riley is great, and will continue to do a great job. I hope is the
voice of the Utes for many years to come.I do have to say that, even
though he is calling BYU games, I think that Wrubell does a good job. I think
that play by play guys that work for their school/team should be homers, but
still be honest and objective. I think both of these guys are good at that.
Even tds fans have to admit that Wrubell sounds like he's going to" blow a
gasket" calling their games. I mean, it sounds like he's hit the jackpot every
time the tds has a good play. You're not certain what's going on; did he just
win a million dollars or did the tds simply gain 5 yards. Yes, passion calling
a game is necessary, but I'm simply concerned for the guy's health.
Football season must be getting close - we are now reduced to announcer smack
talk.As for Riley - I'm glad to have him back for the Utes. I think
he calls a good game.Go Utes!!!
Who cares? Does anyone even know where to find U games on the radio? Things
haven't been the same since Marcroft left...and he wasn't even all that good.
GREAT NEWS!! I always thought Lageschulte sounded like he was trying to talk
through a mouthful of marbles, and couldn't figure out why they dumped Bill in
the first place. Welcome back Bill!!PS to all the Wrubell-haters: I
Bring Bryan Rowley back...he was the greatest field reporter ever. He would be
great as color guy in the press box.
Everything about Bill Marcroft says University of Utah. He was a great "homer"
broadcaster who made listening to his broadcasts as much fun as the games
themselves. He should call the first PAC 12 game and then the U can
move on to the univocal, dry, "professional" announcers of the big time. An
appropriate announcement of the death of the rivalry.Marcroft lived
the rivalry every day.I am totally psyched about playing Colorado
Marcroft was a "Legend" IN HIS OWN MIND...It was all about him...one of the
biggest "Blowhards" in NCAA history...Good luck to Riley because he'll need it
working with these broadcasting morons. Tied in with the U of U didn't work so
well for Tom Barberi, Brad Stone, Matt Thomas, Jeff Judkins, and Jeff Jonas now
This is hilarious.Ute fans angry that the announcer hired by BYU is
a homer. Angry that Wrubell gets excited while calling the game.Seriously? That is what is great about the guy.Hilarious.
At least it's not Chris Tunis.
Utah man, I find it hilarious that you extend Bill an "official welcome" to the
PAC. You must be the commish huh? Just because the team you root for goes to
the PAC? doesn't make you special, but I'm sure your "official" welcome means
alot to Bill.
@ 93 Cougarwe got a good laugh out of your post. Thanks for the
laughs. we appreciate you entertaining us.
Marcroft's "check that" line was great. "Touchdown, Utah! Check that- Steve
Smith down at the 34." Marcroft had an impressive career in TV and radio, but
certainly lost a couple steps at the end.To the professionalism
comments in the booth, I would agree. I like Dolce and Shaw well enough, but
too often they act like me and my buddies in the stands rather than commenting
on the game. Too often, I can't even tell what happened on the play because
none of those guys actually described the action. They were too busy yelling
Ohhh! Great play! Stuff like that. I start yelling at my radio- What happened
on the play! Hopefully an experienced play by play guy can get Dolce and Shaw
to be a bit more professional and actually describe the action on the field.
I haven't heard a Utah game broadcast on the radio in years. Marcroft will
always be the voice of the Utes for me just like Hot Rod Hundley will always be
the voice of the Jazz. Welcome Riley - you have big shoes to
fill!If your announcer is NOT a homer, why have him?93
Zoob: Really? You are reading a Ute post about an announcer? Isn't there
ANYTHING going on in the ybU blogs? That was a stupid question, obviously there
is NOTHING of interest on the ygU blogs!! HA HA HA HAGo Utes! Go
BYU still drools: Are you seriously THAT insecure about the tds that you have to
talk smack on a UTE blog about an announcer? Seriously?Dude - you
need a life!!Go Utes! Love the Crimson!
@Menacedang, you sound just like me. Ha ha, I am glad you
appreciate the "check that" humor. Yeah, how many times did he kill our hope
with that? "Mike Anderson shoots past two cougars, into the end zone, touchdown
Utah!...check that, the ball came loose"
As a PBP announcer who was Hot Rod's backup when the Jazz first moved to SLC,
and as PJ's backup for BYU games...I am happy for Bill's new gig. I think he'll
do a great job for the Utes. And while we're talking announcers...just let me
throw out that the late Bill Howard, who was the voice of the Utes before
Marcroft and then as Marcroft's mentor...was one of the best I ever knew. He was
a great guy, too!
"Utah by five"
I'm thrilled to see the mumbling guy replaced. Riley is the best they've had
since Marcroft. I still with we could get Marcroft back. He provided a great
historical perspective and was an outstanding play-by-play announcer.
Every Utah broadcast I listen to I find myself missing Marcroft, James and
Hot-Rod.That being said - continued best to the newbs.
Does that mean we also lose that obnoxious sidekick that made me turn off all
the games after we were comfortably ahead? What was the name of that whiny
voiced twit anyways?Welcome back Riley.
Thanks to VOTB for reminding us about the great Bill Howard. I worked with Bill
for 3 years. He was my mentor and a great role model...as well as a tremendous
play by play announcer. It's a shame younger listeners never had a chance to
hear him call a game. I'm grateful that I got to be his "caddie" during the
last years of his career...and got to visit his "Lombardi Room."
To all the Paul James Fans:Didn't you get tired of him calling
touchdowns for BYU, then changing the call to let us know McMahon was sacked 15
yards behind the line of scrimage.Once when Raphael Cherry was QB at
Hawaii, his "call in" question was to name all the college players whose name
was a fruit? What does that have to do with football? My favorite "PJ
Moment, he was interviewing LaDell Andersen after a game, that BYU shot poorly
in the first half, and he asked LaDell if he got out a ladder at half-time and
checked the rim for some sort of plexiglass cover... After the question, it was
dead air, then "Jone Paint and Glass" commercial. When they came back
live, laDell had left to go be with the team, but in the car driving back up
North, we were all laughing about how LaDell must have ripped into PJ after that
question.PJ had a voice, but I think he tried just a bit too hard to
be cute, and was never that insightful of the game. But his voice
will always be in my head, listening to him call BYU sports.
Do collegiate sports announcers in Utah really matter? The Mountain TV network
announcers are totally out of it. Boring! Nevertheless good luck to Bill
Riley. Utah is due for a rude awakening competing in the PAC-10. When are we
going to hear about renaming all the conferences who have pirated teams from
other conferences for the allmighty dollar. Big 10? There have been eleven
teams in that conference ever since Penn State became part of it. Wruebel is an
entertaining play by play announcer, is over the top on touchdown calls.
Thank you!! I think Riley is great. At least we won't be hearing New MeSico any
more instead of New MeXXXXXico. I know it's really picky but Lags didn't say his
freakin X's. His voice just made me cringe.
The MTN Broadcasting is horrible period... It is like watching the news in
Wyoming.... Something done in a high school class room!! Even though my Utes are
going to the Pac 12 and a better TV deal I still feel for everybody else in the
MWC that have to put up with that garbage...
I've listed to many a Ute game online at Kall radio. This is a good bring
back.Dolce is TOO much of a homer, even for my taste. There is no
conspiracy by the refs to give the game away to the other team, Frank. As far as Paul James goes, his voice was golden like liquid butter. COuld
listen to him all night. But the dude was obsessed with stats. I think, at
times, he forgot that the final score was the only stat that mattered.Still, being a homer is OK, but should still be kept in check.
@ BYU still rulesIn Ute Nation, we are a family and all a part of
the PAC, so it is appropriate to send Bill an official welcome. I
would also like to extend you an official invite to join us in Ute Nation. Soon
you will realize BYU doesn't rule any longer, and we will be waiting for you to
come over and join us.
