The Days of '47 Parade is one of the oldest parades in the U.S., and on Monday July 25, (Pioneer Day, July 24 falls on Sunday this year) people from all over the state, nation and world will gather in Salt Lake to celebrate the 1847 arrival of the pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley, as well as the modern pioneers of today. Parade enthusiasts got a sneak peak of some of this year's floats last week at the South Towne Expo Center. The Days of '47 parade has featured some amazing floats in its history, and in honor of the work that goes into their creation, here's a look back at more than a decade of these drivable works of art. >> See more: Family-friendly Pioneer Day celebrations planned across the state

Flying to Zion

Salt Lake Stake's float won the Theme Award in 2012, celebrating the idea of, "Pioneers, Building the Dream." The float featured a flying handcart attached to a blimp.

Prepping for a feast

Utah's egg basket

A flock of hang gliding eggs flew around the Draper temple while others biked and rode horses on the Draper Corner Canyon Stake's float in 2011. The float won the Legacy Award, highlighted the history of Draper and was titled, "From Egg Basket to Fantastic."

Bob Simons of the Draper Corner Canyon Stake estimated that 1,500 hours went into the float, including the work of the woman who sculpted the eggs' faces.

Ahoy, matey

The Pirates of the Caribbean-themed Wal-Mart float, which celebrated Primary Children's, won the President's Award for the Days of '47 Parade in 2008.

The Polynesian Culture Center float took home the Sweepstakes Award in 2012. The float celebrated the Pioneers of the Pacific and featured indigenously dressed Polynesians in a tropical setting with palm trees, while dancers surrounded the float. The float also won the President's Award.

Spread your wings

In 2003, this float by the Salt Lake Olympus Stake won the Sweepstakes Award and the People's Choice Award. The theme that year was "Pioneer Your Potential — Spread Your Wings and Fly."

"Our biggest fear was that if we had gusty winds, instead of driving the route we would fly through it because of the wings," Kelly Clark, the float chairman for the Olympus Stake, told the Deseret News at the time. "We said our driver may have to learn to land this thing."
