begin from the bitter utah fans who just barely got to .500 for the year.
It is one thing for teenage or players in their early twenties to get heated,
say, or do regrettable things. That is why I don't fault Tavernari, Hobson, or
the University of Utah's Marshall or Jackson Emery for the heated exchanges.
However, coaches need to be better. It is their job to be more mature, to set
the better example. Alford failed miserably at this. He should be reprimanded
and suspended at least a game. This is not a single incedent for Alford, he has
a past history. There is no excuse for this behavior.
let the name calling and BYU insults begin! We expect your very best
shots at JT.
Alford, Tavernari and Hobson should all be reprimanded.
BYU got the short end of several calls including the end when the officials did
not have the guts to call a flagrant foul and throw Hobson out for a cheap shot.
The coach needs to be reprimanded as this is not his first time with the post
game swearing toward players and fans!!!
Alford was reacting to a player who was behaving more like a spoiled brat then
an ADULT. Do not forget about the GARBAGE that was thrown at the LOBO players
some of the FANS were also behaving like SPOILED BRATS. Tavernari refused to
shake hands with Hobson who was makingan effort to keep the game civil.
Tavarnari apologized and amends were made PERIOD.
Did he think about proofreading the column. Tavernari is a senior not a junior.
Yesterday's game was a classic. Classic games like this always bring out
emotion, discussions of officiating, and discussions on boards like this for
days after. Truly an instant classic. I will say, however, that I am extremely
dissapointed in Alford's behavior. He is a coach, an allegedly mature adult.
There is no excuse for his actions or words. Young players acting in the heat
of battle are one thing. Coaches are different and should be held to a higher
standard. Poor show, Alford, and poor sportsmanship.
This issue has so many gray lines. Not happy with Steve Alford but then
Tavernari lost his cool also. The MWC won't do anything because New Mexico is
on top and they want them to have smooth sailing heading into the NCAA tourney.
A couple of things:first, I wish posters like the first would take a
look in the mirror. If you start criticizing BYU-haters before they even get
here, they're going to feel (and be) justified in their rants. Sheesh.Second, I'm sick of hearing the arguments from everyone that the game was
called fairly b/c there were an even # of fouls. By that same logic, the refs
must've clearly given the game to the Lobos in the Pit b/c of how lopsided the
calls were. So those of you using this logic, take your pick, which game did the
refs decide?Third, if you actually watched the game, it was obvious
that the refs "controlled the game," as Alford said. Yes, there are always
missed and bogus calls, but a couple were so blatant, you really had to wonder.
For example, when their boy Gary was on the floor and spread-eagled it to kick
the ball away from the cougs (which didn't work and led to another Lloyd Jr.
on You Tube. From what I can see in the 16 second clip, Alford and Tavernari are
jawing at each other for a few seconds and then Alford and the assitant coach of
New mexico continue to instigate this against Tavernari. Real Classy-Alford....a
46 year old Alford is about as immature as the 23 year old Tavernari. Alford
should be at the very least reprimanded, and I would suspend him for one game as
well. I lost any respect I have for Alford. What an immature coach!
Wow talk about paranoia!!
"Wow talk about paranoia!!"Paranoia? Really? How often do you read online
comments either here or the Trib? That being said, cougar fans need to
To those who think the game was called evenly by the officials, you need to have
been there and sat on the third row on the end as I did. Actually, the refs
made some poor calls and many in favor of New Mexico. I could see the floor
clearly and in many cases was in a better vantage point than the officials.
Next, the instant replays bore out what I saw. Fouls called on BYU when there
were none. Hobson's fouled Hartsock's shot right infront of me. Alford should
needs to be held to a higher standard than his players. Here's hoping that the
two teams match up in the MWC tournament. Sure Loyd played great, but what if
Fredette had been able to play in the final minutes and been able to unleash his
deadly three's? Here's hoping that his health has not taken a turn for the
worse again. And to you Utes who feel you had to comment on the game. It
wasn't your game, nor was BYU playing Utah. Your petticoats are showing!
Alford was clearly out of control. Although the fans could not tell what was
being said. Why didn't he go apologize to Tavernari, if what is reported to have
been said to him by Alford is true. He was the one who was out of control and I
hope he gets a kick and pants.
HAHAHA. You cougars are funny. All paranoid about something nobody cares about
or blames JT for. Heck, the kid was just being a kid. And he owned up to it like
a man an went so far as to go to the opposing teams locker room to apologize. It
happens. The coaches though...On the bright side, a two point loss
sans your best player (best in the conference, I'm sad to say). Ute's are down,
but we'll be back. And hopefully the awesome Ute team will show up in the MWC
tournie. Good game cougars. GO UTES!A Utah Man
Hey, "Alford," what "past history" are you talking about? I'm an Iowa and BYU
grad who followed the man's career there and I have had nothing but respect for
him. He left the Hawkeyes because of a change in the AD's office amid a couple
of rough years for the team, not over any "incident." Every
competitive guy has his moments, but in general, Alford has NOT been known for
cursing or abusive behavior in his career at SW Missouri, Iowa, or UNM--VERY
much unlike his chair-throwing and player-choking college coach, Bobby
Knight. This spat with JT is out of character for Alford, not part of
a pattern of misbehavior. The guy's normally a class act, but he lost his cool
in the heat of the moment. Just like JT, come to think of it. Both will probably
get a well-deserved reprimand. Fine. But don't make a mountain out of a
molehill. Alford's human, but not a jerk. The forthcoming reprimand
ought to be the end of it.
Both showed a lot of class, a word thst BYU fans seem to love using. Alford did
not show any grace or class. He is a coach for goodness sakes and much more is
expected from him. Tavernari clearly lost his cool and his meltdown hurt the
Cougars when he failed to box out on UNM's final basket. I'll tell
you what, if these two teams meet up in Vegas it will be fiery and I think the
Zoobs will win it with a healthy Fredette and a purpose to prove a point. Go
The Rebs will beat you all again in the MWC Tourney next week again.
probably not as the utes will take them down again.
Really easy to cheer for your team when all you have to do is drive across town,
isn't it?It's true that many fans like the appeal of Sin City for a
weeklong tournament. How often do you think BYU would win the tournament if it
were held in the Marriott Center, or even up in SLC? Would UNM be a lock to win
the tournament if it were held in the Pit?If it wasn't for location,
UNLV would rarely have a shot to make the field of 65.
always an embarrassment.when will be drop sports?
byu players should be more mature than this. after all most of them are near 30
yrs of age.
Great game! Wire to wire. That's what college basketball is all about. Congrats
to the Lobos! Cougs yall had a great game and it could have gone either way.
Hopefully the Holy War will be like this and not one sited. I hate blowouts.
Don't underestimate those SLC boys. Go Utes!!
clearly, most of the people that post around here never actually played sports
competitively. alford should have taken the high road as he and his
assistant now look like total losers--especially the assistant--"what are you
gonna do about it?"--really? Thats the best you could come up with? Are you in
fifth grade? You really want to pick a fight with him? Thats really the best
course of action that you think should be pursued after you just won an awesome,
nail-biter game? Tavernari was obviously doing something wrong in
order to instigate it, but you'd think that as coaches they'd be a little more
intelligent and cool headed. in the end, most people are just going to see the
youtube video of two, over the top, immature jerks rubbing in a loss.who's to say if they really are? certainly not me. don't know them
personally at all. but the two have created a memorable albeit moronic image
I live in the Missouri Ozarks, and Steve Alford had his temper problems in the
local leagues. He is a spoiled brat.
Fans and their poor sportsmanship should be reprimanded!!! Naw, they're to
Not a fair fight, especially when Alford is being backed by his immature
assistant. The UNM coaches are all bad--basketball, football, and women's
soccer. Maybe UNM should clean house.
First time I turn on a BYU basketball game this year was Saturday's game with 2
minutes left and what do I see? BYU turnovers, missed shots, and an embarrassing
blocked shot. If I were to judge their entire season by those two minutes I
would have thought they were awful. And the "oh, he's won more games for BYU
than anyone else" excuse for poor sportsmanship by Tavernari just reflects how
winning is more valued than character. Blah blah blah, heat of the battle, etc.
so it was all UNM ? yeah byu did nothing for alford to blow up eh ? byu is never
to blame for anything lol.... figures, im surprised no one got beer thrown on
Why were all those UTE Fans throwing stuff on the floor after the game? Oh, they
were BYU fans. What is this world coming too.
The bottom line is, if BYU would have won this comment section would not be
22 years old is an adult... Don't justify his actions because of youth. Let it
go. You lost!!! Not the refs fault. You were bad sports. Not the refs fault, not
New Mexico's fault. Take responsibilty. You put yourselves on a pedistal, you
claim your better than others. Your not plain and simple. This is why everybody
loves beating you... to hear the crying and excuses.
If your a "good" team you should never EVER lose at home at the end of the year.
I project the Cougars falling to 16 when the ranking come out today, and the out
of the top 20 after a lose to the Utes on Wed.
That is why sports figures are such great role models for kids. Fighting and
swearing are just more of the same. No real penalties will be given because
this is just part of the spectacle people pay to watch. As long as the coach
keeps winning, he can do what ever he wants. Sports figures are sad role models
for today's kids. Golf anyone?
Gotta love how Alford acts like a saint and praises JT for coming in to be the
"man" when he was the one shouting expetives. He is low class all the way. Of
course, his mentor was chair-throwing Bobby Knight. I don't excuse JT for what
he did, but coaches get held to a higher standard, period. Alford is a first
class loser and doesn't even know it.
Maybe, just maybe Tavernari IS what he was called? Did anyone ever think of
that? Why do we always call the younger of the two people in any
incident a "KID". Neither are "kids" they are legal adults and all should be
could held accountable.
You know what Tavernari said Dick. Way to write your story around the facts
though--typical BYU beat writer.
this MWC conduct policy were enforced at each BYU/Utah football game. If it was
enforced, the stands would be empty and there wouldn't be enough players to
finish the game. Or does this policy only apply when BYU gets
beat?Grow up BYU fans and take your loss like men!
Tav should have to sit out of the tourny in Vegas! Maybe then he will understand
that he can't act that way and get away with it!!
Well at least Tavernari and Alford showed some emotion about the game. That's
more than I could say about the BYU coaching staff. Maybe they should be
reprimanded for doing such a horrible coaching job. Credit the players for
playing with some heart. The coaching staff at BYU should have their jobs
reviewed after such a display of ineptitude.
As I watch the YouTube video I see several players exposed to the ranting of a
alledged coach of the year. What message are we sending to our young players?
Tav is smiling and trying to remain upbeat and possitive, but. The winning coach
is insulting and abusive. Where did he learn this leadership style and how
contagious is it? I think Steven Covey ought to seek a speaking opp in New
Forget about Tavernari and Alford's exchange. I paid to watch players play not
"Referee's", boy were they bad, I'm mean really bad! Well they were about as
good as the " Three Stooges". Get better Refs. or no more season tickets!
and your mother should be reprimanded for having U!!!! And Max Hall should be
reprimanded for his poor showing in the NFL Combine.
Tavernari, Alford, and the Assistant Coach should all be suspended for a game.
That kind of behavior does not belong on the court at all.Lost in
all of this are the fans who threw trash onto the court. BYU should look
closely to see if they can find out who it was that did this and ban them for
life from any BYU games. I consider this to be the worst behavior exhibited for
the entire night. This is the first time that I feel some shame for being a BYU
Dude,Look at the box score. 18 fouls were called on each team. BYU
lost due to poor shooting percentage. As for the exchange. Who
cares. BYU lost.
Alford is a crumb just like Bobby Knight
If you are a "good" team...you should never have to go to overtime against Utah
this year. Take away your leading scorer and BYU runs you out of the building.
Have fun getting blasted in the Conference Tourney!
Its always there fault. No way Jt Tavertini was wrong he was elbowed than swore
at.I get so sick of the mountain West getting so mad at byu. We dont
I don't think I have ever heard more whining from a fan base that cannot accept
defeat. There has not been a school that received more breaks from the
officials in MWC history yet when the shoe is on the other foot the whaling is
almost unbearable. For the ones that are moving on congrats on a
good game. For the whiners, get a life.
I'm a Cougar through and through, true blue. I think the fans' behavior after
this game was completely out of line and I'm ashamed. Yours is an institution
that should be an example of good sportsmanship. Many Cougar fans are out of
touch with the mission of BYU right now, particularly in the student section.
Tom Holmoe, thank you for taking JT over to the visitors' locker room to
apologize for his actions. I believe a lesson was learned and you led by
thinks BYU fans are "classless" for throwing things on the court.
Throwing garbage in the direction of opposing players after a game.If only Maxie could have seen that, he would have been so ashamed. Or not.
The double standard is alive and well in Provo. Not one comment from BYU fans
disparaging the garbage being tossed onto the court.Classy.
It seems that the BYU fanbase and media cannot handle defeat without laying
blame on anyone else but themselves. Quite a display.
should watch the Alford and dopey assistant coach from lobo town video. I just
did and these two men are outrageous children. I don't care who you support,
this bobby knight like conduct is unacceptable. Now to the WeAC MWC,
"What are you going to do about it?"To Alford, grow up man, you won
the game..where's your sportsmanship..This didn't happen as you shook hands, the
two of you followed JT down the line taunting him!!!
at least three profanities from Lobo coaches directed at Tav in the exchange
where two men follow him back up the line taunting him..Nice job Steve??
throw me a chair!
You are so correct. Let's see, he should sit...a young college athlete who
still has the mind of a college student and makes youthful mistakes based off
emotion of being elbowed for no reason (which should have been a flagrent dead
ball foul).Let the coach keep doing what he is doing. It's pretty
classic when the whole conference is represented by what the coach says. A
leader; a coach, someone who should epitomize what the Mountain West is.
Someone who should be mature enough to walk the higher road and not mix it up
with a college kid. Yep, sure enough, make Tav sit. That would teach the
coach. Teach coaches that Flipping the bird to another coach, or swearing at a
player on video is a great idea. This conference needs to get rid of their TV
ads on the Mountain that show how "sportsmanship" is important. It
must just be something about wearing red that gives people the right to do what
THEY want and get away with it. Great ideas people. It'll be a
lame public repremand for each of the two. That is the commish's way of
Tavernari seemed out of control and really should have composed himself better
on his last night. The officials are a joke for not calling a foul on Hobson
for an elbow after the play that was RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEIR FACE. On replay
you couldn't see the elbow connect because of the angle, but you could see the
official looking right at it at the time and ignoring it. JT was obviously as
mad about the official turning a blind eye as he was about the elbow. As for
Alford, I really don't care what JT said to him. Even if Alford congratulated
JT on a great career and JT said something about Alford's mother in response,
Alford has no excuse for acting the way he did. As a coach, you don't yell
expletives at the opposing player or the opposing fans UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
I don't justify whatever JT or the fans did to set off Alford, but, as a coach,
Alford could have just said "scoreboard" and walked away, but he went after JT.
That's inexcusable in every way.
No, Tav isn't but you clearly are!
but if I saw what these two coaches did after the game, I might have poured my
beer on their mother.
In typical BYU grand fashion neither the boorish player and fan actions from
Saturday’s game will be addressed by administration. Instead BYU will
employee the Dnews to create spin articles to point blame on everyone and
everything except themselves. Within two weeks all evidence of Saturday’s
atrocities will be swept under the rug and yet again BYU will project the image
of the victim. BYU is only fooling themselves — the rest of
the world see’s them for what they are, HYPORCRITES.
I think UNM did well to win and seemed respectfull after the Tavernari apolagy.
BYU missed to many shots. Jackson Emery needed to step up and make some shots
without Fredette and he didn't do it. I think we know that if Fredette plays BYU
wins but he didn't and UNM did some nice things they have a good team.
If that's how A-ford reacts right after he's WON can you imagine if he'd lost?
Isn't when you've just won when you act all classy? I don't think I've ever seen
such a loser coach. And then the flowery sweetness interviews minutes after are
UNM football coach suspended for punching an assistant.... Lambert goes postal
on the BYU women's soccer team... Alford and assistants try to pick a fight in
the handshake line... Sounds like UNM needs some anger management classes taught
to the athletic department.
Glad to see you are staying classy, BYU!
You are the worst Ernest T. Bass impersonator I've ever seen on this board.
hands with the other team you naughty boy . . . WHAT? Why are we worrying about
this; we should be more upset that JT SHOT US OUT OF ANOTHER close basketball
game!!!JT may be a winner but I'll be glad to see him go. He's to
high risk for our team.Bad Johnathan:)
byu does it again. The Utes will dominate you again!
y has no class
anybody else seeing the irony of BYU fans here? The ghost of Max Hall rides
I saw the film and am appalled that someone representing UNM would treat a
student athelet like that. And this time it was a coach not a soccer player!
How low can we get.
by two paid professional coaches! They should be fined like NBA coaches for
their outrageous conduct.
...behavior. Did steve see this offensive conduct modeled when he played at
Indiana? The only cure is shock therapy.
I like how Alford said he went to go tell him how good Tavenari is, but there is
no evidence in the video replay of that. Just Alford going over and yelling at
him, and then following him all the way to the end of the line. Interesting...
What do you expect from Alford. He learned from the worst out of control coach
the NCAA has ever known. The winning record not withstanding, Bobby Knioght has
always led the way in immaturity and blamed it on competitive nature. Throwing
phones, chairs, abusing his players officials and intimidating the NCAA every
step of the way. Alford learned from the best/worst to ever coach the game.
you don't get to comment since your school didn't field a team this year.
shows alford's boys swearing at least three times and taunting jt, who responds
with All right, all right, all right. No wonder he had to apoligize while
Alford says nothing.Life just wasn't intended to be fair. I bet
SwearinSteve is named coach of the year. Who cares that he needs anger
management treatment. He wins and the networks like him!
First Max now Tav. Is there a theme here? Lack of sportsmanship in front of the
camera does not help sportsmanship of BYU fans. Better idolize the women's
sports programs, not the men's, when it comes to sportsmanship. Who did better
in a difficult situation, Hall (who administered a cheap shot from behind on
Sylvester after the whistle blew on the way to the Y endzone celebration, see
youtube tape), Tavernari (see article) or Kassidy Shumway, on the receiving end
of the infamous hairpull? Hall never apologized for anything, Tavernari was made
to apologize after the game and Shumway KEPT PLAYING. It's obvious who had the
most self-control, the BYU women.
"you don't get to comment since your school didn't field a team this year." And I’m sure if the Utes did have a “team this year”
Cougar fans would welcome comments from Ute fans? Riggggghhhht.BYU=
Come on Y fans & players. I'm a big Y fan, but obviously not living in Happy
Valley. This school and it's athletes have got to be held to a higher standard
because of who & what they represent. Very untimely for Tavernari based on last
week's excellent article on him and his faith. I certainely realize there is a
lot of passion in sports, but the Y players have to keep their lips closed, as
do the fans.
First their football coach punches an assistant, then Lambert turns womens
soccer into WWE and is encouraged by her coaches to continue during the match,
now Alford and his assistant...hey New Mexico AD, do you see a pattern yet?
Classy bunch you got down there...
Like the conference is going to do something negative about the coach of the top
rated team in the conference with the highest seeding in the upcoming NCAAs...
Judge not that ye be not judged
The MWC needs to suspend UNM head coach Steve Alford for the next UNM game. His
conduct was detrimental to college athletics. Not only did he swear at JT, but
he also swore at BYU fans. The MWC needs to show a backbone and suspend him for
one game. Also, what's up with UNM? First, Lambert. Second, Lockseley. Now,
Alford. They are low-class and in my opinion worse than the yewts.
Wow. Typical Zoobies, 48 hours after embarrassing your school and losing the MWC
on your home court you’ve now created the answer to all your problems as
being Steve Alford??? Yea, Steve Alford, that’s the ticket.I’ve washed my hands of any responsibility and now I can assume the
position I know best — VICTIM
Poor Alford was misunderstood. What he really said was "you're class, whole".
It was a compliment, meaning "entirely classy". JT was obviously caught up in
the moment and assumed the UNM coach was cussing him out. I can't offer any
excuses for the UNM classistant coach, however.
Even Durant on KSL said that Jimmer has got every call this year. He was
commenting on the first half that Jimmer "just was not right and must be sick"
or something. He and Rubell were already putting together the excuses for zoob
nation at the half. Rubell said this about the refs though, and I quote "Yeah,
it is like the opposite of Home Cooking today" LOL! I almost drove into oncoming
traffic laughing so hard.
I lived in Iowa City during Alford's last three years. He is extremely arrogant
and was not well liked at all by the Hawkeye fans. He was going to get fired
anyway if he stayed.
If you were not there or have not at least gone and watched the
video......PLEASE DO NOT COMMENT. Seriously listen to the UNM
coaches and the bomb Alford throws. Great example coach!!! This is incident #4
or 5 with his staff. Go ask Larry Eustachy how much class the Lobo coaches have.
It is like blaming the BYU soccer player for putting her hair in the
UNM player's hand. I was there and the few fans that threw stuff on
the floor was pretty lame.
The players are young adults too so why do people call them kids???Are you telling me they arent competitive and if they make the next level they
are gonna be babied???Cmon they dont need ear muffs
Great game to watch on TV. I thought both sides competed real hard and the Lobos
won fair and square. But poor sportsmanship abounds afterward, particulatly on
the BYU fans for throwing things from the stands. Cougs have no moral high
ground on this debacle. I will give credit to Holemoe at least for making
Tavernari apologize. Alford should be reprimanded as well.
to the dumby that said UNM isnt a good team because the had to go OT with
UTAHGet real man they just sweep every team in UTAH and if we would
have had Utah State in the Spectrum we would have snapped their home streak
This action should not have happened from player, coach, or fans! Should
Tavernari apologize? I believe reports say he did. Should Alford apologize?
Sure, if he has any integrity as a person. But hey, at least he
didn’t throw a chair or a phone at Tavernari or Fans! Should there be any
MWC actions? It’s the heat of the game and a great game it was. Lets play
ball. Cougs will get them in the MWC tournament.
Thank-you for making my morning. I love to read comments like yours. You just
set yourself up for a firestorm of criticism. Here is a summary of what I
read into your post: You are expecting BYU haters, (ie: Utah fans), to come on
here and rub it in; you are bitter because you lost Saturday; you are still
bitter about the football game when your 'Hero' turned a great victory into a
post-game 'loss'; You measure your team's success in terms of how they do
compared to Utah not thier overall performance.Paranoia is right!
At what point does our support for our team become fanatasism. At what point do
we realize that anything when taken to he extreme can become a negative. We had
a chance to show our good to the nation, but instead, we humiliated ourselves.
Turn on ESPN and watch the objects being thrown on the court and our players
acting in an unsportsman like manner. Read these post and see the excuses, bad
refs, it was alfords fault, ETC... our behavior as fans was shameful. Look in
the mirror and ask yourself if you have lets sports become a false God.
It was great to see the passion from the fans this weekend! What a great game
to be at. I loved the passion on the floor, the packed stadium, the student
section representing and throwing stuff at the punk NM players celebrating on
the floor right in front of them. This is why College Athletics rocks. To you
Utah fans...it's really sad when you come on a forum related to BYU and the
Lobos and post comments. Your team wasn't involved, go post on the exciting
forum about how the Utes are now 500...yay for not being total losers.
......and they still continueLike the dumby up top that said if
Jimmer played the second half BYU winsWhat a joke!!And
you think he would have more points than Lloyd Christmas???Big gulps
ehh catch you later
from the ledge BYU fans! Man, you kids are unbelievable!
The last 2 minutes of the game were telling. BYU made some bad decisions and
JT, again, took a wild deep 3. Hobson leathered Hardsock clean and I think Rose
was out coached. I think Rose is a good coach but has shown that he been unbale
to control JT over the last 3 years and get out coached late in many games. He
needs to quit looking down on the court in front of him qand pay attention to
the game. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone try to take out JT in the
Tourney. He has been a hot dog over the years and always has contraversy
Long time BYU fan here. The trash throwing really gave the Church, and BYU's
mission another black eye. I think it's time that the Brethren pull the plug,
on sports at BYU.
I hope they bring that strange little trainer to the Hunty.I wonder why
Holmoe didn't make that dude appologize. He was as out of line as Tavernari.
Cmon get over it
Step away said, "Man, you kids are unbelievable!" When you're chanting, "Winning
team, losing team," where's the respect in that? It is just inappropriate.
I'm with you Brother Glen, pull that plug!!!!!
Well, it is "rally around the Y time." Everyone is at fault but us... Perhaps
Coach Alford is simply right in his assessment and has nothing to appologize
for? As Max Hall pointed out, it doesn't matter if it is one fan, ten fans, or
thousands that throw stuff or - at, the U, may pour beer; everyone gets painted
with the shame. He found it most efficient to hate all Utah fans for something
that may, or may not, have ever happened involving one or two fans and not the
many thousands of others who were there. Same for JT not shaking hands after
the game, or fans complaining about the ref's, or those tossing stuff at New
Mexico, or everyone worrying about Ute fans commenting upon this situation
(which, by the way, is just too much fun to resist for us Crimson folks.) You
brought it on yourselves, now learn to live with it.
byu should go back to the drawing board and figure a way to beat the lobos
on the court and not with abusive language and trash throwing. byu coach should
control his players better, what happened at byu happened at nm when they cried
about the refs for losing their first game to unm. go lobos...
Pull the plug.. right, that sets the right message. I guess that goes along
with avoiding evil too. LDS schools can't compete without loosing their
standards. Pulling the plug would set all the wrong messages. But,
they need to reign in the programs. Having a well respected program is far more
important than trying to win a national title at any cost. I support a football
program out east that hasn't had a winning season in years. They recently hired
a new football coach a couple of years ago that is highly rated. He was offered
this year a position at a top SEC school, but turned it down because he had made
a commitment to this other school, and the players he recruited. Sure he could
have been a national contender automatically at this other school, probably made
a lot more money, but his honor, loyalty to his players and staff meant more to
him.BYU needs to get back to those standards. BYU winning a
national championship is not the big prize. Competing without bending standards
of conduct and still playing at the highest levels is. It is what would set BYU
where did your current FB coach from? When he leaves you can have Locksley, OK?
You don't seem to give any leeway for human error. Of course BYU needs to
strive to uphold its high standards. But who is to say that as a whole, it
hasn't been? Sure, athletes lose their cool and do something regrettable. That
will always be the case. The school is not defined by the actions of a few of
Our guy throws a punch, and it is a "flip, a slap, no harm.JT
refuses to shake a hand, and he "take" verbal abuse, and still goes over to the
visitors locker room to make peace. Utes throw cups of beverage, and
fans claim that it is part of the game. The Ute's HC's wife starts a
fight with fans, and she is understandably "upset", but a few BYU student fans
throw stuff on the floor, and they are classless. How soon the Uteies
for get the punch, Drca's trip, Kyle's onside kick at wyo, because the U of U is
the epitome of class.Max was right, you have no clue...
The Mountain West Conference will probably not take any action against anyone as
a result of the lack of sportsmanship in Saturday's game. This is the second
time in two weeks that Darington Hobson should have been ejected from a game,
but the officials didn't take the right action. Hobson punched Chase Stanbeck
in the game in Las Vegas two weeks ago, with the ball not in play, just like the
Tavernari elbow. The MWC leadership set the precendence several years
ago when Rafael Araujo punched Jerome Blasingame, the smallest player in the
league, but took no action because it would have required Araujo to sit out the
first round of the tournament and would have jeapordized BYU's chances of making
the NCAA tournament.Gutless decisions.
Cougars who live in glass houses.....
you live a sad existence.
Are you still whining about Hall's comments. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, Hall
doesn't like us...WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, BYU is classless, WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Seriously dude, you obviously don't realize how pathetic you look
commenting on Hall on a BYU/UNM article almost six months after the fact. Utah
football lost, Utah basketball is irrelevant and it's really long since time to
move on about the Hall comments. Besides, Hall modified his statement the next
morning saying he shouldn't have referred so broadly to the entire organization
so, even assuming your comment were timely, your point isn't valid. That said, obviously the few fans who threw empty water bottles on the court
were out of line, but they were reacting to the officiating not Alford.
Although, if I were in the front row with Alford swearing in my face I'd have
probably dumped my drink on him to get him out of my face. Alford is a great
coach, but he's completely out of control as a person. Just taking after his
mentor Bobby Knight I guess.
It seems that coach Alford does not believe in apologies on his actions last
night. Tavertini stepped up and apologized to Coach Alford at the NM locker
room. Even on ESPN Coach Alford did not indicate he made an apology to Tavertini
in any way for his actions. That in it's self shows the class that Coach Alford
has NONE. Even Bobby Knight would have made the apology if it was he who yelled
words at Tavertini. Some people think BYU's student players are cry babies, just
look at the NM coaches. One throws punches at his staff and one throws insults
at the other teams student players.Go figure, I think NM should look
at who they are hiring as coaches.
Seriously guys...reading these comments makes it obvious why everyone gates on
BYU. Nothing but excuses! Lobos swept BYU and Utah. Accept it and move on.
And by the way, Alford simply stated the truth about Tavernari. Hurts doesn't
The whiners have never lost a game in their mind. UNM might have given you the
biggest favor by allowing you whiners to play 2nd round NCAA games in SLC. You
sorry souls should be praising UNM instead of hating on them. And no BYU fans
threw trash..uh hum...get BYU out of the MWC and lets see if they can fend for
byu's public relations department has had to put in a lot of time this year
cleaning up messes surrounding their athletic programs.Alford was
really immature in this situation but Taverneri was no saint either. I loved seeing the clips of "a few" fans throwing stuff - it was more than a
few which is so odd because byu never tries to minimalize their own bad behavior
right??This is now one of the top stories being run on ESPN - way to
go coogs.Of course it was all brought on by someone else - I'm sure
no byu fans are to blame.Keep living right.
Hey Montana Cutter,What about the earlier incident this season with
BYU? Wasn't a punch thrown to Jackson Emmery. Sounds to me that BYU continues
to be painted as Victims. Wow, wonder what Emmery provoked to onset a punch?
Maybe the message BYU coaches are sending to their players should
also be reviewed. FYI, Tavernari has always been a crybaby and will always be a
crybaby. What has Coach Rose done about it? HUMMMM.......NOTHING AND IT WAS
BYU and high standards....all talk and no actions. Lose with class because you
expect it when you win.
Alford was just frustrated because he couldn't yank T's hair. In good NM
fashion, Alford will choke his assistant.
Hey Chris Miles has to get a job now since he's been there since 2004
"Cougars who live in glass houses....."Which is where I think Uties
have lived for so many years, telling BYU fans how to act, while they embarasses
themselves on and off the field and court, in the stands and the stadiums...A BYU player does not shake hands, then goes over to the locker room of
the other team, and Ute fans still whine and thow the rocks.Get a
winning program, beat BYU, and show some class up on the Red Hill, then maybe,
just maybe, you can worry about the actions of BYU players and fans.
The no-call here is the problem. Anytime someone gets hit, is a technical.
Utes call it whining of BYU, but they would whine worse if their player was hit.
Being competitive is not an excuse for hitting someone and should not have been
dimissed. If J.T. would have elbowed Hobson, a technical would have been called.
New Mexico got away with two, elbowing and profanity. Also a foul at the end of
the game was not called and more obvious than the one where Jackson Emery stole
the ball about a minute earlier which cost two points and two foul shots for
the opponents. This game was gift wrapped for the Lobos just like the first
game.--Shouldn't the cougars have had free throws for elbowing? Was this game
"Alford simply stated the truth about Tavernari."Personally I agree,
but who am I to worry about their personal relationship? But, then
again I think Max Hall "simply stated the truth about" The University of Utah.
"Hurts doesn't it?"Let's both man up and stop the whining, and agree
that the truth was told. Can you man up and agree?
I wish I could say I just felt disappointed that the Cougars lost a hard fought
game, but I can't. That game ranked in the top 5 worst officiated games I have
ever seen on any level. Fouls were called where there was absolutely no
contact, fouls were not called when they were obvious (example: the hockey-style
gut check to Lloyd by New Mexico that sent him flying out of bounds), turnovers
that were called/not called unfairly, etc etc. I understand that New Mexico is
a great team and played a great game, but with how the officials were favoring
New Mexico I can feel a bit of Tavernari's frustration. If the refs had been
fair BYU should have won by about 8-14 points, even without Fredette at his
best. What a shame.
If you would just win your games on the court, and in the stadium, you would not
be required to take out so much frustration on BYU's athletic program.Could we get a little more hustle from U out there. And try
recruiting a better group of athletes, and hiring better coaches, ones that want
to stay, not ones that need to stay (Kyle excluded, he was brought up a Cougar,
and learned from Lavell)...
Another sad sad cougar fan with his pedestal mentalityWe could
have won if the REf's were fair and if we had pepto or tums - dude seriously get
over it!!you flat out lost and were outplayed outrebounded in your Marriott wannabe Spectrum or Pit
" (Kyle excluded, he was brought up a Cougar, and learned from Lavell)..."And left for a much better job. BCS BAAAABBBYYY111
Bryan - get over itYou lost You lostLick your wounds and
move forward dude
Hey you Napoleon Dynamite's get over it, and accept that you lost!!Think forward when you lose to Texas A&M the 3rd time in a row in the
I agree that we as fans can't put the game entirely on the officials. If BYU
had hit one or two more of those wide open 3's then it would have been all over
and so UNM certainly deserves credit for keeping it so close until the end. The frustrating thing as a fan, and what obviously frustrated JT, is to
have so many poor calls go against BYU in the last 2 minutes of the game (Emery
foul on steal, foul called on clean BYU block, missed elbow at JT, etc.). At the end of the UNM game in the PIT Rose walked up to the officials
and congratulated him for the win. Provo was more of the same and greg wrubell
summed it up nicely by saying BYU was "getting homered in reverse." That's a
sad commentary on MWC officiating. Of course UNM is a great team and performed
well enough to win, but they would have lost had the officials called it fair.
That's a fact and it's not meant to take anything away from a great UNM team or
turn attention away from BYU's inability to take the game.
The UNM Coach SHOULD be used to dealing with a loud and mouthy crowd (the PIT is
their home). If you've ever been to a game in the PIT... You know
there are no louder and hostile fans ANYWHERE in the MWC (including Wyoming).
Why do you think UNM sometimes has no home losses even in years when their team
stinks on ice. The crowd at the PIT is known for being intimidating to visiting
teams, players and coaches. For the UNM coach to loose his temper and cuss-out
the BYU crowd after all the abuse HIS FANS dish out in the PIT is the ultimate
I think alford was correct in his assessment of JT. If it looks like a duck,
smells like a duck, quacks like a duck... Its probably a DUCK!! The funny thing
is byu coaches know it too. Why would they muzzle JT all of last year and not
let him talk to the media after the game??? Hmmmm.... maybe because he's a loose
cannon!! I love how byu fans are so offended by what alford said, but they don't
seem to mind when JT or max hall was caught on camera saying much much worse.
Just goes to show you that byu fan always turns their heads when its one of
their players. I also didn't know there where so many utah fans at that game
throwing trash on the court either. Ooh wait there wasn't!
JT kept walking the handshake line. The UNM coach got out of line to follow him
and keep it going and ramp it up. What did he think... JT was just going to
appologize to him right there in the line while the coach is cussing him
out???If the UNM coach would have kept on walking (like he's
supposed to) instead of jumping out of line to go after JT... None of this would
have happened. The coach was in the wrong for going after JT and
keeping it going instead of brushing it off and moving on and shaking the hand
and greating the next player in line. That's what these post-game lines are
for. Not a last chance to take a shot at one of the opposing players. The UNM players were able to put the emotions of the game behind them and
shake hands with BYU players. The UNM coach should look at his players and
their good example instead of blowing his top.
Once again we have to debate and defend ourselves against the useless ute fans
who had nothing to do with anything. I thought it was interesting that after NM
beat BYU there were 202 comments, when I checked. At the same time the article
talking about utah beating Wyoming there were only 23. It is a sad, sad world. I
bet your heads must scream all the time. JT didn't shake a hand...GET OVER IT.
Once again, I wish I could feel bad for u guys, but I just don't. So full of
hate and ignorance. Silly, silly utes. "Oh be wise, what more can I say."
I can't believe I slogged through all these comments and the self-absorbed
stupidity many of them include. To my fellow BYU fans, let me make a couple of
points:1. I attended the game and sat on row 24 - close enough to
see clearly what was going on.2. The game was no more or less well
officiated as any other. I did not any tendancy on the part of the refs to
create bad situations for the Cougars. I have never seen a game with perfect
officiating - calls well be missed, other call made opposite of what really
happened because - guess what - the refs are humans!3. The fans who threw
stuff on the court are immature morons and if they could be identified should
have their All-Sports pass revoked - at least for a year. That is never
CONTINUED: 4. The coaches did everything they could to win. I personally
would have prefered to have Brandon Davies in there than Noah Hartsock for the
last minute of the game - he had been playing much better up to that point, and
I think he would have been able to get past Hobson for the layup, but then that
is a judgment call. 5. If we were to find one single event that led
to the loss, it would be Tavernari's loss of control after Hobson's elbow. It
was not hard enough a shot to get so upset about, and Emery dragged clear down
to the baseline to try and calm him down. Within seconds of resuming play he
jacked up an ill-advised three that missed, then failed to block out on a
rebound - and that was all she wrote. If Tavernari had not lost
focus because of his perceived injustice, the outcome could possibly have been
different. After all, the game could not have been much closer. He allowed
Hobson and circumstances to contol him to the detriment of the team. Alford
spoke the truth - however inappropriate for a coach - for that moment.
Come on ya'll.....it's BYU basketball it does not matter. They will play 1 game
in the tournament and then be done. Just not enough athletes to compete at a
Foolis utes, thats what U do. WaaBut even you should be able to
recognize tha Alford was out of line... The chicken hearted MWC issued a public
formal reprimand(big deal) and ESPN let him skate. He's part of the fraternity
and didn't even say sorry!
At the Pit...BYU called for 25 fouls, NM 17.MC...Even at 18.If the
refs would have given BYU the same advantage they gave NM at home, we would have
have slaughter NM.
1) 2 of the first 3 posts were childish BYU fans egging on Utah fans to say
something... then they will point fingers and throw a fit if they do! 2)
When people are talking about the problem with the program and poor behavior,
they aren't talking about JT, they are talking about the fans throwing things,
people getting sports out of perspective with testimony!!! So, the comment "The
school is not defined by the actions of a few of its athletes." is completely
missing the point! 3) Comparing the number of fouls called between one
game and the next is about as foolish and invalid as can possibly be! 4)
I am not a Utah fan or a BYU fan. I am a Lobo fan who thinks that Alford did
not behave with maturity and self control. 5) I also wish Jimmer would
have played because I preferred the victory to be over a full strength Cougar
team! 6) Thanks for the apology JT, no worries! 7) Oh, and the way
the "other" BYU players (Lloyd and Haws) stepped it up was impressive!
it shows that the fans at byu are human, they do get angry too, and know what is
fair. i'm glad jt didn't get hurt, hoping someone was watching his back when
"the two" were coming after him. hey immature, i'll be willing to say that these
30 something players will jump all over you in a game of horse. great game.
I have no problem with BYU players or fans being angry at this New Mexico
injustice. I wish more Americans became angry at injustice instead of
sanctioning it with their silence. If UNM won the NCAA championship in April, it
would always have an asterisk by it: *Won at the expense of
saw the film of this... but didn't get the words. Didn't see the game.shoooot. missed some excitement in my life.
