After BYU beat the Utes the first time this year, Boylen tried to nudge Fredette
into leaving early for the NBA. He didn't say anything more about it after Mike
Loyd came to play in the Huntsman Center. I wonder if he still wants that to
happen now? Mike Loyd seems to be perfectly capable of stepping into BYU's
starting lineup to replace Fredette.
How did he get away? And why would he want to?Hey how did the big
east do on thursday? If overseated Villanova had lost, it would have been a
clean sweep. So much for the east coast heavy rpi!
It was interesting seeing Boylen on ESPN as a commentator. He handled himself
well and made a number of insightful comments about many of the games he
observed.Congrats to the Cougars and to the Lobos! Big wins!
I am pretty sure that was 1981 when Danny scored 37 against UCLA. I had just
gotten married then and it was the next game against Notre Dame that sealed
Danny place in BYU lore. BTW, IIRC at half-time Danny had 2 less points than
then entire UCLA team.
Hah. I was AT that game. It was played in Providence RI, and a bunch of us guys
attending the Washington Seminar that year drove up from DC to see the game
against UCLA. Ainge was a monster!
I guess comparisons between Fredette and Ainge are unavoidable, but I don't
think Fredette is in Ainge's league, actually. Ainge succeeded with
a team much less talented than Fredette's, consequently, BYU succeeded because
Ainge dominated. On the other hand, I'm not sure BYU succeeds
because of Fredette. It was interesting how BYU's run coincided with sitting
Jimmer. Fredette turns his teammates into spectators with his love
of overdribbling, then they struggle to step up when they do finally get a
touch. If Fredette could be Fredette without dominating the ball so
much, that would be ideal. The Y could use a Nash-like guard more than an
Iverson. BYU is not going to get past Kansas State with another poor
rebounding effort. The Y needs its bigs to step up, and Jimmer's going to have
to involve them so they can.
Basketballogy - I am not sure that Ainge had a "much less talented" team than
Fredette. If my memory serves me correctly he was playing with two future long
time professionals in Greg Kite and Fred Roberts??? I love them both however
and like you think their games are mostly just similar in the fact that they
were and are great basketball players. Jimmer and danny have different styles.
Ainge played on the best BYU team ever. Roberts and Kite both had long NBA
careers and the guard who played opposite Danny,(Mr. Marie Osmond), was a first
round draft choice who got injured in pre-season camp and lost his shot at the
NBA. The other starting forward had a professional career in Europe. No other Y
team comes close to matching that.
Fredette is doing exactly what coach Rose wants him to do. If Rose wanted Jimmer
to pass more, he would tell him to or sit him-don't you think that Rose has full
confidence in Lloyd coming in to spell Jimmer???? So get off Jimmer, he is
doing exactly what Rose wants. If you are going to chew on someone, chew on the
bigs; they have been letting players get too many Off. boards and kept Florida
in the game with way too many soft fouls.
I love the good things that came out of this game. Hopefully even more good
things come out of the next same so they can pull out the win!
