LINDON — Police are getting help for a family after they say a mother left her disabled children alone for hours while she allegedly committed crimes.
Regina Schneiter, 39, is accused of leaving her 5-month-old baby with Down syndrome in the care of her 11-year-old autistic son for about eight hours on Jan. 6.
Lindon Police Chief Cody Cullimore says Schneiter then went to a Walmart and Target in the area and stole thousands of dollars worth of items.
"Upon being arrested for those thefts we learned that the children had been left alone," Cullimore said.
He says they learned a similar thing happened in the American Fork-Lehi area in December.
Schneiter was booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of retail theft and child neglect.
"It just appears that for some strange reason, she's decided she needs to commit these crimes," Cullimore said.
The children are now with their father. Cullimore said his officers and DCFS are working with the family.
"It appears this is a family we need to intervene in with everything we can," he said.
