Good D and great rebounding. Can't wait for Saturday!

Very funny. The outcome of this game wasn't hard to anticipate as San Diego State played their characteristic um... bad game. Anyone who took the time to look out from under their dunce cap would have known this would be an easy game for the Cougars. Jimmer lit up a fat one and BYU is easily one of the best teams in the country. HaHaHa.

Congrats Cougs! Another double digit home win. Keep it up against the Lobos on Saturday!!!

I was able to get an internet feed while monitoring a class.

The three J's did the job for the Cougars, but it was a team win too!

One game at a time is the key . . . I was worried about the Aztecs.

Way to go, men. Glad to see Utah top Air Force.

Solid win for BYU. A win on Saturday puts them in the driver's seat for the conference reg. season championship.

Great rebounding and defense. Concerned about Saturday against a more athletic New Mexico team.

    One game at a time . . . .

Utah will be ready next week, but that game can take care of itself!

The Three J's took care of the offense!

Be scared? Why? We are expected to lose and have nothing to lose... what is there to be scared of silly person??? Oh wait, I know, it sounded cool in your head. By the way, good win tonight... big game, I thought San Diego State would give you all you wanted and you beat them fairly soundly. Jimmer was solid, 26 points, yeah but 6 rebounds and 5 assists. As much as I hate to admit it... impressive.

  • Full house...

Saturday will be a great game. Hopefully UNM plays like they did against Air force, and BYU also plays like they did against Air Force. :) Should be a close, exciting game.

  • Great Game Cougs!
    Feb. 24, 2010 9:40 p.m.

Rebounding and the trademark transition won it for the Cougars in front of their own sell-out crowd for a sweep in the series against SDSU. And it was cool to see it on CBS College Sports. Take it to the Lobos Saturday, BYU!

Cewgs - does it really matter whether you get a #4 seed or a #9 seed? One and done is one and done no matter how you look at it.

My Utes still have as good of a chance at winning a tourney game as you do

    Go UTES

Lobos have no chance. Top 10 come Monday.

TDS - You're going to lose to New Mexico, us in SLC, probably the 2nd round of the mwc tournament, get another #9 seed, and then well you know the rest.

I'm a BYU fan and I think it is childish the way some BYU fans are bringing up the failures of Utah in this article. Without any trash talk from Ute fans, you guys are writing irrelevant posts. You are just as annoying as some of the ignorant Ute fans. Just knock it off. Focus on BYU and its success.

What haters are you talking about? Are you asking for it? Ridiculous. You people are filled with so much hate yourself you don't even think straight. Then come on here asking for it and when you get it, you have the audacity to be indignant! Silly really! Congratulations BYU... could have been a tough game. Fredette was impressive... adding 6 rebounds and 5 assists!

  • I'm glad I have tickets
    Feb. 24, 2010 10:08 p.m.

I'm excited that I get to go to the game on Saturday. This will bring back memories of Danny Ainge and Kresimir Cosic when the Marriott Center was really rockin.

  • re: How it is
    Feb. 24, 2010 10:10 p.m.

Have no chance? What a silly comment!

  • Jimmer=Danny
    Feb. 24, 2010 10:10 p.m.

Jimmer can take over a game the same way that Ainge did. But Jimmer has a really good supporting cast. This is the best guard line ever for BYU.

  • One and Done | 9:44 p.m
    Feb. 24, 2010 10:10 p.m.

    Keep up the stupid comments.

Where do you want the UTES to go?

  • Rubbing it in
    Feb. 24, 2010 10:17 p.m.

Fellow Coug fans can rub it in the Yewts all we want, but truth be told, The Utah game remains the toughest remaining on our schedule.

If UNM "finds a way to win," then we truly are pretenders. I VERY much doubt that will happen.

    Why?

Jimmer Fredette has the ability and focus to take over a game when said game is in doubt.

I honestly believe in this group of players as a unified bunch, a committed group, a team with a true star as well as a very capable cast that cares more about each other, cares more about winning than they do about personal accolades--even those will certainly come.

I like rooting for team that is not only athletically good, but also has enough maturity and humility win a lot of ball games.

  • RE:One and Done
    Feb. 24, 2010 10:35 p.m.

"My Utes still have as good of a chance at winning a tourney game as you do"

Uh, the only flaw in your little fantasy world is that it doesn't work because your Yewts won't even be at the REAL tourney. So, while you're right saying one and done is one and done, isn't that better than none and done?

    Great Game Cougars,
I remember just a few years ago we were fliped in our win-loss record.
I love to see BYU beat Utah, but Utah will be back,
    just not this year.
NM will be a difficult game, I am glad we are at home.
Now if we can just get the MWC to move the conf. T to the MC!

  • re: No BYU Bigs
    Feb. 24, 2010 11:29 p.m.

How many times do they get the ball? How can you be part of an offense when you don't get the ball? The guards can pass it into them many more times in a game and they chose to shoot or pass to another guard instead, who then shoots.

    Feb. 24, 2010 11:57 p.m.

Am I the only one that has noticed that Tyler Haws' outside shooting has dropped off considerably in recent games? I like his hustle and beyond his years ability to play, but I miss that additional threat from the outside. JT has stepped it up considerably. If BYU has four confident outside shooters, they become very difficult to defend and defeat. I wish them well as the season winds down to tournament time. Regardless of how this season ends, this team has been special to follow throughout the season.

  • What?
    Feb. 25, 2010 12:07 a.m.

I always wonder what game people are watching when they comment on the bigs for BYU. After watching just a few times you can tell the offensive scheme is built for the guards and the bigs scoring is just extra points. Their offense has so few plays for the bigs and it's really just about them helping the guards get open and score.

    Feb. 25, 2010 1:24 a.m.

Good game for the Cougars tonight. They beat SDSU by 14. Good outside play and good inside play in outrebounding SDSU. They simply played a good team and beat them in all aspects. Coach Fisher was very complimentary about the Cougars play.

Get ready to play UNM now. One game at a time. Wish I was travelling in Utah and had tickets as this game will be a battle, like a repeat of the game at the Pit. Unlike that game, BYU will win this one in a close one by 6.

    Go Cougars.

Rose has 37 loses in five seasons. Are you kidding? There are teams that are approaching half that many loses sofar this partial season. Forget one and done. Get your own team right before you start worrying about someone else's team. Particularly when your team has only been to the tournament one time in that five years.

  • RR
    Feb. 25, 2010 7:01 a.m.

BYU is the best team in the state. It's amazing! They lead many stats in the nation, which adds to their success. BYU, Weber, and USU could all possibly get in, with BYU being the highest seed and most likely to move on, if they actually get a good draw. Keep it up!

  • Big Rich
    Feb. 25, 2010 7:30 a.m.

I want to add my voice and ask for the all of the immature babies at BYU and the U to stop whining and pointing fingers at each other. Honestly, you're like little kids crying to their mom. The U, USU, and BYU are all great schools. Some years one is better than another. Wake up! It will always be that way. All of your "I'm better than you are" crying is getting really, really old. You almost wonder if there is anyone grown up at either school.

  • Why
    Feb. 25, 2010 7:45 a.m.

Why are Ute fans talking trash on here and why are Y fans baiting them? Utah is not even in the equation this year for the MWC championship nor the NCAA tourney. Don't kick them while they're down. They're a non-issue. Biggest game of the year is this Saturday against NM. Huge game.

  • Y Guy
    Feb. 25, 2010 7:46 a.m.

NM BYU will be a good matchup. Finding ways to win involves invoking the right strategies as well as general athleticism. That's what makes playing tough teams so interesting. Looking forward to seeing how Coach Rose game plans the tough games throughout the rest of the season.

  • Ref: One and done
    Feb. 25, 2010 7:50 a.m.

Does it matter whether we get a #4 or 12 seed. Yea, just like the utes did last year with a #5 and still got trounced by the 12 seed. I've seen this Cougar team play and they're no 2009 version of the pathetic utes that lost to a # 12 seed. Too bad you have nothing to root for this year. Your football team was third best in the conference and your b-ball team is looking at trying to avoid the play in game for the MWC tourney. What a joke!!!

  • trueblue
    Feb. 25, 2010 7:52 a.m.

BYU basketball, hmmmmmmmmmmmm. I have watched BYU basketball for almost 40 years. In that length of time I have seen some pretty good teams. Most of those years have ended in frustration and a feeling of "were good but not great". That is the way I see the team this year, "good but not great". Right now, I see the cougars losing in the conference tournament and making the NCAA tournament and losing in the first round. BYU needs to be willing to go "Toe to Toe" with whoever they play. It seems to me, BYU basketball players in general, lack the toughness to compete at a realy high level. Sorry Cougs but your going to have to make a believer out of me and that means, Conference tournament champions, conference champions, and atleast two wins in the NCAA tournament. GOOD LUCK !

  • Tony
    Feb. 25, 2010 8:06 a.m.

Congratulations to BYU on beating SDSU. I'm a UNM fan and looking forward to Saturday's game between the Cougars and the Lobos. UNM is the definite underdog in this one, I just hope it's a good game. The Mountain West is a strong conference, and I think BYU, UNM, SDSU, UNLV and maybe even one other team deserve an NCAA bid, but we know that will never happen.

    Feb. 25, 2010 8:11 a.m.

Get ready to play a real team that has actually beaten ranked teams BYU. Brace yourself for a big Lobo beat down. Jimmer wont get his average. We're too fast and athletic. Cougars are going down Saturday!!! Go Lobos!

  • Layup vs dunk & HD
    Feb. 25, 2010 8:11 a.m.

Isn't it cool to be able to watch a game in HD every once in a while?

Why is it that the BYU big guys can't dunk a ball when they need to? When you have a team than has been blocking shots all night, just dunk the stinking ball. As they said in Remember the Titans "Leave no doubt Herman!".

Great win, and great unselfish play throughout the night. Sat should be fun.

    Hey Tony,

    Thanks for the good post.

I also look forward to a good game. Our family cheers on UNM except when they play BYU. Our son played in the PIT a few years ago, and our trip to Albuquerque was great. Great people, great city.

I should be a great game.

Good luck in the NCAA tourney Lobos.

  • Uh True Blue
    Feb. 25, 2010 9:02 a.m.

What team have you been watching? BYU is deep, talented and well coached. When the game is on the line, any one of four players can step up. People who really know basketball are calling the Cougars the best team in the west. Yes, they stumbled twice, once at USU and again in Vegas, and yes, they may lose another one before the tournament, but one and done is not likely in the cards this year. Enjoy the ride.

  • UNM Fans... BYU Fans...
    Feb. 25, 2010 9:02 a.m.

Great game and win for BYU last night. I too was worried about the size and athelticism mismatches, but BYU did what it is suppose too. Very impressive. I have blue blooded, but I too, no matter how good this team has been thus far; have butterflies thinking about the NCAA tourney. I don't care if BYU is a #2 or #12, they should win either way. Until they do, we will always be the Buffalo Bills of the NFL (make the game, and always lose, never remembered for the phenominal seasons).

As for UNM fan (EL Camino)... don't forget that Jimmer pimped slapped the Lobos for 27 on their home court. Don't know if he'll do the same Saturday, but I doubt UNM will be the first to figure this kid out? This game we will need the bench and other supporting cast to step up.

Hey 'True Blue' you're a big phony. When you say, "Sorry Cougs" you reveal you're not one of us. And 'Big Rich' who wants everyone to get along. You say that Utah is a great school. In what?

  • hoopman
    Feb. 25, 2010 9:30 a.m.

BYU is turning up and heat...the players and coaching staff are really having a great year. Coach Rose is a fine recruiter, has a deep and talented team, and is one of the finest coaches in the nation. Fredette and Emery are special players...

Utah State has rebounded from a shaky start and are on a roll. Give them credit! They have been playing smart basketball and, as usual, Coach Morrill is getting a maximum effort from his players. He and his staff have transformed this group with a great system, and they are believing in themselves again.

Utah has underachieved...Coach Boylan is erratic as are his players. With a record of 13-14, they are just as their record indicates, a very average team, with very average talent, and a disappointing coaching staff.

I met a Go Utah friend in a mall parking lot yesterday and noticed his BIG UTE FAN red hat stuffed in the back of his car, under some tools and rags.

Great win for BYU. A win on Saturday and BYU will be regular season conference champions regardless of what happens in the rivalry game. I think this is probably BYU's year to win out in vegas and make a run in the NCAA's, but I don't criticize fans who, like me, are guardedly optomistic. If BYU loses to UNM on Saturday or loses in the first (very unlikely) or second (very possible if against UNLV) round in vegas then they'll be severely punished come seeding time and a 7-9 seed makes that first round game a tough one. If, on the other hand, BYU wins Saturday and then at least gets to the championship game in vegas then we can safely assume BYU will be in the 3-6 seed range and probably win at least one game in the NCAAs and possibly make a visit to the sweet 16. It's clearly essential that BYU get the monkey of its back as the players play tight in the NCAAs and a win would do wonders for the team's confidence, but it all starts Saturday and in Vegas in my view.

Sound more like a disgruntled Ute fan. If you are a BYU fan, find a new team.

BYU really looks good. I'm not counting on a NC but they just beat a very athletic SDSU who have really been on a roll. BYU are not athletic but they are very skilled and shoot very well. I bet SDSU wishes they could shoot as well. Go Cougs. Big game Saturday.

You may have been watching BYU basketball for 40 years, but you're either a crimson-glasses wearing Utah fan or an Eyeore-glass-half-full BYU fan.

In either case, you are obviously lacking in basketball analysis skills because this is THE BEST BYU basketball team since the Danny Ainge led 1981 team.

The Cougars are talented, well-coached, and have great team chemistry.

BYU is not only beating their opponents, the Cougars are DOMINATING most of them.

Wake up and smell the Postum because you're missing a great BYU basketball team.

  • los Lobos
    Feb. 25, 2010 10:13 a.m.

I've read many comments from MWC coaches and sportswriters claiming that the Aztecs are the most athletic team in the MWC.

It doesn't really matter, though, since BYU's deadly outside shooting and transition game will easily compensate for any "athletic advantage" the Lobos may have.

Saturday's game will be what college basketball is all about. Two highly ranked, skilled, well-coached teams playing for the MWC championship, easily THE BIGGEST GAME in the history of the MWC.

Fortunately for BYU, the Cougars get to play this one on their home court where the Cougars haven't lost to the Lobos since 2000.

Lobo fans are in for an eye opener when they see what the Marriott Center has planned for them on Saturday.

    cya then

How did Haws beat out Abouo for playing time? Remember at the beginning of the season when Abouo was the starter. I think Abouo is a better player then Haws and Abouo deserves more playing time. Why does Rose not give Abouo more playing time?

  • Sweet 16
    Feb. 25, 2010 11:49 a.m.

Cougs should beat a very good UNM team on Saturday. Big reasons: Bench play and unique combination of efficient scorers and good defenders. BYU should be able to win 2 games in the big dance as well.

No one can stop Fridette from getting a good shot.
Emery's defense changes games by 10 points.
Tavineri and Haws are great rebounders and will always stretch defences with their good shooting.
Our bigs are solid and very good at what they do. Solid rebounders and can score if the offense stalls. Miles hits his free throws consistantly as opposed to last year. Abuao is very phyical and will out rebound much larger players. Not many teams nationwide cause me to worry except maybe Syracuse. Bring on Duke, Vilinova, kentucky, and Purdue, Ohio State would run out of gas playing BYU.
This is not your old BYU team with weak players in key spots, everyone on this team knows his role and are efficient at one or two componants of the game. Cougers a #3or #4 seed and a Sweet 16, if they play in the West-a final 8.

If you were a head basketball coach that had won 78% of his games the last 5 seasons and soon to be 4 straight MWC championships, you'd understand.

Abouo is a good player and it wouldn't be surprising to see him starting next season; but this season, Haws played his way into the starting role and you don't start fiddling with starting lineups at the end of the season just because a player has a couple of off nights.

    Feb. 25, 2010 1:52 p.m.

It would be nice if BYU wins the tourney, but it is much more important to win the regular season title. I don't mean to sound like Big Rick when he was at the U, who basically said it was a joke.

The higher seeding will come from winning the next 3 games, making it a 4-peat and outright this year.

I have a question on MWC seeding. If BYU wins out, they will be the #1 seed, UNM #2, but who will be #3? UNLV and SDSU will win out and be tied at 11-5. What is the tie-breaker? A coin-flip?

I have been the the Vegas-invite every year. It is easier to knock off the Rebels earlier. If you can get them in the quarters or semis, it is less of a home crowd. As teams lose, a lot see to locals. The fans who stay root against BYU and become rebel fans anyway. If UNLV gets the #4, I would much rather play them in the semis than the final.

Re: Utes Fans Pulling For Lobos: As much as I'd like to explain why you're a hater rather than a fan for cheering against BYU, I have to just give you props for actually admitting to being a Ute fan. Most of your collegues are too embarrased of your sorry program to even admit they're Utes so they post as SDSU, UNM or even CSU fans (because we know the DesNews readership in those regions is off the charts). I commend you for your bravery, not your intelligence (you are a ute fan afterall), but definitely for your bravery. You sir, deserve a nice refreshing bud light. A lesser fan would pretend he's someone else (like a fan for a MWC team that isn't fighting for its life to stay out of the play-in game in Vegas). So I salute you my little yewt sister. Post on my team's articles any time you want.

  • Mr. BYU
    Feb. 25, 2010 2:05 p.m.

To "UNM" and others talking about the "unathletic" BYU team: I guess you guys are not reading or understanding what everyone is saying. BYU is NOT considered more "athletic" than maybe UNM, SDSU or UNLV but we've beaten 2 out of three of them.

BUT...numerous opposing coaches say that BYU's strength is their transition game. We can run their butts up and down the court and out the door--like they did to San Diego State (a more athletic team) so go figure! Bottom line is that you better figure out a good way to beat a very good SLOWER team on Saturday or you'll get your fannies handed to you!

BYU has only lost to UNLV and UNM on THEIR home floors. BYU gets UNM in Provo on Saturday in front of a SOLD OUT Marriott Center crowd of 22,700 fans and UNM will know they are in a big time game!

"Go New Mexico, and oh yes GO UTES!!!" Almost forgot about your own favorite school?

Wow, it is really getting bad at Utah. I'm starting to feel really bad. When I used to with Utah would struggle, I never meant for it to be like this. I'm sorry Utes.

  • Re: MWC tourney
    Feb. 25, 2010 2:37 p.m.

UNLV would be the 3 and SDSU the 4 based on the fact that UNLV beat the 1 seed once and SDSU got swept by the 1 seed.

Thank you...no really thank you. You simply summed up every person who "cheers" for the utes. You simply root against others and not for your team. It all comes down to motives and yours are bitter. I wish I could say I feel sorry for you, but I don't. I wonder how you approach other facets of your life. Probably really poorly.

  • To all you BYU haters...
    Feb. 25, 2010 3:09 p.m.

Get used to it boys and girls, these so-called slow un-atheletic types you keep referring to in your comments here, keep whooping your butts on and off the fields/floors, where ever it might be. BYU has always been and will continue to be the flagship school of this conference whether it was the WAC before, or the MWC today, or wherever the play. Get use to being 2nd fiddle, and everything you do when facing the Cougars. When you have won 40% of all the sport championships over the years (MWC), consistantly place in the TOP-25 of the Sears-cup, and have more nationally recognized athletic accomplishments on your resume (as BYU does), will always conjure up the little yappy dogs (i.e. Utes, Lobos, Rebels, Aztecs etc), nipping at your heels (BYU) will continue to whine and yelp and cry, trying teardown and ridicule these "slow, white guys that can't compete w/ our superior atheletes" are consistently the ones on top of the standings. Keep it going all you BYU wannabees, BYU owns you, and you know it. Otherwise, these comment boards would be empty...Champions always command attention...Keep going BYU!!!

  • UNM2
    Feb. 25, 2010 3:18 p.m.

Hello? You basically are arguing with the same points I just made. I just admitted that overall BYU is a better team, but overall athleticism is not their strong point. This is why BYU has failed to win the past few years at the dance. If the cougars don't shoot well and turn the ball over they are very mediocre. If everything is clicking for them they could beat anyone out there. Athleticism and speed can allow teams like UNM and UNLV to advance without shooting the ball from the perimeter particularly well because they can bet you off the dribble, go to the rack, and live at the foul line. I'll be the first one to admit that the Lobos do not shoot the ball well from the perimeter. By the way those of you accusing me of being a Ute fan, I grew up in NM, am LDS, got married, and moved to Utah. I like all 3 teams, but UNM will always be my favorite.

  • Sigh
    Feb. 25, 2010 3:21 p.m.

Post 3:09 p.m. is the reason people don't like the cougars, why can't our student body figure this out? Isn't humility taught at BYU? Lets be gracious winners because it's not too long ago we only won one game in a season.

  • BYU Crowd
    Feb. 25, 2010 3:22 p.m.

I know the BYU fans think they have a great crowd, and they are loud and there are a lot of them, but they don't do anything. They play the fight song 100 times and they have no organized cheers. The best crowd is Utah State! When we went up for the BYU/Utah State game I was amazed at what that crowd does. That's what the BYU fans need to be doing!

  • Best Crowd or not
    Feb. 25, 2010 3:42 p.m.

BYU has won 76 of their last 78 games in the Marriott Center.

I'll take winning over having the "best organized cheers" ANYDAY!

  • @Knock it Off
    Feb. 25, 2010 3:45 p.m.

  • Re: Sigh
    Feb. 25, 2010 3:47 p.m.

We don't care why people don't like us, just as long as they continue to not like us is the important thing. You know which fans are like? Air Force fans. That tell you anything?

  • Re: BYU Crowd
    Feb. 25, 2010 3:48 p.m.

You're right, our crowd is pretty week.

Sincerely Wake Forrest players that said that was as tough of an environment that there is in the nation.

  • Re: BYU Crowd
    Feb. 25, 2010 4:22 p.m.

I don't really think BYU needs pointers from Utah State on how to be a good crowd. Those coordinated cheers are cute and all, but the MC gets plenty loud when the game is going without having a cheer coordinator telling everyone what to say. I'm really not trying to knock USU and it's a great atmosphere at the Spectrum, I just don't think we need to steal their crowd behavior like we stole their colors.

  • Long Time Cougar
    Feb. 25, 2010 4:46 p.m.

I will hand it to Utah State and their organized cheering and loud crowd-one of the toughest environments in the country.

However, at 22,700 capacity in the Marriott Center versus 10,270 in the Spectrum in Logan...there's no comparison. And that's why teams HATE to come to Provo!

  • Gutter speak
    Feb. 25, 2010 4:47 p.m.

If the standard of excellence of crowd behavior is the gutter speak coming out of the Aggie student section, the Aggies are welcome to keep it in the Spectrum.

I'll take winning anyday, and being able to take my kids to a basketball game without having to worry about an entire student section shouting coordinated obscenities.

The noise coming from the Aggie student section in the ESA last year was impressive.

The content was an embarrassment for a Utah school.

  • Athletic
    Feb. 25, 2010 4:55 p.m.

Way too many ignorant posts on how Un-Athletic BYU is. Really? What are you trying to say? Too many white dudes? Give me a break.

Have you watched them play? I think the majority of the posts are from people who either are completely clueless, or have never watched BYU play this year.

Lets see BYU is on the top of the MWC stats in almost everything like shooting, 3-pt shooting, assists etc.

Now lets look at the stats most experts recognize as the 'athletic' stats. BYU is #1 in Steals, #3 in Defense, #3 in offensive rebounding (#1 in defensive rebounds), #3 in blocked shots. Hmmmm

Individuals. Emery #1 in steals, JT #2, Hartsock is #2 in blocks. Have you seen them play... they look pretty athletic to me. Speed... have you seen Lloyd Jr play? Looks slow to me. LOL. Have you seen Davies or Abouo play? You make it sound like BYU has a bunch of slow white dudes camping out on the 3 pt line. Not the case.

Kind of funny when you look at the most minutes played and there is NOT ONE BYU player in the Top 10.

    Feb. 25, 2010 6:04 p.m.

You're really cheering against the team that gave you your only quality win?

It probably won't make any difference, since that Aggies pretty much have to win the WAC tourney to get an invite to the Big Dance anyway.

While the Cougars, that team the Aggies snuck past waaaay back in December in the Spectrum, are already a lock of the NCAA tournament.

  • Athletic2
    Feb. 25, 2010 6:44 p.m.

I couldn't agree more with the post from "Athletic" at 4:55 pm. People need to define athletic. Here are dictionary definitions:
    1. physically active and strong; good at athletics or sports: an athletic child.
    2. of, like, or befitting an athlete.
    3. of or pertaining to athletes; involving the use of physical skills or capabilities, as strength, agility, or stamina: athletic sports; athletic training.
    4. for athletics: an athletic field.
    5. Psychology. (of a physical type) having a sturdy build or well-proportioned body structure.Compare asthenic (def. 2), pyknic (def. 1).

Which of the above definitions does not apply to BYU players? They are certainly skilled at playing basketball, which is what counts. Perhaps people are referring to definition #5, which boils down to how they look. Who cares about how they look, it is how they play that counts. Greatest player that I ever personally saw play was Jerry West. If you saw him on the street you would not say that he looked like a great athlete... but, what a player!!!

  • Aggies4Life
    Feb. 25, 2010 8:08 p.m.

We whipped you ladies at the spectrum. You can't beat a quality team like Utah State. I was at that game, it was loud. It was louder than you 22,000 fans singing pop corn popping on the nacho tree last night. The aggies are the pride of the state. BYU fans just can't stand being second fiddle to a smaller school that is from the WAC. Oh year, next year you are going down against us in football too. Aggies RULE!!!

  • OVERALL athleticism
    Feb. 25, 2010 10:02 p.m.

#3- involving the use of physical SKILLS or CAPABILITIES, as strength, AGILITY, or stamina. I think you well-know where BYU lacks in athleticism. To say that BYU is more athletic than New Mexico is foolish. They definitely are faster, more agile, and explosive. They just can't shoot the rock.

  • Comparison
    Feb. 25, 2010 10:05 p.m.

Here's an example: who's more athletic Ronnie Brewer or Kyle Korver? This is a good analogy for New Mexico and BYU. Brewer- extremely athletic, can't shoot the ball. Korver- pure shooter, athletic in his own sphere but you would never say that he is more athletic than Brewer.

    Bob in Boise: Regarding Haws outsiding shooting;

I have mentioned the huge dropoff of Haws' outside shooting a couple of times now. He missed 7 or 8 two games ago and was 0 for 6 outside shots against SDSU. Good thing he has made some layups and free throws.

Haws will need to hit some shots in the upcoming tournaments for BYU to get successful.

  • Perfect Examples
    Feb. 26, 2010 10:12 a.m.

We've got two perfect examples of annoying Aggie and Ute fans. Aggies4Life seems to have convinced himself USU is the best team in the state because his team beat BYU on an off night at the Spectrum. Nevermind RPI, Rankings, Records, or the fact that you lost to a sub .500 Utah team that BYU beat, you've convinced yourself of your own superiority and now you're so dilusional you are predicting a win in football. Aggies are just good enough this year to be annoying, but still largely irrelevant on the Utah sports scene and now you're trying to discount your ONLY quality victory this season by bashing BYU.

Ute fans pulling for Lobos is just a typical Ute hater. Nothing to cheer for, just against.

As difficult as it is sometimes with annoying fans like these, I actually cheer for all Utah teams including both USU and Utah, but I know ya'll are too insecure to do the same and I really don't care if you cheer against BYU. We're used to dealing with your sorry inferiority complexes, it's just funny you can't see it.

Dude, where have you been the last thirty years? All Ute fans already DO root for NM, or any other team that plays BYU, so you are preaching to the choir my friend. Nothing you say is going to influence the outcome of the game unless there were hundreds of ute fans pathetic enough to actually buy tickets to the game just to root against BYU. Possible, but not likely.

Haws does so much more for this team than score even though he is averaging almost 12 pts a game and is the #1 FT shooter in the Conference. Over the past three games,Haws is 9/27 and 18-18 from the line scoring 36 pts, 12 pts a game avg with 15 rebounds, 8 assists 3 steals.

Every's numbers are 15/24 and 9/13 from the line scoring 43 pts, 14 pts a game avg with 16 rebounds, 6 assists and 7 steals.

Even though his shooting has been offf a bit, Haws is still shooting .509 from the field, 116/228 while Emery is 117/240 for .488.

Emery is averaging 12.4 through 29 games, Haws 11.7.

Off night, I like the numbers that we get from both Haws and Emery. Coaches love consistency!
