OREM — Utah Valley University Director of Athletics Vince Otoupal announced the promotion of Cameron Walker from director of compliance and student services to assistant athletic director for compliance and academic performance. In this role, Walker will aid in the development and direction of compliance for all athletics program and implement plans and processes to ensure compliance to university and NCAA standards. He will join Mark Tschaggeny in this administrative role and will report to Associate Athletic Director and Senior Women's Administrator Megan Kennedy.
"Cameron is a great asset to the UVU athletic department and he will continue to play a critical role in our success as he steps into this new leadership position," Kennedy said. "He has earned the respect of the department and is known as a go-to guy."
Walker has been at UVU for nearly four years, first arriving as a compliance intern in June 2010. He was promoted to his most recent position, director of compliance and student services, less than a year later. As director of compliance, Walker oversaw initial and continuing eligibility for student-athletes, investigated alleged compliance violations, coordinated official and unofficial recruiting visits, and supervised the student-services division of UVU athletics, including academic advisors and tutors.
In his new role, Walker will continue to emphasize academics as an overseer of Academic Progress Rates and Improvement Plans for all sports. These kinds of recovery plans are aimed to ensure the continued eligibility of student-athletes by identifying at-risk student-athletes and providing for them the necessary resources and tools to succeed academically. Walker is also charged with developing student services programs and supervising directly the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
"I am very grateful to Megan Kennedy and Vince Otoupal for this opportunity to serve as the assistant AD for compliance and academic performance. I am especially grateful to my wife Heather and for the support of her and my family that makes it possible for me to fulfill my responsibilities at UVU," Walker said. "It is an exciting time to be a part of Wolverine athletics. The future is bright for us and I am thrilled to be a part of moving us to the next echelon. The WAC will bring new experiences and possibilities for our student-athletes and fans. It is my goal to make sure we are in a position in regards to compliance and academics, especially APR, to enjoy those experiences and reap the benefits that we earn through competition, the classroom and in the community. Coach Schlegelmilch, my college baseball coach, always taught me to never be satisfied with mediocrity. That is something that is embraced here at UVU. We strive for excellence in all that we do and that makes it an exciting place to come to work every day. I hope to be an asset to UVU athletics in moving us forward into the bright future that awaits the Wolverines."
Walker is a member of the National Association for Athletics Compliance and also serves on its Communications Committee.
Before entering athletics administration, Walker played four years of collegiate baseball — a single season at Ricks College and the subsequent three at Southern Virginia University. A native of Rexburg, Idaho, he graduated cum laude from SVU in 2007 with a bachelor's degree in business management and leadership. Walker spent another year at SVU as an assistant baseball coach before shifting to law school at the University of Arkansas. He left Fayetteville in 2010 with a juris doctorate, graduating cum laude .
His wife of nine years, Walker is married to Heather Lyn Daun of Heber City, Utah. The couple have two children, Aleksandra and Hudson, and have a third on the way.
