I feel sorry for all fans who saw this game. 19 at halftime Utes? You were playing Air Force. And by the way, holding them to 19 is not nearly as impressive as being held to 19 yourself is embarrassing.

nothing but coog fans posting on yet another Utah article.

Keep talking please - it will just make it even better when we beat you next week.

You should all probably stop talking trash at this point in the season - it's getting very close to the time that your team completely falls appart and leaves all you to come up with excuses of why you can't get past the first round yet again.

It's true the Utes aren't that great this year but they still have better wins than the mighty coogs.

    Can't wait for the fall.

    Go Utes!!!

I am not a big supporter of the cougar race as I am a bobcat and we fight over the terrain for food and survival. But I despise Utes even more for they try hunt us as food. For this they shall be slain by our clan and the cougars shall join us in this battle!!!

  • Cal Ute Fan
    Feb. 24, 2010 11:46 p.m.

I thought one of the top priorities was defense. This season is gone, but I saw Air Force take two of the most open drives ever witnessed in major college basketball. Wide open and totally uncontested drives should not occur this late in the season against a team that is average at best.

  • Funny!....
    Feb. 25, 2010 12:48 a.m.

Cougars have a good year and everyone is talking smack!! Isn't this the same program that is 11-29 in NCAA Tournament games? Isn't this the program that doesn't have a single ex-cougar on an NBA roster? Isn't this the cougar program that has never played in a final four, one elite eight and two sweet sixteen games all time?

Hahahahahaha keep on talking your smack! Can you say one-and-done?!!!! Ignorant and arrogant simultaneously? Isn't that a rather odd combination? Only in the bubble??

Good road win Utes. Keep improving. Two more tune up wins then the MWC Tournament.

    Go UTES!!

  • RE: Cal Ute Fan
    Feb. 25, 2010 12:57 a.m.

Um... have you ever thought that those drives are a result of Air Force's offense? The Utes' top priority IS defense. Utah actually is quite the defensive team this season. The Utes are leading the conference in blocked shots and in three-point shooting defense. The Utes also shot 50 percent from the field against the Falcons while holding Air Force to their lowest point total of the season.

Come on and give me a break!!!!

The yewts didn't put us through the grinder!!! If we would have rebounded a couple more offensive boards, we would have won!

And don't forget the miss call by the refs in the 3rd quarter that would have given us the lead and maintained our momentum.

Freshman Marsha Hendrickson did okay, but it was the other point guard that did us in!!!!
The yewts are going to be beaten badly at BYU.

    GO FALCONS........you're the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, yeah, funny thing, but Utah has won an NCAA national basketball chapionship. True story. Look it up!

And, Utah appeared in the sweet 16 in 2005.

Let's see, when was the last time any other team from Utah was in the Sweet 16...?

  • Re: Funniest
    Feb. 25, 2010 7:54 a.m.

Utah has won a National Championship in basketball and been to four Final Fours, neither of which your precious Coogs can say.

1993....Keep saying that year. It has been 17 years since you have even tasted what it feels like to play on Saturday in the tournament.

Andre Miller won as many tournament games in his four years as BYU has in their lifetime.

Hey all you Utes. Thanks again for the history lesson. I am a slow learner but I am starting to get the picture. Let me review.

You used to be good in basketball. You used to have a good coach. You have had 2 good seasons in football. You beat BYU 1/2 the time in football for a few years. You dominated the 1800s and early 1900s in football. Congrats on your decent, not necessarily recent, history.

  • LaVar the Utah Cat
    Feb. 25, 2010 8:48 a.m.

Once again, why is Tavita playing major minutes for the Utes? Zero points against AF (nearly two points under his average); poor defense in this game with four fouls. Hines was vastly superior in this game to Tavita. Even the tv announcers were saying, don't bother guarding Tavita; he's not a threat, guard the other four. If Utah's coaches, continue to play Tavita, then they will continue to lose many games. It is comparable to playing 4 against 5 when you start Tavita.

  • Good Game Runnin Utes!
    Feb. 25, 2010 8:57 a.m.

Keep up the momentum and stick it to the Pokes! I seriously think that they can make a tournament run and suprise people in Vegas.

Why are kewgie fans on here? Did you enjoy reading about the Utes? Losers!

    Feb. 25, 2010 9:19 a.m.

LaVar the Utah Cat is the MAN! If he sees it, I KNOW the coaching staff sees it! Tavita, on a good day, CANNOT out-guard Hines! Hines IS a true point AND shooting guard, but NO ONE KNOWS IT BECAUSE AGAIN, THEY KEEP HIM BENCHED! I would bet my life savings on it that if they let him loose, they would NEVER bench him AGAIN! I hope like heck, he gets out of there and go somewhere where his skills are acknowledged and appreciated. He had 8 pts in the short amount of time he played and there were several players that didn't get any pts and played almost the entire game! Even a AFA fan said Henderson did ok, but it was ther OTHER guard that wore them out...that, my friend, was HINES in case you didn't know! And to make it worse, no one mentioned his contributions to the game. It is ALWAYS a Henderson affair, even when he plays like crap! WOW! Instead of Go Utes, I gotta say, Go Figure on this one!

Utah is starting to build momentum. I can see them as a dark horse in the MWC tournament (especially since they've proven they can beat UNLV in Vegas). Keep up the Ws, and we'll see you next week.

  • Little Dance
    Feb. 25, 2010 9:42 a.m.

Utah won the NCAA championship so long ago that the NCAA tournament was't even the most prestigious tournament.

Like the NIT is today, in 1944, the NCAA tournament was the little brother to the NIT.

In other words, the LITTLE DANCE.

Utah's own actions prove this. The Utes turned down their initial invitation to the "little dance" in order accept their invitation to the BIG DANCE of the day, the NIT.

Utah got LOST in the opening round of the NIT to Kentucky.

A little fact that Utah fans conveniently choose to ignore when reciting their basketball "history".

Re: Anonymous @8:21... your fellow fans are the ones that needed the lesson. If you morons are going to post erroneous information you are going to be corrected. At least the Utes have a history to talk about. What have your lil' kittens done recently... check that... EVER?

Great adjustments at half. Going small was huge as both Washburn and Foster we ineffective against AF's small lineup and constant motion. 2nd half was dominated by the Utes, and the important thing is they won. Let's finish up the last 3 with wins and have some good momentum as a very dangerous team in the tourney.

As always, a Boylen believer and proud of it.

    Go Utes.

First off, Why do Kewg trolls constantly complain about how insufferable Ute fans are — and then post hate filled comment on UTE ARTICLES?

    Because BYU= Hypocrites.

Second, Let’s review Kewg history — shall we.

    BASKETBALL

1)Have not won a NCAA tournament game in nearly 20 years.
2)Has ZERO players in the NBA

    FOOTBALL
1)Has never reached a BCS bowl game- 4 other non BCS teams have reached this goal within the last 6 years
2)Has gone 3-8 against the Utes.
3)Will remain in a Mid major conference as rivals Utah and TCU will move into a BCS conference

  • Boylen
    Feb. 25, 2010 10:35 a.m.

    This is the Utes best lineup;

    Brown
    Washburn
    Henderson
    Hines
    Watkins

But you will never see it because Boylen loves Foster (no heart) Tavita (no talent) and Drca (no brains).

To the fans that think BYU's two NIT championships were at a time where the NIT was more prestigious that the NCAA championship, think again! The NCAA has always awarded the winner of the NCAA Tournament as the National Champions.

1966 NCAA Final Four: Texas Western(UTEP), Kentucky, Duke, Utah. UTEP beat Kentucky for the National Championship (please refer to movie: Glory Road). Jerry Chambers of Utah was Final Four MVP.

1966 NIT Championship: BYU beat NYU (no movie. Oh, NYU stands for New York University).

1951 NCAA Championship: Kentucky over Kansas State

1951 NIT Championship: BYU over Dayton (FYI, Kansas State beat BYU in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament so BYU played in the NIT and won it).

1947 NIT Championship: Utah over Kentucky

FYI, Utah doesn't claim to be National Champions in 1947 because the NCAA clearly recognizes the NCAA Tournament winner as the National Champions.

National Championships: Utah 1, BYU 0

NIT Championships: BYU 2, Utah 1

Yes Cougar fan I’ve seen your stats many many times. But again, your missing the point -I’m talking NATIONAL significance. Really now, does anyone outside of the bubble know (or care) that BYU was ranked and average of #16 over the past 5 years? But does the NATION know about Boise State? How about TCU? And of course Utah? The answer is simple, YES.

What do all three of these teams have in common? They performed BIG when it counted. Go ahead and feel good about being “good”. But get back to me when your team has something that sports fans around the nation are slightly interested in.

There are dozens of “good” little programs all around the nation that chest pump the same way but it only goes so far.

Sorry Utah fan, a couple of great seasons in your entire history does not a program make.

As much as Utah fans may like to believe otherwise, BYU is the MWC kingpin around the country.

30 years of being a perennial Top 25 team AND winning a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP carries ALOT more cachet than a couple of flash-in-the-pan seasons, no matter how good they were.

Even in their best decade ever, with BYU having it's worst stretch of football in the last 50 years, Utah still couldn't match BYU in Top 25 finishes.

    1 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP > 2 BCS wins

    17 Top 25 Finishes > 5 1/2 Top 25 Finishes

You can disagree all you want, but that's just the way it is.

Get back to us when Utah manages more Top 25 finishes in a decade than BYU!

"The NCAA has always awarded the winner of the NCAA Tournament as the National Champions."

You don't have a clue what you're talking about.

In 1944, the NCAA tournament was the new kid on the block; little brother to the NIT, the most prestigious tournament of the time.

If that wasn't the case, please explain why Utah turned down their initial NCAA invitation to play in the NIT.

It was simply a freak series of events that Utah even played in the 1944 NCAA tournament.

You know that; as does anybody who has studied the history of college basketball in 1944.

Please stop lying about Utah winning a national championship in 1944.

    It simply isn't so.

    how Utah fans dismiss BYU's 1984 National Championship and 1996 Cotton Bowl win as too far in the past to be relevant;

yet their 1998 NCAA finals run and 1944 NCAA tournament championship are relevant.

What about Utah's 1947 NIT championship?

    Or BYU's 1951 and 1966 NIT championships?

    Can you say "HYPOCRITS"!

Tell me Utah fans, what exactly has Utah done since 1998 to make some real noise that fans outside the Utah bubble would recognize.

What exactly is Utah's statute of limitations on what time frame is and isn't relevant?

    5 years
    10 years
    20 years

that's convenient to leave off the Fiesta Bowl year.

That is typical byu behavior - look at history with your blue coog glasses on. Only look at what makes you look the best. Much like how your school views the complete football records between the two schools - not counting the brigham young academy days in football because they lost almost all of them yet counting that record in basketball because they had a better outcome.

Anyway you look at it the Ute's have accomplished more in both football and basketball than your beloved coogs.

Explain and rationalize away until you feel better - but we all know the truth.

Congratulations on your recent number of NCAA tournament appearences. That is huge! Except when you lose all of them!!!

Yes Utah was a 5th seed last year and they got beat in the 1st round. That only proves they were better than the coogs last year.

I know byu likes to blame all of their NCAA tournament losses on their seed - I can't wait to hear the excuse this year.

Oh yeah good job on the win last night Utes.

    Go Utes!!!

than Utah fans making the cut off date 2004

    or the BCS era

or since Utah developed a pulse in football again in 1992,

or let's just "conveniently" forget the 1970's and 1980's because Utah football didn't exist then,

or let's talk about the overall series record, but "conveniently" ignore the fact that Utah did absolutely NOTHING on a national scale during those leather helmet football days when the Utes were busy beating up on a BYU team that was little more than a club team

btw, BYA was 3-2 versus Utah in the 1890's

Utah, CONVENIENTLY, includes a spring scrimmage as a real game, just to even the record

even in the 1890's, football was a fall sport

and no, BYU doesn't leave out the BYA days because the Cougars lost most of their games

BYU omits the BYA days because BYU didn't even have a football team from the late 1890's until 1922

If you're going to spout off, at least no what you're talking about and use real facts instead of pulling them out of your backside.

By all means look at the whole record. Besides the Lavell days, it's petty lopsided. Even with the coog dominance in the 70's and 80's Utah still holds a sizeable lead on you.

You are the perfect why fan - make excuse after excuse until all the bad goes away.

Whatever!! I never made the claim that Utah did anything on the national level in the begining - either did your school. I was simply talking about the rivalry between the U and the y.

Yeah - it was just a "club sport" that should make you feel better.

Your jealousy is all too evident in your posts - just admit you would trade all your Vegas bowl appearences in heart beat for 1 BCS win - to claim anything otherwise is a joke.

    Go Utes!!!

  • no jealousy
    Feb. 25, 2010 6:37 p.m.

BYU has been a nationally recognized football program for over 30 years.

--Over a dozen National individual awards, including the Heisman Trophy

    --a National Championship

    --a perenniel Top 25 team

    --a perenniel WAC/MWC champion

Utah has a couple of BCS wins, that's it

    --no National Championship

    --no National individual awards, ever

--only a handful of Top 25 finishes and conference championships

Even if BYU goes one-and-done in the Tournament (which they won't), one-and-done is still a heck of a lot better than none-and-done.

1 Football National Championship > any number of BCS Bowl games that are not for the NC.

Something yoot fans don't seem to get (or refuse to acknowledge): A BCS bowl game that is not for the NC is just another bowl game except with a bigger payout.

Stop by and see our football National Championship trophy some time, yoot fans. It's real shiney.

  • Jealous Coogs!!
    Feb. 26, 2010 12:30 a.m.

Keep up your ridiculous smack talk about your national championship!! You beat the 6th place team from a 10 team conference in a pre-new year's bowl game with $500,000 payday! The big bowls paid teams over 10 times that amount (USC and Ohio State each received $5,800,000 from the 1985 Rose Bowl).

What that means is FIVE other teams from the Big 10 were invited to BETTER bowl games with higher paydays! The big boys play in January and the big paydays are ALL in January.

Enjoy bragging about your huge win over 6th place, 6-6 Michigan during a season that byu won all it's games against teams that didn't finish in the final poll.

Being invited to a $17,000,000 per team BCS game to play against the big boys twice in the past six years, finishing in the top 5 each time is definately a greater honor.

Having to award BYU the NC for the 1984 season after they took the lead with 1:23 left in the game against a 6-5 unranked team was the joke of college football. Congratulations on your NCAA NC "gift"!!

"You don't have a clue what you're talking about.

In 1944, the NCAA tournament was the new kid on the block; little brother to the NIT, the most prestigious tournament of the time."

FYI, NIT started in 1938 and NCAA Tournament in 1939. The NIT champion for 1938 and 1939 were considered the national champions.

Early on the tournaments were played at different times allowing teams to participate in both. Utah did in 1944, BYU did in 1951.

The NIT Champion and the NCAA Champion played each other three times, 1943, 1944 (Utah), and 1945 with the NCAA Champion winning each time. It would be hard to say that Utah wasn't the national champion in 1944 based on this fact!

BYU lost in the NCAA Tournament in 1951 then played in and won the NIT. #1 Kentucky beat #4 Kansas State in the NCAA Tournament championship game. Note, Kansas State is the team that defeated BYU. Again, the recognized 1951 NCAA National Champion is Kentucky, winner of the NCAA Tournament.

    I hope this helps.

  • 1944
    Feb. 26, 2010 9:08 a.m.

The 1944 NCAA/NIT champions matchup was a fund-raising exhibition game.

The fact that Utah was beaten soundly in the opening round of the NIT by Kentucky (46-38), which then lost to St. Johns (48-45), which then beat DePaul (47-39) to win the NIT, makes moot the fact that Utah later won an EXHIBITION game against St. Johns.

  • current superiority
    Feb. 26, 2010 9:25 a.m.

As an unbiased objective observer who recently moved to Salt Lake City from Iowa and is not a fan of either BYU or Utah (go Hawkeyes!), I would say to the fans posting to this article that the most common way to determine which program is "superior" is to look at the most recent seasons.

BYU had a better season in football last year and beat Utah in the rivalry game. BYU is also doing much better in basketball this season than Utah and beat them once already. Therefore, both of BYU's programs are currently superior to those of Utah.

None of the ancient history being quoted and posted means much at this time with the exception of very notable events like BYU's national championship in football and their Heisman win for Ty Detmer. Believe me, other schools and their fans outside of Utah are very much aware of these two BYU accomplishments.

Re: No comparison, jealous yoots... seriously? So you're one of those guys that talks a lot but never played the game? Because anyone that knows anything about football would never say that a so-called NC is greater than two BCS wins. That's just flat out brainless. Sorry lil' fella but 2 BCS wins in the current system is far greater than one so-called NC (even national pundits question the validity of that game) in the old system. End of story.

  • Re: current superiority
    Feb. 26, 2010 1:47 p.m.

Despite the inability of jealous, juvenile Utah fans to accept the truth, your assessment is spot on.

Utah does get some credit for winning a couple of BCS games, but, in that respect, Boise State receives far more attention for it's BCS wins, especially the Oklahoma win.

From an historical perspective, nothing speaks more to the quality of a college football program than:

    Winning a National Championship

    and

    Winning a Heisman Trophy

playing in a BCS game is small potatoes by comparison

Yes we can tell that you know what you're talking about and you must have been quite a player yourself...NOT on both points. Talk about being brainless AND clueless, you win the big prize there, you little woman. Anyone who knows anything at all about sports knows that a National Championship is worth a heck of a lot more than any post-season game that is NOT for a championship. But why do we even bother trying to explain these simple and obvious facts to utah fans who probably have trouble tying their own shoes, let alone getting them on the right feet? Two BCS wins in the current system that are not for the NC mean only as much as any other bowl game that also did not decide the NC. End of story.

Oh wow ute4life, you sound like one of the yoot fans who likes to claim that utah's win over Alabama was good enough to make you guys national champs. Right? Yeah I though so. U don't even understand how the system works, both u and Whitt voting yourselves #1. HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Losers!
