The 2013 NFL season is right around the corner with team training camps starting across the league, and there are many NFL players with Utah ties looking to make the final 52 man roster.


Some are grizzled veterans who hope to lead their team to the playoffs, some are looking to jump up the depth chart and possibly take a starting spot on the and some are battling just to make the final roster.


Here is a quick overview of the roster status of every NFL player with Utah ties heading in to training camp, beginning with 15 BYU Cougars, then 32 Utah Utes, followed by 12 Utah State Aggies. Two Weber State Wildcats comes next, concluding with five Utah High School players that played college ball out of state.

Ziggy Ansah

Position: Defensive End

College: BYU

Ansah was picked fifth overall by the Detroit Lions in the 2013 NFL draft. He looks to make an immediate impact on the already stout Detroit defensive line.

Ansah has already signed a five-year deal with the Lions and has made good impressions so far during the first few days of the Lion's minicamp.

“He looks athletic, obviously,” Lions coach Jim Schwartz told the Detroit Free Press. “We knew that. This is not the first practice we had with Ziggy Ansah. We had a whole week of practice and a whole game day (when we coached him) at the Senior Bowl, so it wasn’t our first look at him. We knew what to expect from him athletically. But just watching the guys go about it, you can tell that everything’s new to him but he picks things up quickly.”

Braden Brown

Position: Left Tackle

College: BYU

Brown went undrafted in 2013, but signed with the St. Louis Rams after the draft.

Brown is currently third on the depth chart, but looks to overtake Ty Nsekhe, who spent 2 seasons in the arena football league before signing with the Rams practice squad last season.

Jake Long, the Rams presumed starter played with the Miami Dolphins last season before signing a $36 million with the Rams.

John Beck

Position: Quarterback

College: BYU

Beck, who spent part of the 2012 season with the Houston Texans, is currently an unrestricted free agent.

Beck was released by the Texans in October of 2012.

According to NBC Sports, Beck was invited to the New Orleans Saints' rookie minicamp on a tryout basis.

Austin Collie

Position: Wide receiver

College: BYU

Collie spent his entire career with the Indianapolis Colts, but was released after the 2012 season and is currently a free agent.

Collie, whose career has been plague by multiple concussions, has yet to draw significant intrest from any NFL teams.

John Denney

Position: Long snapper

College: BYU

John Denney has spent his entire career with the Miami Dolphins after going undrafted in 2005.

Denney looks to maintain his top slot on the depth chart after being selected to the pro bowl in 2012.

Ray Feinga

Position: Offensive lineman

College: BYU

Feinga last played for the Miami Dolphins in 2012 but was released at the beginning of the season.

He is currently a free agent.

Romney Fuga

Position: Defensive Tackle

College: BYU

Fuga was undrafted in 2013, but signed a free agent contract with the Denver Broncos.

Fuga is third on the depth chart behing former Ute Sealver Siliga.

Brett Keisel

Position: Defensive end

College: Snow, BYU

Keisel has played for the Pittsburg Steelers since 2002.

Kiesel, who has started on two Super Bowl winning teams, is unlikely to have much competition going in to camp.

Preston Hadley

Position: Defensive back

College: BYU

Hadley was not drafted in the 2013 draft, but was invited to attend the Seahawks minicamp.

Hadley has not signed with the Seahawks but could be offered a contract pending his camp performance.

Braden Hansen

Position: Right Guard

College: BYU

Hansen was not drafted in the 2013 draft but signed with the Oakland Raiders.

Hansen has a good chance of making the roster as there are only two right guards on Oakland's depth chart.

Uona Kaveinga

Position: Linebacker

College: BYU

Kaveinga was not drafted in the 2013 NFL draft, but signed a free agent contract with the Denver Broncos.

Kaveinga is currently the fourth middle linebacker on the Broncos depth chart.

Brandon Ogletree

Position: Linebacker

College: BYU

Ogletree was not drafted in 2013, but signed a free agent contract with the Miami Dolphins.

The dolphins currently have 12 linebackers on their depth chart increasing the competition for roster spots.

Dennis Pitta

Position: Tight end

College: BYU

Pitta was drafted by the Ravens in 2010 and has spent his entire career with Baltimore.

Pitta recently signed a $2 million restricted free agent tender with the Ravens and it is unlikely that he will be challenged for his roster spot.

Dallas Reynolds

Position: Offensive guard

College: BYU

High school: Timpview High School

Reynolds has been part of the Philadelphia Eagles since 2009, but was signed to the active roster from the practice squad in 2012.

He is second on the Eagles depth chart behind center Jason Kelce.

Although he has seen more action since being promoted from the practice squad, he will probably not overtake Kelce for the starting spot.

Matt Reynolds

Position: Offensive guard

College: BYU

High school: Timpview High School

After going undrafted in 2012, he spent time with the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles.

He was cut by the Eagles in May but claimed off waivers by the Kansas City Chiefs.

He is currently third on the depth chart for left tackle, however he may have trouble cracking the active roster as the Chiefs used the number one overall pick on left tackle Eric Fisher.

Matt Asiata

Position: Running back

College: Snow, Utah

High school: Hunter High School

After going undrafted in 2011, he was eventually picked up by the Minnesota Vikings.

He was released from the practice squad, but eventually re signed and earned a roster spot.

Currently Asiata is third on the depth chart, but may not see much playing time behind Adrian Peterson, who rushed for over 2,000 yards last season.

Zane Beadles

Position: Offensive guard

College: Utah

High school: Hillcrest High School

Beadles was drafted in 2010 by the Denver Broncos.

Beadles is coming off a career season, where he was selected to the 2012 pro bowl.

He does not face much competition to maintain his starting spot on the Broncos.

Tony Bergstrom

Position: Offensive tackle

College: Utah

High school: Skyline High School

Although he played tackle during his college career, he was drafted as a guard by the Raiders in 2012.

He started for the Radiers his rookie season, and does not look to relinquish his spot on the depth chart.

Sam Brenner

Position: Center

College: Utah

Brenner was undrafted in 2013 but signed with the Miami Dolphins after the draft.

He is currently third on the Dolphin's depth chart but looks to overtake Josh Samuda, an undrafted signee from 2012, for the second spot.

Brandon Burton

Position: Corner back

College: Utah

Burton was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 2011.

Burton is currently 4th our of five on the depth chart. He may face competition for a roster spot, as the Vikings drafted cornerback Xavier Rhodes in the first round of the 2013 draft.

DaVonte Christopher

Position: Wide receiver

College: Utah

Christopher went undrafted but signed a free agent deal with the Washington Redskins.

Christopher will face stiff competition as there are currently 10 wide receivers on the Redskin's roster.

Reggie Dunn

Position: Return Specialist

College: Utah

Dunn went undrafted in 2013, but signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the offseason as a wide reciever.

Dunn is currently listed as sixth wide receiver on the Steelers depth chart.

Jordan Gross

Position: Offensive tackle

College: Utah

Gross has been a member of the Carolina Panthers since 2003.

A two time pro bowler, Gross looks likely to maintain his starting spot going into camp.

Robert Johnson

Position: Safety

College: Utah

Johnson has spent two seasons with the Tennessee Titans.

Johnson is second on the depth chart and looks to overtake Michael Griffin for the starting spot.

Maake Kemoeatu

Position: Defensive tackle

College: Utah

After taking a year off from football, Kemoeatu returned to the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens where he won the starting job.

He is currently a free agent after the Ravens opted not to re sign him.

Dave Kruger

Position: Defensive End

College: Utah

Kruger was not drafted in 2013, but signed a free agent contract with the Cleveland Browns.

Kruger is fourth on the depth chart and may face competition with seventh round draft pick Armonty Bryant.

Paul Kruger

Position: Linebacker

College: Utah

High school: Timpanogos High School

Kruger was drafted in 2009 by the Baltimore Ravens, and played with the team until after winning the Super Bowl in 2012 when he became a free agent.

He signed a free agent deal with the Cleveland Browns for 5-years and $40 million.

Kruger looks to take the starting job, however the Browns also signed Quentin Groves who played with Arizona.

Ryan Lacy

Position: Cornerback

College: Utah

Lacy was undrafted in 2013, but signed a free agent contract with the New Orleans Saints.

The Saints currently have nine cornerbacks on their roster, however the Saints defense was one of the worst in the league last season.

Star Lotulelei

Position: Defensive Tackle

College: Utah

Lotulelei was projected by many to be a top five pick, but after medical issues at the NFL combine he was drafted 14th by the Carolina Panthers.

"The things [the rookies are] doing are what we need from that position. I'm pretty excited about it. Star has been what we thought he was," coach Ron Rivera told Fox News.

Moe Lee

Position: Cornerback

College: Utah

Lee was not drafted in 2013, but signed a free agent contract with the Baltimore Ravens.

Lee is currently fourth on the depth chart and will have plenty of competition to make the roster at a position that is already deep.

Brice McCain

Position: Corner back

College: Utah

McCain was drafted in 2009 by the Houston Texans.

He currently backs up Johnathan Joseph, who is coming off a Pro Bowl season.

Koa Misi

Position: Linebacker

College: Utah

Misi was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 2010 and has been with the team for two seasons.

He is currently at the top of the depth chart and does not look to be seriously challenged going in to camp.

Sione Pouha

Position: Defensive tackle

College: Utah

High school: East High School

Pouha was selected in 2005 by the New York Jets and played with Jets until 2012.

He was released at the end of last seasons and is currently an unrestricted free agent.

David Reed

Position: Wide receiver

College: Utah

Reed was drafted in 2010 by the Baltimore Ravens.

Reed is currently second out of six on the depth chart behind Torrey Smith.

David Rolf

Position: Tight end

College: Utah

Rolf went undrafted in 2013, but signed a free agent contract with the San Diego Chargers.

Rolf is currently sixth on the Chargers depth chart and will have quite a battle to make the active roster. In addition to Rolf, the Chargers signed Ben Cotton and Dallas Walker, also undrafted free agents, to compete for a roster spot.

Caleb Schlauderaff

Position: Offensive guard

College: Utah

Schlauderaff was drafted by the Green Bay Packers but traded to the New York Jets in 2011.

Schlauderaff is currently the backup center behind Nick Mangold, who signed a seven year $55 million contract in 2010.

Sean Sellwood

Position: Punter

College: Utah

Sellwood went undrafted in 2013, but signed a free agent contract with the Atlanta Falcons.

Sellwood is looking to overtake current Falcon punter Matt Bosher, and may have a chance at taking the roster spot.

Last season, Bosher averaged punts of 42.7 yards while during that same span, Sellwood averaged punts of 46.5.

Derrick Shelby

Position: Defensive end

College: Utah

Shelby went undrafted in 2012 but was signed to the Miami Dolphins.

He saw hardly any playing time last season and is third on the Dolphins depth chart.

The Dolphins are not particularly deep at left defensive end, so while Shelby may not move up the depth chart, he should have little trouble maintaining a roster spot.

Sealver Siliga

Position: Defensive lineman

College: Utah

High school: Copper Hills High School

After going undrafted in 2011, Siliga was eventually signed to the Denver Broncos practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster in 2012.

He will face competition from BYU's Romney Fuga, an undrafted free agent whom the Broncos recently signed.

Alex Smith

Position: Quarterback

College: Utah

After falling out of favor in San Francisco after an injury, Smith was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Smith, who had one of the best completion percentages in the NFL last season looks to bring stability to the Chiefs quarterback position.

Smith will have help, as the Chiefs used their first three draft picks on players on offense.

Sean Smith

Position: Corner back

College: Utah

Smith was drafted in 2009 by the Miami Dolphins and in 2013 signed a three year $18 million with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Smith is atop the depth chart although he may face some competition from Sanders Commings, whom the Chiefs drafted in the fifth round of the 2013 draft.

Steve Smith

Position: Wide receiver

College: Utah

Smith has spent 12 seasons with the Carolina Panthers.

Smith is widely regarded as one of the best receivers in the game and started all 16 games for the Panthers in 2012 while notching his seventh thousand yard season.

Smith will most likely remain the starter in 2013, although the Panthers are looking to find his sucessor and have eight players on the depth chart at Smith's position going in to camp.

Paul Soliai

Position: Defensive tackle

College: Utah

Soliai was drafted in the 2007 draft by the Miami Dolphins.

Soliai went to the pro bowl in 2012, and recently signed a two year extension worth $18 million.

Soliai is first on the depth chart and is the presumed starter going in to camp.

RJ Stanford

Position: Corner back

College: Utah

Stanford spent two seasons with the Carolina Panthers before signing a deal with the Miami Dolphins in 2012.

Stanford is third on the depth chart behind Richard Marshall and draftee and Jamar Taylor.

Stanford may have a chance to move up the depth chart as Taylor has yet to officially sign with the team and Marshall missed 12 games last season with a back injury.

Tevita Stevens

Position: Center

College: Utah

Stevens was not drafted in 2013 but signed a free agent contract with the Washington Redskins.

Stevens is currently third on the depth chart will face some competition in camp from Kevin Matthews and Jacolby Ashworth who both signed with the Redskins in the off season.

Stevenson Sylvester

Position: Linebacker

College: Utah

Sylvester was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2010.

He is currently second on the depth chart. He backs up Lawrence Timmons, who signed a six year $50 million contract in 2011.

Reggie Topps

Position: Cornerback

College: Utah

Topps went undrafted in 2013, will attend camp with the Arizona Cardinals.

He is one of five players who will attend the Cardinals rookie mini camp on a tryout basis.

Eric Weddle

Position: Safety

College: Utah

Weddle was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 2007.

He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2011 and named All-Pro in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

He does not face an serious competition heading in to camp.

Jarrett Bush

Position: Corner back

College: Utah State

Bush has played his entire career with the Green Bay Packers.

After cornerback Charles Woodson suffered a broken collar bone during Super Bowl XLV, Bush came in tallying one interception, one hit on quarterback, one pass defended, and five total tackles of which four were solo.

Bush however, will go into camp third on the depth chart. He will face competition to make the final roster as the Packers drafted corner Micah Hyde and signed corner Loyce Means in the offseason.

Matt Austin

Position: Wide receiver

College: Utah State

Austin went undrafted, but was signed to a multi-year deal by the Seattle Seahawks after the draft.

Austin looks to have plenty of competition to make the roster as the Seahawks picked up Percy Harvin in the offseason and drafted Chris Harper, a wide receiver from Kansas State.

John Chick

Position: Defensive end

College: Utah State

Chick, who spent last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, is currently a free agent.

Chick started his career in the CFL and is reportedly considering a return if he is unable to sign with an NFL team.

Will Davis

Position: Cornerback

College: Utah State

Davis was drafted in the third round of the 2013 NFL draft by the Miami Dolphins.

Currently, Davis is second on the depth chart out of five, behind offseason signee Brent Grimes who missed the entire 2012 season with an Achilles tear.

Chuck Jacobs

Position: Wide receiver

College: Utah State

Jacobs was undrafted in 2013, but signed a free agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers.

He is currently sixth on the 49ers depth chart and may have trouble cracking the 49ers already deep roster.

Al Lapuaho

Position: Defensive tackle

College: Utah State

Lapuaho was not drafted in 2013 but signed a free agent contract with the St. Louis Rams.

He is currently third on the Ram's depth chart.

Curtis Marsh

Position: Corner back

College: Utah State

Marsh has played with the Philadelphia Eagles since 2011.

He is currently third on the depth chart however, he could face some competition as the Eagles drafted cornerback Jordan Poyer in the seventh round of the 2013 draft.

Donald Penn

Position: Offensive tackle

College: Utah State

Penn has been with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers since 2006 after going undrafted.

Penn is currently at the top of the depth chart and does not look to be seriously challenged for his starting position.

Michael Smith

Position: Running back

College: Utah State

Smith was drafted in the seventh round of the 2012 draft and signed a four year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He is currently fourth on the depth chart and may face competition from Michael James, whom the Buccaneers drafted in the sixth round of the 2013 draft and placed third ahead of Smith on the depth chart.

Robert Turbin

Position: Running back

College: Utah State

Turbin was drafted in 2012 by the Seattle Seahawks.

As primary back up for Marshwn Lynch, he had 81 carries for 454 yards his rookie season.

He looks to maintain his back up spot in 2013, however, the Seahawks drafted running backs Christine Michael and Spencer Ware in the 2013 draft.

Bobby Wagner

Position: Linebacker

College: Utah State

Wagner was drafted in 2012 by the Seattle Seahawks.

Wagner had a break out rookie season where he was ranked as the #1 rookie inside linebacker, and second in the position in the entire league, by ProFootballFocus.

Wagner looks to solidify his position as a starter going in to camp.

Kerwynn Williams

Position: Running Back

College: Utah State

Williams was drafted in the seventh round of the 2013 NFL draft by the Indianapolis Colts.

Williams is fourth on the depth chart although he will face competition for a roster spot as the Colts have six running backs on their roster going in to camp.

Pat McQuistan

Position: Offensive lineman

College: Weber State

McQuistan spent the 2012 season with the Arizona Cardinals.

He is currently a free agent and is not scheduled to attend camp with any NFL teams.

Paul McQuistan

Position: Offensive guard

College: Weber State

McQuistan was drafted in 2006 by the Oakland Raiders and has spent the past two seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.

He is currently at the top of the depth chart and does not look to be seriously challenged for his starting position.

Stewart Bradley

Position: Left back

College: Nebraska

High school: Highland High School

Bradley played for the Arizona Cardinals last season, but was cut in March due to salary cap considerations.

He was signed by the Denver Broncos and is currently second on the depth chart behind Vonn Miller.

Stanley Havili

Position: Running back

College: USC

High school: Cottonwood High School

After playing two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, Havili was traded to the Indianapolis Colts.

Havili is listed as the top fullback on the Colts' depth chart ahead of rookie Dan Moore.

Haloti Ngata

Position: Defensive tackle

College: Oregon

High school: Highland High School

Ngata was drafted in 2006 by the Baltimore Ravens. He has been selected to five all-pro teams and four pro bowls, and was part of the Ravens Super Bowl winning team in 2013.

Ngata has been a mainstay on the Ravens defense and will not be seriously challenged for his starting spot.

Stephen Paea

Position: Defensive tackle

College: Snow, Oregon State

High school: Timpview High School

Paea was drafted in 2011 by the Chicago Bears.

Paea is currently a the top of the depth chart and does not look to be seriously challenged for his starting spot.

Will Tukuafu

Position: Offensive tackle

College: Oregon

High school: East High School

Tukuafu ahs spent the past two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers after going undrafted in 2010.

He is currently second on the depth chart but may face competition from Alex Debniak and Jason Schepler, two undrafted free agents that the 49ers signed after the draft.
