BYU center Paul Ruffner scored 35 points and pulled down 17 rebounds for the Cougars, but it wasn’t quite enough to overcome Mike Newlin’s 27 points and the Utes, who won 82-76 in the first year of the Special Events Center.

In the highest scoring BYU-Utah duel, a 113-105 double-overtime Cougar victory, BYU’s Devin Durrant scored 34 points on 13 of 24 from the field and 8 of 9 from the foul line. However, Durrant, who averaged 27.9 for the season, was almost overshadowed by teammate Brett Applegate, who scored 32 points and had 15 rebounds.

Josh Grant had 18 points and 22 rebounds, but Phil Dixon was the star of Utah’s 89-83 home win over the Cougars. Dixon scored 28 points on 9 of 10 from the field a school-record 5 of 5 from 3-point range. “That’s probably the best combination of offense and defense I’ve seen from a player in one game,” said Utah coach Rick Majerus.

Andrew Bogut, who later was named the NCAA Player of the Year, scored 26 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and had three steals as Utah overcame a slow start for a 69-60 victory that clinched a Mountain West Conference title for the Utes at home.

Three weeks before winning MVP honors in the NCAA Final Four, Utah’s Jerry Chambers blistered the nets for a career-high 48 points on 18-of-33 shooting in Provo. Alas, the future NIT champion Cougars took a 115-100 victory in Provo behind Jeff Congdon’s 33 points.

In a scoring battle with Utah’s all-American Jerry Chambers, who scored 35, BYU guard Dick Nemelka scored 34 points, including a keyhole jumper with 11 seconds to give the Cougars a 94-93 comeback victory in Salt Lake.

Danny Ainge scored 35 points in the last home game of his BYU career, shooting 14 of 25 from the field and 7 of 7 from the free throw line as the Cougars won 95-76 over the Danny Vranes/Tom Chambers-led Utes in front of a record 23,106 Marriott Center fans.

Keith Van Horn scored a career-high 38 points, making 25 of his 28 shots -- 9 of 12 from the field, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range and 16 of 16 from the free throw line and had 11 rebounds to boot in a 96-85 WAC title-clinching victory in Provo.

Jimmer Fredette will always be remembered for that half-court shot just before halftime in a game he scored 47 points on 16-of-28 shooting, including 6 of 9 from 3-point range in BYU’s 104-79 victory. Fredette scored 32 points in first half alone and also finished with six assists and four rebounds for the game.

Billy McGill scored 60 in Utah’s 106-101 win over the Cougars in Provo on 27 of 38 shooting from the field and 6 of 8 from the free throw line. It was the most points ever scored by one player in a college basketball game in the history of Utah until Utah Valley’s Ryan Toolson broke the record 47 years later.
