From John Ford Westerns to sci-fi thrillers, Utah has hosted a steady stream of filmmakers for more than 70 years. According the Utah Film Commission, more than 900 films have been shot in Utah. Some movies only show brief snippets of Utah's landscape, while others are shot entirely in the state.

Here is a list of just 50 films shot in Utah. Which one are you most surprised to see?

"Stagecoach" (1939)

"Stagecoach" launched many firsts: John Ford's first Monument Valley film and John Wayne's first starring role. The tale of a stagecoach threatened by Geronimo in the wild West earned Ford a Best Director Oscar.

"Billy the Kid" tells the story of one of the West's last outlaws and his quest for vengeance.

"She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" (1949)

"The Conqueror" (1956)

Despite being a film about Mogul emperor Genghis Khan (played by John Wayne), "The Conqueror" was almost exclusively filmed in Utah.

Shot downwind from a nuclear testing site, the film has become infamous due to the high rate of cancer cast and crew members experienced — 91 out of 210. John Wayne was just one of the cast to die from cancer.
