  • Boylen's excuses
    Feb. 1, 2010 7:54 p.m.

The excuses to justify a loss to CSU are already in the works. But the utes won't lose much firepower from missing gunner Henderson (his 5 of 15 performance last Saturday was worthy of Tavernari before the Cougar senior benched himself). Henderson is a selfish player, evidenced by his punch and his on-court play.

  • No big deal
    Feb. 1, 2010 8:00 p.m.

Let him play. It was a sissy slap and then a dive. And on top of that, it won't matter if he plays or not. He plays no defense and on offense he hangs out in the corner for threes. He is completely one-dimensional--and irrelevant.

Boylen needs to play Tillie and Foster together more and let them create for each other on offense.

    Feb. 1, 2010 8:38 p.m.

He has two more 3pt makes this season than Fredette. Fredette has made 46 of 96 from beyond the 3pt line while Henderson has made 48 of 148. The kid is shooting less than 33 percent. Tavernari has had a terrible year and is at 37 percent. I think it is high time somebody else got a look at Henderson's spot. He is too inconsistent to be playing the kind of minutes he gets. Haws shoots 55 percent from beyond the line. Wake up Boylen. No wonder we are at .500.

  • Oh, ya...
    Feb. 1, 2010 8:39 p.m.

Because we've never heard excuses from the Y before because of injury.......ever.

  • swimbiff
    Feb. 1, 2010 8:55 p.m.

Watch the tape. The kid maliciously threw an elbow. He should be gone for a whole lot more than one game

  • Starting Lineup
    Feb. 1, 2010 9:17 p.m.

"Boylen... said he wasn't sure of his entire starting lineup yet."

uuuumm; the season's 2/3's over; when do you think we might decide on a starting line up?

  • mike
    Feb. 1, 2010 9:43 p.m.

Let's be serious Cougar fans, the one game suspension is fair, it was a poor decision but Emery wasn't hurt, a one game suspension is fair, also he is a freshman and still has to play 3 more games at the Marriott Center, where we will boo him every time he touches the ball.

  • re: swimdork
    Feb. 1, 2010 11:20 p.m.

I did watch the tape.... as I'm sure everyone else did too. Strange how you missed it though - he didn't hit him with his elbow he caught him with the back of his hand - you have to watch some news channels to see it because of course the Mtn network only had one angle.

I'm just glad Emery didn't suffer any whiplash from hitting the ground so fast.

The Coach immediately addressed the situation and they delt with Henderson the way the rules clearly stated.

Please notice the lack of a media relations department in all of this. Coach Boylen took responsibility for the situation and didn't make one excuse for it. He said that he will be punished and hopefully learn from this. That is something that the beloved y could learn a lot from.

    Go Utes!!!

  • RE: swimbiff
    Feb. 1, 2010 11:35 p.m.

Maliciously? you have got to be kidding me. It was no more than a slap and a great flop. It was very uncalled for and not neccessary for a freshman. But lets not over exagerate here.

  • Where are the whiners?
    Feb. 1, 2010 11:37 p.m.

So a guy that says that an organization is classless (one players opinion) gets excoriated in the press and by relentless fans.....

and on the other hand, a guy that shows he is classless (one players actions) gets a slap on the wrist, hardly any media attention and not much whining by opposing fans, it is swept under the rug, no big deal because he is not in the spotlight.

    Hypocrisy at its best.

Its 3 days later and this is over....not much attention. On the other hand, dedicated fans will continue to buy Honk for Max bumper stickers til the end of time.

Wha, wha, wha....its not the same, you say? Its sports. Athletes act in the moment when the adreneline is pumping, right? Have we heard an apology by Henderson yet? You expected it from Hall and then didnt accept his apology when it came.

Why are not all athletes held to the same standard? Be it a Hall or a Henderson? Dont actions speak louder than words?

    Hypocrisy at its best.

  • flop my eye
    Feb. 1, 2010 11:52 p.m.

NOBODY, and I mean, NOBODY, could have possibily reacted quickly enough to a sucker punch to first see it and then deviously decide to flop just to make it look worse than it was.

Utah fans live in this fantasy world where evil Cougars are continuously cooking up schemes just to make the Utes look bad.

Show a little backbone Utes and just admit that Henderson popped Emery in the nose hard enough to knock him to the floor.

  • re: flop my eye
    Feb. 2, 2010 12:05 a.m.

Maybe you should watch your cougars a little closer...they have a reputation of flopping all over! It is a requirement for any cougar to know how to flop before he can be on the team and then many hours are spent on the development of the BYU FLOP!

  • Boylen's a joke
    Feb. 2, 2010 12:24 a.m.

I love how Boylen interprets the NCAA rules. Even though the rule book clearly states that using basically any part of one's body to create malicious contact is defined as a fight, Boylen doesn't call what Henderson did a fight. Then what was it coach? That's like saying "I wouldn't call taking three steps while holding the basketball travelling." This guy's a joke. And he didn't even encourage his player to apologize. Nice role model the yewts have hired.

  • @flop my eye
    Feb. 2, 2010 1:55 a.m.

someone needs to donate you an eye to see reality. "Popped him hard enough to send him to the floor" (okay). Emery gave a better than Vlade Divac performance. Henderson pinky flipped him. Emery Jackson is not that wimpy (or maybe he is). Stand up for golly darn cougar sakes.

  • FLOP?!
    Feb. 2, 2010 6:19 a.m.

Are Utes fans really justifying the Henderson hit because of the "BYU FLOP"? Hahahhaa! Maybe there should be more punching and swinging because BYU deserves it! The only classless Ute fan is the one justifying this behavior.

  • Calling a ute is
    Feb. 2, 2010 7:36 a.m.

An assumption that a ute is capable of having any class at all which they have shown time and time again they don't! A coach that justifies the committed offense and a player that offers no apology for "being caught in the heat of the moment", Utes you are not capable of even being classless, you simply are a Ute, errr
I mean LOSER-see your teams record for proof, see your team's actions for more proof, see your coach's actions for even more proof, shall I go on?

  • It takes two to tango!
    Feb. 2, 2010 7:40 a.m.

Hmm, what caused Henderson to react as he did. What could Emery have said prior to the reaction? We'll most likely never know. To 'where are the whiners', remember it wasn't done at a news conference following an explosive game! Let this type of behavior end and hope that the athletics show more self control so that we can all enjoy a good game and remember it for the outstanding plays.

  • What if?
    Feb. 2, 2010 7:51 a.m.

Imagine the outcry from the Utes if it had been a BYU player who slapped, slugged or punched (you define it) a Ute player! What words would we hear about BYU from Utes? Hypocrites, self righteous, throw the bum out for life, etc. As it is, what's the big deal, what do you expect from Utes who throw beer into opposing players faces, threaten their families and make it necessary for a police escort of opposing players families out of RES. Classless? If the shoe fits......

  • Thanks Max
    Feb. 2, 2010 7:52 a.m.

I've always felt the same too.

  • Dear Ute Fans
    Feb. 2, 2010 7:53 a.m.

Say what you want, all we have to say is: scoreboard.

    Conversation's over. You lose, again.

  • Typical Ute
    Feb. 2, 2010 8:01 a.m.

    2000-2001 "Let's all show respect"

2002-2005 "We hate BYU. They're all self righteous losers"

    2006-2007 "Let's all show respect"

2008 "We hate BYU. They're all self righteous losers"

    2009 "Let's all show respect"

Utes - you can stop the holier than thou attitude. We dont like you either. Stop pretending to be civilized fans during the years you lose

  • It's too bad...
    Feb. 2, 2010 8:09 a.m.

It's too bad that sportsmanship does not take a higher precedent in sports. Regardless of the situation when one loses his temper he loses sportsmanship. There should be stiffer penalties for lack of sportsmanship, and coaches should support in whole, not make excuses and kind of support suspensions. Sportsmanship should be required at each institution. Tempers that are not in check should be on the bench - by the coach not the league.

  • Good Kid
    Feb. 2, 2010 8:14 a.m.

This was a one time occurrence by a freshman. It's not like he's been suspended before... well at least not for six games in high school anyway.

  • Unbelievable
    Feb. 2, 2010 8:33 a.m.

You'd have thought the world was coming to an end caused by a flood of tears after Max hurt everyone's feelings, and then this guy does something violent(yes a girly slap is still violent)and it's not big deal?

  • No
    Feb. 2, 2010 8:41 a.m.

It wasn't fighting. It was a cheap shot! He would get pounded in a fight!

  • LaVar the Utah Cat
    Feb. 2, 2010 8:57 a.m.

Boylen and MWC have taken the appropriate actions to a unfortunate, ill-considered action on Henderson's part. Does anyone remember the penalty for Miles deliberately kicking Bogut? I don't remember anything other than a simple foul being called.

  • Emery
    Feb. 2, 2010 8:57 a.m.

a few minutes earlier had a similar play involving Henderson trying to save a ball inbounds. Emery went over and helped Henderson up.

On the play involving the elbow or fist, Emery was talking to the referee and not Henderson. Henderson hit Emery when he wasn't looking and after the ref had turned away.

Henderson is psycho and has a short fuse. He was suspended from his high school team last season for part of the year.

  • U of U
    Feb. 2, 2010 8:58 a.m.

The U. of U. is a weird place! What to they actually teach up there? Judging from the way their fans behave, not much!

  • One game suspension
    Feb. 2, 2010 9:07 a.m.

is appropriate. It was a heat of the moment reaction. Shouldn't have happened but did. Let's not brand this young man for life. I think he is going to be a pretty good player for the next 3 years at Utah. Let's quit making a issue and move on.

  • Re ; Lavar
    Feb. 2, 2010 9:20 a.m.

You guys can't seem to get your stories straight! First you alledge it was one BYU player who supposedly kicked Bogut, then it is another and now it was Miles? Who was it really who kicked him? Or is it all just a made up deal by you? I think the later. Yes, there was a foul called, but kicking? naw!

  • Bear
    Feb. 2, 2010 9:42 a.m.

Wow, what a tempest in a teapot this is. I am amazed at the lingering interest Cougar fans have in the slap/tap/slug and resulting flop/fall/death spiral to the floor. What interests me is the lectures we U fans got following the Max Hall incident on our need to just move on and and quit persevering over it. Now, they just can't seem to get enough with the U, our coach and player. All the while, the Y actually does seem to have a pretty good team with a better than normal chance to get into the NCAA tourney and win a game or two. Their own fans have lost sight of enjoying the ride. Take it from a U fan, going long into the tourney - even to the championship game - is a great experience. Try and set a "championship" tone and not worry over something as insignificant as the slap/tap/slug. You are dimishing your own teams record and toughness.

  • Cougar Fan
    Feb. 2, 2010 9:49 a.m.

The rules are obviously tighter than they used to be.

The Utes will pull together and beat CSU. It looks like they've figured out how to use Watkins. He could have a real big game against the Rams.

These things can galvanize teams. Us against the world. The Utes could go on a nice little run.

  • BYU haters crack me up
    Feb. 2, 2010 10:15 a.m.

I have been dealing with it as far back as 1985 when I was criticized and ridiculed for being a BYU fan by my Deacon's Quorum advisor, Bishop, Scoutmaster, and peers. That's what one would expect living under the shadow of the U on the east bench. Keep it coming! It still makes no sense to me.

You know that twisted up bitter face expression you can picture on Henderson's face? Yeah, that was a flashback reminder of bitter Ute fan from my childhood.

  • Roberto
    Feb. 2, 2010 10:23 a.m.

We BYU fans can be a bunch of whiners sometimes and the utes do look down their noses at everyone. I'm surprised there isnt more said about the cheep shot. It was a cheep shot and a oscar worthy acting proformanct from Jackson. The coverage from Maxes words and Hendersons cheep shot was unfair and unbalanced (a little fox news lingo there) Almost gives Maxes statement Credability. If the roles were reversed the haters would have crawled out from under their rocks all up and down the Wasach front.

  • Bamboozled
    Feb. 2, 2010 10:38 a.m.

Wow! You mean that Boylen is actually considering PT for Cyphers and Hines??!! Not those two STAR players who have warmed the bench for most of the season...why use them now?!! Could it be that you NEED them like you have all season long??!

And as for Henderson, excuses and more excuses for his tantrums...just as one comment read: He's inconsistent and can't guard. As far as I can see, he can only shoot 3's from the same position and that is ALL he's got!

  • Rick from Sheboygan
    Feb. 2, 2010 10:39 a.m.

The Marshall Henderson "backhand heard round the world" to Emery, still trails the Nate Cooper punch on Van Horn and the Chris Miles kick to Bogut's backside.

  • Anonymous
    Feb. 2, 2010 10:42 a.m.

Araujo was never suspended for punching and attempting to punch Ute players with his fist. The BYU center (can't remember his name because it was forgettable) kicked Bogut in the back while he was sitting on the floor. No suspension. This backhanded slap, to get Emery's hand off of his arm, was not harmful and foul, ejection and 1 game is more than enough punishment.

  • Utah Ute Fan
    Feb. 2, 2010 11:07 a.m.

Lots of Cougar fans bringing up Max Hall's comments and Cougar fans saying things like "Max Hall was right".

Then the Cougar fans criticize Ute fans for not accepting Hall's apology and dragging his comments on and on.

    Pretty funny double standard.

  • take a good look
    Feb. 2, 2010 11:09 a.m.

I will agree that it was an immature reaction on Hendersons part but he still needs to keep his emotions under control to play at this level. And maybe Emery's reaction seemed a bit much to those of us watching on TV but did you happen to notice that Emery kept swiping at his eyes. Havent you ever been caught in the eye with something or hit on the nose and your eyes sting , hurt whatever and yes you have a far bigger reaction than if it had just hit his cheek. So maybe it wasnt as big of a flop as all the Ute fans are saying. None of us was on the recieving end and even a fingernail can cause a reaction if it hits your eye. Im just saying!!

Not really, but thanks for playing.

    Feb. 2, 2010 11:25 a.m.

Here's hoping that Cyphers gets some real minutes instaed of Jace Tavita who cannot hit the side of a barn with a basketball.

How did he get a scholarship anyway and why does Boylen insist on playing him?

  • school time people....
    Feb. 2, 2010 11:43 a.m.

FIST = closed hand, fingers curled inward to palm.

SO, slap = open hand, finger extended, making contact to another person or thing.

AND, punch = fist (closed hand, fingers curled into palm), making contact to another person or thing.

CONCLUSION, Henderson + punch (with fist) = one game violation.

Quit calling it a slap, the tape is clear it was a closed handed fist.

Class is now over, but classless-ness will go on and on and on. Max was only calling a spade a spade, and grandma was right when she said actions speak LOUDER than words!!!

I think Araujo and Henderson should have a cage match.

  • Respect for Boylen
    Feb. 2, 2010 12:11 p.m.

I am a Cougar fan who gets tired of all the back and forth bashing between the two schools. I have never been a huge fan of Boylen but after watching how he handled this whole situation, from the moment it happened, I have to say I have a whole new respect for him. I think the way he interacted with players from both teams immediately after the incident and the way he addressed his comments to the media he is a class act. I think he would be a great coach to play for or to have my son play for.

    Pretty funny double standard

  • No Respect for Boylen
    Feb. 2, 2010 12:22 p.m.

Of course he tried to calm everyone down and not make a big deal of it - it was HIS player slapping the other team because he was sad they were losing.

He wouldn't have had the same comments had a byu player been all slap happy

  • Get over it

  • re: to Utah Ute Fan
    Feb. 2, 2010 1:05 p.m.

Funny you are even on here posting about Utah's class? Remember Max Hall going out of his way to hit Stevenson Sylvester after the play was over because he was upset he was going to lose. Not justifying Henderson, just saying no BYU fan has any right to be on here saying anything about this incident.

  • by the book
    Feb. 2, 2010 1:12 p.m.

It's nice that Boylen went by the book in disciplining Henderson.

Since the book didn't specifiy an apology, Boylen and Henderson weren't required to do that.

Nice work coach and great teaching of your young charge.

Question: 10 years from now, when the Henderson "slap" has long been forgotten by BYU fans, will Utah fans still be talking about Max Hall?

    Answer: GUARANTEED!

what a surprise. i log in and read the comments and it has turned into childish bickering. both sides. you are both immature.

To ute fans: Calling it a flop to justify it is silly. Yes, it was a flop. but that does not justify it.

No wonder Lone Peak retired Emery's jersey, He is the best actor I have ever seen! I mean did Henderson even touch him, let alone throttle him to the ground as emery made it look?! pathetic.

  • Blinded
    Feb. 2, 2010 1:57 p.m.

    "did Henderson even touch him"?

Obviously, Henderson "touched" Jackson hard enough to drop Emery to the floor and draw a flagrant foul and ejection from the officials who had to watch the replay in order to see what had happened because Marshall launched his sucker punch while the officials' backs were turned.

    Feb. 2, 2010 1:59 p.m.

I have read the article and read all the comments. For the record Iam not a UTE or Byu Fan. The matter has been handle and a man suspended for one game for the fight. I can understand that their is a lot of hate between the two teams. The player was suspended for a game, what pently did Max Hall suffer. None that I know of and a half hearted sorry. I would love to see the two teams get along or hope they would alest try if not lets suspend both teams reguardless the sport for 6 months and then try again.

    Feb. 2, 2010 2:06 p.m.

Henderson is a hot head. Fans who have watched him all season aren't surprised that Marshall would eventually lose his cool and do something like this.

Marshall is a Freshman; but, that's just an excuse. Everyone starts out as a Freshman. Very few players have ever thrown a sucker punch.

And, without an apology, I doubt Henderson will learn anything from this other than to disguise his cheap shots better next time.
