FREEDOM FORUM Who knew Bronco Mendenhall was such an offense-minded coach? The former defensive coordinator went on the attack last week in an interview with the Austin American-Statesman. He said BYU “would love to be in the Big 12” and that “I think that would make a lot of sense. In fact, if that was your headline, that would be great.” Here’s another headline that might work: “BYU Proves Independence Not as Awesome as Founding Fathers Believed.”

FUTURE SHOCK

The Jazz have hired Quin Snyder as their head coach, making him just the fifth since the team arrived in Utah.

Said Snyder: “I’m a little nervous, to be honest with you, and I think that’s OK.”

Isn’t he supposed to say that after he’s had a few bad seasons, instead of before?

CASHING IN

The Jazz are offering a one-year lease on a Mercedes-Benz and a pair of season tickets as a contest prize for correctly picking NBA draft picks 1-14 and 23.

With those odds, Rock On thinks the prizewinner should be hired as the team’s assistant general manager.

THE A.K. SOLUTION

The Jazz worked out draft prospect Artem Klimenko last Thursday, presenting the possibility of a second Russian with the initials “A.K.” — the other being former Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko.

They also worked out New Mexico center Alex Kirk.

Clearly the Jazz are missing the marketing boat on A.K.s. Why not just sign Ashton Kutcher already?

CONNECTED

Minnesota Timberwolves president Flip Saunders conducted an exhaustive (or not) search for a head coach before hiring himself.

Sources say he plans to announce his assistant coaches next week at the Saunders family reunion in Duluth.

ROLLING ALONG

The Diesel Technology Forum says Utah is second in the nation in percentage of vehicles that are diesel trucks.

The Beehive State has 119,290 diesel pickups, representing 19.7 percent of the total vehicles.

What it didn’t report is that Karl Malone owns 109,234 of them.

MR. CONGENIALITY

Malone — who actually now lives in Louisiana — was one of the judges at Sunday’s Miss USA Pageant in Baton Rouge.

Sources say all went well until the Mailman threatened to take out the other judges with his elbows if Miss Louisiana didn’t make the final round.

POINT TAKEN

You have to admire USA Soccer coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s candor.

He told The New York Times “we cannot win this World Cup, because we are not at that level yet.”
