The first round of the 2A state tournament gets underway Friday at Orem High School, with the eight winners advancing to the quarterfinals at the Southern Utah University in Cedar City next Thursday. Defending state champion South Sevier heads into the playoffs on a 15-game winning streak and is on a collision course with No. 1 Wasatch Academy in the semifinals.

Reigning 2A MVP Race Parsons has scored 1,996 career points, and is just a few points away from becoming the sixth player in state history to sure pass 2,000 career points.

In order of winning percentage, these are the 16 teams that qualified for the 2A boys state basketball tournament this year:

1. Wasatch Academy (21-1)

2. South Sevier (18-3)

3. Beaver (15-3)

4. South Summit (14-7)

5. Gunnison (14-7)

6. Emery (13-7)

7. Manti (13-8)

8. Enterprise (13-9)

9. Richfield (11-8)

10. Merit Academy (11-8)

11. Parowan (11-10)

12. Summit Academy (11-10)

13. San Juan (11-10)

14. Kanab (9-10)

15. North Summit (8-12)

16. Waterford (6-14)

Here’s a team-by-team look at all 16 teams in the state tournament, and what to expect.

#21 Alani Pututau, Sr., Forward (5.9 ppg, 3.8 rpg)

#12 Trevor Jones, So., Guard (5.0 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.4 spg)

Scoring offense: 67.7 ppg (1st in 2A)

Scoring defense: 54.1 ppg (12th in 2A)

Last state championship: 2012

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: win over South Summit in state championship

Edward’s evaluation: Many believe that Wasatch Academy is a shoe-in to win the 2A state title, but you can bet South Sevier will have something to say about that. The Rams have won two straight state championships and to bet against SUU-bound Race Parsons, who has scored 1,996 career points heading into the state tournament, is a mistake.

Beaver Beavers (15-3)

2012-2013 Schedule

Coach: Joe Hillock (2nd year)

How qualified: Tied Parowan for second in Region 13 with 5-3 record, but lost a coin flip and enters playoff as No. 3 seed

Playoff opener: vs. Summit Academy, Saturday, 3:30 p.m. (At Orem High School)

Best preseason victory: A 55-47 win against Emery on Dec. 18

Most important region victory: A 47-39 win against Enterprise on Feb. 1

Scoring offense: 48.2 ppg (19th in 2A)

Scoring defense: 43.2 ppg (2nd in 2A)

Last state championship: 2002

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Wasatch Academy in quarterfinals

Edward’s evaluation: With 15 wins, Beaver isn’t your typical No. 3 seed. Coach Joe Hillocks’s team is playing well late in the year as well. After losing to Parowan, Enterprise and Millard in the first half of Region 13, Beaver avenged every one of those losses in the second half of league play. That bodes well heading into a tough first-round game with Summit Academy.

Emery Spartans (13-7)

2012-2013 Schedule

Coach: Todd Jeffs (25th year)

How qualified: Second in Region 15 with 5-3 record

Playoff opener: vs. Manti, Saturday, 9 a.m. (At Orem High School)

#13 Spencer Labrum, Sr., Forward (5.9 ppg, 6.4 rpg)

Scoring offense: 64.3 ppg (4th in 2A)

Scoring defense: 55.5 ppg (14th in 2A)

Last state championship: 1990 (3A)

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Manti in first round

Edward’s evaluation: Emery is one of six teams on the top half of the bracket that has a realistic shot at advancing to the 2A championship game next Saturday with both South Sevier and Wasatch Academy in the bottom bracket. Emery could just as easily bow out in the first round against a strong Manti team.

Enterprise Wolves (13-9)

2012-2013 Schedule

Coach: Larry Shurtliff

How qualified: First in Region 13 with 6-2 record

Playoff opener: vs. Waterford/Rowland Hall, Saturday, 10:30 a.m. (At Orem High School)

Best preseason victory: A 65-59 win against Panguitch on Nov. 28

#34 Taylor Whitman, Sr., Forward (4.5 ppg, 1.8 rpg)

#4 Logan Platt, Sr., Forward (3.7 ppg, 4.8 rpg)

Scoring offense: 56.9 ppg (7th in 2A)

Scoring defense: 55.5 ppg (14th in 2A)

Last state championship: 1988 (1A)

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Manti in quarterfinals

Edward’s evaluation: After starting the year with a 2-7 record, the Wolves finished strong to claim the Region 13 championship. Is that turnaround the result of improved play, or because the schedule got much easier once Region 13 play rolled around? That answer likely won’t come until the quarterfinals next week when they face a strong team in the 2A quarterfinals.

Gunnison Bulldogs (14-7)

2012-2013 Schedule

Coach: Ben Hill (2nd year)

How qualified: Tied Manti for second in Region 16 with 6-4 record, but swept Manti to earn No. 2 seed

Playoff opener: vs. Richfield, Saturday, 1:30 p.m. (At Orem High School)

Best preseason victory: A 53-41 win at Richfield on Dec. 29

Most important region victory: A 58-55 win at Manti on Feb. 6

Scoring offense: 55.5 ppg (11th in 2A)

Scoring defense: 50.8 ppg (4th in 2A)

Last state championship: 1999

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to South Summit in quarterfinals

Edward’s evaluation: Gunnison is a tough team to get a read on. One week it’s losing to North Sevier and Merit Academy, and the next it proves it can hang with No. 1 Wasatch Academy. If the consistent Gunnison team show up, it could easily make a run at the 2A title game. First it must get past Richfield in the first round, a team it beat 53-41 in an earlier meeting this year.

Kanab Cowboys (9-10)

2012-2013 Schedule

Coach: Harold Hamblin

How qualified: Tied Millard for fourth in Region 13 with 2-6 record, but beat Millard in play-in game to claim No. 4 seed.

Playoff opener: vs. South Summit, Saturday, noon (At Orem High School)

Best preseason victory: An 82-67 win against Emery on Dec. 6.

Most important region victory: A 69-61 win against Millard on Feb. 1.

#24 Chase Adams, So. (3.6 ppg)

Scoring offense: 53.1 ppg (14th in 2A)

Scoring defense: 51.7 ppg (7th in 2A)

Last state championship: 1975

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to South Summit in first round

Edward’s evaluation: Eked into the playoffs with two victories over Millard in final two weeks of the season, including a play-in game victory in Cedar City on Wednesday. The Cowboys are an underdog against South Summit in the first round, but they play good enough defense to keep it close

Manti Templars (13-8)

2012-2013 Schedule

Coach: Kyle Crouch (3rd year)

How qualified: Tied Gunnison for second in Region 16 with 6-4 record, but lost season series to Gunnison and enters playoffs as No. 3 seed

Playoff opener: vs. Emery, Saturday, 9 a.m. (At Orem High School)

Best preseason victory: A 58-50 win against Payson on Dec. 22 in St. George

Most important region victory: A 48-47 win against Merit on Jan. 23

Top contributors

#25 Jamen Miller, Sr., Guard (15.9 ppg)

#10 Joe Hugentobler, Sr., Forward (5.1 ppg)

Scoring offense: 56.5 ppg (8th in 2A)

Scoring defense: 51.4 ppg (6th in 2A)

Last state championship: 2008

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to South Summit in semifinals

Edward’s evaluation: Manti marched into the 2A semifinals a year ago, and this year’s team is capable of a similar run if it can escape a first-round game with Emery in arguably the best game of the day. Several of Manti’s key contributors were on the state championship football team last fall, experience they’ll hope to draw upon to extend the season beyond this weekend.

Merit Academy Knights (11-8)

2012-2013 Schedule

Coach: Joel Martinez (2nd year)

How qualified: Tied North Sevier for fourth in Region 16 with 3-7 record, and won season series with North Sevier to earn No. 4 seed

Playoff opener: vs. South Sevier, Saturday, 6:30 p.m. (At Orem High School)

Best preseason victory: A 64-61 win against Summit Academy on Dec. 21

Most important region victory: A 60-59 win at North Sevier on Feb. 1

Top contributors

#12 Joel Martinez, Jr. (17.1 ppg)

#15 Jacob Garcia, So. (3.6 ppg)

Scoring offense: 55.5 ppg (10th in 2A)

Scoring defense: 53.3 ppg (10th in 2A)

Last state championship: None

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to South Sevier in first round

Edward’s evaluation: Merit Academy’s reward for securing its first playoff berth in school history is a date with No. 2 South Sevier. Without a senior starter, it will be great experience for the Knights to build on for next year.

North Summit Braves (8-12)

2012-2013 Schedule

Coach: Marques Johnson (1st year)

How qualified: Third in Region 14 with 6-4 record

Playoff opener: vs. Parowan, Saturday, 8 p.m. (At Orem High School)

Best preseason victory: A 44-38 win against Richfield on Nov. 30 at Sevier Valley Center

Most important region victory: A 56-52 (OT) win at Rowland Hall on Jan. 16

#11 Ben Stephens, Sr., Forward (12.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.5 spg)

#33 Landon Richins, Sr., Forward (8.3 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 1.2 spg)

#15 Nick Rees, Jr., Guard (5.9 ppg, 1.2 rpg, 1.0 apg)

#2 Josh Birk, Jr., Guard (5.3 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 3.1 apg, 1.1 spg)

Scoring offense: 55.9 ppg (9th in 2A)

Scoring defense: 61.7 ppg (21st in 2A)

Last state championship: 2007

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to South Sevier in quarterfinals

Edward’s evaluation: It took North Summit a while to adjust to new coach Marques Johnson, but after a 2-8 preseason it followed it up with a respectable 6-4 record in region play. The Braves match-up well with first-round foe Parowan, but South Sevier looms in the next round, a team it lost to by 42 points back on Dec. 1.

Parowan Rams (11-10)

2012-2013 Schedule

Coach: Lance Stubbs (1st year)

How qualified: Tied Beaver for second in Region 13 with 5-3 record, and won a coin flip to claim the No. 2 seed

Playoff opener: vs. North Summit, Saturday, 8 p.m. (At Orem High School)

Best preseason victory: A 48-37 win against Union on Dec. 28 at Steve Hodson Cancer Classic

Most important region victory: A 33-30 win at Beaver on Jan. 9

Top contributors

#4 Justin Hulet, Sr., Guard (16.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 1.7 apg, 1.3 spg)

#22 Caleb Murphy, Jr., Center (12.3 ppg, 6.9 rpg)

#3 Jake Topham, Jr., G/F (6.7 ppg, 2.3 rpg)

#12 Austin Pickett, Sr., Forward (5.7 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 1.6 spg)

#23 Tristan Adams, Jr., Guard (3.1 ppg, 1.0 rpg)

Scoring offense: 50.4 ppg (18th in 2A)

Scoring defense: 46.9 ppg (3rd in 2A)

Last state championship: 2004

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to North Summit in first round.

Edward’s evaluation: Parowan has leaned on Justin Hulet and Caleb Topham all year, and they’ll need to be at their best if the Rams expect to escape with a first-round win over North Summit.

Richfield Wildcats (11-8)

2012-2013 Schedule

Coach: Rand Janes (7th year)

How qualified: Third in Region 15 with 4-4 record

Playoff opener: vs. Gunnison, Saturday, 1:30 p.m. (At Orem High School)

Best preseason victory: A 54-53 win against Canyon View on Nov. 28

Most important region victory: A 61-59 win against Emery on Feb. 1

#40 Jaylon Steck, Fr., Guard (9.0 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.1 spg)

#2 Josh Henry, Sr., G/F (7.3 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.0 spg)

#00 Burton Griffin, Jr., Forward (5.3 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 1.3 apg)

Scoring offense: 54.4 ppg (12th in 2A)

Scoring defense: 52.3 ppg (8th in 2A)

Last state championship: 1988

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Gunnison in first round.

Edward’s evaluation: Incredibly, Richfield has alternated wins and losses since Dec. 11. For the superstitious, that bodes well in the opening round against Gunnison as Richfield ended the season with a 22-point loss to South Sevier. The Wildcats will need more than good fortune to beat a Gunnison team they lost to 53-41 down at Kanab on Dec. 29

San Juan Broncos (11-10)

2012-2013 Schedule

Coach: Jason Torgerson (2nd year)

How qualified: Fourth in Region 15 with 3-5 record.

Playoff opener: vs. Wasatch Academy, Saturday, 5 p.m. (At Orem High School)

Best preseason victory: A 60-57 win against Gunnison on Dec. 1.

Most important region victory: A 62-50 win against Richfield on Jan. 26.

Top contributors

#2 Barkley Christensen, Sr. (16.4 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.0 spg)

#1 Logan Meyer, Sr. (15.0 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 3.7 apg, 2.9 spg)

#12 Isaac Morley, Sr. (6.9 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.3 spg)

#23 Ammon Mitchell, Sr. (4.8 ppg, 3.0 rpg)

#13 Cole Einerson, Sr. (4.7 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 1.2 apg)

Scoring offense: 58.8 ppg (6th in 2A)

Scoring defense: 58.5 ppg (17th in 2A)

Last state championship: 1992

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Wasatch Academy in first round

Edward’s evaluation: It’s always nice to make the playoffs, but baring a major letdown by No. 1 Wasatch Academy, San Juan’s stay in the state tournament will be brief.

South Summit Wildcats (14-7)

2012-2013 Schedule

Coach: Dusty Hatch (2nd year)

How qualified: Tied Summit Academy for first in Region 14 with 9-1 record, and won coin flip to earn No. 1 seed.

Playoff opener: vs. Kanab/Millard, Saturday, Noon (At Orem High School)

Best preseason victory: A 63-59 win at Gunnison on Dec. 14.

Most important region victory: A 64-57 win at Summit Academy on Jan. 25.

#1 Porter Larsen, Sr. (6.0 ppg)

Scoring offense: 60.2 ppg (5th in 2A)

Scoring defense: 50.9 ppg (5th in 2A)

Last state championship: 2010

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to South Sevier in state championship

Edward’s evaluation: There was a stretch earlier this season when coach Dusty Hatch admitted he had no idea what to expect from his team on a given night. Since dropping its region opener to Summit Academy though, the Wildcats have started to figure things out and nobody would be surprised if they marched through the upper bracket into the state title game.

Summit Academy Bears (11-10)

2012-2013 Schedule

Coach: Evric Gray (1st year)

How qualified: Tied Summit Academy for first in Region 14 with 9-1 record, and lost coin flip to earn No. 2 seed.

Playoff opener: vs. Beaver, Saturday, 3:30 p.m. (At Orem High School)

Best preseason victory: A 60-51 win against Richfield on Dec. 1 at Sevier Valley Center.

Most important region victory: A 61-58 win at South Summit on Jan. 9.

Top contributors

#10 Rashaan Griffin, Jr., Guard (15.8 ppg)

#12 Ashton Richards, Sr., Guard (9.5 ppg)

#15 Chris Apple, Sr., Forward (8.1 ppg)

#11 Bryson Young, Sr., Guard (7.9 ppg)

#25 Tyler Farris, So., Guard (7.9 ppg)

Scoring offense: 65.7 ppg (3rd in 2A)

Scoring defense: 65.0 ppg (22nd in 2A)

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Beaver in first round

Edward’s evaluation: Played a tough preseason schedule, and took it on the chin a lot of nights as a result. That experience seemed to pay off in region play as the Bears finished in a first-place tie with South Summit, but first-round foe Beaver presents a very tough challenge for the first-year varsity school.

Wasatch Academy Tigers (21-1)

2012-2013 Schedule

Coach: Geno Morgan (4th year)

How qualified: First in Region 16 with 10-0 record.

Playoff opener: vs. San Juan, Saturday, 5 p.m. (At Orem High School)

Best preseason victory: A 70-59 win against Weber on Dec. 21 at Provo High School.

Most important region victory: A 51-42 win at Gunnison on Jan. 30.

#41 Insa Kaba, Sr., Center (8.1 ppg, 5.5 rpg)

#23 Garrett Crosby, Sr., Guard (6.6 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.0 apg, 2.0 spg)

Scoring offense: 66.6 ppg (2nd in 2A)

Scoring defense: 42.4 ppg (1st in 2A)

Last state championship: 2011 (1A)

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to South Sevier in semifinals

Edward’s evaluation: No doubt the most talented team in 2A, many believe Wasatch Academy is the clear favorite to dethrone two-time state champ South Sevier this year. The Tigers steamrolled every 2A team it faced this year, in addition to beating Weber at the Provo Tip-Off Classic back in December.

Waterford Ravens (6-14)

2012-2013 Schedule

Coach: Ryan Judd (1st year)

How qualified: Tied Waterford for fourth in Region 14 with a 3-7 record, but won play-in game to claim No. 4 seed.

Playoff opener: vs. Enterprise, Saturday, 10:30 a.m. (At Orem High School)

Best preseason victory: A 47-38 win against Legacy on Nov. 30

Most important region victory: A 66-60 win against Rowland Hall on Feb. 8.

#30 Grant Smaellie, Sr., F/C (3.2 ppg)

Scoring offense: 47.4 ppg (21st in 2A)

Scoring defense: 58.7 ppg (18th in 2A)

Last state championship: None

Prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Enterprise in first round.

Edward’s evaluation: Beat Rowland Hall twice in six days — including Wednesday’s play-in victory — to punch its ticket to the state tournament. It will likely be a short stay as Waterford is the lowest-scoring 2A team in the playoffs, and it typically gives up a bunch of points as well.
