All eyes will be on Desert Hills in this year's 3A state tournament. A runner-up two years in a row — including last year when it was a big favorite — Desert Hills is the overwhelming favorite to capture the 3A state championship this year at Southern Utah.

A couple of other 3A programs such as Morgan, North Sanpete and Juan Diego hope to make things difficult for Desert Hills, but even their best game might not be enough against the loaded Thunder.

In order of winning percentage, these are the 16 teams that qualified for the 3A girls state basketball tournament this year:

1. Desert Hills (21-1)

2. Morgan (20-1)

3. North Sanpete (17-3)

4. Juan Diego (17-4)

5. Bear River (15-7)

6. Stansbury (14-8)

7. Hurricane (13-8)

8. Snow Canyon (11-9)

9. Cedar (12-10)

10. Juab (10-10)

11. Carbon/Payson

12. Union (7-13)

13. Richfield (6-14)

14. Tooele (6-15)

15. Park City (5-13)

16. Grantsville (5-16)

Here’s a team-by-team look at all 16 teams in the state tournament, and what to expect:

Bear River Bears (15-7)

Bear River Bears (15-7)

2013-14 schedule

Coach: Van Park

How qualified: Tied for first in Region 11 with 7-1 record and won coin flip to earn No. 1 seed

Playoff opener: vs. Cedar, Friday, 7 p.m.

Best preseason victory: A 52-36 win at Bountiful on Dec. 20.

Most important region victory: A 56-49 win vs. Stansbury on Feb. 6.

#40 Terrell Fridal, Sr. (6.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 2.3 spg)

#3 Tamika Rodriguez, So. (5.8 ppg, 1.6 rpg, 2.6 apg, 3.0 spg)

#5 Jordan Fitting, Jr. (4.9 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.8 spg)

Scoring offense: 49.6 ppg (4th in 3A)

Scoring defense: 43.2 ppg (11th in 3A)

Last state championship: None

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Juan Diego in quarterfinals

Edward’s evaluation: Since losing 3 of 4 during a stretch in January, Bear River has found its groove and ended the season on a six-game winning streak to earn share of Region 11 title. Opens playoffs against quality opponent in Cedar, but if the Bears advance they’ll be a notable underdog against whoever they face the rest of the tournament.

Carbon Dinos (11-12)

2013-14 schedule

Coach: Ted Biano

How qualified: Tied for third in Region 12 with 3-5 record and won play-in game against Payson to clinch final playoff berth.

Playoff opener: at Juan Diego, Friday, 7 p.m.

Best preseason victory: A 51-34 win at Snow Canyon on Dec. 28.

Most important region victory: A 45-31 win vs. Richfield on Feb. 4.

#31 Jordan Scoggins, So. (6.0 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 3.5 apg, 2.4 spg)

#33 Jaylie Jensen, Jr. (4.2 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.9 spg)

#25 Lindsey Blanc, (3.3 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.6 spg)

Scoring offense: 43.2 ppg (12th in 3A)

Scoring defense: 40.6 ppg (4th in 3A)

Last state championship: 2005

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Juan Diego in first round

Edward’s evaluation: Late-season collapse was erased with play-in game victory over Payson on Tuesday. The Dinos open with Juan Diego, a team it lost to 60-50 back on Jan. 10. However, Carbon traditionally plays well in the state tournament and it features one of the top scoring defenses in 3A, which gives them hope at a potential first-round upset.

Cedar Redmen (12-10)

2013-14 schedule

Coach: John Elison

How qualified: Fourth in Region 9 with 6-6 record

Playoff opener: at Bear River, Friday, 7 p.m.

Best preseason victory: A 43-41 win vs. North Sanpete on Jan. 2.

Most important region victory: A 44-38 win at Canyon View on Jan. 28.

Scoring offense: 41.5 ppg (13th in 3A)

Scoring defense: 42.3 ppg (9th in 3A)

Last state championship: None

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Bear River in first round

Edward’s evaluation: Won final three games to clinch playoff berth. Sustaining that momentum will be difficult with a long trek to Bear River for the first round. If Cedar does escape with the first-round upset, the final three rounds of the tourney will be played at SUU, which gives coach John Elison’s team hope for a few more wins.

Desert Hills Thunder (21-1)

2013-14 schedule

Coach: Chris Allred

How qualified: First in Region 9 with 12-0 record.

Playoff opener: vs. Grantsville, Friday, 7 p.m.

Best preseason victory: A 50-28 win at Timpanogos on Dec. 21.

Most important region victory: An 83-50 win at Hurricane on Jan. 7.

Scoring offense: 65.3 ppg (2nd in 3A)

Scoring defense: 37.2 ppg (1st in 3A)

Last state championship: None

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Win over Morgan in championship

Edward’s evaluation: OK, this has gotta be the year Desert Hills gets the job done, right? After losing in the championship game two straight years, this year’s team has been virtually unstoppable against 5A, 4A and 3A teams with a 27-point average margin of victory. A tough test could await Desert Hills in the final against Morgan, but there’s simply too much talent on this team to come up short again.

Grantsville Cowgirls (5-16)

2013-14 schedule

Coach: Megan Vera

How qualified: Fourth in Region 11 with 2-6 record

Playoff opener: at Desert Hills, Friday, 7 p.m.

Best preseason victory: A 38-23 win vs. Rowland Hall on Dec. 17

Most important region victory: A 42-32 win vs. Ben Lomond on Feb. 4.

#14 Megan Cafarelli, So., Guard (3.2 ppg)

Scoring offense: 32.0 ppg (21st in 3A)

Scoring defense: 45.2 ppg (13th in 3A)

Last state championship: None

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Desert Hills in first round

Edward’s evaluation: With two freshman and two sophomore contributions, Grantsville’s inevitable blowout loss in the first round at Desert Hills will be good experience for the players to build on for next year.

Hurricane Tigers (13-8)

2013-14 schedule

Coach: Shelly Kidd-Thomas

How qualified: Second in Region 9 with 8-4 record

Playoff opener: vs. Tooele, Friday, 7 p.m.

Best preseason victory: A 53-52 win at Enterprise on Dec. 12.

Most important region victory: A 53-49 win at Snow Canyon on Feb. 4.

#0 London Steglich, Jr., Guard (6.7 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 1.7 apg, 1.5 spg)

#55 Sela Filo, Sr., Forward (6.7 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 1.0 apg, 1.0 spg)

#21 Shania Hurst, Sr., Guard (6.4 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 1.7 apg, 2.4 spg)

Scoring offense: 49.6 ppg (5th in 3A)

Scoring defense: 47.2 ppg (14th in 3A)

Last state championship: 2000

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to North Sanpete in quarterfinals

Edward’s evaluation: Any team that finishes second in Region 9 needs to be taken seriously, even if that league is down a bit this year. The Tigers should have no problem winning its opener against Tooele, but a very difficult quarterfinal game with North Sanpete awaits, a team it already lost to 54-43 back on Jan. 4.

Juab Wasps (10-10)

2013-14 schedule

Coach: Jeff Wallace

How qualified: Second in Region 12 with 4-4 record

Playoff opener: vs. Union, Friday, 7 p.m.

Best preseason victory: A 51-32 win at Park City on Dec. 17.

Most important region victory: A 54-44 win at Richfield on Feb. 11.

Top contributors

#25 Ally Nelson, Sr. (13.9 ppg)

#21 Hailey Wright, Sr. (5.3 ppg)

#14 Hannah Jacobsen, Jr. (3.2 ppg)

Scoring offense: 44.2 ppg (9th in 3A)

Scoring defense: 42.8 ppg (10th in 3A)

Last state championship: None

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Desert Hills in quarterfinals

Edward’s evaluation: A favorable first-round game against Union should help Juab book its place in the quarterfinals at SUU. Unfortunately for Juab, its opponent will be No. 1 Desert Hills.

Juan Diego Soaring Eagle (17-4)

2013-14 schedule

Coach: Natalie Williams

How qualified: Second in Region 10 with 6-2 record

Playoff opener: vs. Carbon, Friday, 7 p.m.

Best preseason victory: A 75-45 win at Snow Canyon on Dec. 12.

Most important region victory: A 70-40 win at Union on Feb. 11.

#10 Alexa Mortensen, Sr. (8.0 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 1.1 spg)

#1 Marlee Machon, So. (7.3 ppg, 1.2 rpg, 1.7 apg, 1.8 spg)

#22 Melanie Mecham, Sr. (3.7 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 2.2 apg, 2.0 spg)

Scoring offense: 62.0 ppg (3rd in 3A)

Scoring defense: 44.6 ppg (12th in 3A)

Last state championship: None

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Desert Hills in semifinals

Edward’s evaluation: If Juan Diego takes care of business in the first two rounds as it should, a date with Desert Hills awaits in the 3A semifinals at SUU. Success beyond that will be very difficult. Desert Hills beat Juan Diego 86-58 in a nonregion game back on Jan. 3, and it’s hard to imagine things have changed that much in seven weeks.

Morgan Trojans (20-1)

2013-14 schedule

Coach: Brad Matthews

How qualified: First in Region 10 with 8-0 record

Playoff opener: vs. Richfield, Friday, 6 p.m.

Best preseason victory: A 76-71 win vs. Sky View on Dec. 3.

Most important region victory: A 72-55 win at Juan Diego on Feb. 14.

#10 Lisa VanCampen, Sr., Forward (9.1 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 1.2 apg, 2.5 spg)

#21 Jessica Carter, Jr., Forward (9.0 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 2.5 apg, 2.5 spg)

#20 Savanna Brooks, Jr., Guard (7.7 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 2.9 apg, 2.3 spg)

Scoring offense: 74.1 ppg (1st in 3A)

Scoring defense: 42.2 ppg (8th in 3A)

Last state championship: 2004

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Desert Hills in championship

Edward’s evaluation: The highest-scoring team in 3A, Morgan is definitely the favorite to advance to the 3A championship game from the lower half of the bracket. North Sanpete could be a tricky matchup in the semis, but all signs point to a Desert Hills-Morgan showdown in the championship. When those same two teams met in the quarterfinals last year with much the same personnel, Desert Hills won 42-20. Morgan will definitely be a sizable underdog if such a title game materializes.

North Sanpete Hawks (17-3)

2013-14 schedule

Coach: Randi Griffith

How qualified: First in Region 12 with 7-1 record

Playoff opener: vs. Park City, Friday, 7 p.m.

Best preseason victory: A 60-48 win at Copper Hills on Dec. 6.

Most important region victory: A 47-32 win at Juab on Feb. 4.

Top contributors

#20 Taylor Gordon, Sr., Forward (19.0 ppg)

#11 Keisha Jorgensen, Sr., Guard (6.4 ppg)

#10 McKenna Birch, Jr., Forward (3.7 ppg)

Scoring offense: 48.0 ppg (6th in 3A)

Scoring defense: 38.4 ppg (2nd in 3A)

Last state championship: None

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Morgan in semifinals

Edward’s evaluation: North Sanpete hasn’t won a playoff game since advancing to the state championship game back in 2004. That streak should come to an emphatic end this year as the Region 12 champs have a clear semifinal path in front of them. Success beyond that would require some big upsets.

Park City Miners (5-13)

2013-14 schedule

Coach: Sam White

How qualified: Fourth in Region 10 with 2-6 record

Playoff opener: at North Sanpete, Friday, 7 p.m.

Best preseason victory: A 51-33 win vs. Park City on Dec. 4.

Most important region victory: A 41-38 win at Uintah on Feb. 14.

Top contributors

#1 Marina Mayo, So., Guard (5.7 ppg)

#24 Sabrina Prior, Sr., F/C (5.5 ppg)

#2 Jessica Perry, Fr., Guard (4.7 ppg)

Scoring offense: 40.7 ppg (14th in 3A)

Scoring defense: 53.3 ppg (21st in 3A)

Last state championship: None

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to North Sanpete in first round

Edward’s evaluation: Will likely be a brief playoff stay for Park City as it faces a very difficult matchup in the first round.

Richfield Wildcats (6-14)

2013-14 schedule

Coach: Marc Peterson

How qualified: Tied for third in Region 12 with 3-5 record, but claimed fourth seed in tiebreakers

Playoff opener: at Morgan, Friday, 7 p.m.

Best preseason victory: A 43-29 win vs. Delta on Dec. 10.

Most important region victory: A 49-38 win vs. Payson on Feb. 6.

Top contributors

#12 Madison Utley, Sr. (12.6 ppg)

#25 Aspen Shumway, Jr. (7.0 ppg)

#23 Kambry Jensen, Sr. (5.5 ppg)

#4 Shandi Bastian, Fr. (5.3 ppg)

#11 Talisha Hinck, Jr. (3.4 ppg)

Scoring offense: 39.0 ppg (16th in 3A)

Scoring defense: 41.7 ppg (7th in 3A)

Last state championship: 2013 (2A)

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Morgan in first round

Edward’s evaluation: State champs a year ago in 2A, Richfield has struggled to compete with the better teams in 3A this year. One of the lower-scoring teams in 3A, Richfield opens the playoffs against the highest-scoring team in Morgan, and an upset is doubtful.

Snow Canyon Warriors (11-9)

2013-14 schedule

Coach: Dan Roden

How qualified: Third in Region 9 with 7-5 record

Playoff opener: at Stansbury, Friday, 7 p.m.

Best preseason victory: A 48-40 win over American Fork at Desert Hills Tournament on Dec. 5.

Most important region victory: A 51-44 win vs. Cedar on Jan. 14.

Top contributors

#11 Ashlee Nyborg, Sr., Guard (9.5 ppg)

#4 Grace Walton, Sr., Forward (9.1 ppg)

#21 Madison Mooring, So., Guard (8.9 ppg)

#15 Natalie Coulam, So., Guard (4.2 ppg)

#5 Shaylee Reed, So., Forward (3.7 ppg)

Scoring offense: 47.5 ppg (7th in 3A)

Scoring defense: 49.4 ppg (16th in 3A)

Last state championship: 2012

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Morgan in quarterfinals

Edward’s evaluation: Snow Canyon has been consistently inconsistent this year. Its season results read like this: five-game winning streak, four-game losing streak, three-game winning streak, two-game losing streak, two-game winning streak, three-game losing streak, end season with 45-43 win over Dixie. If the trend continues, Snow Canyon should beat Stansbury in first round, but a win over Morgan in the quarterfinals seems unlikely.

Stansbury Stallions (14-8)

2013-14 schedule

Coach: Kenzie Newton

How qualified: Tied for first in Region 11 with 7-1 record, but lost coin flip to earn No. 2 seed

Playoff opener: vs. Snow Canyon, Friday, 7 p.m.

Best preseason victory: A 34-32 win at Cedar on Jan. 4.

Most important region victory: A 47-45 win vs. Bear River on Jan. 21.

Top contributors

#14 Bailey Wilson, Sr., Guard (9.1 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 1.6 apg, 1.4 spg)

#21 Madie Alvey, Sr., Guard (8.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 1.9 apg, 2.9 spg)

#13 Rachel Prescott, Jr., Guard (8.1 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 1.7 apg, 2.7 spg)

#12 Shyan Adams, Sr., Forward (7.2 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.5 spg)

#33 Kallie Stewart, Jr., Center (4.5 ppg, 4.3 rpg)

Scoring offense: 45.1 ppg (8th in 3A)

Scoring defense: 41.3 ppg (5th in 3A)

Last state championship: None

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Snow Canyon in first round

Edward’s evaluation: Did very well to tie for the Region 11 crown with Bear River, a sign Stansbury is a program on the rise. Stansbury’s first-round opponent is a Snow Canyon team that’s used to playoff success, and the Stallions have their work cut out for them to advance to SUU.

Tooele Buffaloes (6-16)

2013-14 schedule

Coach: Kris Ashby

How qualified: Third in Region 11 with 4-4 record

Playoff opener: at Hurricane, Friday, 7 p.m.

Best preseason victory: A 53-39 win vs. Carbon on Dec. 17.

Most important region victory: A 58-39 win at Grantsville on Feb. 6.

Top contributors

#24 Courtney Schiwal, Jr., Forward (10.8 ppg)

#25 Taylor Thomas, Jr., G/F (8.0 ppg)

#5 Baylee Hansen, Jr., Forward (6.1 ppg)

#3 Amber Haskell, Jr., Guard (3.5 ppg)

#32 Hannah Webber, Sr., F/C (2.8 ppg)

Scoring offense: 43.2 ppg (11th in 3A)

Scoring defense: 49.4 ppg (17th in 3A)

Last state championship: 1992

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Hurricane in first round

Edward’s evaluation: Will need to play its best game of the season to have any hope of pulling off the major first-round upset.

Union Cougars (6-13)

2013-14 schedule

Coach: Atlee Zipf

How qualified: Third in Region 10 with 3-5 record

Playoff opener: at Juab, Friday, 7 p.m.

Best preseason victory: A 40-25 win at Grantsville on Nov. 26.

Most important region victory: A 47-30 win at Park City on Jan. 31.

Top contributors

#00 Hallie Horrocks, Sr. (7.6 ppg)

#10 Alexis Anderson, Jr. (6.1 ppg)

#34 Emily Woolstenhulme, So. (4.7 ppg)

#30 Shayla Draper, So. (4.4 ppg)

#23 Chelsie Birchell, Jr. (4.3 ppg)

Scoring offense: 36.1 ppg (19th in 3A)

Scoring defense: 53.0 ppg (20th in 3A)

Last state championship: 1999

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Juab in first round

Edward’s evaluation: Will certainly be an underdog in the first round at Juab, but Juab is the weakest of the four No. 2 seeds in the 3A playoffs so if Union can get hot, anything is possible. At the same time, Union only averages 36.1 ppg, so a big scoring outburst seems unlikely.
